Currently, most academic discourse looking at the advantages of Building Information Modelling (BIM) is kept very general. This article evaluates how the use of BIM affects social and economic ...aspects of seven different tunneling projects. The analysis is based on internal project documentation and on-site visits, resulting in the authors subjective perception. Due to a confidentiality policy given by ongoing projects, the official documentation is anonymised. On one hand, the social analysis considers teamwork aspects. On the other hand, the economic assessment considers the optimised use of resources. The conclusion shows that the correct and complete implementation of all methods and tools from BIM increase social and economic sustainability, optimising project delivery in tunneling. As a result, among other things, on par communication, teambuilding, and mutual appreciation contribute to an increased social sustainability. Economic sustainability is directly associated with resulting short distances within the team and easy communication and coordination. Consequently, this leads to faster problem solving and a streamlined project execution.

In the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, as well as in the tunnelling domain, inter‐company processes between partners in different roles in large‐scale construction projects ...still exhibit great potential towards digitalisation. Thereby, information should be seamlessly shared between partners according to the Building Information Modelling (BIM) paradigm. Today, different types of artefacts (e.g., models, plans, documents, etc.) are shared at different points in time, which differ in terms of requirements, information content, as well as data formats. In this article, we extend and prototypically implement the concept of Data Drops to provide those artefacts in a digitalised form via a shared Data Drop management platform. For this purpose, we have developed a formal, well‐defined indexed data structure on a metadata level. This not only facilitates traceability, but also enables searching for specific meta‐information and provides a common view on Data Drops. In addition, a networked view between different drops can be provided. The approach is being evaluated on the use case of a real tunnel construction project.
Data Drops im Tunnelbau
In der AEC‐Branche (Architektur, Ingenieur‐ und Bauwesen) wie auch im Tunnelbau haben unternehmensübergreifende Prozesse zwischen Partnern in unterschiedlichen Rollen bei großen Bauprojekten nach wie vor ein großes Potenzial hinsichtlich der Digitalisierung. Dabei sollen Informationen nach dem Building Information Modelling (BIM)‐Paradigma nahtlos zwischen den Partnern ausgetauscht werden können. Heute werden zu unterschiedlichen Zeitpunkten verschiedene Arten von Artefakten (z. B. Modelle, Pläne, Dokumente, etc.) ausgetauscht, die sich in Bezug auf Anforderungen, Informationsgehalt und Datenformate unterscheiden. In diesem Beitrag wird das Konzept der Data Drops erweitert und prototypisch implementiert, um diese Artefakte in digitalisierter Form mittels einer Data Drop Managementplattform zur Verfügung zu stellen. Zu diesem Zweck entwickeln wir eine formal wohldefinierte indexierte Datenstruktur auf Metadatenebene. Dies ermöglicht die Nachvollziehbarkeit, Auffindbarkeit sowie eine gemeinsame Sicht auf die Data Drops. Zusätzlich kann auch eine vernetzte Sicht zwischen verschiedenen Drops bereitgestellt werden. Dieser Ansatz wird am Anwendungsfall eines realen Tunnelbauprojekts evaluiert.
The BIM pilot project for the Karawanken Tunnel North consists of three main components, 3D modeling of the geological prognosis and actual conditions, the inner lining and inner components of the ...tunnel and the portal building and road elements at the portal. The pilot project was started when the preliminary design of the tunnel was already done. Only the portal building was done in BIM from the beginning. For the tunnel lining, the 3D modeling, quantity check and simplified 4D and 5D procedures together with the contractor were the main issues. A major effort had to be invested into data structuring following IFC and Asfinag requirements. Currently the tunnel is being advanced. Regular workshops are held to re‐define the project targets and improve the achievement of the pilot project.
Das Building Information Modeling (BIM)‐Pilotprojekt Karawankentunnel Nord besteht aus den drei Hauptkomponenten einer 3D‐Modellierung der Geologie von Prognose und Ist, der Innenschale und dem Innenausbau des Tunnels und dem Portalgebäude mit dem Vorportalbereich. Das BIM‐Projekt wurde gestartet, als die Entwurfsplanung bereits fertiggestellt war, ausgenommen für das Portalbauwerk, das von vornhinein in BIM geplant war. Für die Tunnelinnenschale steht eine ausreichend detaillierte Modellierung im Vordergrund mit vereinfachten 4D‐ und 5D‐Komponenten in Interaktion mit der ausführenden Baufirma. Für die Durchführung des Projekts musste ein erheblicher Aufwand in die Strukturierung der Daten in Abstimmung mit den Anforderungen der Autobahn‐ und Schnellstraßen‐Finanzierungs‐Aktiengesellschaft (Asfinag) und internationaler Richtlinien (IFC‐Standards) gesteckt werden. Derzeit befindet sich der Tunnel in der Vortriebsphase. In regelmäßigen Workshops werden notwendige Anpassungen an neue Entwicklungen und Bedürfnisse ermittelt und evaluiert, um den Nutzen des Pilotprojekts zu steigern.
