Multibeam echosounders are widely used for 3D bathymetric mapping, and increasingly for water column studies. However, they rapidly collect huge volumes of data, which poses a challenge for water ...column data processing that is often still manual and time-consuming, or affected by low efficiency and high false detection rates if automated. This research describes a comprehensive and reproducible workflow that improves efficiency and reliability of target detection and classification, by calculating metrics for target cross-sections using a commercial software before feeding into a feature-based semi-supervised machine learning framework. The method is tested with data collected from an uncalibrated multibeam echosounder around an offshore gas platform in the Adriatic Sea. It resulted in more-efficient target detection, and, although uncertainties regarding user labelled training data need to be underlined, an accuracy of 98% in target classification was reached by using a final pre-trained stacking ensemble model.
Birds breeding on ocean beaches are threatened globally, often requiring significant investments in species conservation and habitat management. Conservation actions typically encompass spatial and ...temporal threat reductions and protection of eggs and broods. Still, populations decline or recover only slowly, calling for fresh approaches in beach-bird conservation.
Because energetic demands are critically high during the nesting and chick rearing phases, and chick survival is particularly low, supplementing prey to breeding birds and their offspring is theoretically attractive as a means to complement more traditional conservation measures.
Prey for plovers and similar species on ocean beaches consists of invertebrates (e.g. small crustaceans, insects) many of which feed on stranded masses of plant material (e.g. kelp and seagrass) and use this ‘wrack’ as habitat. We added wrack to the upper beach where plovers nest and their chicks forage to test whether algal subsidies promote the abundance and diversity of their invertebrate prey.
Adding wrack to the upper beach significantly increased the abundance and diversity of invertebrate prey items. At wrack subsidies greater than 50% of surface cover invertebrate assemblages became highly distinct compared with those that received smaller additions of wrack. Substantial (2–4 fold) increases in the abundance amphipods and isopods that are principal prey items for plovers drove these shifts.
This proof-of-concept study demonstrates the feasibility of food provisioning for birds on ocean shores. Whilst novel, it is practicable, inexpensive and does not introduce further restrictions or man-made structures. Thus, it can meaningfully add to the broader arsenal of conservation tools for threatened species that are wholly reliant on sandy beaches as breeding and foraging habitats.
Echosounders are widely used to quantify fish behavior, fish stocks, and zooplankton biomass. Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers have also been used to accurately measure currents in all of the ...world's major water bodies over the last 30 years. The present work evaluates the performance of a combined echosounder/ADCP system, the Nortek Signature100, for simultaneous biomass assessment and current profile data analysis.Due to its combined current profiling and scientific echosounding capabilities, the system is seeing increased usage in biomass flux applications, particularly in Antarctic krill research. However, capabilities of the system are still being studied and the present work aims to expand characterization of its performance. To that effect, a four month deployment was carried out by the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in the Mediterranean Sea with an up-looking Signature100 mounted atop the ALBATROSS mooring line. The line was at a total water depth of 2420 m and its top was approximately 370 m below the surface. Data show significant variations in scattering conditions between daytime and nighttime due to diel vertical migration (DVM), often unrelated to horizontal velocity fluctuations, highlighting not only the multiple frequency band capabilities of the system (up to 7 bands), but also the strength of the combined echosounder and current profiling functions. Echoview, a commercial software package for hydroacoustic data processing, was used to further explore the spatial and temporal patterns of the organisms observed in the echosounder data. A semi-automated technique was implemented to efficiently and objectively clean (e.g. remove interference generated by passing ship traffic), classify (e.g. based on relative frequency response or morphology), and characterize the narrow bandwidth and pulse compressed echosounder data by generating outputs that can contribute to the management and monitoring of aquatic resources.
