Autonomic nervous dysfunction and peripheral neuropathy are often found in both diabetics and alcoholics. In the present study, we have attempted to assess whether and how autonomic nervous function ...is impaired in diabetes complicated by alcoholism (DM·AL). To that effect, the coefficient of variation of R-R intervals (CVRR) was evaluated in these patients (n=68) on the 30th day of abstinence. Decreased CVRR (CVRR<2.0) was more frequently found in DM·AL (49%) than in non-alcholic diabetics (DM, n=50, 22%, p<0.01) or non-diabetic alcoholics (AL, n=22, 9%, p< 0.01). Diminished vibration sence was more frequently found in DM·AL (47%) than in either DM (24%, p<0.05) or AL (9 %, p<0.01). In patients whose diabetic history was shorter than 3 years, autonomic nervous dysfunction and peripheral neuropathy were more frequently observed in DM·AL than in DM (CVRR<2.0: 48 % vs 9%, p< 0.01. Diminished vibration sense: 43% vs 14%, p< 0.05), while the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy did not differ between these two groups. Central nervous system damage, e. g. brain atrophy or dementia, was also associated with low CVRR in alcoholic diabetics. These data suggest that preexisting autonomic nervous dysfunction and peripheral neuropathy due to alcoholism are exacerbated by the concomitant presence of diabetes.
Mixture of Ti and Mo powders was mechanically alloyed to obtain β-type Ti-20mass-%Mo alloy. The mechanism of mechanical alloying(MA) of Ti-20mass%Mo and microstructure of its product were ...investigated by X-ray diffraction, XAFS and TEM. X-ray diffraction profile showed that complete alloying was attained by the 36ks-MA, but incompleteness was revealed by the analysis of XAFS. According to the result of XAFS, 144ks-MA was needed to accomplish alloying. The radial structural parameters of j-th shell, R j , N j and σ j are obtained by curve fitting method on a two-shell, double Mo-Mo and Mo-Ti pairs. Nearest neighbor bond length(R j ) decreased with the time of MA. From the observation of TEM, it was revealed that mechanically alloyed particle was composed of small domains with different lattice images in direction, like subgrains. Deformation of the lattice image was also recognized for the MA specimen.
We treated the majority of displacements and dislocations of mandibular condyle fragments surgically and other cases with conservative treatment for years. Inauires were made of case records of 123 ...patients with a diagnosis of fractures of condylar process in our ward in the 15-year-period 1971 through 1985 to observe results. Sixty-six of 123 patients responded to the questionnaire. They were composed of 36 patients with surgical treatment and 30 with conservative treatment. After analyses, we obtained the following results. 1. In functional views of the temporomandibular joint, prognoses of displacements and dislocations of condylar fragments were just as good as those of no displacements and deviations when they are treated surgically. 2. Prognoses of surgical treatments of condylar fractures were not influenced by patient age, situation and the location of fracture of condylar process and period from trauma to treatment. 3. The surgical treatments resulted in four cases of paresthesias in the cheek and two cases of paralyses at a part of facial nerve. 4. We usually chose preauricular or submandibular approaches and the scars following incisions did not cosmetically please 27.8 per cent of the patients. From the above, we assume that indications for surgical treatment of condylar fractures of the mandible are for elderly patients with displacements and adults with dislocation of fragment, bilateral displacements, lateral displacement or displacement which have lasted more than two weeks after trauma.
Tensile property of cast Ti-fiber-reinforced Mg composite was tested and swaging effect of cast Mg covered with Al or Ti plate was examined. Strong interfacial bonding between Ti and Mg was confirmed ...by the pull-out test and excellent wettability was observed by the scanning electron microscope. Tensile strength of the cast Ti-fiber-reinforced Mg increased with increasing volume fraction of the fiber from 1 to 14%, while the increase of elongation was restricted within 10% of the volume fraction. Interfacial condition between Al and Mg was rather good after the swaging for the three-layer clad prepared free from intermetallic compound. Contact situation of the cast Mg to the Ti cover was once lowered by swaging but became improved by further swaging.
Although chemotherapy has made remarkable progress in the treatment of the infections in the oral and maxillo-facial region, some cases of difficult treatment are occasionally encountered. Recently, ...a male patient aged 36 with osteomyelitis of the mandible was given surgical therapy and antibiotics in large quanty. Bacteriologic examinations showed that pseudomonas aeruginosa and pseudomonas cepacia to be the cause. The patient was successfully treated with sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. These organisms are encapsulated in glucose-non-fermentative gram-negative rods. The infections caused by these organisms have been increasing clinically. The treatment of osteomyelitis caused by these organisms may be more difficult because of the toxicity and side effects of the antibiotics that must be employed. Because of the rarity of reported cases of glucose-non-fermentative gram-negative rods infections of the mandible, it seems to be appropriate to report our experience.
A conception of "Dysproteinamische Myo-kardose" was first brought out by F. WUHR-MANN in 1950. After that, T. NANGU studied statistically the relation between electrocardiographic abnormalities and ...those of serum protein in various hepatic diseases, and made it clear. On the other hand, it is well known that generally speaking the variations of serum electrolytes are also important for the electrocardiographic changes, and many literatures concerning this problem have been listed. But the systematic study particularly pointed toward the relation between serum electrolytes and the electrocardiographic findings in hepatic diseases has scarcely been found. Therefore, the authors intended to make clear this problem, comparing influences of the dyselectrolytemia with those of the dysproteinemia upon electrocardiographic changes in hepatic diseases especially in hepatic cirrhosis. MATERIALS AND METHOD Twenty four cases of acute hepatitis, nine-teen cases of chronic hepatitis and fourty two cases of cirrhosis of the liver were included in the whole 85 materials without a history of the circulatory diseases. Measurements of the serum sodium and potassium were performed on the same day with the electrocardiography.
The new antibacterial agent, AC-1370, was studied clinically. The results were as follows: 1) AC-1370 was administered by intravenous one shot or drip infusion to 30 patients with infection in the ...field of surgery, such as 7 cases of peritonitis, 5 cases of postoperative wound infection, 3 cases of phlegmon, 3 cases of abscess, 2 cases of carbuncle, 2 cases of periproctal abscess, 2 cases of subphrenic abscess and 6 cases of other infections. The results obtained were excellent in 5, good in 12, fair in 6, poor in 5 and unknown in 2 cases, then total efficacy rate was 61%. 2) Side effects were noted in two cases. One was drug eruption and the other was anaphylactic shock. Drug administration was stopped when these side effects were appeared. These cases did not become to severe diseases. These patients become good when drug was stopped. 3) There were no liver disturbance nor renal disturbance.
