Growth arrest-specific protein 6 (Gas6) is a vitamin K-dependent protein expressed by endothelial cells and leukocytes that are involved in cell survival, migration, and proliferation in response to ...inflammatory processes. The aim of this study was to assess the implications of Gas6 in Sjögren syndrome (SS) and its expression in the labial salivary gland.
A total of 254 adults, including 159 with primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS), 34 with secondary Sjögren syndrome (sSS), and 61 normal controls, were recruited. Plasma Gas6 concentrations were determined, and Gas6 expressions in labial salivary gland (LSG) tissues from controls and pSS and sSS patients were also evaluated. Plasma Gas6 concentrations were significantly lower among patients with pSS than normal controls (13.5 ± 8.6 vs. 19.9 ± 13.4 ng/ml, p < 0.001). There were, however, no significant differences in plasma Gas6 levels between pSS and sSS patients (13.5 ± 8.6 vs. 16.9 ± 11.2 ng/ml, p = 0.068). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, after adjustment for white blood cell count, hemoglobin level, platelet count, lymphocyte count, and C3 and C4 levels, lower plasma Gas6 concentrations were significantly associated with an increased risk of SS. Moreover, by using a semi-quantitative scale to evaluate Gas6 expression in LSG tissues, Gas6 expression was found to be markedly lower in LSG tissues from pSS patients than in tissues from normal controls.
Decreased plasma Gas6 concentration and LSG expression were associated with pSS. As such, Gas6 may represent a novel independent risk factor for pSS, with a potential role in salivary gland inflammation and dysfunction.

Background
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained atrial arrhythmia. Accurate detection of the timing and possibility of AF termination is vital for optimizing rhythm and rate control ...strategies. The present study evaluated whether the ventricular response (VR) in AF offers a distinctive electrocardiographic indicator for predicting AF termination.
Methods
Patients experiencing sustained paroxysmal AF for more than 3 h were observed using 24‐h ambulatory Holter monitoring. VR within 5 min before AF termination (VR 0–5 min, BAFT) was compared with VR observed during the 60th to 65th min (VR 60–65 min, BAFT) and the 120th to 125th min (VR 120–125 min, BAFT) before AF termination. Maximum and minimum VRs were calculated on the basis of the average of the highest and lowest VRs across 10 consecutive heartbeats.
Results
Data from 37 episodes of paroxysmal AF revealed that the minimum VR0–5 min, BAFT (64 ± 20 bpm) was significantly faster than both the minimum VR120–125 min, BAFT (56 ± 15 bpm) and the minimum VR60–65 min, BAFT (57 ± 16 bpm, p < .05). Similarly, the maximum VR0–5 min, BAFT (158 ± 49 bpm) was significantly faster than the maximum VR120–125 min, BAFT (148 ± 45 bpm, p < .05). In the daytime, the minimum VR0–5 min, BAFT (66 ± 20 bpm) was significantly faster than both the minimum VR60–65 min, BAFT (58 ± 17 bpm) and minimum VR120–125 min, BAFT (57 ± 15 bpm, p < .05). However, the mean and maximum VR0–5 min, BAFT in the daytime were similar to the mean and maximum VR120–125 min in the daytime, respectively. At night, the minimum, mean, and maximum VR0–5 min, BAFT were similar to the minimum, mean, and maximum VR120–125 min, respectively.
Conclusions
Elevated VR rates during AF episodes may be predictors for the termination of AF, especially during the daytime and in patients with nondilated left atria. These findings may guide the development of clinical approaches to rhythm control in AF.
The Omicron variant of concern (VOC) has surged in many countries and replaced the previously reported VOC. To identify different Omicron strains/sublineages on a rapid, convenient, and precise ...platform, we report a novel multiplex real‐time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR) method in one tube based on the Omicron lineage sequence variants' information. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) subvariants were used in a PCR‐based assay for rapid identification of Omicron sublineage genotyping in 1000 clinical samples. Several characteristic mutations were analyzed using specific primers and probes for the spike gene, del69–70, and F486V. To distinguish Omicron sublineages (BA.2, BA.4, and BA.5), the NSP1:141–143del in the ORF1a region and D3N mutation in membrane protein occurring outside the spike protein region were analyzed. Results from the real‐time PCR assay for one‐tube accuracy were compared to those of whole genome sequencing. The developed PCR assay was used to analyze 400 SARS‐CoV‐2 positive samples. Ten samples determined as BA.4 were positive for NSP1:141–143del, del69–70, and F486V mutations; 160 BA.5 samples were positive for D3N, del69–70, and F486V mutations, and 230 BA.2 samples were without del69–70. Screening these samples allowed the identification of epidemic trends at different time intervals. Our novel one‐tube multiplex PCR assay was effective in identifying Omicron sublineages.
Oxidative stress is an important pathomechanism found in numerous ocular degenerative diseases. To provide a better understanding of the mechanism and treatment of oxidant/antioxidant ...imbalance-induced ocular diseases, this article summarizes and provides updates on the relevant research. We review the oxidative damage (e.g., lipid peroxidation, DNA lesions, autophagy, and apoptosis) that occurs in different areas of the eye (e.g., cornea, anterior chamber, lens, retina, and optic nerve). We then introduce the antioxidant mechanisms present in the eye, as well as the ocular diseases that occur as a result of antioxidant imbalances (e.g., keratoconus, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma), the relevant antioxidant biomarkers, and the potential of predictive diagnostics. Finally, we discuss natural antioxidant therapies for oxidative stress-related ocular diseases.
Several observational cohort and meta-analytical studies in humans have shown that statin users have a lower risk of fractures or greater bone mineral densities (BMD) than nonusers. However, some ...studies including randomized clinical trials have the opposite results, particularly in Asian populations.
This study investigates the impacts of statins on new-onset osteoporosis in Taiwan.
In a nationwide retrospective population-based cohort study, 45,342 subjects aged between 50-90 years having received statin therapy (statin-users) since January 1 2001, and observed through December 31 2013 were selected from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan. Likewise, 115,594 patients had no statin therapy (statin-non-users) were included as controls in this study. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards analysis for drug exposures was employed to evaluate the association between statin treatment and new-onset of osteoporosis risk. We also used the long-rank test to evaluate the difference of probability of osteoporosis-free survival.
During the 13-year follow-up period, 16,146 of all enrolled subjects (10.03%) developed osteoporosis, including 3097 statin-users (6.83%) and 13,049 statin-non-users (11.29%). Overall, statin therapy reduced the risk of new-onset osteoporosis by 48% (adjusted hazard ratio HR 0.52; 95% CI 0.50 to 0.54). A dose-response relationship between statin treatment and the risk of new-onset osteoporosis was observed. The adjusted hazard ratios for new-onset osteoporosis were 0.84 (95% CI, 0.78 to 0.90), 0.56 (95% CI, 0.52 to 0.60) and 0.23 (95% CI, 0.21 to 0.25) when cumulative defined daily doses (cDDDs) ranged from 28 to 90, 91 to 365, and more than 365, respectively, relative to nonusers. Otherwise, high-potency statins (rosuvastatin and atorvastatin) and moderate-potency statin (simvastatin) seemed to have a potential protective effect for osteoporosis.
In this population-based cohort study, we found that statin use is associated with a decreased risk of osteoporosis in both genders. The osteoprotective effect of statins seemed to be more prominent with a dependency on the cumulative dosage and statin intensity.

To evaluate the change of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and ascorbic acid (AA) between femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (FS‐LASIK) and laser‐assisted lenticule extraction (LALEX). A ...prospective non‐randomized study was conducted, and 33 and 75 eyes that had undergone FS‐LASIK or LALEX surgeries were enrolled, respectively. The tear films near corneal incisions were collected, and the concentrations of TAC and AA were determined. The generalized linear mixed model was adopted to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) of TAC and AA between the two groups. The AA reduction was significant 1 month after the LALEX and FS‐LASIK procedures (both p < 0.05), and the decrement in AA level was significantly larger in the FS‐LASIK group compared to the LALEX group (p = 0.0002). In the subgroup analysis, the LALEX group demonstrated a lower decrement in TAC level in the individuals with dry eye disease (DED) than the FS‐LASIK group (p = 0.0424), and the LALEX group demonstrated a significantly lower AA decrement in the participants with high myopia (p = 0.0165) and DED (p = 0.0043). The LALEX surgery causes lesser AA decrement compared to FS‐LASIK surgery especially for the patients with DED.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis associated with an increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), however their impact on decreasing joint replacement surgery has ...yet to be elucidated. This study aimed to investigate if the combination of COX-2 inhibitor and metformin therapy in OA with T2DM were associated with lower the rate of joint replacement surgery than COX-2 inhibitor alone.
In total, 968 subjects with OA and T2DM under COX-2 inhibitor and metformin therapy (case group) between 1 January to 31 December 2000 were selected from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan, along with 1936 patients were the 1:2 gender-, age-, and index year-controls matched without metformin therapy (control group) in this study. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to compare the rate of receiving joint replacement surgery during 10 years of follow-up.
At the end of follow-up, 438 of all enrolled subjects (15.08%) had received the joint replacement surgery, including 124 in the case group (12.81%) and 314 in the control group (16.22%). The case group tended to be associated with lower rate of receiving the joint replacement surgery at the end of follow-up than the control group (p = 0.003). Cox proportional hazards regression (HR) analysis revealed that study subjects under combination therapy with metformin had lower rate of joint replacement surgery (adjusted HR 0.742 (95% CI = 0.601-0.915, p = 0.005)). In the subgroups, study subjects in the combination metformin therapy who were female, good adherence (>80%), lived in the highest urbanization levels of residence, treatment in the hospital center and lower monthly insurance premiums were associated with a lower risk of joint replacement surgery than those without.
Patients who have OA and T2DM receiving combination COX-2 inhibitors and metformin therapy associated with lower joint replacement surgery rates than those without and this may be attributable to combination therapy much more decrease pro-inflammatory factors associated than those without metformin therapy.

A multifunctional ion‐sensitive floating gate Fin field‐effect transistor (ISFGFinFET) for hydrogen and sodium detection is demonstrated. The ISFGFinFET comprises a FGFET and a sensing film, both of ...which are used to detect and improve sensitivity. The sensitivity of the ISFGFinFET can be adjusted by modulating the coupling effect of the FG. A nanoseaweed structure is fabricated via glancing angle deposition (GLAD) technology to obtain a large sensing area to enhance the sensitivity for hydrogen ion detection. A sensitivity of 266 mV per pH can be obtained using a surface area of 3.28 mm2. In terms of sodium ion detection, a calix4arene sensing film to monitor sodium ions, obtaining a Na+ sensitivity of 432.7 mV per pNa, is used. In addition, the ISFGFinFET demonstrates the functionality of multiple ions detection simultaneously. The sensor arrays composed of 3 × 3 pixels are demonstrated, each of which comprise of an FGFET sensor and a transistor. Furthermore, 16 × 16 arrays with a decoder and other peripheral circuits are constructed and simulated. The performance of the proposed ISFGFinFET is competitive with that of other state‐of‐the‐art ion sensors.
The necessity for high sensitivity for ion detection has been improved in recent years. In this work, to adjust and increase the sensitivity, a floating gate (FG) structure is introduced into the Fin field‐effect transistor (FinFET) device while the nanoseaweed Al2O3 structure is fabricated for the ion reacting layer via glancing angle deposition. Furthermore, combining different materials, the ion‐sensitive FGFinFET can realize multiple ion detection.
Studies have confirmed that osteoporosis has been considered as one of the complications of diabetes, and the health hazards to patients are more obvious. This study is mainly based on the Taiwan ...National Health Insurance Database (TNHID). Through the analysis of TNHID, it is shown that the combined treatment of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) medicine in patients of diabetes with osteoporosis (T2DOP) with lower related risks.
According to the study design, 3131 patients selected from TNHID who received TCM treatment were matched by 1-fold propensity score according to gender, age, and inclusion date as the control group. Cox proportional hazards analyzes were performed to compare fracture surgery, hospitalization, and all-cause mortality during a mean follow-up from 2000 to 2015.
A total of 1055/1469/715 subjects (16.85%/23.46%/11.42%) had fracture surgery/inpatient/all-cause mortality of which 433/624/318 (13.83%/19.93%/10.16%) were in the TCM group) and 622/845/397 (19.87%/26.99%/12.68%) in the control group. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that subjects in the TCM group had lower rates of fracture surgery, inpatient and all-cause mortality (adjusted HR = 0.467; 95% CI = 0.225-0.680, P<0.001; adjusted HR = 0.556; 95% CI = 0.330-0.751, P<0.001; adjusted HR = 0.704; 95% CI = 0.476-0.923, P = 0.012). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the cumulative risk of fracture surgery, inpatient and all-cause mortality was significantly different between the case and control groups (all log-rank p<0.001).
This study provides longitudinal evidence through a cohort study of the value of integrated TCM for T2DOP. More research is needed to fully understand the clinical significance of these results.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN) induced by cold medicine (CM) may result in severe ocular complications (SOCs). The purpose of this study was to investigate the human ...leucocyte antigen (HLA) polymorphism pattern in CM-induced patients with SJS/TEN developing SOCs.
All participants, including patients with SJS/TEN (n=33) and control patients (n=98), were enrolled through visits to the clinic from 2016 to 2017. SOCs were diagnosed (n=26) via a chart review or eye examination. Patient saliva was collected with commercialised kits and genotyped with PCR assays followed by hybridisation with sequence-specific oligonucleotide (SSO) probes (PCR-SSO) using commercial bead-based typing kits.
In all patients with SJS/TEN with SOCs, the HLA-A*02:07 carrier frequency was significantly higher than that in controls (OR=3.24, 95% CI=1.09 to 9.60, p=0.049), as was the genotype frequency (OR=3.89, 95% CI=1.49 to 10.16, p=0.007). In patients with CM-SJS/TEN with SOCs, the HLA-A*02:07 carrier frequency was higher than that in controls (OR=5.56, 95% CI=1.52 to 20.00, p=0.016), as was the allele frequency (OR=6.67, 95% CI=2.33 to 20.00, p=0.001). In patients with CM-SJS/TEN with SOCs, the HLA-B*46:01 allele frequency was significantly higher than that in controls (OR=3.85, 95% CI=1.52 to 10.00, p=0.008).
The HLA-A*02:07 and HLA-B*46:01 alleles were significantly associated with SOCs among Han Chinese patients with CM-SJS/TEN. These findings demonstrate the genetic diversity in SJS pathogenesis among different ethnic groups.
