The MEG experiment, designed to search for the Formula omitted decay, completed data-taking in 2013 reaching a sensitivity level of Formula omitted for the branching ratio. In order to increase the ...sensitivity reach of the experiment by an order of magnitude to the level of Formula omitted, a total upgrade, involving substantial changes to the experiment, has been undertaken, known as MEG II. We present both the motivation for the upgrade and a detailed overview of the design of the experiment and of the expected detector performance.

The MEG II experiment is designed to improve by an order of magnitude the sensitivity of 4.2×10−13 reached by MEG on the search for μ+→e+γ decay. A pixelated Timing Counter (pTC) has been developed ...to improve the time resolution by measuring the positron time information independently with several counters. We constructed and installed the pTC and performed commissioning runs at the πE5 beam line at PSI. A resolution of 38.5 ps is obtained with commissioning run data.

Meson factories are powerful drivers of diverse physics programs. With beam powers already in the MW-regime attention has to be turned to target and beam line design to further significantly increase ...surface muon rates available for experiments. For this reason we have explored the possibility of using a neutron spallation target as a source of surface muons by performing detailed Geant4 simulations with pion production cross sections based on a parametrization of existing data. While the spallation target outperforms standard targets in the backward direction by more than a factor 7 it is not more efficient than standard targets viewed under 90°. Not surprisingly, the geometry of the target plays a large role in the generation of surface muons. Through careful optimization, a gain in surface muon rate of between 30% and 60% over the standard “box-like” target used at the Paul Scherrer Institute could be achieved by employing a rotated slab target. An additional 10% gain could also be possible by utilizing novel target materials such as, e.g., boron carbide.

We present the result of an experiment to measure the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute using Ramsey's method of separated oscillating magnetic fields with ...ultracold neutrons. Our measurement stands in the long history of EDM experiments probing physics violating time-reversal invariance. The salient features of this experiment were the use of a ^{199}Hg comagnetometer and an array of optically pumped cesium vapor magnetometers to cancel and correct for magnetic-field changes. The statistical analysis was performed on blinded datasets by two separate groups, while the estimation of systematic effects profited from an unprecedented knowledge of the magnetic field. The measured value of the neutron EDM is d_{n}=(0.0±1.1_{stat}±0.2_{sys})×10^{-26} e.cm.

A positron timing counter (TC) with 30–40 ps time resolution for 50 MeV/c positrons required by the MEG II experiment has been developed. We employed a highly segmented design with 512 scintillator ...plates (120 × 40 × 5 mm3 and 120 × 50 × 5 mm3) read out by 6-SiPM-arrays at the both ends. Pile up is reduced by the segmented design and multi-counter measurement improves the overall timing resolution. All the single counters were assembled and their resolutions were measured to be below 100 ps in a pre-test with a 90Sr source. The construction and installation were completed in 2017. An engineering run was performed at the end of 2017 at the πE5 muon beam line in PSI, which supplies the most intense muon beam (7 × 107 stops/s on a target) in the world. We successfully operated the full system of TC in the MEG II environment and achieved a time resolution below 40 ps with more than 6 counter hits. The overall resolution for the signal positrons is estimated to be 38.5 ps by weighting the obtained resolutions with the number of hits distribution of the signal positrons obtained by a Monte Carlo simulation. The time resolution of the TC is improved by a factor of 2 with respect to the MEG experiment.

High-intensity secondary beams play a vital role in today’s particle physics and materials science research and require suitable detection techniques to adjust beam characteristics to optimally match ...experimental conditions. To this end we have developed a quasi-non-invasive, ultra-thin, CsI(Tl) luminophore foil detector system, based on CCD-imaging. We have used this to quantify the beam characteristics of an intensity-frontier surface muon beam used for next-generation charged lepton-flavour violation (cLFV) search experiments at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) and to assess the possible use for a future High-intensity Muon Beam (HiMB-project), currently under study at PSI. An overview of the production and intrinsic characteristics of such foils is given and their application in a high-intensity beam environment.
