A novel synchronous primary-side dimming control scheme is proposed and tested for a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) driver circuit for liquid crystal display (LCD) backlight illumination ...display applications. This new control scheme features high efficiency, even-dimming sensitive adjustment, even-brightness control for a two-lamp system, less lamp flickering problems, stable feedback control and simplicity. An analysis of the circuit is given, from which a design example is presented.
The first case of Streptococcus bovis peritonitis associated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) in a 40-year-old Chinese woman suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus is ...reported. Streptococcus bovis is part of the normal flora in the human intestine and, less commonly, the female genital tract. Being a rare cause of peritonitis, the possible link between genital tract colonization by Streptococcus bovis and retrograde invasion of the peritoneal cavity is postulated to be the cause of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis peritonitis in this patient. Since invasive Streptococcus bovis infection is associated with gastrointestinal pathology (Streptococcus bovis biotype I) and chronic liver diseases (Streptococcus bovis biotype II), identifying the biotype of Streptococcus bovis could guide treatment by indicating that further investigation of these underlying diseases is required.
The battery charging performance in a stand-alone solar PV system affects the PV system efficiency and the load operating time. The New Energy Center of National Taiwan University has been devoted to ...the development of a PWM charging technique to continue charging the lead-acid battery after the overcharge point to increase the battery storage capacity by more than 10%. The present study intends to use the super-capacitor to further increase the charge capacity before the overcharge point of the battery. The super-capacitor is connected in parallel to the lead-acid battery. This will reduce the overall charging impedance during the charge and increase the charging current, especially in sunny weather. A system dynamics model of the lead-acid battery and super-capacitor was derived and the control system simulation was carried out to predict the charging performance for various weathers. It shows that the overall battery impedance decreases and charging power increases with increasing solar radiation. An outdoor comparative test for two identical PV systems with and without supercapacitor was carried out. The use of super-capacitor is shown to be able to increase the lead-acid charging capacity by more than 25% at sunny weather and 10% in cloudy weather.
We aim to evaluate the effectiveness and tolerability of a sunscreen formulation containing licochalcone A (LicA) and L-carnitine (LC) as an adjuvant to adapalene in the management of acne and ...post-acne pigmentation (PAH).
A randomized, double-blind, active comparator-controlled trial of 51 patients aged 18 years or older with a clinical diagnosis of mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris was conducted at the Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah, Universiti Putra Malaysia. The efficacy and tolerability of once-daily adapalene 1.0% were assessed during the 2-week run-in period. Subsequently, patients were randomized to receive either an add-on investigational LicA-containing sunscreen or niacinamide-containing comparator sunscreen every 4 hourly during daytime for 4 weeks. Patients were followed up at Weeks 2 and 4 to assess for improvement in acne severity, PAH, calorimetric parameters and cutaneous tolerability.
Two weeks of adapalene usage significantly improved acne severity; however, up to 52% of patients experienced dryness, burning and stinging. Adding LicA-containing or comparator sunscreens was associated with further improvement in acne severity, PAH and calorimetric parameters at the study endpoint. No significant differences in the cutaneous tolerability profiles were observed between treatment groups. Notably, significantly fewer patients receiving LicA-containing sunscreen developed scaliness at Week 4 compared with those in the comparator group. In addition, more patients receiving LicA-containing sunscreen reported less dryness, burning and stinging reactions than the comparator group. Importantly, more patients receiving LicA-containing sunscreen agreed that their treatment led to excellent improvement than the comparator group; of note, one patient reported that their condition worsened with the receipt of the comparator product.
The concurrent use of LicA-containing sunscreen with adapalene may improve the cutaneous tolerance to adapalene among Malaysian patients.
We have previously reported the construction of a cell cycle-regulated HSV-1 amplicon vector (denoted as pC8-36) that confers luciferase reporter gene activities dependent on cellular divisions. ...However, luciferase reporter gene is well known for its relatively high sensitivity, thus, it is crucial to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of a transcriptional targeted vector. In this report, we have engineered the FasL and FADD genes into pC8-36 and demonstrated their efficacy for the treatment of human gliomas in vitro and in vivo. Using trypan blue dye exclusion and TUNEL assay, FasL expression mediated by pC8-36 was shown to induce a significantly higher percentage of cell death in proliferating cells than those observed in the G(1)-arrested cells. The observed cell killing effect correlated well with the level of FasL protein expression when analyzed by ELISA assay. Furthermore, the incorporation of both FasL and FADD into pC8-36 resulted in the enhancement of apoptosis in the target glioma cells both in vitro and in vivo. Targeting proliferating tumor cells via the transcriptional control of therapeutic genes could potentially improve the safety and efficacy of cancer gene therapy, and thus would allow the development of strategies for more effective anticancer therapies.
Ischemic stroke accounts for approximately 85% of all strokes. Risk factors include atrial fibrillation, metabolic disorders, and genetic and lifestyle factors. There is limited evidence to support ...the association between atrial fibrillation and the risk of ischemic stroke based on genetic variants. We assessed the relationship between ischemic stroke and atrial fibrillation among participants in Taiwan Biobank (TWB) based on the rs2860905 variant of the cytochrome P450 Family 2 Subfamily C Member 9 (CYP2C9) gene.
Using logistic regression analysis, we estimated the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for ischemic stroke among 17,726 biobank adults recruited from 2008 through 2015.
Of the eligible participants (n = 17,726), 906 were identified with ischemic stroke. Atrial fibrillation was positively associated with ischemic stroke (OR=3.70; 95% CI, 2.21-6.20), whereas the rs2860905 variant was not. The OR for ischemic stroke among those with GA/AA genotype was 1.00 (95% CI, 0.82-1.22) compared to those with the GG genotype. Based on the genotype-stratified analysis, the OR for ischemic stroke was 4.68 (95% CI, 2.70-8.09) among individuals with GG genotype who had atrial fibrillation compared to those who did not.
These results demonstrate that the GG genotype of the CYP2C9 rs2860905 variant appears to enhance the risk of ischemic stroke among adults in Taiwan. It could be essential to factor this genotype-specific contributor to ischemic stroke into clinical and experimental investigations of the disease in Taiwan.
To examine the prevalence of negative Facebook (FB) experiences among gay and bisexual men in emerging adulthood in Taiwan and their association with traditional harassment victimization and quality ...of life (QOL).
In total, 302 gay or bisexual men aged 20-25 years old with experience of FB use in the preceding year were recruited. We measured the types, severities, and prevalence of negative FB experiences by self-report questionnaires. Traditional harassment victimization experiences were assessed using the adapted form of Chinese-version School Bullying Experience Questionnaire (C-SBEQ). QOL was evaluated by The World Health Organization (WHO) Questionnaire on Quality of Life: Short Form (WHOQOL-BREF). Regression analysis was used to assess respective associations.
Among the study participants, 26.5% reported having negative FB experiences in the preceding year. Negative FB experiences were significantly associated with victimization of verbal ridicule and relational exclusion, but not physical aggression or theft of belongings. Negative FB experiences were also significantly associated with unsatisfactory QOL in all domains except social relationships, even the effects of traditional bullying victimization were controlled.
Negative FB experiences are closely associated with both real life victimization and QOL in gay and bisexual men. Subjective experiences on social networking sites require consideration in conception of measures to reduce bullying victimization as well as improve QOL in this population.

Background
Catheter ablation is an effective first-line treatment for symptomatic and recurrent supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). ...The advent of 3D electroanatomic mapping (EAM) has led to a reduction in fluoroscopy use and consequently lower radiation exposure for patients and staff during SVT ablation.
Purpose
The aims of this study are to demonstrate if the use of EAM during SVT ablation reduces fluoroscopy time (FT), and determine if further reductions in FT are observed longitudinally. We hypothesise that over time, with continued use and wider adoption of EAM, greater operator experience, and technological advancements in EAM, there will be further reductions in radiation exposure as estimated by FT.
Methods
All cases of atrioventricular nodal re-entry tachycardia (AVNRT), atrioventricular re-entry tachycardia (AVRT), and/or atrial tachycardia (AT) ablation between May 2011 to May 2022 at a tertiary centre were prospectively recruited. FT between the groups with and without EAM were compared. Within the EAM subset, the trend of FT across the years was also analysed.
Results
Over this 11-year period, there were 1758 cases of SVT ablation (565 without EAM; 1193 with EAM). Between the two groups, there were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in age, sex, history of structural heart disease and/or ischaemic heart disease, stereotaxis use, and diagnosis (AVNRT, AVRT, AT). Cases using EAM were more likely to have >1 SVT ablated during the procedure (0.04) and require intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) (p < 0.001).
The use of EAM was associated with mean reductions in FT and dose area product (DAP) by 19.6 minutes and 18 581 mGy*cm2 respectively (both p < 0.001). EAM was also associated with a longer procedure time (mean +8.8 minutes, p < 0.001). There was no difference in radiofrequency application time between the two groups (p = 0.143).
After controlling for potential confounding factors including age, sex, use of stereotaxis, use of ICE, type and number of SVT, history of prior ablation, and structural heart disease and/or ischaemic heart disease, we found over time (2011-2022), further reduction in FT was observed, with a mean reduction of 0.9 minutes year on year (p < 0.001).
EAM was gradually adopted through the years with the number of cases per year plateauing after 2017. Between 2011-2017, there was a significant reduction in FT (mean of -1.1 minute year on year, p = 0.020), which was not observed from 2017 onwards (p = 0.088). The greatest reduction in FT was observed after the first year of adoption, with a mean reduction of 6.9 minutes between 2012-2013.
Conclusion
This demonstrates that use of EAM in SVT ablation reduces FT and fluoroscopy DAP. There was no incremental benefit observed after 6 years of EAM adoption likely related to operator experience. While there is increased interest in zero fluoroscopy SVT ablation, complementary use of fluoroscopy may still be necessary in select complex cases.
