Purpose To evaluate the burden of type 2 diabetes (T2D) among adolescents (15–24 years old) from 1990 to 2019. Methods The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and disability-adjusted life years ...(DALYs) rate of adolescents were analyzed according to age, sex, geographical location, and sociodemographic index (SDI). The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was estimated to quantify the trends. Results From 1990 to 2019, the ASIR (EAPC = 1.07) and age-standardized DALY rate (EAPC = 2.01) of T2D in adolescents showed an increasing trend. The ASIR was higher in males than in females. The burden was greater in the 20–24-year age group. Of the five SDI regions, the highest ASIR and age-standardized DALY rate were found in low-middle-SDI regions, while the greatest increase in these rates was observed in high-SDI regions (EAPC = 3.28 and 3.55, respectively). Of the 21 regions analyzed, the highest ASIR and age-standardized DALY rate were found in Oceania. Of the 204 countries analyzed, the Marshall Islands (651.16) and Kiribati (277.42) had the highest ASIR and DALYs, respectively. The regions with the greatest increase in the ASIR from 1990 to 2019 were Western Europe (EAPC = 4.15), high-income North America (EAPC = 4.72). Conclusions The global burden of T2D in adolescents showed an overall upward trend from 1990 to 2019. It is necessary to strengthen prevention measures related to risk factors for T2D among young people, especially in areas with a low-to-medium SDI.
Breast ultrasound is the first choice for breast tumor diagnosis in China, but the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) categorization routinely used in the clinic often leads to ...unnecessary biopsy. Radiologists have no ability to predict molecular subtypes with important pathological information that can guide clinical treatment.
This retrospective study collected breast ultrasound images from two hospitals and formed training, test and external test sets after strict selection, which included 2,822, 707, and 210 ultrasound images, respectively. An optimized deep learning model (DLM) was constructed with the training set, and the performance was verified in both the test set and the external test set. Diagnostic results were compared with the BI-RADS categorization determined by radiologists. We divided breast cancer into different molecular subtypes according to hormone receptor (HR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression. The ability to predict molecular subtypes using the DLM was confirmed in the test set.
In the test set, with pathological results as the gold standard, the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity were 85.6, 98.7, and 63.1%, respectively, according to the BI-RADS categorization. The same set achieved an accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 89.7, 91.3, and 86.9%, respectively, when using the DLM. For the test set, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.96. For the external test set, the AUC was 0.90. The diagnostic accuracy was 92.86% with the DLM in BI-RADS 4a patients. Approximately 70.76% of the cases were judged as benign tumors. Unnecessary biopsy was theoretically reduced by 67.86%. However, the false negative rate was 10.4%. A good prediction effect was shown for the molecular subtypes of breast cancer with the DLM. The AUC were 0.864, 0.811, and 0.837 for the triple-negative subtype, HER2 (+) subtype and HR (+) subtype predictions, respectively.
This study showed that the DLM was highly accurate in recognizing breast tumors from ultrasound images. Thus, the DLM can greatly reduce the incidence of unnecessary biopsy, especially for patients with BI-RADS 4a. In addition, the predictive ability of this model for molecular subtypes was satisfactory, which has specific clinical application value.
In this paper, a set of accountable protocols denoted as AccountTrade is proposed for big data trading among dishonest consumers. For achieving a secure big data trading environment, AccountTrade ...achieves book-keeping ability and accountability against dishonest consumers throughout the trading (i.e., buying and selling) of datasets. We investigate the consumers' responsibilities in the dataset trading, then we design AccountTrade to achieve accountability against dishonest consumers that are likely to deviate from the responsibilities. Specifically, a uniqueness index is defined and proposed, which is a new rigorous measurement of the data uniqueness for this purpose. Furthermore, several accountable trading protocols are presented to enable data brokers to blame the misbehaving entities when misbehavior is detected. The accountability of AccountTrade is formally defined, proved, and evaluated by an automatic verification tool as well as extensive simulation with real-world datasets. Our evaluation shows that AccountTrade incurs at most 10-kB storage overhead per file, and it is capable of 8-1000 concurrent data upload requests per server.
Feather is an important economic trait of poultry, and growth and development state of feathers plays an important role in the economic value of poultry. Dermal fibroblasts are required for ...structural integrity of the skin and for feather follicle development. How FOXO3 affects feather follicle development as skin tissues change during goose embryo (Anser cygnoides) development and growth is not well understood. Here, we demonstrate that in vitro culture of single feathers and skin tissue results in changes in feather morphological structure by adding drugs to the culture medium that affect FOXO3 expression. We used feather follicles to show that during growth, the root location of feathers, the dermis layer, affects cell proliferation and apoptosis and regulates the expression of major genes in the Wingless-types/beta-catenin (Wnt/β-catenin) signaling pathway through the activity of FOXO3 in dermal fibroblasts. Feathers and dorsal skin tissues develop the correct structure, but feather length and width and feather follicle diameter change significantly (p < 0.05) without significant changes in feather follicle density (p > 0.05). Transfected dermal fibroblasts also showed that FOXO3 affected the formation and development of feather follicles in the embryonic stage by regulating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Therefore, this study reveals the critical role of dermal fibroblast-FOXO3-induced Wnt/β-catenin signaling in promoting the formation and development of embryonic feather follicles.
Abstract
With the rapid advancement of electric vehicle technologies, ternary layered oxide cathodes in commercial Li-ion batteries have become increasingly promising due to their high energy density ...and low cost. However, the need for higher energy density and cell stability has posed significant challenges in their development. While various coating and doping strategies have been demonstrated to improve the rate and cycle performance of cathode materials, morphology-focused modifications of these cathodes are sometimes overlooked, despite their impact on electrochemical performance. Herein, this review focuses on the morphological relationship of cathode materials to their electrochemical performance. We summarize the effects of cathode materials morphology on Li-ion diffusion and stability. We also discuss the recent advances in the development of cathode materials with different morphologies. Finally, we present future perspectives for the design of cathode materials with optimized morphologies to promote their commercialization and fundamental research.
Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water is a valid method to face the challenge of energy shortage. TiO2, as the most well-known and investigated semiconductor photocatalyst, has been ...extensively applied in this field. However, the hydrogen evolution performance of TiO2 suffer from low efficiency due to the high combination of photo-induced carries and the narrow light utilization range resulting from wide band gap. In this work, we use the commercial TiO2 (P25) and fullerene (C60) as precursors to construct an efficient photocatalyst via a mild mixed method. The introduction of C60 not only effectively broaden light absorption, but also suppressed the recombination of photo-generated carriers on TiO2. The photocatalytic water splitting property of the optimum sample achieve 597.2 μmol g−1 h−1, which is 31 times higher than pure P25.

Differences in gait patterns of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and typically developing (TD) peers are visible to the eye, but quantifications of those differences outside of the ...gait laboratory have been elusive. In this work, we measured vertical, mediolateral, and anteroposterior acceleration using a waist-worn iPhone accelerometer during ambulation across a typical range of velocities. Fifteen TD and fifteen DMD children from 3 to 16 years of age underwent eight walking/running activities, including five 25 m walk/run speed-calibration tests at a slow walk to running speeds (SC-L1 to SC-L5), a 6-min walk test (6MWT), a 100 m fast walk/jog/run (100MRW), and a free walk (FW). For clinical anchoring purposes, participants completed a Northstar Ambulatory Assessment (NSAA). We extracted temporospatial gait clinical features (CFs) and applied multiple machine learning (ML) approaches to differentiate between DMD and TD children using extracted temporospatial gait CFs and raw data. Extracted temporospatial gait CFs showed reduced step length and a greater mediolateral component of total power (TP) consistent with shorter strides and Trendelenberg-like gait commonly observed in DMD. ML approaches using temporospatial gait CFs and raw data varied in effectiveness at differentiating between DMD and TD controls at different speeds, with an accuracy of up to 100%. We demonstrate that by using ML with accelerometer data from a consumer-grade smartphone, we can capture DMD-associated gait characteristics in toddlers to teens.
We consider a private data set composed of a set of individuals, and the data are outsourced to a remote cloud server. We revisit the classic query auditing problem in this outsourcing scenario; the ...cloud audits each newly arrived query on a single attribute, and the query is rejected if answering it compromises any individual's privacy. Various query auditing issues have been studied and addressed before. However, previous auditing schemes either have the difficulty of removing denial threats, or lack the analysis of utility (which is defined as the number of answered queries). In this paper, we study the auditing of a sequence of polynomial-time computable queries. Each query is of format f(X̃) a, where f is any polynomial function, X̃ is a subset of the private data set, and the answer is either "yes" or "no". Existing methods cannot be applied directly to audit such a query, because it intermingles several types of functions (e.g., sum and max/min). Hence, we propose CASTLE, which is an inequality query auditing scheme that evaluates the risk of answering a query based on the query history and determines whether a newly arrived query should be answered correctly against a denial threat. Furthermore, to overcome the limitations of the existing query auditing mechanisms, which are of low utility, we relax CASTLE to increase the utility by returning answers with slight perturbations. We show that our method can be applied to audit intermingled equality queries with an extension. Experiments are conducted to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of our methods.
We propose AccountTrade, a set of accountable protocols, for big data trading among dishonest consumers. To secure the big data trading environment, our protocols achieve book-keeping ability and ...accountability against dishonest consumers who may misbehave throughout the dataset transactions. Specifically, we study the responsibilities of the consumers in the dataset trading and design AccountTrade to achieve accountability against the dishonest consumers who may try to deviate from their responsibilities. Specifically, we propose uniqueness index, a new rigorous measurement of the data uniqueness, as well as several accountable trading protocols to enable data brokers to blame the dishonest consumer when misbehavior is detected. We formally define, prove, and evaluate the accountability of our protocols by an automatic verification tool as well as extensive evaluation in real-world datasets. Our evaluation shows that AccountTrade incurs negligible constant storage overhead per file (<;10KB), and it is able to handle 8-1000 concurrent data uploading per server depending on the data types.
Constructing elaborate catalysts to prompt the charge carrier separation and transport is critical to developing efficient photocatalytic systems. Here, a hierarchical hollow structure based on 1D/2D ...BiOCl/Bi₂WO₆ hybrid materials was fabricated by a precursor chemical engineering method. This hybrid is made up of molten 1D BiOCl nanorods and 2D Bi₂WO₆ nanosheets. The synergetic effect of the presence of BiOCl and specific interfaces between BiOCl and Bi₂WO₆ provided efficient interfacial charge transfer of photogenerated carriers under visible light. Seamless BiOCl functions like a noble metal, with platinum-like behavior, accelerating the oxidizing ability of fabricated BiOCl/Bi₂WO₆ hybrids, which was favorable for the photocatalytic decomposition of organic compounds (3.2 times greater for Rhodamine B (RhB) and 4 times greater for Ciprofloxacin (CIP)) over the Bi₂WO₆ catalysts. The beneficial interfacial interaction between BiOCl and Bi₂WO₆ resulting from the unique construction prompted the charge transfer from the conduction band of Bi₂WO₆ to that of BiOCl. The findings presented in this study provide a cost-effective precursor-mediated strategy to realize the critical and efficient separation of photoinduced carriers in environmental remediation applications.
