Childhood trauma is a critical risk factor for depression. Many studies have investigated the pathway between childhood trauma and depression, especially the mediating or moderating effects of neuroticism or resilience, but the results were inconsistent and there was no full model of these interactive factors. In addition, high prevalence of depression existed in normative college students, and few studies focused on their pathway between childhood trauma and depressive scores. Therefore, this study intended to examine the relationships among childhood trauma, resilience, neuroticism and depressive scores in normative college students.
Normative college students (n = 404) aged 18–22 years were recruited as participants from universities in Guangzhou in 2019. The participants were asked to complete four self-report questionnaires, including the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), Conner-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II).
Results revealed that the effect of childhood trauma on depressive scores in normative college students was mediated by neuroticism. In addition, resilience moderated the association between childhood trauma and neuroticism.
This study helps to elucidate the mechanism that underlined the pathway between childhood trauma and depressive scores in normative college students. These findings may give indications of developing measures to strengthen resilience and lower neuroticism in normative college students with childhood traumatic experiences.
The present online study surveyed drivers of SAE Level 2 partially automated cars on automation use and attitudes towards automation. Respondents reported high levels of trust in their partially ...automated cars to maintain speed and distance to the car ahead (M = 4.41), and to feel safe most of the time (M = 4.22) on a scale from 1 to 5. Respondents indicated to always know when the car is in partially automated driving mode (M = 4.42), and to monitor the performance of their car most of the time (M = 4.34). A low rating was obtained for engaging in other activities while driving the partially automated car (M = 2.27). Partial automation did, however, increase reported engagement in secondary tasks that are already performed during manual driving (i.e., the proportion of respondents reporting to observe the landscape, use the phone for texting, navigation, music selection and calls, and eat during partially automated driving was higher in comparison to manual driving). Unsafe behaviour was rare with 1% of respondents indicating to rarely monitor the road, and another 1% to sleep during partially automated driving. Structural equation modeling revealed a strong, positive relationship between perceived safety and trust (β = 0.69, p = 0.001). Performance expectancy had the strongest effects on automation use, followed by driver engagement, trust, and non-driving related task engagement. Perceived safety interacted with automation use through trust. We recommend future research to evaluate the development of perceived safety and trust in time, and revisit the influence of driver engagement and non-driving related task engagement, which emerged as new constructs related to trust in partial automation.

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), collecting data with mobile sinks is an effective way to solve the "energy hole problem". However, most of existing algorithms of mobile sinks ignore the load ...balance of rendezvous nodes, which will significantly shorten the network lifetime. Moreover, most mobile sinks are usually required to visit locations of sensor nodes without taking advantage of their communication ranges. Therefore, this paper proposes an energy-efficient trajectory planning algorithm (EETP) based on multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) to shorten the trajectory length of the mobile sink and balance the load of rendezvous nodes. EETP aims to reduce the delay in data delivery and prolong the network lifetime. To shorten the trajectory length of the mobile sink, we design a mechanism to select potential visiting points within communication overlapping ranges of sensor nodes, rather than locations of sensor nodes. Additionally, according to trajectory characteristics of the mobile sink, we design an effective trajectory encoding method that can generate a trajectory containing an unfixed number of visiting points. The simulation results show that the proposed EETP is superior to existing WRP, CB and the MOPSO-based algorithm, in terms of delay in data delivery, network lifetime and energy consumption.
FSH, a glycoprotein hormone, and the FSH receptor (FSHR), a G protein-coupled receptor, play central roles in human reproduction. We report the crystal structure of FSH in complex with the entire ...extracellular domain of FSHR (FSHR ED), including the enigmatic hinge region that is responsible for signal specificity. Surprisingly, the hinge region does not form a separate structural unit as widely anticipated but is part of the integral structure of FSHR ED. In addition to the known hormone-binding site, FSHR ED provides interaction sites with the hormone: a sulfotyrosine (sTyr) site in the hinge region consistent with previous studies and a potential exosite resulting from putative receptor trimerization. Our structure, in comparison to others, suggests FSHR interacts with its ligand in two steps: ligand recruitment followed by sTyr recognition. FSH first binds to the high-affinity hormone-binding subdomain of FSHR and reshapes the ligand conformation to form a sTyr-binding pocket. FSHR then inserts its sTyr (i.e., sulfated Tyr335) into the FSH nascent pocket, eventually leading to receptor activation.
The present study surveyed actual extensive users of SAE Level 2 partially automated cars to investigate how driver’s characteristics (i.e., socio-demographics, driving experience, personality), ...system performance, perceived safety, and trust in partial automation influence use of partial automation. 81% of respondents stated that they use their automated car with speed (ACC) and steering assist (LKA) at least 1–2 times a week, and 84 and 92% activate LKA and ACC at least occasionally. Respondents positively rated the performance of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keeping Assistance (LKA). ACC was rated higher than LKA and detection of lead vehicles and lane markings was rated higher than smooth control for ACC and LKA, respectively. Respondents reported to primarily disengage (i.e., turn off) partial automation due to a lack of trust in the system and when driving is fun. They rarely disengaged the system when they noticed they become bored or sleepy. Structural equation modelling revealed that trust had a positive effect on driver’s propensity for secondary task engagement during partially automated driving, while the effect of perceived safety was not significant. Regarding driver’s characteristics, we did not find a significant effect of age on perceived safety and trust in partial automation. Neuroticism negatively correlated with perceived safety and trust, while extraversion did not impact perceived safety and trust. The remaining three personality dimensions ‘openness’, ‘conscientiousness’, and ‘agreeableness’ did not form valid and reliable scales in the confirmatory factor analysis, and could thus not be subjected to the structural equation modelling analysis. Future research should re-assess the suitability of the short 10-item scale as measure of the Big-Five personality traits, and investigate the impact on perceived safety, trust, use and use of automation.
R-spondins (RSPOs) enhance Wnt signaling, affect stem cell behavior, bind to leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein-coupled receptors 4-6, (LGR4-6) and the transmembrane E3 ubiquitin ligases RING ...finger 43/zinc and RING finger 3 (RNF43/ZNRF3). The structure of RSPO1 bound to both LGR5 and RNF43 ectodomains confirms their physical linkage. RSPO1 is sandwiched by LGR5 and RNF43, with its rod module of the cysteine-rich domain (CRD) contacting LGR5 and a hairpin inserted into RNF43. LGR5 does not contact RNF43 but increases the affinity of RSPO1 to RNF43, supporting LGR5 as an engagement receptor and RNF43 as an effector receptor. Disease mutations map to the RSPO1-RNF43 interface, which promises therapeutic targeting.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a large family of endogenous, non-coding RNAs, about 22 nucleotides long, which regulate gene expression through sequence-specific base pairing with target mRNAs. Extensive ...studies have shown that miRNA expression in the skin changes remarkably during distinct stages of the hair cycle in humans, mice, goats and sheep.
In this study, the skin tissues were harvested from the three stages of hair follicle cycling (anagen, catagen and telogen) in a fibre-producing goat breed. In total, 63,109,004 raw reads were obtained by Solexa sequencing and 61,125,752 clean reads remained for the small RNA digitalisation analysis. This resulted in the identification of 399 conserved miRNAs; among these, 326 miRNAs were expressed in all three follicular cycling stages, whereas 3, 12 and 11 miRNAs were specifically expressed in anagen, catagen, and telogen, respectively. We also identified 172 potential novel miRNAs by Mireap, 36 miRNAs were expressed in all three cycling stages, whereas 23, 29 and 44 miRNAs were specifically expressed in anagen, catagen, and telogen, respectively. The expression level of five arbitrarily selected miRNAs was analyzed by quantitative PCR, and the results indicated that the expression patterns were consistent with the Solexa sequencing results. Gene Ontology and KEGG pathway analyses indicated that five major biological pathways (Metabolic pathways, Pathways in cancer, MAPK signalling pathway, Endocytosis and Focal adhesion) accounted for 23.08% of target genes among 278 biological functions, indicating that these pathways are likely to play significant roles during hair cycling.
During all hair cycle stages of cashmere goats, a large number of conserved and novel miRNAs were identified through a high-throughput sequencing approach. This study enriches the Capra hircus miRNA databases and provides a comprehensive miRNA transcriptome profile in the skin of goats during the hair follicle cycle.

Interaural time difference and interaural level difference signals are insufficient in patients with single-sided deafness (SSD). This insufficiency leads to an absence of sound localization ...abilities and a decrease in speech intelligibility in noisy environments. SSD occurring in children further affects their language learning and cognitive abilities and their academic performance because they lack spatial abilities and binaural hearing. The early stages of central auditory system development are critical for auditory function development and morphological refinement. SSD occurring in the critical period can cause significant lateralization in the bilateral auditory pathway. This may increase the risk that affected individuals cannot re-establish binaural benefits after rehabilitation of hearing loss in the post-sensitive period. For otorhinolaryngologists, there is the concern that children with congenital SSD cannot benefit from cochlear implantation. Only a few studies have investigated auditory rehabilitation in children with congenital SSD with cochlear implantation and their results were inconsistent. The present review aims to clarify the main problems and challenges of clinical rehabilitation of congenital SSD, particularly focusing on the effect of CI on sound localization ability in children with congenital SSD.
Hematite is recognized as an excellent photocatalyst for photoelectrochemical photoanodes for water oxidation because of its favorable band gap, excellent anti-photocorrosion and structural stability ...in alkaline solution. However, slow charge transport and fast carrier recombination in the bulk and at the hematite photoanode/electrolyte interface, have limited its applications for water splitting. Herein, we report a highly efficient hematite/ferrhydrite (Fh) core-shell photoanode system, consisting of hematite (α-Fe2O3) semiconductor nanorods which dramatically enhance light harvesting, and ferrhydrite as the hole-storage shell. Our integrated hematite/ferrhydrite core-shell photoanode shows 2.7 times increased photo-current density under simulated sun light irradiation.
Castor (Ricinus communis L.) is an important seed oil crop. Castor oil is a highly demanded oil for several industrial uses. Current castor bean varieties suffer from low productivity and high risk ...of insect pests and diseases. High productive and pest/disease resistance varieties are needed. Lignin has been associated to the resistance for pest, disease and lodging. Lignin is produced from several metabolites of the phenylpropanoid pathway. PAL is the key enzyme of the phenylpropanoid pathway. The gene PAL may assist in the improvement of resistance of castor bean.
The RcPAL CDs was amplified and its function was examined by transgenic overexpression and antisense expression, lignin histochemical staining, real-time PCR, lignin content measurement and morphological investigation. Its full length was 2145 bp, encoding 714 amino acids. The overexpression of RcPAL (7.2 times) increased significantly the PAL activity, dyeing depth of xylem cells and lignin content (14.44%), resulting in a significantly lower plant height, deeper and thicker blade, more green leaves, shorter internode, thicker stem diameter, and opposite in antisense expression plants (lignin content lowered by 27.1%), demonstrated that the gene RcPAL was a key gene in castor lignin biosynthesis.
The gene RcPAL is a key gene in castor lignin biosynthesis and can be induced to express under mechanical damage stress. When up-regulated, it increased the lignin content significantly and dwarfed the plant height, and opposite when down-regulated. The gene RcPAL may assist in the improvement of resistance and plant type of castor bean.
