The localized Web sites of twelve global brands were evaluated via Web impact factor (WIF), a measurement of the number of inlinking pages in a Web site divided by the number of indexed pages of that ...Web site in the databases of a search engine. The highest and the lowest WIF, and the mean WIF were identified and compared for each of the twelve global brands to reveal their visibility and impact on the Internet. The WIF of the brand Web sites was also compared between six pair of direct competitors in six industries. No correlation was found between the rank of a global brand and the value of its Web site's WIF.
Users' personal information is essential for personalized online services. However, because of ever-increasing privacy issues, individuals are worried about their privacy security more than ever. ...Some of them tend to keep their personal information away from the internet, while the others simply submit fake information for registration. Based on the relevant literatures, a theoretical model is proposed with the factors that influence users' intention to provide personal information online. These factors belong to three groups, which are individual-related, website-related and situation-related. Moreover, the theoretical model with relative hypotheses, are verified by Structural Equation Model through the empirical research. Furthermore, according to the results, this paper presents some suggestions to help websites increase the number of registered users, and collect valid information more effectively and efficiently. This article reports findings from a study of the geographic distribution of foreign authors in the Journal of American Society for Information Science & Technology (JASIST) and Journal of ...Documentation (JDoc). Bibliographic data about foreign authors and their geographic locations from a 50‐year publication period (1950–1999) are analyzed per 5‐year period for both JASIST and JDoc. The distribution of foreign authors by geographic locations was analyzed for the overall trends in JASIST and JDoc. UK and Canadian authors are the most frequent foreign authors in JASIST. Authors from the United States and Canada are the most frequent foreign authors in JDoc. The top 10 geographic locations with highest number of foreign authors and the top 10 most productive foreign authors were also identified and compared for their characteristics and trends.
The in-links to 53 American Library Association (ALA)-accredited library and information science (LIS) schools' websites were analyzed, echoing the suggestion Thomas and Willett made that hosting a ...wide range of topics would help increase the visibility of, or attract more, sitations to a website. More importantly, these topics should be outreaching and of current value to people outside of the host site. The sites that generated the majority of in-links for the LIS schools are in the ORG, EDU, or NET domain. Such sitations are also content-based as opposed to the directory-type references from sites in the COM domain. Links to the outside world from the 53 schools, to a certain extent, reveal their connectivity with other sites on the Web. Based on co-link data, the structure underlying the 53 LIS schools was delineated. Webometrics offers a different type of institutional evaluation measurement to what is available in bibliometrics. Nevertheless, webometric research must be conducted with caution because both the data source (i.e., web-based data) and data collection instrument (e.g., web search engines) have obvious deficiencies.
This paper studies corporate blogs as virtual communities, focusing on the distribution, categorization and characteristics of 40 Fortune 500 Companies' blogs. Firstly, the 40 corporate blogs were ...classified by industries to see which industries are active advocates of corporate blogs. Secondly, the 40 corporate blogs were first grouped in direct competitor clusters and then categorized into four types of virtual communities: 1) Community of interest, 2) Goal-oriented community of interest, 3) Learner's community, and 4) Community of practice. Thirdly, eight common elements were identified and compared for each of the 40 corporate blogs to find out their major characteristics. Finally, the implications of this study and future research directions were outlined in the conclusion. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

This research investigated conceptual alteration in medical article titles translation between English and Chinese with a twofold purpose: one was to further justify the findings from a pilot study, ...and the other was to further investigate how the concepts were altered in translation. The research corpus of 800 medical article titles in English and Chinese was selected from two English medical journals and two Chinese medical journals. The analysis was based on the pairing of concepts in English and Chinese and their conceptual similarity/dissimilarity via translation between English and Chinese. Two kinds of conceptual alteration were discussed: one was apparent conceptual alteration that was obvious with addition or omission of concepts in translation. The other was latent conceptual alteration that was not obvious, and can only be recognized by the differences between the original and translated concepts. The findings from the pilot study were verified with the findings from this research. Additional findings, for example, the addition/omission of single-word and multiword concepts in the general and medical domain and, implicit information vs. explicit information, were also discussed. The findings provided useful insights into future studies on crosslanguage information retrieval via medical translation between English and Chinese, and other languages as well. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
This research investigates the phenomenon of conceptual alteration in medical article titles translation as information transfer between English and Chinese, and vice versa. The purpose of this ...investigation is twofold: one is to further investigate concepts altered in English-to-Chinese and Chinese-to-English translation of medical article titles, and the other is to further justify the findings from the pilot study on conceptual alteration via English-to-Chinese and Chinese-to-English translation of medical article titles. The research corpus of 800 medical article titles in English and Chinese was selected from an existing collection of medical article titles obtained from two English medical journals and two Chinese medical journals. The observation and analysis were based on (1) The pairing of concepts in both of the original medical article titles in the source language and the translated medical article titles in the target language; and (2) The conceptual similarity and dissimilarity of the paired concepts in both original and translated medical article titles in English and Chinese. Two kinds of conceptual alteration were observed and discussed: one was apparent conceptual alteration that was obvious and easy to notice in the presence or absence of concepts in the source and target language in translation. The other was latent conceptual alteration that was not obvious and can only be recognized by the differences between the original and translated concepts in English and Chinese. Both the omission and the addition, either apparent or latent, of concepts were assessed and analyzed in different categories. The findings from the pilot study have been verified with the findings that were obtained in this research. Additional findings from this study, e.g., the omission of English subtitles and implicit information vs. explicit information, are also discussed with examples. The findings from this study provide useful insights into future studies on cross-language information retrieval with parallel corpora via medical translation not only between English and Chinese, but also between other languages.
