We present results from a 54.7 live-day shielded run of the DRIFT-IId detector, the world's most sensitive, directional, dark matter detector. Several improvements were made relative to our previous ...work including a lower threshold for detection, a more robust analysis and a tenfold improvement in our gamma rejection factor. After analysis, no events remain in our fiducial region leading to an exclusion curve for spin-dependent WIMP-proton interactions which reaches 0.28pb at 100GeV/c2, a fourfold improvement on our previous work. We also present results from a 45.4 live-day unshielded run of the DRIFT-IId detector during which 14 nuclear recoil-like events were observed. We demonstrate that the observed nuclear recoil rate of 0.31 ± 0.08 events per day is consistent with detection of ambient, fast neutrons emanating from the walls of the Boulby Underground Science Facility.
Light dark matter in the context of dark sector theories is an attractive candidate to make up the bulk of the mass of our Universe. We explore here the possibility of using a low-pressure, ...negative-ion, time-projection-chamber detector to search for light dark matter behind the beam dump of an electron accelerator. The sensitivity of a 10-m long detector is several orders of magnitude better than existing limits. This sensitivity includes regions of parameter space where light dark matter is predicted to have a required relic density consistent with measured dark matter density. Backgrounds at shallow depth will need to be considered carefully. However, several signatures exist, including a powerful directional signature, which will allow a detection even in the presence of backgrounds.
Chromosome testing strategies, such as preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), improve initial IVF outcomes by avoiding unwitting transfer of aneuploid embryos in morphology-based ...selection practices. Newer technologies have revealed that some embryos may appear to have intermediate whole chromosome (or parts of a chromosome termed segmental) copy number results suggesting trophectoderm mosaicism. An embryo with a trophectoderm mosaic-range result may be the only option for transfer for some patients. Recent data suggest that such mosaic embryos can be transferred without added risk of abnormal birth outcomes but may be associated with increased implantation failure and miscarriage rates, with higher values of mosaicism appearing to be less favourable for producing good outcomes. In this Position Statement, we provide guidance to laboratories, clinics, clinicians and counsellors to assist in discussions on the utility and transfer of mosaic embryos.

We demonstrate a new type of analysis for the DRIFT-IId
directional dark matter detector using a machine learning algorithm
called a Random Forest Classifier. The analysis labels events as
...signal or background based on a series of selection parameters,
rather than solely applying hard cuts. The analysis efficiency is
shown to be comparable to our previous result at high energy but
with increased efficiency at lower energies. This leads to a
projected sensitivity enhancement of one order of magnitude below a
WIMP mass of 15 GeV c
-2
and a projected sensitivity limit that
reaches down to a WIMP mass of 9 GeV c
-2
, which is a first for
a directionally sensitive dark matter detector.
The addition of O2 to gas mixtures in time projection chambers containing CS2 has recently been shown to produce multiple negative ions that travel at slightly different velocities. This allows a ...measurement of the absolute position of ionising events in the z (drift) direction. In this work, we apply the z-fiducialisation technique to a directional dark matter search. We present results from a 46.3 live-day source-free exposure of the DRIFT-IId detector run in this new mode. With full-volume fiducialisation, we have achieved the first background-free operation of a directional detector. The resulting exclusion curve for spin-dependent WIMP-proton interactions reaches 1.1 pb at 100 GeV/c2, a factor of 2 better than our previous work. We describe the automated analysis used here, and argue that detector upgrades, implemented after the acquisition of these data, will bring an additional factor of ≳3 improvement in the near future.
Radon gas emanating from materials is of interest in environmental science and also a major concern in rare event non-accelerator particle physics experiments such as dark matter and double beta ...decay searches, where it is a major source of background. Notable for dark matter experiments is the production of radon progeny recoils (RPRs), the low energy (~ 100 keV) recoils of radon daughter isotopes, which can mimic the signal expected from WIMP interactions. Presented here are results of measurements of radon emanation from detector materials in the 1 m super(3) DRIFT-II directional dark matter gas time projection chamber experiment. Construction and operation of a radon emanation facility for this work is described, along with an analysis to continuously monitor DRIFT data for the presence of internal super(222) Rn and super(218) Po. Applying this analysis to historical DRIFT data, we show how systematic substitution of detector materials for alternatives, selected by this device for low radon emanation, has resulted in a factor of ~ 10 reduction in internal radon rates. Levels are found to be consistent with the sum from separate radon emanation measurements of the internal materials and also with direct measurement using an attached alpha spectrometer. The current DRIFT detector, DRIFT-IId, is found to have sensitivity to super(222) Rn of 2.5 muBql super(-1) with current analysis efficiency, potentially opening up DRIFT technology as a new tool for sensitive radon assay of materials.
Abstract
A systematic investigation of Planacon MCP-PMTs was performed using 64 XP85002/ FIT-Q photosensors. These devices are equipped with microchannel plates of reduced resistance. Results of a ...study of their gain stability over time and saturation level in terms of the average anode current are presented. This information allows one to determine the lower limit of the MCP resistance for stable Planacon operation. The spread of the electron multiplication characteristics for the entire production batch is also presented, indicating the remarkably low voltage requirements of these MCP-PMTs. Detection efficiency and noise characteristics, such as dark count rate and afterpulsing level, are also reviewed.
We have measured and compared the characteristics of ALD-coated Planacon® MCP-PMTs (XP85112/A1-Q-L) with their non-ALD counterparts (XP85012/A1-Q). While the latter show excellent performance, the ...ALD-coated sensors have surprisingly low current saturation levels (∼ two orders of magnitude lower than expected) and extremely high gain recovery time (more than 7 orders of magnitude higher than expected). We suspect that these problems might be caused by the unexpected side-effects of the ALD process. To make a definite conclusion, more samples need to be tested, preferably from different production runs. If our observation were confirmed, it would mean a serious technological setback for ALD-coated MCP-PMTs.
