In an effort to develop harsh environment electronic and sensor technologies for aircraft engine safety and monitoring, we have used capacitive-based pressure sensors to shift the frequency of a ...SiC-electronics-based oscillator to produce a pressure-indicating signal that can be readily transmitted, e.g. wirelessly, to a receiver located in a more benign environment. Our efforts target 500 C, a temperature well above normal operating conditions of commercial circuits but within areas of interest in aerospace engines, deep mining applications and for future missions to the Venus atmosphere. This paper reports for the first time a ring oscillator circuit integrated with a capacitive pressure sensor, both operating at 500 C. This demonstration represents a significant step towards a wireless pressure sensor that can operate at 500 C and confirms the viability of 500 C electronic sensor systems.
We have carried out a randomized phase III study in 105 patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, comparing a four-drug cisplatin-mitomycin-based combination chemotherapy regimen to ...sequential single-agent therapy. The combination chemotherapy regimen consisted of mitomycin C (10 mg/m2), vinblastine (5 mg/m2), methotrexate (40 mg/m2), and cisplatin (40 mg/m2) given every 28 days. Sequential single-agent chemotherapy consisted of mitomycin C (10 mg/m2) monthly until progression followed by vinblastine (5 mg/m2) every 2 weeks until progression followed by methotrexate (40 mg/m2) weekly until relapse. Patients failing either regimen were followed with supportive care. The objective response rate for the sequential single-agent therapy was 19% versus 25% for the combination chemotherapy group (P greater than .5). The median survival for the single-agent group was 166 days and 191 days for the combination chemotherapy group. Overall survival was not statistically different between the two groups (P greater than .5). Leucopenia, anemia, and prolonged anorexia with nausea and vomiting were more common in the combination chemotherapy group compared to the single-agent group. This study failed to demonstrate a sufficient therapeutic benefit in the face of the added toxicity for the combination chemotherapy regimen compared to sequential single-agent therapy.
Familial benign hypercalcemia, or familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia (FHH), is frequently confused with primary hyperparathyroidism, but the consistent failure of subtotal parathyroidectomy to ...normalize serum calcium levels in FHH makes accurate distinction from familial hyperparathyroidism imperative. Because ultrasonography frequently demonstrates enlargement of the parathyroid glands in hyperparathyroidism, we examined 14 hypercalcemic adults (who had not undergone operation) from seven kindreds with FHH by using a high-resolution real-time scanner. We compared our results with those from 156 patients (who had undergone scanning preoperatively) with surgically confirmed hyperparathyroidism. Enlargement of the parathyroid glands was detected ultrasonographically in 137 of 156 (88%) of the total group of patients with hyperparathyroidism and in 17 of 24 patients (71%) with hyperparathyroidism who had hypercalcemia (serum calcium, 10.6 to 11.0 mg/dl) comparable to that of the FHH group (mean value, 10.7 mg/dl). In contrast, the single possible parathyroid lesion seen in the FHH group was substantially smaller (4 mm) than the smallest (7 mm, 75 mg) abnormal gland reliably detected by ultrasonography in the group with hyperparathyroidism and was conceivably normal in size. Patients with FHH have a dramatic absence of ultrasonographic parathyroid enlargement. High-resolution parathyroid ultrasonography may be of ancillary diagnostic benefit in patients with familial hypercalcemia.
