This study focuses on the effects that business models have on advisor managed portfolio per- formance by attempting to determine if advisors at Registered Investment Advisory (RIA) firms pro- duce ...higher net investment results compared with advisors employed at dually registered Independent Broker/Dealer (IBD) firms. Using data from one of the largest investment advisory plat- forms in the United States, we found qualified supporting evidence that advisors at RIAs outper- formed advisors at IBDs in higher-risk portfolios through the use of Turnkey Asset Management Programs and Unified Managed Accounts.
This paper demonstrates automatic recognition of vocalizations of four common bird species (herring gull Larus argentatus, blue jay Cyanocitta cristata, Canada goose Branta canadensis, and American ...crow Corvus brachyrhynchos) using an algorithm that extracts frequency track sets using track properties of importance and harmonic correlation. The main result is that a complex harmonic vocalization is rendered into a set of related tracks that is easily applied to statistical models of the actual bird vocalizations. For each vocalization type, a statistical model of the vocalization was created by transforming the training set frequency tracks into feature vectors. The extraction algorithm extracts sets of frequency tracks from test recordings that closely approximate harmonic sounds in the file being processed. Each extracted set in its final form is then compared with the statistical models generated during the training phase using Mahalanobis distance functions. If it matches one of the models closely, the recognizer declares the set an occurrence of the corresponding vocalization. The method was evaluated against a test set containing vocalizations of both the 4 target species and 16 additional species as well as background noise containing planes, cars, and various natural sounds.
Following a series of recent innovations, isogeometric shell analysis based on trimmed CAD surfaces is currently being developed into an accurate, efficient and mature design-through-analysis ...methodology. This work contributes to this emerging technology with respect to the following aspects. On the analysis side, we present a robust variationally consistent Nitsche-type formulation for thin shells at large deformations that weakly enforces coupling constraints at trimming curves. On the geometry side, we present a set of algorithms that enable automatic interaction of trimmed shell analysis with CAD data structures based on the STEP exchange format. We integrate these methodologies in a comprehensive framework for isogeometric trimmed shell analysis. We demonstrate that our framework is able to seamlessly perform large-deformation stress analysis of an industry-scale 76-patch surface model of a Dodge RAM hood, while delivering comparable accuracy with respect to Simulia’s commercial software package Abaqus.

The theory of operation is presented, together with experimental results, of a projectile target scoring system that determines highly accurate hit locations of small arms fire by processing constant ...frequency CW radar Doppler phase content into a trajectory estimate. We describe a new algorithm for extracting trajectory parameters from Doppler time series to obtain time, distance, and velocity at closest approach. Vector trajectories are derived by combining multiple scalar trajectories from three radar units. Live fire test results from a local range and Aberdeen Proving Ground are provided to show that a hit location accuracy of 4 cm can be achieved reliably on small arms.
This dissertation analyzes the vocalizations of several common bird species: herring gull, bluejay, American crow, and Canada goose. It qualitatively analyzes the spectrograms of vocalizations of ...these species and then quantitatively analyzes the vocalizations using frequency track analysis. A frequency track is the path travelled by a peak in the DFT spectrum of a segment of a sound file as the segment is shifted forward in time. There are two parts to any pattern recognition system: (1) producing statistical models for each pattern to be recognized; and (2) using the models to find the patterns in real test data. The training procedure for this research requires hand selection of the frequency tracks corresponding to each training vocalization in the training data set using the frequency track analysis capabilities of Gtkvis. Following the formation of the frequency track files for each vocalization instance, a statistical model of the vocalization is created using the MakeModel() function. The recognition algorithm extracts sets of frequency tracks that closely approximate harmonic sounds in the sound file being processed. The set extraction function GetSets() uses a preliminary set extracting function called FindFeasibleSets() followed by a function that refines the "feasible sets" called FindMaximalSubsets(). Each extracted set in its final form is then compared with the statistical models generated during the training phase. If it matches one of the models closely, the recognizer declares the set is an occurrence of the corresponding vocalization. The final result is a hardware and software implementation of a complete sound recognition system based on a methodology easily adapted to a wide class of vocalizations. One set of hardware consists of a handheld digital recorder, microphone, and pre-amp. The other set of hardware (in development) consists of an array of microphones coupled to a steerable parabolic dish microphone. The software consists of a sound visualization and processing application called Gtkvis and some command line tools for training and recognition that could easily be integrated into the Gtkvis GUI.
