With rapid advances in high-speed communication and computation, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are emerging as next-generation display platforms for deeper human-digital ...interactions. Nonetheless, to simultaneously match the exceptional performance of human vision and keep the near-eye display module compact and lightweight imposes unprecedented challenges on optical engineering. Fortunately, recent progress in holographic optical elements (HOEs) and lithography-enabled devices provide innovative ways to tackle these obstacles in AR and VR that are otherwise difficult with traditional optics. In this review, we begin with introducing the basic structures of AR and VR headsets, and then describing the operation principles of various HOEs and lithography-enabled devices. Their properties are analyzed in detail, including strong selectivity on wavelength and incident angle, and multiplexing ability of volume HOEs, polarization dependency and active switching of liquid crystal HOEs, device fabrication, and properties of micro-LEDs (light-emitting diodes), and large design freedoms of metasurfaces. Afterwards, we discuss how these devices help enhance the AR and VR performance, with detailed description and analysis of some state-of-the-art architectures. Finally, we cast a perspective on potential developments and research directions of these photonic devices for future AR and VR displays.
Abstract
Non-mechanical beam steerers with lightweight, compact, high-efficiency, high-precision, and/or large-angle are pivotal for light detection and ranging (LiDAR) of autonomous vehicles, ...eye-tracking for near-eye displays, microscopy, optical tweezers, and high-precision three-dimensional (3D) printing. However, even the most matured optical phased array can only provide quasi-continuous, efficient beam steering within a small angle range. A telescope module with an angle magnification function can be coupled to enlarge the steering range or precision. But obtaining a compact, low-cost, lightweight, high-quality telescope module with conventional optics remains challenging. Patterned liquid crystal-based planar optical elements offer great design freedom for manipulating the phase profile of light in 2D space. Owing to the advantages of high efficiency, thinness, low cost, easy processing, flexibility, and response to environmental stimuli, a plethora of high-quality optical devices have been demonstrated. Here, a miniature planar telescope mediated by liquid crystal polymers is proposed to offer angle magnification independent of incident spatial location. It consists of two cascaded liquid crystal planar optical elements, each performing a predefined mathematical transformation. By this concept, planar optical elements are fabricated using a new exposure method and assembled into planar telescopes with different magnification factors. Within the incident field range, over 84.6% optical efficiency is achieved with small wavefront distortion. Such a miniature planar telescope shows the potential of cascaded liquid crystal planar optical elements for realizing functionalities that cannot be fulfilled by single optical elements, and enables lightweight, low loss, passive optical transmitters for widespread applications.
As one of the most promising candidates for next-generation mobile platform, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have potential to revolutionize the ways we perceive and interact with ...various digital information. In the meantime, recent advances in display and optical technologies, together with the rapidly developing digital processers, offer new development directions to advancing the near-eye display systems further. In this perspective paper, we start by analyzing the optical requirements in near-eye displays poised by the human visual system and then compare it against the specifications of state-of-the-art devices, which reasonably shows the main challenges in near-eye displays at the present stage. Afterward, potential solutions to address these challenges in both AR and VR displays are presented case by case, including the most recent optical research and development, which are already or have the potential to be industrialized for extended reality displays.

A multi-focal plane see-through near-eye display using a transparent projection display is demonstrated. The key component of the transparent projection display is a passive polymer-dispersed liquid ...crystal (PDLC), which is highly transparent for a large range of incident angles in air but strongly scattering at large oblique angles in high refractive index medium (e.g. glass). The use of a passive device can avoid temporal multiplexing. Such a display is highly transparent in air and can easily deliver full-color images. The proposed method is an important step toward transparent display-enabled multi-focal plane displays.
Continuous, wide field-of-view, high-efficiency, and fast-response beam steering devices are desirable in a plethora of applications. Liquid crystals (LCs)—soft, bi-refringent, and self-assembled ...materials which respond to various external stimuli—are especially promising for fulfilling these demands. In this paper, we review recent advances in LC beam steering devices. We first describe the general operation principles of LC beam steering techniques. Next, we delve into different kinds of beam steering devices, compare their pros and cons, and propose a new LC-cladding waveguide beam steerer using resistive electrodes and present our simulation results. Finally, two future development challenges are addressed: Fast response time for mid-wave infrared (MWIR) beam steering, and device hybridization for large-angle, high-efficiency, and continuous beam steering. To achieve fast response times for MWIR beam steering using a transmission-type optical phased array, we develop a low-loss polymer-network liquid crystal and characterize its electro-optical properties.
Abstract
With the increase in the proportion of new energy power generation in grids, there is an urgent need for the flexible operation of coal‐fired power plants. However, as the most efficient ...commercial coal‐fired power generation technology, the flexibility of double‐reheat ultra‐supercritical units is limited due to the steam temperature fluctuation in transient processes. To inhibit the steam temperature fluctuations, a data‐driven method, called long short‐term memory (LSTM) was introduced to model the dynamics of the steam temperatures of a 1000‐MW double‐reheat coal‐fired boiler. Moreover, an advanced controller was proposed by combining the LSTM‐based dynamic model and the model predictive control architecture. The results demonstrate that the LSTM model can be used to capture the time delay, multivariable coupling and non‐linear dynamics of the steam temperatures and the proposed controller exhibits excellent performance in steam temperature regulation. The superheated steam temperature fluctuation decreases from 15.4 to 9.8°C, the primary reheat temperature fluctuation decreases from 34.6 to 8.3°C, and the secondary reheat temperature fluctuation decreases from 41.4 to 8.8°C. The proposed method has good potential to stabilize steam temperatures during transient processes of wide‐range load cycling, and finally improves the flexibility of the double‐reheat ultra‐supercritical unit.
Recent advances in perovskite nanocrystals-enhanced solid-state lighting (SSL) and liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) are reviewed. We first discuss the development, optical properties, and stability ...issue of materials, and then we evaluate the performance of SSL and LCDs with perovskite downconverters adopted. In SSL performance evaluation, we investigate the fitting-curve effect in calculations and optimizations where simple Gaussian fitting and precise fitting are compared in detail, and we further optimize for highly efficient, good color-rendering, and human-healthy SSL sources. For LCD performance evaluation, we study the intrinsic tradeoffs between total light efficiency and color gamut coverage. Through optimizations using real line shapes, Rec. 2020 standard coverage as large as 92.8% can be achieved through hybrid integration. Finally, we briefly discuss two future challenges: materials development and device integration. We believe the emerging perovskite nanocrystals are highly promising for next-generation SSL and LCDs.
Liquid crystal-based reflective polarization volume grating (PVG), also known as a linear Bragg–Berry phase optical element or a member of volume Bragg gratings (VBGs), is a functional planar ...structure with patterned orientation of optical axis. Due to the strong polarization selectivity, nearly 100% diffraction efficiency, large diffraction angle, and simple fabrication process, PVGs have found potential applications in novel photonic devices and emerging near-eye displays. In this review paper, we describe the operation principles, discuss the optical properties, present the fabrication methods, and provide promising applications of PVGs for near-eye displays and novel photonic devices.
The cytogenetic abnormalities and molecular mutations involved in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) lead to unique treatment challenges. Although adoptive T-cell therapies (ACT) such as chimeric antigen ...receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy have shown promising results in the treatment of leukemias, especially B-cell malignancies, the optimal target surface antigen has yet to be discovered for AML. Alternatively, T-cell receptor (TCR)-redirected T cells can target intracellular antigens presented by HLA molecules, allowing the exploration of a broader territory of new therapeutic targets. Immunotherapy using adoptive transfer of WT1 antigen-specific TCR-T cells, for example, has had positive clinical successes in patients with AML. Nevertheless, AML can escape from immune system elimination by producing immunosuppressive factors or releasing several cytokines. This review presents recent advances of antigen-specific TCR-T cells in treating AML and discusses their challenges and future directions in clinical applications.
Liquid-crystal (LC)-based ultrathin flat optical elements (FOEs) exhibit several attractive properties, such as a high degree of optical tunability, strong polarization selectivity, nearly 100% ...diffraction efficiency, and a simple fabrication process. Investigating the alignment patterning of LC-FOEs to diversify their performance has attracted broad interest in the optics field. In this mini-review, we start from the photoalignment (PA) process and then dive into device structures and performances. By generating and recording the desired polarization fields on the PA layer, the LC molecules will follow the recorded patterns and establish the phase profiles for different functionalities, such as gratings and lenses. Because of the polarization dependency, LC-FOEs have found useful applications in near-eye displays. Understanding the interactions between the PA mechanism and LC molecules helps to optimize the device performance for novel optical systems.
