It is demonstrated that carbon quantum dots derived from curcumin (Cur‐CQDs) through one‐step dry heating are effective antiviral agents against enterovirus 71 (EV71). The surface properties of ...Cur‐CQDs, as well as their antiviral activity, are highly dependent on the heating temperature during synthesis. The one‐step heating of curcumin at 180 °C preserves many of the moieties of polymeric curcumin on the surfaces of the as‐synthesized Cur‐CQDs, resulting in superior antiviral characteristics. It is proposed that curcumin undergoes a series of structural changes through dehydration, polymerization, and carbonization to form core–shell CQDs whose surfaces remain a pyrolytic curcumin‐like polymer, boosting the antiviral activity. The results reveal that curcumin possesses insignificant inhibitory activity against EV71 infection in RD cells half‐maximal effective concentration (EC50) >200 µg mL−1 but exhibits high cytotoxicity toward RD cells (half‐maximal cytotoxic concentration (CC50) <13 µg mL−1). The EC50 (0.2 µg mL−1) and CC50 (452.2 µg mL−1) of Cur‐CQDs are >1000‐fold lower and >34‐fold higher, respectively, than those of curcumin, demonstrating their far superior antiviral capabilities and high biocompatibility. In vivo, intraperitoneal administration of Cur‐CQDs significantly decreases mortality and provides protection against virus‐induced hind‐limb paralysis in new‐born mice challenged with a lethal dose of EV71.
Biocarbon quantum dots: a simple one‐step dry heating allows the synthesis of carbon quantum dots derived from curcumin. The obtained carbon quantum dots possess strong antiviral activity against enterovirus 71 through different mechanisms.

Large scale mining, manufacturing industries, exploitation of underground water, depletion of groundwater level, and uncontrolled discharge of industrial wastes have caused severe heavy metal ion pollution to the environment throughout the world. Therefore, the rapid detection of such toxic metal ions is inevitable. However, conventional methods require sophisticated instruments and skilled manpower and are difficult to operate in on-field conditions. Recently, metal nanozyme-based assays have been found to have the potential as an alternative to conventional methods due to their portability, simplicity, and high sensitivity to detect metal ion concentration to as low as parts per trillion (ppt). Metal nanozyme-based systems for heavy metal ions enable rapid and cheap screening on the spot with a very simple instrument such as a UV–vis absorption spectrophotometer and therefore, are convenient for use in field operations, especially in remote parts of the world. The sensing mechanism of a nanozyme-based sensor is highly dependent on its surface properties and specific interactions with particular metal ion species. Such method often encounters selectivity issues, unlike natural enzyme-based assays. Therefore, in this review, we mainly focus our discussion on different types of target recognition and inhibition/enhancement mechanisms, and their responses toward the catalytic activity in the sensing of target metal ions, design strategies, challenges, and future perspectives.
This paper presents a parallel elite genetic algorithm (PEGA) and its application to global path planning for autonomous mobile robots navigating in structured environments. This PEGA, consisting of ...two parallel EGAs along with a migration operator, takes advantages of maintaining better population diversity, inhibiting premature convergence, and keeping parallelism in comparison with conventional GAs. This initial feasible path generated from the PEGA planner is then smoothed using the cubic B-spline technique, in order to construct a near-optimal collision-free continuous path. Both global path planner and smoother are implemented in one field-programmable gate array chip utilizing the system-on-a-programmable-chip technology and the pipelined hardware implementation scheme, thus significantly expediting computation speed. Simulations and experimental results are conducted to show the merit of the proposed PEGA path planner and smoother for global path planning of autonomous mobile robots.
Quenching upon aggregation: 11‐Mercaptoundecanoic acid (11‐MUA)‐protected Au nanoparticles (11‐MUA‐AuNPs) are much more stable and fluoresce much more strongly than the corresponding unmodified ...AuNPs. After addition of 2,6‐pyridinedicarboxylic acid, the 11‐MUA‐AuNPs bind to HgII with both high sensitivity and selectivity.
Photoluminescent gold nanodots (Au NDs) are prepared via etching and codeposition of hybridized ligands, an antimicrobial peptide (surfactin; SFT), and 1‐dodecanethiol (DT), on gold nanoparticles ...(≈3.2 nm). As‐prepared ultrasmall SFT/DT–Au NDs (size ≈2.5 nm) are a highly efficient antimicrobial agent. The photoluminescence properties and stability as well as the antimicrobial activity of SFT/DT–Au NDs are highly dependent on the density of SFT on Au NDs. Relative to SFT, SFT/DT–Au NDs exhibit greater antimicrobial activity, not only to nonmultidrug‐resistant bacteria but also to the multidrug‐resistant bacteria. The minimal inhibitory concentration values of SFT/DT–Au NDs are much lower (>80‐fold) than that of SFT. The antimicrobial activity of SFT/DT–Au NDs is mainly due to the synergistic effect of SFT and DT–Au NDs on the disruption of the bacterial membrane. In vitro cytotoxicity and hemolysis analyses have revealed superior biocompatibility of SFT/DT–Au NDs than that of SFT. Moreover, in vivo methicillin‐resistant S. aureus–infected wound healing studies in rats show faster healing, better epithelialization, and are more efficient in the production of collagen fibers when SFT/DT–Au NDs are used as a dressing material. This study suggests that the SFT/DT–Au NDs are a promising antimicrobial candidate for preclinical applications in treating wounds and skin infections.
Surfactin, an antimicrobial lipopeptide, when self‐assembled on photoluminescent gold nanodots (Au NDs) exhibits an >80‐fold improvement in its antimicrobial activity against multidrug‐resistant bacteria. Antibacterial wound‐healing assays further reveal that the surfactin–Au ND hybrid material is superior to that of surfactin alone on a bacteria‐infected flesh wound in rats.
Monitoring the levels of potentially toxic metal (PTM) ions (e.g., Hg(2+), Pb(2+), Cu(2+)) in aquatic ecosystems is important because these ions can have severe effects on human health and the ...environment. Gold (Au) nanomaterials are attractive sensing materials because of their unique size- and shape-dependent optical properties. This review focuses on optical assays for Hg(2+), Pb(2+), and Cu(2+) ions using functionalized Au nanomaterials. The syntheses of functionalized Au nanomaterials are discussed. We briefly review sensing approaches based on changes in absorbance resulting from metal ion-induced aggregation of Au nanoparticles (NPs) or direct deposition of metal ions onto Au NPs. The super-quenching properties of Au NPs allow them to be employed in 'turn on' and 'turn off' fluorescence approaches for the sensitive and selective detection of Hg(2+), Pb(2+), and Cu(2+) ions. We highlight approaches based on fluorescence quenching through analyte-induced aggregation or the formation of metallophilic complexes of Au nanodots (NDs). We discuss the roles of several factors affecting the selectivity and sensitivity of the nanosensors toward the analytes: the size of the Au nanomaterial, the length and sequence of the DNA or the nature of the thiol, the surface density of the recognition ligand, and the ionic strength and pH of the buffer solution. In addition, we emphasize the potential of using new nanomaterials (e.g., fluorescent silver nanoclusters) for the detection of PTM ions.
White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is the causative agent of white spot syndrome (WSS), a disease that has led to severe mortality rates in cultured shrimp all over the world. The WSSV is a large, ...ellipsoid, enveloped double-stranded DNA virus with a wide host range among crustaceans. Currently, the main antiviral method is to block the receptor of the host cell membrane using recombinant viral proteins or virus antiserum. In addition to interference with the ligand-receptor binding, disrupting the structure of the virus envelope may also be a means to combat the viral infection. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are carbonaceous nanoparticles that have many advantageous characteristics, including small size, low cytotoxicity, cheap, and ease of production and modification. Polyamine-modified CQDs (polyamine CQDs) with strong antibacterial ability have been identified, previously. In this study, polyamine CQDs are shown to attach to the WSSV envelope and inhibit the virus infection, with a dose-dependent effect. The results also show that polyamine CQDs can upregulate several immune genes in shrimp and reduce the mortality upon WSSV infection. This is first study to identify that polyamine CQDs could against the virus. These results, indeed, provide a direction to develop effective antiviral strategies or therapeutic methods using polyamine CQDs in aquaculture.
This paper presents an embedded adaptive robust controller for trajectory tracking and stabilization of an omnidirectional mobile platform with parameter variations and uncertainties caused by ...friction and slip. Based on a dynamic model of the platform, the adaptive controller to achieve point stabilization, trajectory tracking, and path following is synthesized via the adaptive backstepping approach. This robust adaptive controller is then implemented into a high-performance field-programmable gate array chip using hardware/software codesign technique and system-on-a-programmable-chip design concept with a reusable user intellectual property core library. Furthermore, a soft-core processor and a real-time operating system are embedded into the same chip for realizing the control law to steer the mobile platform. Simulation results are conducted to show the effectiveness and merit of the proposed control method in comparison with a conventional proportional-integral feedback controller. The performance and applicability of the proposed embedded adaptive controller are exemplified by conducting several experiments on an autonomous omnidirectional mobile robot.

The organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been emerging as a promising photovoltaic technology with the rapid development of power conversion efficiency (PCE). The electron transport layer (ETL) is found to play a critical role in the PCE, stability and reliability of the solar cells. SnO2, which can be processed at low temperature and possesses the merits of good energy band level and high electron mobility, has been deemed as an excellent alternative ETL material to the classical TiO2. In the past few years, modifications that can finely tailor the morphologies, crystallinity, energy level, electron mobility, conductivity, defects, surface chemical states, and interface condition of SnO2-ETL have contributed dominantly to the fast development of the SnO2-ETL based PSCs. In this review, the recent advances of modified SnO2 as ETLs for PSCs are summarized and the corresponding mechanisms for the performance improvements are comprehensively discussed. Finally, the challenges and the opportunities for the future development of SnO2-ETL based PSCs are proposed.
