The present study showed the beneficial effect of the exercise program aimed at improving flexibility, body balance, muscle power, and walking ability in preventing falls in the elderly. Introduction The present study was conducted to determine the effect of exercise on the prevention of falls in the elderly. Methods Sixty-eight elderly ambulatory volunteers were randomly divided into two groups: the exercise and control groups. The daily exercise, which consisted of calisthenics, body balance training (tandem standing, tandem gait, and unipedal standing), muscle power training (chair-rising training), and walking ability training (stepping), were performed 3 days/week only in the exercise group. No exercise was performed in the control group. Results After the 5-month exercise program, the indices of the flexibility, body balance, muscle power, and walking ability significantly improved in the exercise group compared with the control group. The incidence of falls was significantly lower in the exercise group than in the control group (0.0% vs. 12.1%, P = 0.0363). The exercise program was safe and well tolerated in the elderly. Conclusions The present study showed the beneficial effect of the exercise program aimed at improving flexibility, body balance, muscle power, and walking ability in preventing falls in the elderly.
In 1997 February, the Japanese radio astronomy satellite HALCA was launched to provide the space-bourne element for the VLBI Space Observatory Program (VSOP) mission. Approximately 25% of the mission ...time was dedicated to the VSOP survey of bright compact active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at 5 GHz. This paper, the fifth in the series, presents images and models for the remaining 140 sources not Included in the third paper in the series, which contained 102 sources. For most sources, the plots of the (u, v) coverage, the visibility amplitude versus (u, v) distance, and the high-resolution image are presented. Model fit parameters to the major radio components are determined, and the brightness temperature of the core component for each source is calculated. The brightness temperature distributions for all of the sources in the VSOP AGN survey are discussed.
Long term survival for the cases of trisomy 13 into over a first decade is very rare. We reported here the case of a 14-year-old male karyotype with full type of trisomy 13. In this clinical ...phenomenon, the case had typical facial, finger and limb anomalies for trisomy 13. Arterial septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus were recognized using ultrasonography after birth. Major cerebral malformation such as holoprosencephaly or cerebellar hypoplasia were also not revealed. After 5 months of his age, artificial ventilation therapy for dyspnea associated with laryngomalacia was required. A tracheotomy was performed at 6 months of his age. After 12 years old, intractable partial epilepsy was recognized. For his partial seizures, a treatment with a combination of two anti-epileptic drugs, valproic acid and levetiracetam, were advised. Now he is alive for 14-years-old and he is the 4th longest surviving patient with full karyotype of trisomy 13.
We present measurements of the linear diameter of the emission region of the Vela pulsar at observing wavelength lambda = 18 cm. We infer the diameter as a function of pulse phase from the ...distribution of visibility on the Mopra-Tidbinbilla baseline. As we demonstrate, in the presence of strong scintillation, finite size of the emission region produces a characteristic W-shaped signature in the projection of the visibility distribution onto the real axis. This modification involves heightened probability density near the mean amplitude, decreased probability to either side, and a return to the zero-size distribution beyond. We observe this signature with high statistical significance, as compared with the best-fitting zero-size model, in many regions of pulse phase. We find that the equivalent FWHM of the pulsar's emission region decreases from more than 400 km early in the pulse to near zero at the peak of the pulse and then increases again to approximately 800 km near the trailing edge. We discuss possible systematic effects and compare our work with previous results.
Some cases of Coffin-Lowry syndrome recognized episodic drops and it tended to be intractable for medical treatment. We reported here a patient with the Coffin-Lowry syndrome associated with ...obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The patient had epileptic seizures and drop attacks only during night-time and it was not recognized during the daytime. His sleep-induced electroencephalogram was normal. At 12-years old of his age, his OSAS was worse, so we performed a tracheotomy. Notably after the operation, his epileptic episodes were disappeared.
We compare the noise in interferometric measurements of the Vela pulsar from ground- and space-based antennas with theoretical predictions. The noise depends on both the flux density and the ...interferometric phase of the source. Because the Vela pulsar is bright and scintillating, these comparisons extend into both the low and high signal-to-noise regimes. Furthermore, our diversity of baselines explores the full range of variation in interferometric phase. We find excellent agreement between theoretical expectations and our estimates of noise among samples within the characteristic scintillation scales. Namely, the noise is drawn from an elliptical Gaussian distribution in the complex plane, centered on the signal. The major axis, aligned with the signal phase, varies quadratically with the signal, while the minor axis, at quadrature, varies with the same linear coefficients. For weak signal, the noise approaches a circular Gaussian distribution. Both the variance and covariance of the noise are also affected by artifacts of digitization and correlation. In particular, we show that gating introduces correlations between nearby spectral channels.

A presumed terrorist attack with sarin occurred in a residential area of the city of Matsumoto, Japan, on June 27, 1994. About 600 residents and rescue staff were poisoned; 58 were admitted ...to hospitals, and 7 died. We examined clinical and laboratory findings of 264 people who sought treatment and the results of health examinations on 155 residents done 3 weeks after the poisoning. Findings for severely poisoned people were decreases in serum cholinesterase, acetylcholinesterase in erythrocytes, serum triglyceride, serum potassium and chloride; and increases in serum creatine kinase, leucocytes, and ketones in urine. Slight fever and epileptiform abnormalities on electroencephalogram were present for up to 30 days. Examination revealed no persisting abnormal physical findings in any individual. Acetylcholinesterase returned to normal within 3 months in all people examined. Although subclinical miosis and neuropathy were present 30 days after exposure, almost all symptoms of sarin exposure disappeared rapidly and left no sequelae in most people.
