In this paper, we demonstrate that improvements in the Cu2O film quality and consequently the output power of Cu2O/Cu solar cells can be achieved by decreasing the load current density used in production of the film by anodic oxidation. Cu2O films were fabricated under various oxidizing condition in an aqueous solution of CuSO4, NaCl and LiCl at a temperature of 86°C. The load current density and loading time were varied. The variations in the output power of the solar cells with film thickness and quality, determined by the electrical resistance, the amount of CuCl in the Cu2O film, and the crystal quality and crystal grain size of the Cu2O, were evaluated. From the maximum value of the output power, the best film thickness of the Cu2O film was found to be about 8–10μm. Moreover, Cu2O films with lower electrical resistance, less CuCl, greater crystal quality and larger crystal grain size led to more powerful solar cells, i.e., higher output power. These Cu2O films were obtained by decreasing the load current density used in fabrication. The highest output power achieved (with load current density=1.25mA/cm2, loading time=8h) was 702nW.
Solid tumours develop an acidic extracellular environment with high concentration of lactic acid, and lactic acid produced by glycolysis has been assumed to be the major cause of tumour acidity. ...Experiments using lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)-deficient ras-transfected Chinese hamster ovarian cells have been undertaken to address directly the hypothesis that lactic acid production is responsible for tumour acidification. The variant cells produce negligible quantities of lactic acid and consume minimal amounts of glucose compared with parental cells. Lactate-producing parental cells acidified lightly-buffered medium but variant cells did not. Tumours derived from parental and variant cells implanted into nude mice were found to have mean values of extracellular pH (pHe) of 7.03 +/- 0.03 and 7.03 +/- 0.05, respectively, both of which were significantly lower than that of normal muscle (pHe = 7.43 +/- 0.03; P < 0.001). Lactic acid concentration in variant tumours (450 +/- 90 microg g(-1) wet weight) was much lower than that in parental tumours (1880 +/- 140 microg/g(-1)) and similar to that in serum (400 +/- 35 microg/g(-1)). These data show discordance between mean levels of pHe and lactate content in tumours; the results support those of Newell et al (1993) and suggest that the production of lactic acid via glycolysis causes acidification of culture medium, but is not the only mechanism, and is probably not the major mechanism responsible for the development of an acidic environment within solid tumours.
Background and Aim
Proton pump inhibitors and vonoprazan (a potassium-competitive acid blocker) are recommended as first-line treatments for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, few ...reports have investigated the onset of action of these agents for GERD symptom relief. The present study compared the symptom relief of esomeprazole with that of vonoprazan via monitoring self-reported GERD symptoms after treatment initiation.
Methods
This was a prospective, multicenter, randomized, open-label, parallel group, comparative clinical study between esomeprazole (20 mg/day) and vonoprazan (20 mg/day) administered for 4 weeks to patients with GERD symptoms. Patients who had scores ≥ 8 on the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Questionnaire (GerdQ) were defined as having GERD and enrolled in this study. Sixty patients were randomly assigned to either the esomeprazole group (
n
= 30) or the vonoprazan group (
n
= 30). Treatment response rates in each drug group were evaluated according to the GerdQ. The Frequency Scale for the Symptoms of GERD (FSSG) scores from the 1st day after treatment initiation and the Global Overall Symptom (GOS) scale scores during treatment were also evaluated.
Results
At 4 weeks, the treatment response rates for symptom relief according to the GerdQ were 88.0% in the esomeprazole group and 81.8% in the vonoprazan group. The GOS scales, which reflect the impact of GERD symptoms, were similar for both groups. The FSSG scores decreased from the 1st to the 14th day in both groups.
Conclusions
There were no substantial differences in the symptom relief between the two groups at any time point in this short-term study.

)). Our observations show QPOs of optical flux and linear polarization, and γ-ray flux, with cycles as short as approximately 13 h during the highest state of the outburst. The QPO properties match the expectations of current-driven kink instabilities
near a recollimation shock about 5 parsecs (pc) from the black hole in the wake of an apparent superluminal feature moving down the jet. Such a kink is apparent in a microwave Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) image.
ABSTRACT
In 2021 BL Lacertae underwent an extraordinary activity phase, which was intensively followed by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) Collaboration. We present the WEBT optical data in ...the BVRI bands acquired at 36 observatories around the world. In mid-2021 the source showed its historical maximum, with R = 11.14. The light curves display many episodes of intraday variability, whose amplitude increases with source brightness, in agreement with a geometrical interpretation of the long-term flux behaviour. This is also supported by the long-term spectral variability, with an almost achromatic trend with brightness. In contrast, short-term variations are found to be strongly chromatic and are ascribed to energetic processes in the jet. We also analyse the optical polarimetric behaviour, finding evidence of a strong correlation between the intrinsic fast variations in flux density and those in polarization degree, with a time delay of about 13 h. This suggests a common physical origin. The overall behaviour of the source can be interpreted as the result of two mechanisms: variability on time-scales greater than several days is likely produced by orientation effects, while either shock waves propagating in the jet, or magnetic reconnection, possibly induced by kink instabilities in the jet, can explain variability on shorter time-scales. The latter scenario could also account for the appearance of quasi-periodic oscillations, with periods from a few days to a few hours, during outbursts, when the jet is more closely aligned with our line of sight and the time-scales are shortened by relativistic effects.

In this study, we report a case of a 33-year-old infertile female with a perforate transverse vaginal septum and incomplete septate uterus who had wished to bear a child for over ten years, and consulted our hospital. Transverse vaginal septum was considered to be an etiological factor for infertility. After surgery for transverse vaginal septum, in vitro fertilization achieved pregnancy.
The effects of insulin sensitivity and lipid metabolism of dietary lard, eicosapentaenoic acid-rich oil (EPA oil) or arachidonic acid oil (AA oil) in Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats ...were examined. Blood glucose was not different in each group at 30, 60, 120 min on an oral glucose tolerance test. Fasting blood glucose levels were lower in lard and AA oil groups than in controls. Hepatic triglyceride concentration and liver histochemistry revealed that the fat content was higher in the lard group and the AA oil group than in controls. The EPA oil group showed TG levels as high as the control group. Serum total cholesterol in the EPA oil group was lower, while the level in the AA oil group was higher than in the lard and control groups. HDL cholesterol was 1.5-fold higher in the AA oil group than in controls. Dietary EPA oil or AA oil supplementation showed different effects on lipid metabolism in this model.
To assess the usefulness of hemorrhoidal artery ligation (HAL) for internal hemorrhoids with a newly devised instrument (the Moricorn).
We devised a new instrument (the Moricorn) that is used in ...conjunction with a Doppler flowmeter. This instrument allows for easy and safe ligation of the hemorrhoidal artery. HAL with the Moricorn was performed on 116 patients with internal hemorrhoids who had episodes of anal pain, bleeding, and prolapse. One month after treatment, the effect was evaluated on the basis of improvement of symptoms and the shrinkage of hemorrhoidal tissue.
The treatment's effect was observed in 50 of 52 patients (96%) with pain, 50 of 64 (78%) with prolapse, and 92 of 96 (95%) with bleeding. No patient required anesthesia throughout the entire procedure. No major complications were encountered with this treatment.
HAL with the Moricorn is a simple, safe, and effective method. However, further observations predicated on a longer follow-up, a larger number of patients, and comparisons with other conventional treatments are called for.
