We present Spitzer Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) spectral energy distribution (SED) and Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations of 14 Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) previously identified ...in the GLIMPSE survey. We find evidence for SNR/molecular cloud interaction through detection of O I emission, ionic lines, and emission from molecular hydrogen. Through blackbody fitting of the MIPS SEDs we find the large grains to be warm, 29-66 K. The dust emission is modeled using the DUSTEM code and a three-component dust model composed of populations of big grains (BGs), very small grains (VSGs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. We find the dust to be moderately heated, typically by 30-100 times the interstellar radiation field. The source of the radiation is likely hydrogen recombination, where the excitation of hydrogen occurred in the shock front. The ratio of VSGs to BGs is found for most of the molecular interacting SNRs to be higher than that found in the plane of the Milky Way, typically by a factor of 2-3. We suggest that dust shattering is responsible for the relative overabundance of small grains, in agreement with the prediction from dust destruction models. However, two of the SNRs are best fitted with a very low abundance of carbon grains to silicate grains and with a very high radiation field. A likely reason for the low abundance of small carbon grains is sputtering. We find evidence for silicate emission at 20 Delta *mm in their SEDs, indicating that they are young SNRs based on the strong radiation field necessary to reproduce the observed SEDs.
We present the analysis of Fermi Large Area Telescope gamma -ray observations of HB 21 (G89.0+4.7). We detect significant gamma -ray emission associated with the remnant; the flux > 100 MeV is 9.4 + ...or - 0.8 (stat) + or - 1.6 (syst) x 10 super(-11) erg cm super(-2) s super(-1). HB 21 is well modeled by a uniform disk centered at l = 88degrees.75 + or - 0degrees.04, b = +4degrees.65 + or - 0degrees.06 with a radius of 1degrees.19 + or - 0degrees.06. The gamma -ray spectrum shows clear evidence of curvature, suggesting a cutoff or break in the underlying particle population at an energy of a few GeV. We complement gamma -ray observations with the analysis of the WMAP 7 yr data from 23 to 93 GHz, achieving the first detection of HB 21 at these frequencies. In combination with archival radio data, the radio spectrum shows a special break, which helps to constrain the relativistic electron spectrum, and, in turn, parameters of simple non-thermal radiation models. In one-zone models multi wavelength data favor the origin of gamma rays from nucleon-nucleon collisions. A single population of electrons cannot produce both gamma rays through bremsstrahlung and radio emission through synchrotron radiation. A predominantly inverse-Compton origin of the gamma -ray emission is disfavored because it requires lower interstellar densities than are inferred for HB 21. In the hadronic-dominated scenarios, accelerated nuclei contribute a total energy of ~3 x 10 super(49) erg, while, in a two-zone bremsstrahlung-dominated scenario, the total energy in accelerated particles is ~1 x 10 super(49) erg.
Measurement of gene-expression profiles using microarray technology is becoming increasingly popular among the biomedical research community. Although there has been great progress in this field, ...investigators are still confronted with a difficult question after completing their experiments: how to validate the large data sets that are generated? This review summarizes current approaches to verifying global expression results, discusses the caveats that must be considered, and describes some methods that are being developed to address outstanding problems.
ABSTRACT We report the discovery of extended gamma-ray emission measured by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope in the region of the supernova remnant (SNR) HB ...3 (G132.7+1.3) and the W3 II complex adjacent to the southeast of the remnant. W3 is spatially associated with bright 12CO (J = 1-0) emission. The gamma-ray emission is spatially correlated with this gas and the SNR. We discuss the possibility that gamma rays originate in interactions between particles accelerated in the SNR and interstellar gas or radiation fields. The decay of neutral pions produced in nucleon-nucleon interactions between accelerated hadrons and interstellar gas provides a reasonable explanation for the gamma-ray emission. The emission from W3 is consistent with irradiation of the CO clouds by the cosmic rays accelerated in HB 3.
The potential discharge of groundwater contaminated by oil sands process‐affected water (OSPW) is a concern for aquatic ecosystems near tailings ponds. Groundwater in the area, but unaffected by ...OSPW, may contain similar compounds, complicating the assessment of potential ecological impacts. In this study, 177 shallow groundwater samples were collected from riparian areas along the Athabasca River and tributaries proximate to oil sands developments. For “pond‐site” samples (71; adjacent to study tailings pond), Canadian aquatic life guidelines were exceeded for 11 of 20 assessed compounds. However, “non‐pond” samples (54; not near any tailings pond) provided similar exceedances. Statistical analyses indicate that pond‐site and non‐pond samples were indistinguishable for all but seven parameters assessed, including salts, many trace metals, and fluorescence profiles of aromatic naphthenic acids (ANA). This suggests that, regarding the tested parameters, groundwater adjacent to the study tailings pond generally poses no greater ecological risk than other nearby groundwaters at this time. Multivariate analyses applied to the groundwater data set separated into 11 smaller zones support this conclusion, but show some variation between zones. Geological and potential OSPW influences could not be distinguished based on major ions and metals concentrations. However, similarities in indicator parameters, namely ANA, F, Mo, Se, and Na‐Cl ratio, were noted between a small subset of samples from two pond‐site zones and two OSPW samples and two shallow groundwater samples documented as likely OSPW affected. This indicator‐based screening suggests that OSPW‐affected groundwater may be reaching Athabasca River sediments at a few locations.

ABSTRACT We present an analysis of the gamma-ray measurements by the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope in the region of the supernova remnant (SNR) Monoceros Loop ...(G205.5+0.5). The brightest gamma-ray peak is spatially correlated with the Rosette Nebula, which is a molecular cloud complex adjacent to the southeast edge of the SNR. After subtraction of this emission by spatial modeling, the gamma-ray emission from the SNR emerges, which is extended and fit by a Gaussian spatial template. The gamma-ray spectra are significantly better reproduced by a curved shape than a simple power law. The luminosities between 0.2 and 300 GeV are erg s−1 for the SNR and erg s−1 for the Rosette Nebula, respectively. We argue that the gamma-rays likely originate from the interactions of particles accelerated in the SNR. The decay of neutral pions produced in nucleon-nucleon interactions of accelerated hadrons with interstellar gas provides a reasonable explanation for the gamma-ray emission of both the Rosette Nebula and the Monoceros SNR.
The REgents PARk and Tower Environmental Experiment (REPARTEE) comprised two campaigns in London in October 2006 and October/November 2007. The experiment design involved measurements at a heavily ...trafficked roadside site, two urban background sites and an elevated site at 160-190 m above ground on the BT Tower, supplemented in the second campaign by Doppler lidar measurements of atmospheric vertical structure. A wide range of measurements of airborne particle physical metrics and chemical composition were made as well as measurements of a considerable range of gas phase species and the fluxes of both particulate and gas phase substances. Significant findings include (a) demonstration of the evaporation of traffic-generated nanoparticles during both horizontal and vertical atmospheric transport; (b) generation of a large base of information on the fluxes of nanoparticles, accumulation mode particles and specific chemical components of the aerosol and a range of gas phase species, as well as the elucidation of key processes and comparison with emissions inventories; (c) quantification of vertical gradients in selected aerosol and trace gas species which has demonstrated the important role of regional transport in influencing concentrations of sulphate, nitrate and secondary organic compounds within the atmosphere of London; (d) generation of new data on the atmospheric structure and turbulence above London, including the estimation of mixed layer depths; (e) provision of new data on trace gas dispersion in the urban atmosphere through the release of purposeful tracers; (f) the determination of spatial differences in aerosol particle size distributions and their interpretation in terms of sources and physico-chemical transformations; (g) studies of the nocturnal oxidation of nitrogen oxides and of the diurnal behaviour of nitrate aerosol in the urban atmosphere, and (h) new information on the chemical composition and source apportionment of particulate matter size fractions in the atmosphere of London derived both from bulk chemical analysis and aerosol mass spectrometry with two instrument types.
Microbial keratitis is a severe, sight-threatening condition caused by various pathogens. Eyedrops are the standard delivery modality for treating these disorders; however, blinking reflex, elevated ...tear production, and nasolacrimal drainage eliminate much of the instilled dose within a few seconds. Therefore, eyedrops must be applied repeatedly for prolonged periods. The present study aimed to probe more effective ocular delivery of chlorhexidine based upon drug-loaded hydrogel contact lenses and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), while also determining the effect of constant irrigation with simulated tear fluid (STF) in in vitro experiments. Chlorhexidine digluconate (as 0.2 and 2% solutions, β-CD inclusion complexes, and loaded hydrogel contact lenses) were applied to enucleated porcine eyes as single or multiple 10 μL doses, or as drug-loaded contact lenses, with and without β-CD. The corneas were then excised and drug-extracted quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The effect of constant irrigation by STF was evaluated to test the effect of increased tear production on corneal delivery. Potential antimicrobial activity of the delivered drug was also assessed. Results showed that drug-loaded contact lenses delivered the greatest amount of chlorhexidine into the cornea over a 24 h period, while the eyedrop solution comparator delivered the least. The β-CD significantly enhanced chlorhexidine delivery to the cornea from eyedrop solution, although contact lenses loaded with chlorhexidine−β-CD failed to enhance delivery. β-CD within the hydrogel matrix impeded drug release. Constant irrigation with STF significantly reduced the amount of drug delivered to the cornea in all cases. Chlorhexidine retained antimicrobial activity in all delivery methods. Hydrogel contact lenses loaded with chlorhexidine delivered significantly higher levels to the cornea compared to eyedrops, either multiple hourly doses or a single dose. They also offer reduced application, in particular, to a nonulcerated corneal infection. Finally, the importance of fully accounting for tear production in in vitro ocular delivery experiments was highlighted.

We present the first Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) solar flare catalog covering the 24th solar cycle. This catalog contains 45 Fermi-LAT solar flares (FLSFs) with emission in the γ-ray energy band ...(30 MeV-10 GeV) detected with a significance of ≥5 over the years 2010-2018. A subsample containing 37 of these flares exhibits delayed emission beyond the prompt-impulsive hard X-ray phase, with 21 flares showing delayed emission lasting more than two hours. No prompt-impulsive emission is detected in four of these flares. We also present in this catalog observations of GeV emission from three flares originating from active regions located behind the limb of the visible solar disk. We report the lightcurves, spectra, best proton index, and localization (when possible) for all FLSFs. The γ-ray spectra are consistent with the decay of pions produced by >300 MeV protons. This work contains the largest sample of high-energy γ-ray flares ever reported and provides a unique opportunity to perform population studies on the different phases of the flare and thus allowing a new window in solar physics to be opened.
