Fulton's K condition factor was applied, for the first time, to inter‐tidal specimens of the shanny (Lipophrys pholis) and long‐spined scorpion fish (Taurulus bubalis) from two English rocky shore ...and two Welsh rocky shore sites during summer 2010 and winter 2011. As both species contribute to the diet of commercial species such as cod (Gadus morhua) and near‐threatened species such as the European otter (Lutra lutra), their condition may affect that of these predators. Fulton's K found that inter‐tidal Welsh fish maintained a ‘good’ condition between seasons, whereas the inter‐tidal English fish were in a poorer condition during winter. Although condition also changed amongst the sites on each coast, further studies are needed into fish morphologies, environmental parameters, prey availabilities and abundances, and fish specimen sex and maturities.
Aim
Understanding patterns in the abundance of species across thermal ranges can give useful insights into the potential impacts of climate change. The abundant‐centre hypothesis suggests that ...species will reach peak abundance at the centre of their thermal range where conditions are optimal, but evidence in support of this hypothesis is mixed and limited in geographical and taxonomic scope. We tested the applicability of the abundant‐centre hypothesis across a range of intertidal organisms using a large, citizen science‐generated data set.
Location
UK.
Methods
Species' abundance records were matched with their location within their thermal range. Patterns in abundance distribution for individual species, and across aggregated species abundances, were analysed using Kruskal–Wallis tests and quantile general additive models.
Results
Individually, invertebrate species showed increasing abundances in the cooler half of the thermal range and decreasing abundances in the warmer half of the thermal range. The overall shape for aggregated invertebrate species abundances reflected a broad peak, with a cool‐skewed maximum abundance. Algal species showed little evidence for an abundant‐centre distribution individually, but overall the aggregated species abundances suggested a hump‐backed abundance distribution.
Main Conclusions
Our study follows others in showing mixed support for the abundant‐centre hypothesis at an individual species level, but demonstrates an increased predictability in species responses when an aggregated overall response is considered.
Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and erectile dysfunction (ED) are highly prevalent in aging men. A common pathophysiology is hypothesized to explain causal link. However, prevalence of ED in ...patients with LUTS remains underdiagnosed, as we believe general practitioners (GPs) do not inquire about ED in men presenting with LUTS.
Our goal to find out if LUTS and ED were dealt with in an integrated fashion in primary care.
One hundred consecutive patients with LUTS attending the prostate assessment clinic anonymously completed a locally developed, qualitatively validated questionnaire and sexual health inventory for men.
(i) Prevalence of concomitant ED in men presenting with LUTS; (ii) proportion of GPs enquiring about ED; (iii) patients with LUTS+ED who were offered treatment in primary care; and (iv) patients who sought treatment on review in secondary care.
The age of patients was 39–86 years. Fifty-four percent admitted to ED: 66% ≥60 years, and 28% ≤60 years had ED.
Mean international prostate symptom score in both LUTS+/−ED groups was 16. There was a direct correlation between severity of LUTS and ED. Only 13/54 (24%) admitted ED to their GP. Of the patients, 15.4% received treatment, but 90.9% untreated patients were interested in therapy. Seventy-one percent stated definite reasons for inability to discuss their ED. GPs inquired about ED in only 9.2%. Overall, 66.6% wanted their ED addressed.
Fifty-four percent of the patients with LUTS also admitted to ED. Patients with more severe LUTS had more severe ED. More than 75% of patients did not report coexistent ED. GPs inquired about ED in only <10% of patients and offered no therapy to more than 80%. Sixty-seven percent of LUTS patients were interested in receiving treatment for ED when offered.
A more integrated approach is desired to address the prevalence of ED in patients presenting with LUTS in order to offer them a comprehensive management in primary care.
For centuries, Jerusalem has been a destination point for many foreigners: pilgrims, tourists, scholars, and missionaries. Their writings help recreate life in Jerusalem in the nineteenth and early ...twentieth centuries and explain the need outsiders have felt to be involved in Jerusalem's progress. The published diaries, letters, and books by twenty-eight European and American travelers who visited Jerusalem during the 1800s and early 1900s were examined in this work, to see what attitudes foreigners had towards the natives, the holy sites, their co-religionists, and foreign involvement. Chapter One reveals visitors' general impressions. Chapter Two presents descriptions of the Holy Sites and market of Jerusalem. Chapter Three examines the peoples of Jerusalem. Chapter Four focuses on foreign involvement. The records of these visitors describe their interactions with the city and its people, and their reactions towards both. They also explain why many felt that foreign involvement was essential for Jerusalem's development.
