Here we present a succesful adoption within a taxonomic family but across orders in birds of prey. From 1977 through 2021, we monitored the population of the Eastern Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca, ...hereafter Imperial Eagle) on the territory of the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area in the Slovakia. The number of pairs gradually increased there and, altogether 15 pairs were monitored each year since 2018. In 2021, we found the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) chick in the nest of the Imperial Eagle in the Ipeľská pahorkatina Hills during the regular monitoring of breeding pairs. It is generally the first known documented record of a young Common Buzzard reared by the Imperial Eagle without human intervention. Parental care of the Imperial Eagle adults on the nest is described and possible alternative explanations for this case of adoption are discussed.
Between 1 977 and 201 3 nesting of 72 different pairs of imperial eagle was recorded in Slovakia. The nesting population in Slovakia is concentrated in two subpopulations with the nesting area ...distant about 200 km. In Eastern Slovakia nesting of 42 pairs was recorded whilst in Western Slovakia 30 pairs were nesting. Authors present results of 37 years period of survey focused on distribution and trend of nesting population, as well as habitat preferences of the species. The paper compares results from Western and Eastern Slovakia. From Western Slovakia further data are evaluated, such as threats negatively influencing the population, period of hatching and other aspects of nesting biology. During the survey period the number of known nesting pairs in Slovakia has increased from five in 1 977 to 53 in 201 3. In total, 908 nesting events have been recorded during this period with 642 successful nesting events and 1 ,080 fledglings. In Western Slovakia the pairs prefer foothills, whilst in Eastern Slovakia most of the pairs nest in lowlands. Strong anthropic pressure is significantly influencing the distribution and size of the population as well as the habitat preferences of the species.

In 2020, the Rarities Committee of the Slovak Ornithological Society/BirdLife Slovakia reviewed 50 records, of which 46 were accepted in the category A and one in category D. Furthermore, one ...breeding record was accepted. One record of Lesser White-fronted Goose (Anser erythropus), one record of Sociable Lapwing (Vanellus gregarius), two records of Black-legged Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), one record of Pallas´s Gull (Ichthyaetus ichthyaetus), one record of Gull-billed Tern (Gelochelidon nilotica), one record of Great Northern Loon (Gavia immer), one record of Greater Spotted Eagle (Clanga clanga),one record of Booted Eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus), five records od Pallid Harrier (Circus macrourus), one record of Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor homeyeri type), one record of Woodchat Shrike (Lanius senator), two records of Yellow-browed Warbler (Phylloscopus inornatus), two records of Common Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita tristis type), four records of Rosy Starling (Pastor roseus), one record of Common Rock Thrush (Monticola saxatilis), and four records of Citrine Wagtail (Motacilla citreola), one record of Ortolan Bunting (Emberiza hortulana) and two records of Little Bunting (Emberiza pusilla) were the most interesting records in 2020. Rarities Committee accepted observations from the year 2020, but also some valuable observations from years 2007, 2016, 2018 and 2019. In 2021, the Rarities Committee of the Slovak Ornithological Society/BirdLife Slovakia reviewed 56 records, of which 46 were accepted in the category A, one in category C, two in category D and two ...in category E. Furthermore, four breeding records were accepted. Two records of Brant Goose (Branta bernicla), one record of Pink-footed Goose (Anser brachyrhynchus), three records of Lesser White-fronted Goose (Anser erythropus), three records od Tundra Swan (Cygnus columbianus), one record of Baillon´s Crake (Zapornia pusilla), one record of Sociable Lapwing (Vanellus gregarius), two records of Collared Pratincole (Glareola pratincola), one record of Black-winged Pratincole (Glareola nordmanni), two records of Pallas´s Gull (Ichthyaetus ichthyaetus), one record of Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus), one record of Black-winged Kite (Elanus caeruleus), three records of Greater Spotted Eagle (Clanga clanga), one record of Booted Eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus), nine records of Pallid Harrier (Circus macrourus), one record of Yellow-browed Warbler (Phylloscopus inornatus), one record of Common Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita tristis) and one record of Rosy Starling (Pastor roseus) were the most interesting records in 2021. Breeding population of the Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is localized mainly in marginal parts and foothills of Tribeč Mts., Považský Inovec Mts. and Strážovské vrchy Mts. In 2013–2017 we checked 72 ...sites (in study area 1440 km2) and found 30 breeding pairs (i.e. density 2.1 pairs/100 km2). Altogether we recorded 81 breeding attempts, of them 57 successful and 118 chicks (11 nests with 1 chick, 32 with 2, 13 with 3 a 1 with 4 chicks). We analysed distribution and density of nests according to habitats (abandoned stone quarries, active stone quarries, rocky slopes, tree nests in forest, buildings). The abandoned stone pits was the best habitat (in the sense of chicks number; 45 successful nests of 59 nests = 76.3%), when 91 chicks fledged (77.1% of all fledged chicks). Based on this study we can conclude that the population was stable within the study period.
A pair of Red Kite (Milvus milvus) bred successfully in the Ipeľ Hills (Ipeľská pahorkatina), Southern Slovakia in 2019. One young fledged, two eggs remained unhatched in the nest. Two Red Kites were ...observed in this area already in breeding season 2018. It is the first confirmed breeding of Red Kites in this part of western Slovakia.
