The health of astronauts during and after the return from long-haul space missions is paramount. There is plethora of research in the literature about the medical side of astronauts’ health, however, ...the dental and oral health of the space crew seem to be overlooked with limited information in the literature about the effects of the space environment and microgravity on the oral and dental tissues. In this article, we shed some light on the latest available research related to space dentistry and provide some hypotheses that could guide the directions of future research and help maintain the oral health of space crews. We also promote for the importance of regenerative medicine and dentistry as well highlight the opportunities available in the expanding field of bioprinting/biomanufacturing through utilizing the effects of microgravity on stem cells culture techniques. Finally, we provide recommendations for adopting a multidisciplinary approach for oral healthcare during long-haul space flights.
The integration of renewable sources (RSs) and the widespread deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) has transitioned from a luxury to a necessity in modern power systems. This results from the sharp ...increase in electric power demand and public awareness of switching to green energy. However, in addition to load fluctuations and changes in system parameters, these RSs and EVs negatively impact the load frequency (LF). This work presents a LF control for a modern multi-area power system incorporating photovoltaic (PV) and EV chargers. The proposed controller primarily utilizes EV chargers within modern power systems. This approach offers the advantage of using the already present components instead of introducing new ones. The proposed controller comprises the ecological optimization approach (ECO) and the integral controller (I). Both of these components are designed for autonomous vehicle-to-grid (V2G) devices. The proposed control technique is applied to a three-area power system, where the V2G scheme is located in Area-1. Variations in the load, PV power generated, and system parameters are considered to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed (I+ECO+V2G) controller for controlling the LF. To assess the performance of the proposed I+ECO+V2G system, a comparative analysis is conducted to compare its performance with both the I+ECO system and the standard I-controller. The simulation findings demonstrate that implementing the I+ECO and the proposed I+ECO+V2G strategies results in enhanced system stability and decreased LF fluctuations compared to the conventional I-control approach. Furthermore, while comparing the I+ECO control technique to the suggested control strategy I+ECO+V2G, it was seen that the latter reaches steady state values more quickly. The results validate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed controller in mitigating the impacts of load disturbances, uncertainties, and nonlinearities within the system. These simulations were performed using MATLAB/SIMULINK. To validate the outcomes of the simulation results, an experimental setup consisting of a real-time dSPACE DS1103 connected to another PC via QUARC pid_e data acquisition card was used. The experimental findings have substantiated the accuracy of the simulation findings about the superiority of the I+ECO+V2G methodology compared to both the I+ECO and I-control methodologies concerning system performance and LF control.

An earthquake early warning system (EEWS) should be included in smart cities to preserve human lives by providing a reliable and efficient disaster management system. This system can alter how ...different entities communicate with one another using an Internet of Things (IoT) network where observed data are handled based on machine learning (ML) technology. On one hand, IoT is employed in observing the different measures of EEWS entities. On the other hand, ML can be exploited to analyze these measures to reach the best action to be taken for disaster management and risk mitigation in smart cities. This paper provides a survey on the different aspects required for that EEWS. First, the IoT system is generally discussed to provide the role it can play for EEWS. Second, ML models are classified into linear and non-linear ones. Third, the evaluation metrics of ML models are addressed by focusing on seismology. Fourth, this paper exhibits a taxonomy that includes the emerging ML and IoT efforts for EEWS. Fifth, it proposes a generic EEWS architecture based on IoT and ML. Finally, the paper addresses the application of ML for earthquake parameters’ observations leading to an efficient EEWS.
The prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increasing over time. CVD is a comorbidity in diabetes and contributes to premature death. Citrus flavonoids possess several biological activities ...and have emerged as efficient therapeutics for the treatment of CVD. Citrus flavonoids scavenge free radicals, improve glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, modulate lipid metabolism and adipocyte differentiation, suppress inflammation and apoptosis, and improve endothelial dysfunction. The intake of citrus flavonoids has been associated with improved cardiovascular outcomes. Although citrus flavonoids exerted multiple beneficial effects, their mechanisms of action are not completely established. In this review, we summarized recent findings and advances in understanding the mechanisms underlying the protective effects of citrus flavonoids against oxidative stress, inflammation, diabetes, dyslipidemia, endothelial dysfunction, and atherosclerosis. Further studies and clinical trials to assess the efficacy and to explore the underlying mechanism(s) of action of citrus flavonoids are recommended.
Liver injury is one of the adverse effects of methotrexate (MTX). Ferulic acid (FA) is an antioxidant phytochemical that confers hepatoprotective efficacy; however, its effect against MTX ...hepatotoxicity remains unexplored. This study investigated the role of FA in modulating oxidative stress, inflammation, Nrf2/HO-1 signaling, and PPARγ in MTX-administered rats. Following oral FA supplementation for 15 days, rats received a single dose of MTX at day 16 and samples were collected at day 19. MTX provoked multiple histological manifestations, including degenerative changes, steatosis, inflammatory cells infiltration and hemorrhage, and altered serum transaminases, bilirubin, and albumin. Reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation, and nitric oxide were increased in the liver of rats that received MTX. FA prevented all histological alterations, ameliorated liver function markers, suppressed oxidative stress, and boosted antioxidants in MTX-induced rats. FA reduced serum TNF-α and IL-1β, and hepatic NF-κB p65, Bax, and caspase-3, whereas increased Bcl-2, Nrf2, NQO1, HO-1, and PPARγ. In conclusion, FA prevented MTX hepatotoxicity by activating Nrf2/HO-1 signaling and PPARγ, and attenuating oxidative stress, inflammation, and cell death.
The earlier the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), the sooner disease-modifying treatments can be initiated. However, significant delays still occur in developing countries. We aimed to identify ...factors leading to delayed diagnosis of MS in Upper Egypt. One hundred forty-two patients with remitting relapsing MS (RRMS) were recruited from 3 MS units in Upper Egypt. Detailed demographic and clinical data were collected. Neurological examination and assessment of the Disability Status Scale (EDSS) were performed. The mean age was 33.52 ± 8.96 years with 72.5% of patients were females. The mean time from symptom onset to diagnosis was 18.63 ± 27.87 months and the median was 3 months. Seventy-two patients (50.7%) achieved diagnosis within three months after the first presenting symptom (early diagnosis), while seventy patients (49.3%) had more than three months delay in diagnosis (delayed diagnosis). Patients with a delayed diagnosis frequently presented in the period before 2019 and had a significantly higher rate of initial non-motor presentation, initial non-neurological consultations, prior misdiagnoses, and a higher relapse rate. Another possible factor was delayed MRI acquisition following the initial presentation in sixty-six (46.5%) patients. Multivariable logistic regression analysis demonstrated that earlier presentation, initial non-neurological consultation, and prior misdiagnosis were independent predictors of diagnostic delay. Despite advances in MS management in Egypt, initial non-neurological consultation and previous misdiagnoses are significant factors responsible for delayed diagnosis in Upper Egypt.
Background
There is a long-held concept among spine surgeons that endoscopic lumbar discectomy procedures are reserved for small-contained disc herniation; 8-year follow-up has not been reported. The ...purpose of this study is to assess microendoscopic discectomy (MED) in patients with large uncontained lumbar disc herniation (the antero-posterior diameter of the extruded fragment is 6–12 mm or more on axial cuts of MRI) and report long-term outcome.
Methods
One hundred eighty-five patients with MED or standard open discectomy underwent follow-up for 8 years. Primary (clinical) outcomes data included Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for back and leg symptoms and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) to quantify pain and disability, respectively. Secondary (objective) outcomes data included operative time, blood loss, postoperative analgesics, length of hospital stay, time to return to work, reoperation and complication rate, patient satisfaction index (PSI), and modified (MacNab) criteria.
Results
At the end of the follow-up, the leg pain relief was statistically significant for both groups. NRS back pain, ODI, PSI and MacNab criteria showed significant deterioration for control group. Secondary outcomes data of MED group were significantly better than the control group.
Conclusions
Large, uncontained, lumbar disc herniations can be sufficiently removed using MED which is an effective alternative to open discectomy procedures with remarkable long-term outcome. Although the neurological outcome of the two procedures is the same, the morbidity of MED is significantly less than open discectomy. Maximum benefit can be gained if we adhere to strict selection criteria. The optimum indication is single- or multi-level radiculopathy secondary to a single-level, large, uncontained, lumbar disc herniation.

Cardiovascular complications are considered one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among diabetic patients. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a type of cardiovascular ...damage presents in diabetic patients independent of the coexistence of ischemic heart disease or hypertension. It is characterized by impaired diastolic relaxation time, myocardial dilatation and hypertrophy and reduced systolic and diastolic functions of the left ventricle. Molecular mechanisms underlying these pathological changes in the diabetic heart are most likely multifactorial and include, but not limited to, oxidative/nitrosative stress, increased advanced glycation end products, mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation and cell death. The aim of this review is to address the major molecular mechanisms implicated in the pathogenesis of DCM. In addition, this review provides studies conducted to determine the pharmacological effects of (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the major polyphenol in green tea, focusing on its therapeutic potential against the processes involved in the pathogenesis and progression of DCM. EGCG has been shown to exert several potential therapeutic properties both in vitro and in vivo. Given its therapeutic potential, EGCG might be a promising drug candidate to decrease the morbidity and mortality associated with DCM and other diabetes complications.
The precision of the PV model greatly influences the simulation results to enhance the effectiveness of photovoltaic (PV) energy systems. The PV mathematical model is based on a remarkably nonlinear ...relationship of its I-V characteristic. The data sheets of overall PV cells do not supply complete information of its parameters. This leads to a nonlinear mathematical model of PV with numerous unknown parameters. Consequently, in this paper, a new application of an appropriate optimization algorithm called Chaos Game Optimization algorithm (CGO) is proposed for estimating the unknown parameters of the three-diode (TD) PV model. The simulation results are carried out for PV real cells and PV module which with varying the temperature and irradiation. The proposed model of the PV module is evaluated by matching its results with the actual PV modules experimental results. To confirm the performance of the CGO algorithm in extracting the parameters of the PV model, its results are compared with the most present and robust techniques results in the literature. The results show that the CGO algorithm attains the least Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), the mean and standard deviation as the best solution. In addition, CGO provides the smallest implementation time compared with the other investigated algorithms.
Egypt is among the world's largest producers of sugarcane. This crop is of great economic importance in the country, as it serves as a primary source of sugar, a vital strategic material. The ...pre-cutting planting mode is the most used technique for cultivating sugarcane in Egypt. However, this method is plagued by several issues that adversely affect the quality of the crop. A proposed solution to these problems is the implementation of a sugarcane-seed-cutting device, which incorporates automatic identification technology for optimal efficiency. The aim is to enhance the cutting quality and efficiency of the pre-cutting planting mode of sugarcane. The developed machine consists of a feeding system, a node scanning and detection system, a node cutting system, a sugarcane seed counting and monitoring system, and a control system. The current research aims to study the pulse widths (PW) of three-color channels (R, G, and B) of the RGB color sensors under laboratory conditions. The output PW of red, green, and blue channel values were recorded at three color types for hand-colored nodes black, red, and blue, three speeds of the feeding system 7.5 m/min, 5 m/min, and 4.3 m/min, three installing heights of the RGB color sensors 2.0 cm, 3.0 cm, and 4.0 cm, and three widths of the colored line 10.0 mm, 7.0 mm, and 3.0 mm. The laboratory test results s to identify hand-colored sugarcane nodes showed that the recognition rate ranged from 95% to 100% and the average scanning time ranged from 1.0 s to 1.75 s. The capacity of the developed machine ranged up to 1200 seeds per hour. The highest performance of the developed machine was 100% when using hand-colored sugarcane stalks with a 10 mm blue color line and installing the RGB color sensor at 2.0 cm in height, as well as increasing the speed of the feeding system to 7.5 m/min. The use of IoT and RGB color sensors has made it possible to get analytical indicators like those achieved with other automatic systems for cutting sugar cane seeds without requiring the use of computers or expensive, fast industrial cameras for image processing.
