The contributors to Embodying Black Religions in Africa and Its
Diasporas investigate the complex intersections between the
body, religious expression, and the construction and transformation
of ...social relationships and political and economic power. Among
other topics, the essays examine the dynamics of religious and
racial identity among Brazilian Neo-Pentecostals; the significance
of cloth coverings in Islamic practice in northern Nigeria; the
ethics of socially engaged hip hop lyrics by Black Muslim artists
in Britain; ritual dance performances among Mama Tchamba devotees
in Togo; and how Ifá practitioners from Mexico, Colombia,
Venezuela, Trinidad, and the United States join together in a
shared spiritual ethnicity. From possession and spirit-induced
trembling to dance, the contributors outline how embodied religious
practices are central to expressing and shaping interiority and
spiritual lives, national and ethnic belonging, ways of knowing and
techniques of healing, and sexual and gender politics. In this way,
the body is a crucial site of religiously motivated social action
for people of African descent. Contributors. Rachel Cantave,

Traditional subsistence pastoralists are often seen as causing environmental degradation through overgrazing, and are also seen as responsible for a decline in wildlife numbers through resource ...competition and habitat change. This paper investigates recent ideas on the interaction of pastoralism and conservation that question the validity of the concepts of overstocking and overgrazing as applied to arid and semi-arid rangelands. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a Maasai pastoralist/wildlife conservation joint land use area in northern Tanzania, shows no clear signs of pastoralist-induced environmental degradation despite a preoccupation with this possibility by successive administrations. Ecological studies together with other considerations suggest that joint land use works to the long-term benefit of both pastoralism and conservation in this and other areas.

In this paper, experimental results of a study on iron disilicide light-emitting diodes will be presented. A comparison will be made between the luminescence characteristics of standard iron ...disilicide diodes and diodes that have been augmented by the use of dislocation engineering, using dislocation loops, to provide spatial localisation of the injected carriers. The improvements observed will be discussed and the results kinetically modelled using a rate equation approach.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE—Controversy persists over statins and risk of intracerebral hemorrhage. We determined associations of premorbid lipid-lowering therapy and outcomes among participants of the ...Intensive Blood Pressure Reduction in Acute Cerebral Hemorrhage Trials (INTERACT).
METHODS—The pooled data of INTERACT 1 and 2 (international, multicenter, prospective, open, blinded end point, randomized controlled trials of patients with intracerebral hemorrhage <6 hours and elevated systolic blood pressure) were analyzed with regard to associations of baseline lipid-lowering treatment and clinical outcomes of 3184 participants in a multivariate model. Associations of lipid-lowering therapy and hematoma growth (baseline to 24 hours) in computed tomographic substudies participants (n=1310) were estimated in ANCOVA.
RESULTS—Among 204 patients (6.5%) with baseline lipid-lowering treatment, 90-day clinical outcomes were not significantly different after adjustment for confounding variables including region and age. In the computed tomographic substudy, 24-hour hematoma growth was greater in 124 patients (9%) with, compared with those without, prior lipid-lowering therapy. However, this association was not significant between groups (9.2 versus 6.8 mL; P<0.13), after adjustment for prior antithrombotic therapy.
CONCLUSIONS—No independent associations were found between lipid-lowering medication and adverse outcomes in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage.

We fabricated a Ti Pd asymmetrically contacted single carbon nanotube (CNT) field-effect transistor (FET) with split-gates. Transfer characteristics can be explained if the Schottky barrier for ...electrons is lower at the Pd contact than it is at the Ti contact. Strong rectification is observed when the gates are unbiased, and the rectification direction can be inverted with the appropriate gate bias. When operated as an FET the device has an on off ratio of 1 × 107. Under illumination, photocurrent can only be observed with opposite split-gate bias. Open circuit voltage (V OC) and short circuit current (I SC) increase with increasing opposite polarity split-gate bias, representing the first demonstration of the modulation of V OC and I SC in an asymmetric contact CNT FET.
