Currently, eye surgery is the only viable solution to reserve blindness in cataract patients. Nonetheless, post-cataract surgery care plays an important role in the effectiveness of cataract surgery. ...To ensure the success of post-cataract surgery, healthcare providers must support patients with adequate knowledge regarding post-cataract surgery care. In this study, we investigate the effectiveness of audiovisual media in post-cataract surgery care education on improving patients’ knowledge. This quasi-experimental study is designed with one group pre-test and post-test approach. We recruited a total of 58 participants aged ≥40 years with senile cataract diagnosis who underwent cataract surgery by phacoemulsification in one eye using local anesthesia or neurolept, with visual acuity in the unoperated eye ≥0.08, and without hearing loss. Participants were given complementary post-surgery education through audiovisual media for 7 minutes and participants were instructed to fill out the questionnaire about post-cataract surgery care prior to and after getting the complementary audiovisual media education. The collected data were analyzed using the frequency distribution analysis and Wilcoxon test. The findings suggest that the application of audiovisual media in post-cataract surgery care education significantly increases patients’ knowledge (p-value<0.001). This study concludes that providing education through audiovisual media is recommended for post-cataract surgery patients.
People with dementia have impairment to execute daily life activities by presenting as a deterioration of mental processes, such as memory, thinking, reasoning, and judgment. Many participants in ...dementia research may lack the capacity to provide informed consent. Additional safeguards are needed for dementia research participants’ protection because of their vulnerability. Only after carefully weighing the risks and possible benefits for the participants in the research may it be decided to use vulnerable participants. The intention to prevent harm pushes against the removal of autonomy. This dilemma is the driving force behind this article's narrative review of the capacity to consent problems in dementia research. For this critical narrative review, we conducted a thorough search of Scopus, PubMed, and Wiley Open Library for literature addressing the ethical and legal issues on the capacity to consent of people with dementia. We outline the dilemmas and difficulties that surround them including the related ethical principles, the informed consent process, capacity to consent, and safeguards for the participant in research involving people with dementia.
Nowadays, implanted permanent pacemakers (PPM) users need to undergo periodic pacemaker replacement surgery. The surgery is needed since the pacemaker's battery is usually depleted in 5-10 years. ...This surgery, although poses relatively low health risks, is inconvenient for PPM users. Moreover, the surgery can still be dangerous for PPM users, especially considering that most of the users are elderly. PPM replacement surgery is also costly. In addition to the costs of the surgery itself, the PPM users need to bear the price of the new PPM every time they undergo surgery. Currently, when the PPM's battery runs out, the whole PPM needs to be replaced. This is conducted to prevent the possibility of a leak in the battery seal, which might allow the body fluids to enter the PPM. Typically, once a battery is inserted into the PPM, it will be permanently sealed along with all other electronic components, and thus, battery-only replacement is impossible. Thanks to the recent advancement of wireless power transfer (WPT) technology, a PPM replacement surgery might no longer be necessary in the near future. This article presents a brief review of the current state of coil-based WPT technology and its potential applications in pacemakers. Depending on the load and transmission distance, a recent WPT system for PPM could achieve WPT efficiency as high as 97.91% on air and 78% on pig tissue medium. In terms of output power, recent works that we have summarized showed that they are able to transmit power up to 5W on a WPT system implemented on a human phantom. We also discuss the challenges, limitations, and future prospects for WPT in the medical field, particularly for PPM applications.
Diabetic foot ulcers are a common complication that occurs in approximately 15 percent of patients with diabetes mellitus. Over 60% of diabetic foot ulcers are caused by underlying neuropathy. Former ...studies on diabetic animals with foot wounds found that vibration platforms significantly accelerate wound healing by catalyzing epithelization, promoting angiogenesis, and enhancing muscle bulk. This result suggests that there is evidence that vibrations may accelerate diabetic neuropathic ulcer healing in human patients. However, to the best of our knowledge, the effect of vibration on the enhancements of diabetic foot ulcer healing in human patients is rarely investigated. Hence, in this work, we conducted an experimental study with human subjects to investigate whether vibration therapy, as a complement to the standard wound treatment, can accelerate the wound healing rate of diabetic neuropathic foot ulcers. In this prospective experimental study, 80 participants diagnosed with Wagner grades I−III diabetic neuropathic foot ulcers were randomly distributed to experimental (n = 40) and control groups (n = 40). Patients in the intervention group received standard wound treatment and vibration wound therapy (VWT), whereas patients in the control group retrieved only standard wound treatment. The results (p = 0.024, α = 0.05) show notable differences in the median healing rate between the intervention group (25 days, 95% CI: 20.3−29.7) and control group (33 days, 95% CI: 25.6−40.4), with the effect-size r, Cohen’s d, Glass’s Δ, and Hedges’ g, respectively, being 0.810, 2.764, 2.311, and 2.772. Moreover, the nitric oxide (NO) level, wound closure area, and wound healing score after intervention significantly differed between the two groups (p < 0.05), putting the intervention group on a higher level than the control group. Furthermore, positive associations were found between the NO level and wound healing closure rates. These findings suggested that VWT enhances diabetic neuropathic foot ulcer healing in terms of healing rate, wound closure area, healing score, and elevated NO level. Considering that no clinically adverse effects were found in the patients induced with vibration intervention, VWT can be regarded as a complementary therapy to the existing ones to accelerate the healing of DFUs.
This research aims to determine the effect of financial literacy, financial behavior and self-control on student financial planning. This research is a quantitative study of 213 respondents using ...simple random sampling technique with the requirement that students have taken financial planning courses. Data analysis using SmartPLS with two model tests. The results obtained are that financial literacy, financial behavior and self-control have a positive and significant effect on financial planning partially. The findings also show that there is an indirect effect through self-control that financial literacy has a positive but not significant effect, but has a positive and significant effect on the relationship between financial behavior to financial planning. These results indicate that financial management knowledge will be much more useful if it is practiced in everyday life to achieve planned financial goals. For this reason, it is important for the world of education not only to teach financial knowledge, but also to help improve individual behavior so that they have good discipline and self-control.
The study aims to expand the existing body of knowledge by highlighting and summarising current studies on Islamic inheritance. Thus, this study presented a map of the research interest and ...determined primary issues to demonstrate current trends, future research directions, and theory development. A systematic literature review (SLR) approach was employed using the four-step reporting standard for the Systematic Evidence Syntheses (ROSES) review: research question formulation, systematic searching, quality assessment, and data extraction. A total of 33 screened articles between 2008 and 2022 were retrieved from two primary databases (Scopus and Emerald and one supporting database, Google Scholar). The factors were categorised into three primary themes: general, motives and preference studies, and determinant analysis. The themes were subsequently divided into seven sub-themes. Notably, most studies examined unclaimed asset issues based on the determinant analysis. This study offered useful insights into the current research interest regarding the subject. The issues and domains in the current study contribute new knowledge and theory development for future directions in the field. This study addressed empirical gaps and presents an excellent reference relevant for regulators, policymakers, and researchers in comprehending the issues and existing solutions in Islamic inheritance.
