This paper reports the results and post-challenge analyses of ChaLearn's AutoDL challenge series, which helped sorting out a profusion of AutoML solutions for Deep Learning (DL) that had been ...introduced in a variety of settings, but lacked fair comparisons. All input data modalities (time series, images, videos, text, tabular) were formatted as tensors and all tasks were multi-label classification problems. Code submissions were executed on hidden tasks, with limited time and computational resources, pushing solutions that get results quickly. In this setting, DL methods dominated, though popular Neural Architecture Search (NAS) was impractical. Solutions relied on fine-tuned pre-trained networks, with architectures matching data modality. Post-challenge tests did not reveal improvements beyond the imposed time limit. While no component is particularly original or novel, a high level modular organization emerged featuring a "meta-learner", "data ingestor", "model selector", "model/learner", and "evaluator". This modularity enabled ablation studies, which revealed the importance of (off-platform) meta-learning, ensembling, and efficient data management. Experiments on heterogeneous module combinations further confirm the (local) optimality of the winning solutions. Our challenge legacy includes an ever-lasting benchmark ( http://autodl.chalearn.org ), the open-sourced code of the winners, and a free "AutoDL self-service."
Depression in older adults with cognitive impairment increases progression to dementia. Microbiota is associated with current mood and cognition, but the extent to which it predicts future symptoms ...is unknown. In this work, we identified microbial features that reflect current and predict future cognitive and depressive symptoms. Clinical assessments and stool samples were collected from 268 participants with varying cognitive and depressive symptoms. Seventy participants underwent 2-year follow-up. Microbial community diversity, structure, and composition were assessed using high-resolution 16 S rRNA marker gene sequencing. We implemented linear regression to characterize the relationship between microbiome composition, current cognitive impairment, and depressive symptoms. We leveraged elastic net regression to discover features that reflect current or future cognitive function and depressive symptoms. Greater microbial community diversity associated with lower current cognition in the whole sample, and greater depression in participants not on antidepressants. Poor current cognitive function associated with lower relative abundance of Bifidobacterium, while greater GABA degradation associated with greater current depression severity. Future cognitive decline associated with lower cognitive function, lower relative abundance of Intestinibacter, lower glutamate degradation, and higher baseline histamine synthesis. Future increase in depressive symptoms associated with higher baseline depression and anxiety, lower cognitive function, diabetes, lower relative abundance of Bacteroidota, and lower glutamate degradation. Our results suggest cognitive dysfunction and depression are unique states with an overall biological effect detectable through gut microbiota. The microbiome may present a noninvasive readout and prognostic tool for cognitive and psychiatric states.

To elucidate the effects of meteorological variations on the activity of influenza A and B in 11 sites across different climate regions.
Daily numbers of laboratory-confirmed influenza A and B cases from 2011–2015 were collected from study sites where the corresponding daily mean temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and daily precipitation amount were used for boosted regression trees analysis on the marginal associations and the interaction effects.
Cold temperature was a major determinant that favored both influenza A and B in temperate and subtropical sites. Temperature-to-influenza A, but not influenza B, exhibited a U-shape association in subtropical and tropical sites. High relative humidity was also associated with influenza activities but was less consistent with influenza B activity. Compared with relative humidity, absolute humidity had a stronger association - it was negatively associated with influenza B activity in temperate zones, but was positively associated with both influenza A and B in subtropical and tropical zones.
The association between meteorological factors and with influenza activity is virus type specific and climate dependent. The heavy influence of temperature on influenza activity across climate zones implies that global warming is likely to have an impact on the influenza burden.
ABSTRACT
Does accounting regime play a role in the well-documented phenomenon of overbidding in M&As? The 2001 regulatory change from a goodwill amortization to a non-amortization regime (SFAS 142) ...affords us a quasi-experimental setting for testing the consequences of M&A accounting rules for acquirers' bidding decisions. Relying on a novel approach to modeling optimal bidding, our primary finding indicates a significant increase in overbidding in the post-2001 period, suggesting that M&A accounting has real consequences for bidding decisions, and that this result is robust to a battery of sensitivity tests. In addition, supplementary tests show that overbidding is more pronounced in pooling versus purchase transactions, and that the accounting regime's implications for overbidding and acquisition premium are distinct. Overall, our findings shed light on the role accounting plays in shaping managerial decisions—and, ultimately, shareholder wealth—in an important corporate setting. They may thus inform researchers, corporate boards, and standards setters.

Laterally spreading tumors (LST) are classified into two subtypes, with the nongranular type harboring a higher risk of (pre)malignant changes than the granular type. Further subdifferentiation into ...two subgroups each has been suggested, but the clinical significance of such a subdifferentiation has not previously been studied in detail in larger numbers.
Out of 6499 patients diagnosed with colorectal adenomas between January 2006 and November 2008, 153 patients (2.35 %) had 158 LSTs, 96 with a granular and 62 with a nongranular pattern. The former group was subdivided into homogeneous and nodular mixed, the latter group into flat elevated and pseudodepressed. Clinical and histopathological parameters were compared among the four subtypes.
Parameters were variably distributed between the four groups, with nodular mixed tumors being larger than the other three types ( P < 0.0001). As in other studies, malignant transformation and premalignant lesion (HGIN/CIS) were more frequent in nodular mixed than in homogeneous tumors (45.0 % vs. 5.6 %, P < 0.001), and also more common in pseudodepressed than in flat elevated tumors (41.7 % vs. 13.2 %, P = 0.011). Submucosal invasive cancer was present in 8.3 % of nodular mixed tumors, 7.9 % of flat elevated, and 12.5 % of pseudodepressed, while it was absent in homogeneous tumors. Serrated adenoma was identified in 10.8 % of all LSTs, and sessile serrated adenoma tended to be more common in flat elevated tumors.
Further subdifferentiation of the LST lesions to identify lesions at risk of malignant transformation makes most sense in the granular type. Among nongranular LSTs, both subtypes carry a significant risk.
Air pollution is a heterogeneous, complex mixture of gases, liquids, and particulate matter. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated a consistent increased risk for cardiovascular events in ...relation to both short- and long-term exposure to present-day concentrations of ambient particulate matter. Several plausible mechanistic pathways have been described, including enhanced coagulation/thrombosis, a propensity for arrhythmias, acute arterial vasoconstriction, systemic inflammatory responses, and the chronic promotion of atherosclerosis. The purpose of this statement is to provide healthcare professionals and regulatory agencies with a comprehensive review of the literature on air pollution and cardiovascular disease. In addition, the implications of these findings in relation to public health and regulatory policies are addressed. Practical recommendations for healthcare providers and their patients are outlined. In the final section, suggestions for future research are made to address a number of remaining scientific questions.
Tunnel field-effect transistors (TFETs) can potentially achieve sub-60-mV/dec SS, but their performance strongly depends on the dopant profile at the tunneling junction. In this paper, very sharp ...(~.2 nm/dec) optimized tunneling-junction dopant profile for the silicon p-n-p-n TFET is demonstrated by molecular beam epitaxial growth. Devices are fabricated with a low-thermal-budget ( <; 620°C) vertical process flow to preserve the as-grown channel profile. Compared with a p-i-n TFET, the p-n-p-n TFET has 30% lower subthreshold swing, I ON three times higher, and 50% reduced tunneling voltage drop.
How to generate more revenues is crucial to cloud providers. Evidences from the Amazon cloud system indicate that "dynamic pricing" would be more profitable than "static pricing." The challenges are: ...How to set the price in real-time so to maximize revenues? How to estimate the price dependent demand so to optimize the pricing decision? We first design a discrete-time based dynamic pricing scheme and formulate a Markov decision process to characterize the evolving dynamics of the price-dependent demand. We formulate a revenue maximization framework to determine the optimal price and theoretically characterize the "structure" of the optimal revenue and optimal price. We apply the <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">Q </tex-math></inline-formula>-learning to infer the optimal price from historical transaction data and derive sufficient conditions on the model to guarantee its convergence to the optimal price, but it converges slowly. To speed up the convergence, we incorporate the structure of the optimal revenue that we obtained earlier, leading to the VpQ-learning (<inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">Q </tex-math></inline-formula>-learning with value projection) algorithm. We derive sufficient conditions, under which the VpQ-learning algorithm converges to the optimal policy. Experiments on a real-world dataset show that the VpQ-learning algorithm outperforms a variety of baselines, i.e., improves the revenue by as high as 50% over the <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">Q </tex-math></inline-formula>-learning, speedy <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">Q </tex-math></inline-formula>-learning, and adaptive real-time dynamic programming (ARTDP), and by as high as 20% over the fixed pricing scheme.
A pregnant gilt infected with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) can transmit the virus to her fetuses across the maternal-fetal-interface resulting in varying disease ...outcomes. However, the mechanisms leading to variation in fetal outcome in response to PRRSV infection are not fully understood. Our objective was to assess targeted immune-related gene expression patterns and pathways in the placenta and fetal thymus to elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved in the resistance/tolerance and susceptibility of fetuses to PRRSV2 infection. Fetuses were grouped by preservation status and PRRS viral load (VL): mock infected control (CTRL), no virus detected (UNINF), virus detected in the placenta only with viable (PLCO-VIA) or meconium-stained fetus (PLCO-MEC), low VL with viable (LVL-VIA) or meconium-stained fetus (LVL-MEC), and high VL with viable (HVL-VIA) or meconium-stained fetus (HVL-MEC).
The host immune response was initiated only in fetuses with detectable levels of PRRSV. No differentially expressed genes (DEG) in either the placenta or thymus were identified in UNINF, PLCO-VIA, and PLCO-MEC when compared to CTRL fetuses. Upon fetal infection, a set of core responsive IFN-inducible genes (CXCL10, IFIH1, IFIT1, IFIT3, ISG15, and MX1) were strongly upregulated in both tissues. Gene expression in the thymus is a better differentiator of fetal VL; the strong downregulation of several innate and adaptive immune pathways (e.g., B Cell Development) are indicative of HVL. Gene expression in the placenta may be a better differentiator of fetal demise than the thymus, based-on principle component analysis clustering, gene expression patterns, and dysregulation of the Apoptosis and Ubiquitination pathways.
Our data supports the concept that fetal outcome in response to PRRSV2 infection is determined by fetal, and more significantly placental response, which is initiated only after fetal infection. This conceptual model represents a significant step forward in understanding the mechanisms underpinning fetal susceptibility to the virus.

In this paper, we present multiwavelength observations of helical kink instability as a trigger of a coronal mass ejection (CME) which occurred in active region NOAA 11163 on 2011 February 24. The ...CME was associated with an M3.5 limb flare. High-resolution observations from the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly suggest the development of helical kink instability in the erupting prominence, which implies a flux rope structure of the magnetic field. A brightening starts below the apex of the prominence with its slow rising motion (~100 km s super(-1)) during the activation phase. A bright structure, indicative of a helix with ~3-4 turns, was transiently formed at this position. The corresponding twist of ~6pi-8pi is sufficient to generate the helical kink instability in a flux rope according to recently developed models. A slowly rising blob structure was subsequently formed at the apex of the prominence, and a flaring loop was observed near the footpoints. Within 2 minutes, a second blob was formed in the northern prominence leg. The second blob erupts (like a plasmoid ejection) with the detachment of the northern prominence leg, and flare intensity maximizes. The first blob at the prominence apex shows rotational motion in the counterclockwise direction in the plane of sky, interpreted as the unwinding motion of a helix, and it also erupts to give the CME. RHESSI hard X-ray (HXR) sources show the two footpoint sources and a loop-top source during the flare. We found RHESSI HXR flux, soft X-ray flux derivative, and CME acceleration in the low corona correlate well, which is in agreement with the standard flare model (CSHKP). We also discuss the possible role of ballooning as well as torus instabilities in driving the CME. We conclude that the CME and flare were triggered by the helical kink instability in a flux rope and accelerated mainly by the torus instability.
