Abstract
Evolutionary explanations for mammalian sociality typically center on inclusive-fitness benefits of associating and cooperating with close kin, or close maternal kin as in some whale ...societies, including killer and sperm whales. Their matrilineal structure has strongly influenced the thinking about social structure in less well-studied cetaceans, including beluga whales. In a cross-sectional study of group structure and kinship we found that belugas formed a limited number of distinct group types, consistently observed across populations and habitats. Certain behaviours were associated with group type, but group membership was often dynamic. MtDNA-microsatellite profiling combined with relatedness and network analysis revealed, contrary to predictions, that most social groupings were not predominantly organized around close maternal relatives. They comprised both kin and non-kin, many group members were paternal rather than maternal relatives, and unrelated adult males often traveled together. The evolutionary mechanisms that shape beluga societies are likely complex; fitness benefits may be achieved through reciprocity, mutualism and kin selection. At the largest scales these societies are communities comprising all ages and both sexes where multiple social learning pathways involving kin and non-kin can foster the emergence of cultures. We explore the implications of these findings for species management and the evolution of menopause.
The annual return of beluga whales, Delphinapterus leucas, to traditional seasonal locations across the Arctic may involve migratory culture, while the convergence of discrete summering aggregations ...on common wintering grounds may facilitate outbreeding. Natal philopatry and cultural inheritance, however, has been difficult to assess as earlier studies were of too short a duration, while genetic analyses of breeding patterns, especially across the beluga's Pacific range, have been hampered by inadequate sampling and sparse information on wintering areas. Using a much expanded sample and genetic marker set comprising 1,647 whales, spanning more than two decades and encompassing all major coastal summering aggregations in the Pacific Ocean, we found evolutionary-level divergence among three geographic regions: the Gulf of Alaska, the Bering-Chukchi-Beaufort Seas, and the Sea of Okhotsk (Φst = 0.11-0.32, Rst = 0.09-0.13), and likely demographic independence of (Fst-mtDNA = 0.02-0.66), and in many cases limited gene flow (Fst-nDNA = 0.0-0.02; K = 5-6) among, summering groups within regions. Assignment tests identified few immigrants within summering aggregations, linked migrating groups to specific summering areas, and found that some migratory corridors comprise whales from multiple subpopulations (PBAYES = 0.31:0.69). Further, dispersal is male-biased and substantial numbers of closely related whales congregate together at coastal summering areas. Stable patterns of heterogeneity between areas and consistently high proportions (~20%) of close kin (including parent-offspring) sampled up to 20 years apart within areas (G = 0.2-2.9, p>0.5) is the first direct evidence of natal philopatry to migration destinations in belugas. Using recent satellite telemetry findings on belugas we found that the spatial proximity of winter ranges has a greater influence on the degree of both individual and genetic exchange than summer ranges (rwinter-Fst-mtDNA = 0.9, rsummer-Fst-nDNA = 0.1). These findings indicate widespread natal philopatry to summering aggregation and entire migratory circuits, and provide compelling evidence that migratory culture and kinship helps maintain demographically discrete beluga stocks that can overlap in time and space.

The circumpolar Arctic ringed seal (Pusa hispida) occupies its fast-ice breeding habitat for four to five months during winter and the pack ice or open water of adjacent areas for the rest of the ...year. From 1971–78 and 1992–2019, we sampled approximately 100 ringed seals annually from western Prince Albert Sound (WPAS), the prime ringed seal fast-ice breeding habitat in Canada’s Western Arctic, adjacent to primary overwinter foraging habitat in eastern Amundsen Gulf (EAG). As our metric of body condition, we measured ventral blubber depth corrected for body size. As our metrics of reproduction, we measured the annual ovulation rate of multiparous females and percent pups in the open-water harvest. We examined these biological parameters in relation to the winter Arctic Oscillation Index (winAOI) and the timing of sea ice clearance in EAG in spring. There were no significant effects of age or sample month (June or July) on adult blubber depth, but significant sex and year effects and, in females, ovulation status effects. Across the series, as we have observed previously through 2011, there was a sustained temporal declining trend in blubber depth in adults of both sexes. There was no temporal trend in residual blubber depth, no correlation between blubber depth and sea ice clearance date in EAG, and a quasi-cyclic pattern in blubber depth that tracked some of the phases of the winAOI. Annual ovulation rates were mainly in the 80%–100% range and correlated with percent pups in the open-water harvest in the same year. Three (1974, 2005, 2012) of the 36 y had reproductive failures, when ≥ 50% of the multiparous females failed to ovulate. In each case, ovulation rates returned to normal within 1–3 y. Low annual ovulation rates were correlated with late sea ice clearance in EAG in spring, with two ovulation failure events taking place in years when spring sea ice clearance was delayed by five to six weeks. The most recent ovulation failure (2012) differed in that it came in an average ice year but at the end of a six-year sequence of negative residual mean blubber depths. Earlier spring sea ice clearance in WPAS, based on the observed rate of 3.8 d per decade, would on average not result in the physical loss of sea ice for pupping in this core habitat before 2140. The mechanisms involved in the sustained declining temporal trend in body condition, linkage with some phases of the winAOI, and the temporary but episodic failures of ovulation are complex and not fully explained by either the timing of sea ice clearance or the winAOI. Until the complex mix of factors, pressures and responses are understood, our ability to predict the impacts of a changing climate on ringed seals will remain limited.
Le phoque annelé de l’Arctique circumpolaire (Pusa hispida) occupe son habitat de reproduction sur glace rapide pendant quatre à cinq mois de l’hiver, et la banquise ou les eaux libres adjacentes pendant le reste de l’année. Entre 1971 et 1978 puis entre 1992 et 2019, nous avons échantillonné environ 100 phoques annelés par année dans l’ouest du détroit de Prince-Albert, le principal habitat de reproduction sur glace rapide du phoque annelé dans l’ouest de l’Arctique canadien, adjacent au principal habitat d’alimentation hivernal de l’est du golfe Amundsen. Comme paramètre de mesure de la condition corporelle, nous avons mesuré l’épaisseur du lard ventral du phoque, pour laquelle nous avons appliqué une correction en fonction de la taille du corps. Comme paramètre de reproduction, nous avons mesuré le taux annuel d’ovulation des femelles multipares et le pourcentage de veaux récoltés en eaux libres. Nous avons examiné ces paramètres biologiques par rapport à l’indice d’oscillation arctique hivernal et par rapport au moment du dégagement des glaces de mer dans l’est du golfe Amundsen au printemps. Nous n’avons pas remarqué d’effets importants en ce qui a trait à l’âge ou au mois d’échantillonnage (juin ou juillet) sur l’épaisseur du lard de l’adulte, mais nous avons constaté des effets importants en ce qui a trait au sexe et à l’année, et, chez les femelles, des effets en matière d’ovulation. Entre les séries, comme nous l’avions déjà observé jusqu’en 2011, il y avait une importante tendance temporelle à la baisse sur le plan de l’épaisseur du lard chez les adultes des deux sexes. Il n’y avait pas de tendance temporelle du point de vue de l’épaisseur résiduelle du lard, aucune corrélation entre l’épaisseur du lard et la date du dégagement des glaces de mer dans l’est du golfe Amundsen, et un modèle quasi cyclique du point de vue de l’épaisseur du lard par rapport à certaines phases de l’indice d’oscillation arctique hivernal. Les taux d’ovulation annuels se situaient principalement dans la gamme du 80 % à 100 %, en corrélation avec le pourcentage de veaux de la récolte en eaux libres pendant la même année. Trois des 36 années (1974, 2005, 2012) ont enregistré des échecs de reproduction, lorsque 50 % des femelles multipares n’ont pas ovulé. Dans chaque cas, les taux d’ovulation sont retournés à la normale en un à trois ans. Les faibles taux d’ovulation annuels ont été corrélés avec le dégagement tardif des glaces de mer dans l’est du golfe Amundsen au printemps, deux des grands échecs d’ovulation ayant eu lieu pendant les années où le dégagement printanier des glaces de mer a été retardé de cinq à six semaines. Dans le détroit de Prince-Albert, le dégagement plus hâtif des glaces de mer au printemps, d’après un taux observé de 3,8 jours par décennie, ne se traduirait pas, en moyenne, par la perte physique de glaces de mer pour la mise bas des veaux dans cet habitat important avant 2140. Les mécanismes liés à la tendance temporelle soutenue à la baisse de la condition corporelle, le lien avec certaines phases de l’indice d’oscillation arctique hivernal, et les échecs d’ovulation temporaires, mais épisodiques sont complexes et ne s’expliquent pas entièrement par le moment du dégagement des glaces de mer ou par l’indice d’oscillation arctique hivernal. Tant que le mélange complexe de facteurs, de pressions et de réponses ne sera pas compris, notre capacité à prévoir les incidences du changement climatique sur le phoque annelé sera restreinte.

Environmental variation influences resource distribution, thereby affecting animal movement and foraging decisions. Climate change is altering environmental processes worldwide, but particularly in ...the Arctic, where changes in the phenology of sea ice have been redistributing resources across space and time. How polar marine predators such as ringed seals Pusa hispida hispida, whose ecology is tightly tied to sea ice, respond to different sea ice dynamics across large spatial scales is generally unknown. Here, behavioural states (resident and traveling) were estimated using state–space models on adult (n = 45) and subadult (n = 85) ringed seal satellite telemetry tracks from 6 Arctic locations. Tagged ringed seals spanned a wide latitudinal (56.54° to 75.58° N) and sea ice phenological range from short (1 to 2 mo) to longer (6 mo) ice-free periods. We assessed the influences of age class and several intra- and inter-annual environmental variables on ringed seal movement ecology. Both adults and subadults spent most of the ice-free season in a resident state (93 and 77%, respectively). A latitudinal gradient was characterised, where longer ice-free seasons and less inter-annual variability in sea ice phenology at lower latitudes were related to ringed seals spending more time in a resident state than their conspecifics at higher latitudes (90 versus 58%, respectively), where the ice-free season was shorter and sea ice phenology between years was less synchronous. Ringed seals are responding to latitudinal differences in sea ice phenology which affect prey distribution, suggesting plasticity in their foraging decisions and spatiotemporal differences in prey distribution across the rapidly changing Arctic.
We examined the relationship between ringed seal body condition and reproduction and spring sea ice conditions in prime ringed seal habitat in Canada's western Arctic during 1992-2011. Since 1970, ...ice conditions in east Amundsen Gulf and west Prince Albert Sound have shown only a slight trend toward earlier ice clearance (breakup) in spring (3-7 days per decade) (p < 0.10) and no trend toward later freeze-up or increased variability in timing of spring ice clearance. A subsistence harvest-based sample of 2281 ringed seals was obtained during 1992-2011 from Masoyak, a traditional hunting camp located on the northwest shore of west Prince Albert Sound and less than 5 km from east Amundsen Gulf. The results revealed a statistically significant trend of decreasing mean annual body condition of ringed seals (using an index of length-mass-blubber depth LMD: adults, 0.14 m¹.⁵/kg⁰.⁵/y; subadults, 0.24 m¹.⁵/kg⁰.⁵/y) over the past two decades. A parallel result was that mean annual body condition of adults and subadults was correlated with the timing of fast ice clearance in spring (later ice clearance = worse condition). This correlation was most obvious in the extreme ice years in all sex/age groupings and was statistically significant for subadults. In mature females sampled since, 1992, annual ovulation rates averaged 92.4 ± 16.3% (SD) and were greater than 80%, and mostly at 100%, in all years but two. Failure to ovulate was obvious in 2005, the most extreme late ice clearance year in our series, when only 30.0% of the mature adult females sampled ovulated. At the same time, values for seal body condition indices (adult females, LMD = 11.3; adult males, LMD = 12.4) and percent pups in the harvest (3.3%) were among the lowest recorded, and spring ice clearance was 38 d later than the 1992-2011 average. While this and previous studies indicate that the seal population in this core habitat has recovered from natural and extreme-year sea ice fluctuations over the past four decades, the potentially magnified effect of several consecutive extreme ice years, compounded by the concurrent decline in seal body condition that we have now detected over the past 20 years, is of particular concern. Un échantillon recueilli à partir de 2 281 phoques annelés ayant fait l'objet d'une récolte de subsistance a été obtenu entre 1992 et 2011 à Masoyak, un camp de chasse traditionnel situé sur la côte nord-ouest de l'ouest du détroit de Prince-Albert et à moins de cinq kilomètres de l'est du golfe Amundsen. Cette corrélation était plus évidente au cours des années où la glace était extrême chez tous les groupements en fonction du sexe ou de l'âge, et elle était statistiquement significative chez les préreproducteurs. Parmi les femelles matures échantillonnées depuis 1992, les taux d'ovulation annuels atteignaient 92,4 ± 16,3 % (DS) en moyenne, et étaient plus grands que 80 %, et à près de 100 % au cours de toutes les années, sauf deux. L'anovulation était évidente en 2005, ce qui correspondait à l'année de notre série où la débâcle a été la plus tardive, lorsque seulement 30,0 % des femelles adultes et matures qui avaient été échantillonnées ont ovulé. En même temps, les valeurs relatives aux indices de l'état corporel des phoques (femelles adultes, LMD = 11,3; mâles adultes, LMD = 12,4) et au pourcentage de petits faisant partie de la récolte (3,3 %) figuraient parmi les valeurs les plus basses à n'avoir jamais été enregistrées, et la débâcle printanière était plus tardive de 38 jours par rapport à la moyenne de 1992-2011. Bien que cette étude et des études antérieures laissent croire que la population de phoques de cet habitat important a réussi à se remettre des fluctuations naturelles et extrêmes des conditions de glace des quatre dernières décennies, l'effet potentiellement grossissant de plusieurs années consécutives de glace extrême, allié au déclin concurrent de l'état corporel des phoques que nous avons décelé au cours des 20 dernières années, présente une source d'inquiétude particulière.

Radio telemetry and t-bar tagging were used to locate sites used by Hornaday River Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) for overwintering, spawning, and summer feeding. Thirty char, 21 in August 1995 and ...nine in July and August 1999, were captured, radio-tagged, and released back into the Hornaday River. Tracking was done over 14 months in 1995–96 and over three months in 1999, using either aircraft (10 flights) or snowmobiles traveling on the river ice in winter (7 trips). Of 12 radio-tagged char that were relocated during winter 1995–96 and not caught in the 1995 upstream migration fall fishery, 11 (92%) ultimately overwintered in the reach of the Hornaday between Coalmine and Akluk Creek; three of these did so in consecutive years. This area is characterized by groundwater inputs and deep pools (> 2 m) that do not freeze to the riverbed in winter. Another important overwintering site was found in a similarly deep channel on the west side of the Hornaday River estuary, where half of the char radio-tagged in fall 1999 spent the winter of 1999–2000. Spawning locations were discerned through circumstantial evidence from the movements of three radio-tagged fish over entire annual cycles. The locations that were indicated as spawning habitat were all in the main stem of the Hornaday River, in deep (> 2 m), groundwater-fed pools between Coalmine and Akluk Creek. Fourteen percent of 239 char t-bar tagged at Pearce Point in July–August 1997 were caught at the mouth of the Hornaday River, on average within 25 days of tagging, which indicates that the nearshore area of Pearce Point, characterized by upwelling and enhanced productivity, is an important summer feeding area for this stock. This identification of overwintering, spawning, and summer feeding habitats contributes to an emerging list of areas for which it would be prudent to monitor habitat quality, change, and integrity given contemporary changes in climate and the potential for near-future anthropogenic activities in this watershed. La radiotélémesure et les étiquettes en T ont été employées pour repérer les lieux utilisés par l'omble chevalier (Salvelinus alpinus) de la rivière Hornaday pour l'hivernage, le frai et l'alimentation estivale. Trente ombles ont été capturés dans la rivière Hornaday, soit 21 en août 1995 et neuf en juillet et en août 1999. Des radio-émetteurs ont été posés sur ces ombles, après quoi ils ont été relâchés dans la rivière. Nous les avons suivis pendant 14 mois en 1995-1996 ainsi que pendant trois mois en 1999, en avion (dix vols) ou en motoneige sur la glace de la rivière pendant l'hiver (sept expéditions). Un autre lieu d'hivernage important a été trouvé dans un chenal tout aussi profond du côté ouest de l'estuaire de la rivière Hornaday, où la moitié des ombles dotés de radio-émetteurs à l'automne 1999 ont passé l'hiver 1999-2000. Les lieux de frai ont été discernés au moyen de preuves circonstancielles à partir des mouvements de trois poissons munis de radio-émetteurs pendant l'ensemble des cycles annuels. Les lieux qui ont été indiqués à titre d'habitat de frai se trouvaient tous dans le tronçon principal de la rivière Hornaday, dans des fosses profondes (> 2 m) alimentées par de l'eau souterraine situées entre Coalmine et le ruisseau Akluk. Quatorze pour cent des 239 ombles auxquels une étiquette en T a été posée à Pearce Point en juillet-août 1997 ont été attrapés à l'embouchure de la rivière Hornaday, en moyenne 25 jours après avoir été étiquetés, ce qui indique que l'aire sublittorale de Pearce Point, caractérisée par une remontée d'eau et une productivité accrue, constitue une aire d'alimentation estivale importante pour ce stock. L'identification des habitats d'hivernage, de frai et d'alimentation estivale s'ajoute à une nouvelle liste d'endroits pour lesquels il serait prudent de surveiller la qualité, la modification et l'intégrité de l'habitat à la lumière des changements climatiques contemporains et des activités anthropiques susceptibles de se produire dans ce bassin hydrographique dans un avenir rapproché.

We used satellite telemetry to examine bowhead whale movement behavior, residence times, and dive behavior in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea, 2006 – 18. We explored the timing and duration of use of three ...subregions (western, central, eastern) within the Alaskan Beaufort Sea and applied a two-state switching state-space model to infer bowhead whale behavior state as either transiting or lingering. Transiting whales made direct movements whereas lingering whales changed direction frequently and were presumably feeding. In spring, whales migrated across the Alaskan Beaufort Sea in 7.17 ± 0.41 days, primarily off the continental shelf over deep water. During the autumn migration, whales spent over twice as much time crossing the Alaskan Beaufort Sea than in spring, averaging 18.66 ± 2.30 days, spending 10.05 ± 1.22 days in the western subregion near Point Barrow. Most whales remained on the shelf during the autumn migration and frequently dove to the seafloor, where they spent 45% of their time regardless of behavioral state. Consistent dive behavior in autumn suggests that the whales were looking for food while migrating, and the identification of lingering locations likely reflects feeding. The lack of lingering locations in the eastern and central subregions suggests that prey densities are rarely sufficient to warrant whales pausing their migration for multiple days, unlike in the western subregion near Point Barrow, where bowhead whales regularly lingered for long periods of time.

The Bering–Chukchi–Beaufort (BCB) population of bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) ranges across the seasonally ice-covered waters of the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort seas. We used locations from 54 bowhead whales, obtained by satellite telemetry between 2006 and 2012, to define areas of concentrated use, termed “core-use areas”. We identified six primary core-use areas and describe the timing of use and physical characteristics (oceanography, sea ice, and winds) associated with these areas. In spring, most whales migrated from wintering grounds in the Bering Sea to the Cape Bathurst polynya, Canada (Area 1), and spent the most time in the vicinity of the halocline at depths <75m, which are within the euphotic zone, where calanoid copepods ascend following winter diapause. Peak use of the polynya occurred between 7 May and 5 July; whales generally left in July, when copepods are expected to descend to deeper depths. Between 12 July and 25 September, most tagged whales were located in shallow shelf waters adjacent to the Tuktoyaktuk Peninsula, Canada (Area 2), where wind-driven upwelling promotes the concentration of calanoid copepods. Between 22 August and 2 November, whales also congregated near Point Barrow, Alaska (Area 3), where east winds promote upwelling that moves zooplankton onto the Beaufort shelf, and subsequent relaxation of these winds promoted zooplankton aggregations. Between 27 October and 8 January, whales congregated along the northern shore of Chukotka, Russia (Area 4), where zooplankton likely concentrated along a coastal front between the southeastward-flowing Siberian Coastal Current and northward-flowing Bering Sea waters. The two remaining core-use areas occurred in the Bering Sea: Anadyr Strait (Area 5), where peak use occurred between 29 November and 20 April, and the Gulf of Anadyr (Area 6), where peak use occurred between 4 December and 1 April; both areas exhibited highly fractured sea ice. Whales near the Gulf of Anadyr spent almost half of their time at depths between 75 and 100m, usually near the seafloor, where a subsurface front between cold Anadyr Water and warmer Bering Shelf Water presumably aggregates zooplankton. The amount of time whales spent near the seafloor in the Gulf of Anadyr, where copepods (in diapause) and, possibly, euphausiids are expected to aggregate provides strong evidence that bowhead whales are feeding in winter. The timing of bowhead spring migration corresponds with when zooplankton are expected to begin their spring ascent in April. The core-use areas we identified are also generally known from other studies to have high densities of whales and we are confident these areas represent the majority of important feeding areas during the study (2006–2012). Other feeding areas, that we did not detect, likely existed during the study and we expect core-use area boundaries to shift in response to changing hydrographic conditions.
Satellite-linked time-depth recorders were deployed on 17 ringed seals in early summer in 1999, 2000, and 2010, near the Inuvialuit community of Ulukhaktok, Northwest Territories, Canada. The main ...objective was to investigate movements and diving behaviour of ringed seals in the Prince Albert Sound (PAS) and eastern Amundsen Gulf (EAG) regions in relation to season, sex, and age-class. Tags performed well on 16 of 17 tagged seals, with average tracking periods of 256 d (SD 69, range: 134-352). Adult and subadult ringed seals traveled considerable distances throughout the open water period (mean = 5844 km, range = 1232-9473 km), using vast home ranges during this season, shown with 90 Percent Volume Contours (90 PVC) averaging 122854 km² for subadults, 76658 km² for adult females, and 21649 km² for adult males. Overall, adults spent 69.5% of the observed open water days in foraging/resident mode and 22.8% in traveling mode. The majority (75%) of total observed foraging/resident time was spent in PAS and EAG. Eleven of 12 adults made forays outside EAG and PAS to distant areas, including Prince of Wales Strait (7 seals), Viscount Melville Sound (6), Minto Inlet (4), western Amundsen Gulf (4), and six other zones. During open water season, subadults spent 36.8% traveling and 51.4% foraging/resident, also mainly in EAG and PAS (61%), but they all traveled to distant zones, eight in total. During winter, all tagged adult females, five of seven adult males, and three of four subadults returned to PAS and EAG to occupy winter home ranges that were on average 15% of the size of the open water home range (mean winter ranges = 1299 km² for adult males, 3599 km² for adult females, and 30499 km² for subadults). The mean size of the winter home ranges varied by as much as a factor of 10 among the three winters examined. Seal movements were most restricted during the winters with extensive fast ice (1999-2000 and 2010-11) and least restricted during the winter (2000-01) when fast ice did not form in EAG. In winter, adult females made more long, deep dives than either adult males or subadults. Le déplacement des phoques était plus restreint pendant les hivers où la glace était rapide (1999-2000 et 2010-2011) et moins restreint pendant l'hiver (2000-2001) où la glace rapide ne s'est pas formée dans l'EGA. L'hiver, les femelles adultes faisaient plus de plongées longues et profondes que les mâles adultes ou les jeunes adultes.

The Tarium Niryutait MPA (TNMPA) was created in 2010, through the collaborative efforts of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Inuvialuit, private industry and local stakeholders. The purpose of the ...TNMPA is to conserve and protect the biological resources within the Mackenzie Estuary, ensuring viability of a healthy population of beluga whales. TNMPA regulations allow for the conduct of certain industry activities (e.g., dredging, transportation, and hydrocarbon exploration and production activity), as long as disturbance, damage, destruction or removal of belugas do not occur or are not expected. Our goal is to summarize baseline knowledge of the times, areas and patterns of aggregation of belugas in the TNMPA, to inform future monitoring, research and environmental assessments of any developments proposed for the TNMPA. Sightings of surfaced belugas in the Mackenzie River estuary made during seven summers of aerial surveys between 1977 and 1992 were examined using contemporary geospatial analytical methods. A total of 77 aerial surveys met the minimum criteria for inclusion: flown in their entirety, without interruption, under calm sea conditions, and with full visibility. The distribution of surfaced belugas was significantly clustered in three time periods (June 26–July 9, July 10–20, July 21–31) and in all sub areas of the TNMPA (Ripley's L, p < 0.0001). Sighting rates varied by subarea and time period, with Niaqunnaq Bay having rates 3–4 times higher (p < 0.0001) in the corresponding period, compared with West Mackenzie (WM), East Mackenzie (EM) and Kugmallit (KB) bays, in all but WM in late July. During early and mid-July of 1977–1985, belugas were aggregated in seven localized, recurrent geographic areas within the TNMPA, termed here as ‘hot spots’. Results will foster more confident and informed decisions about the acceptability of proposed industry activities in the TNMPA, ensuring assessments are evidence-based and not unnecessary restrictive.
