Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) appears to be a ubiquitous higher plant defence response. Resistance is dependent on the high-level expression of SAR genes. Mutations, transgenes or chemicals that ...cause high-level SAR gene expression also cause resistance to pathogens. Furthermore, when SAR is eliminated, through the reduction of salicylic acid accumulation or activity, generalized severe disease-susceptibility occurs. Therefore, SAR appears to be an essential component of the defensive repertoire that ensures plant health in nature. Chemicals that activate SAR in the field, as well as crop varieties with constitutive SAR gene expression, will provide new solutions to disease problems for growers in the near future.
Our current understanding of galaxy evolution still has many uncertainties associated with the details of accretion, processing, and removal of gas across cosmic time. The next generation of radio ...telescopes will image the neutral hydrogen (HI) in galaxies over large volumes at high redshifts, which will provide key insights into these processes. We are conducting the COSMOS HI Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES) with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, which is the first survey to simultaneously observe HI from z=0 to z~0.5. Here, we report the highest redshift HI 21-cm detection in emission to date of the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) COSMOS J100054.83+023126.2 at z=0.376 with the first 178 hours of CHILES data. The total HI mass is \((2.9\pm1.0)\times10^{10}~M_\odot\), and the spatial distribution is asymmetric and extends beyond the galaxy. While optically the galaxy looks undisturbed, the HI distribution suggests an interaction with candidate a candidate companion. In addition, we present follow-up Large Millimeter Telescope CO observations that show it is rich in molecular hydrogen, with a range of possible masses of \((1.8-9.9)\times10^{10}~M_\odot\). This is the first study of the HI and CO in emission for a single galaxy beyond z~0.2.
A study of 28 infants (ages 8-12 months) investigated their ability to drink from a straw. Results indicate 22 percent were not able to drink from a straw, whereas 78 percent were able to do so. Data ...failed to reveal any significant differences based on gender, age, or ethnicity. (Contains nine references.) (Author/CR)
N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-induced release of 3HGABA from mouse striatal neurons in primary culture has been evaluated as a screening method for demonstrating the functional activity of potential ...NMDA antagonists with respect to a cellular response. Antagonists were chosen for their specificity towards each of the three principal binding sites which have been characterised on the NMDA-receptor complex: the glutamate site, the ion-channel and in particular the glycine regulatory site where several novel halogenated derivatives of kynurenic acid have been tested. All the compounds were effective in blocking 3HGABA release and their activity was related to their potency in displacing the binding of specific ligands for each of the three sites in rat cortex membrane preparations. This was confirmed by a correlation curve for the series of kynurenate derivatives (correlation coefficient r = 0.96). The specificity of these latter compounds for the glycine site was demonstrated by the addition of excess glycine which totally reversed their inhibition but not that of antagonists acting at the glutamate or ion-channel sites. Within the kynurenate series the 5,7-dichloro derivative was shown to be more active than the 7-chloro derivative, the most active glycine antagonist previously described. These results show that this is a simple and reliable system for demonstrating a functional effect of NMDA antagonists.
