Studies concerning adjuvant systemic therapy and prognosis in male breast carcinoma (MBC) are limited. We aimed to evaluate outcome of the changing practices of adjuvant systemic treatment and ...survival in operable MBC patients over the last two decades. The medical records of 148 MBC patients followed between the years 1986 and 2009 at 7 cancer center were evaluated retrospectively. One hundred and eighteen operable non-metastatic patients had sufficient data were included the study. One hundred and eighteen operable MBC were found to be eligible. Median age was 60 (range 29–83) years. Thirty-two percent of the patients had T3-4 tumors. Half of the patients had axillary lymph node-positive disease. The proportion of positivity of estrogen receptor(ER), progesterone receptor (PgR), and HER2 status were 82.9, 75.8, and 23.4%, respectively. Only, 7 patients had triple negative (TN). Adjuvant hormonotherapy was advised for 76.8% whereas adjuvant chemotherapy for 73.7% of the patients. Median follow-up was 40.9 months (range 3.8–186 months). Locoregional and/or distant recurrence developed in thirty-eight patients (32.2%). Twenty-three patients died during the follow-up period. Five-year disease-free survival (DFS) was found to be 60%, whereas overall survival (OS) was 82%. Larger tumor size and lymph node positivity were statistically significant poor prognostic factors for OS. Although the frequency of the use of adjuvant systemic therapy in MBC has been increasing and survival rates improving for the last decades, lymph node status and tumor size are still the most important determining factors for prognosis. There is a need for further prognostic information in men with HER2-positive or TN breast cancer.
Metastatic stage gastric cancer is a disease with a poor prognosis and the likelihood of achieving a cure in these patients is low. Treatment response to subsequent-line treatments is poor. We aimed ...to investigate the effectiveness of the folinic acid, fluorouracil and irinotecan (FOLFIRI) and paclitaxel+carboplatin regimens, which are used in subsequent lines of therapy in advanced-stage gastric cancer.
This study included 40 patients who have metastatic stage gastric cancer and received FOLFIRI or paclitaxel+carboplatin therapy in subsequent lines of therapy between 2017 and 2022. The data of the patients were analyzed retrospectively.
At diagnosis median age was 51 (23-88) years. The tumor was localized in the gastroesophageal junction in eight (20%) patients and in other gastric locations in 32 (80%) patients. At diagnosis, 75% (n=30) of the patients presented with the disease in the metastatic stage, while 25% (n=10) presented with stage II-III disease. Regarding the treatments received in the second and further lines of therapy, 18 (45%) patients received paclitaxel+carboplatin and 22 (55%) patients received a FOLFIRI regimen. Of these treatments, 67.5% (n=27) were given as the second line and 32.5% (n=13) were given as third-line therapy. The objective response rate (ORR) was 45.5% in the FOLFIRI arm compared to 16.7% in the paclitaxel+carboplatin arm (p=0.05). Both treatment arms had a median progression-free survival (PFS) of three months (p=0.82). The median overall survival (OS) time was seven months in the FOLFIRI arm compared to eight months in the paclitaxel+carboplatin arm (p=0.71). Side effects were similar between both treatment arms.
This study determined that FOLFIRI and paclitaxel+carboplatin treatments have similar OS, PFS, and side effect profiles in subsequent line treatment of gastric cancer. The FOLFIRI treatment regimen yielded a higher ORR.
Cancer was a common noncommunicable disease in Syria before the present conflict and is now a major disease burden among 3.6 million Syrian refugees in Turkey. Data to inform health care practice are ...needed.
To explore sociodemographic characteristics, clinical characteristics, and treatment outcomes of Syrian patients with cancer residing in the southern border provinces of Turkey hosting more than 50% of refugees.
This was a retrospective hospital-based cross-sectional study. The study sample consisted of all adult and children Syrian refugees diagnosed and/or treated for cancer between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2020, in hematology-oncology departments of 8 university hospitals in the Southern province of Turkey. Data were analyzed from May 1, 2022, to September 30, 2022.
Demographic characteristics (date of birth, sex, and residence), date of first cancer-related symptom, date and place of diagnosis, disease status at first presentation, treatment modalities, date and status at last hospital visit, and date of death. The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision and International Classification of Childhood Cancers, Third Edition, were used for the classification of cancer. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results system was applied for staging. The diagnostic interval was defined as the number of days from first symptoms until the diagnosis. Treatment abandonment was documented if the patient did not attend the clinic within 4 weeks of a prescribed appointment throughout the treatment.
A total of 1114 Syrian adult and 421 Syrian children with cancer were included. The median age at diagnosis was 48.2 (IQR, 34.2-59.4) years for adults and 5.7 (IQR, 3.1-10.7) years for children. The median diagnostic interval was 66 (IQR, 26.5-114.3) days for adults and 28 (IQR, 14.0-69.0) days for children. Breast cancer (154 13.8%), leukemia and multiple myeloma (147 13.2%), and lymphoma (141 12.7%) were common among adults, and leukemias (180 42.8%), lymphomas (66 15.7%), and central nervous system neoplasms (40 9.5%) were common among children. The median follow-up time was 37.5 (IQR, 32.6-42.3) months for adults and 25.4 (IQR, 20.9-29.9) months for children. The 5-year survival rate was 17.5% in adults and 29.7% in children.
Despite universal health coverage and investment in the health care system, low survival rates were reported in this study for both adults and children with cancer. These findings suggest that cancer care in refugees requires novel planning within national cancer control programs with global cooperation.

One hundred and eighty patients with baseline SUVmax and 121 patients with SUVmax measurement after treatment were evaluated in the study. The baseline SUVmax value of the breast (SUVmaxBI) and axilla (SUVmaxAI) and the change in the SUVmax of the breast (ΔSUVmaxB) and axilla (ΔSUVmaxA) were measured. The optimal cut-off value of SUVmax and ΔSUVmax were determined by ROC curve analysis. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated using Kaplan–Meier curves.
ΔSUVmaxB, pCRB, pCRA, and pCR parameters were found to be associated with relapse (P < .001, P = .033, P = .016, and P = .013, respectively). En este estudio, se tuvo como objetivo determinar el papel pronóstico del valor de captación máximo estandarizado (SUVmáx) basal obtenido por PET/TC antes del tratamiento, y el cambio en el SUVmáx (ΔSUVmáx %) en pacientes con cáncer de mama con ganglios linfáticos axilares positivos que habían recibido quimioterapia neoadyuvante (NAC).
Se evaluaron en el estudio 180 pacientes con SUVmáx basal y 121 pacientes con medición de SUVmáx después del tratamiento. Se midieron el valor de SUVmáx inicial de la mama (SUVmáxBI) y axila (SUVmáxAI), y el cambio en el SUVmáx de la mama (ΔSUVmáxB) y axila (ΔSUVmáxA). El valor de corte óptimo de SUVmáx y ΔSUVmáx se determinó mediante el análisis de la curva ROC. La supervivencia libre de enfermedad (SLE) y la supervivencia global (SG) se calcularon mediante curvas de Kaplan-Meier.
Se encontró que los parámetros ΔSUVmáxB, pCRB, pCRA y pCR se asociaron con la recaída (P < .001, P = .033, P = .016 y P = .013, respectivamente). ΔSUVmáxB y SUVmáxAI se asociaron con la mortalidad (P = ,001 y P = ,006, respectivamente). El análisis de regresión de Cox múltiple reveló que el valor de ΔSUVmáxB era un factor pronóstico independiente para la recaída y la mortalidad (P = ,013 y P = ,010, respectivamente).
Los resultados muestran que ΔSUVmáxB es un factor pronóstico independiente de recaída y mortalidad en pacientes con cáncer de mama con ganglios linfáticos axilares positivos que recibieron NAC.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the prognostic factors of malignant pleural mesothelioma and the prognostic value of inflammation indices in malignant pleural mesothelioma.
Between January ...2002 and December 2019, a total of 132 patients (74 males, 58 females; mean age: 55 years; range, 31 to 79 years) diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma were retrospectively analyzed. Patients" demographic data and laboratory results were recorded. The prognostic value of the following five inflammation indices was evaluated: neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, advanced lung cancer inflammation index, C-reactive protein/albumin ratio, and prognostic nutritional index.
Of all patients, 81% (n=107) were aged 65 or older and 61.4% (n=81) had an epithelioid histology. Of 12 variables examined in the multivariate analysis for their relationship with survival, age ≥65 years, non-epithelioid subtype, and prognostic nutritional index <40 were found to be poor prognostic factors. Based on the score constructed from these factors, the good prognostic group (score 0-1) had a median overall survival of 21 months and a one-year survival rate of 77.9%, while the poor prognostic group (score 2-3) had a median overall survival of nine months and a one-year survival rate of 29.7%.
Our study results indicate that age ≥65 years, prognostic nutritional index <40, and non-epithelioid histological subtype are poor prognostic factors of malignant pleural mesothelioma.
Objective
Cytokines have been the mainstay of treatment in metastatic renal cell cancer (mRCC) for decades before the introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), which dramatically changed the ...therapeutic landscape in these patients. This observational study was designed to evaluate use of TKIs in the treatment of cytokine-intolerant mRCC patients.
Methods
A total of 151 cytokine-intolerant mRCC patients who were treated with TKIs (sunitinib, pazopanib and sorafenib) were enrolled in this prospective, non-interventional, multi-center observational study at 16 oncology centers across Turkey. Mean (SD) age was 61.3 (11.1) years and 74.8% were males. Data on duration of TKI treatment was the primary outcome measure. Additionally, overall response rate (ORR), progression free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) and safety data were recorded.
Results
Median duration of treatment was 8.2 months at a median follow up of 17.9 months. ORR and disease control rate were 12.5% and 70.8%, respectively. Median PFS and OS were 7.5 months (95%CI: 6.4–10.4) and 27.3 months (95%CI: 17.6–27.3) with no significant difference among three TKI agents in terms of treatment duration, ORR, PFS and OS. The most common adverse events excluding progression-which was the protocol requirement were diarrhea (13.6%), asthenia (13.6%) and hand-foot syndrome (12.6%). Dose modifications were required in 30.5% of the patients and 15% discontinued TKIs because of toxicity.
Conclusions
Our findings confirm the efficacy and safety profile of TKIs in the first-line treatment of mRCC patients intolerant to cytokine treatment. There was no significant difference among three TKI agents in terms of treatment duration, ORR, PFS and OS.

This study aimed to determine the epidemiological characteristics of colorectal cancer in Turkey.
In this multicenter, prospective, and cross-sectional registry study, data for 968 patients with ...colorectal cancer from 21 centers in 7 geographic regions were analyzed.
Diagnosis was colon cancer in 662 (68.4%) and rectum cancer in 306 (31.6%) patients. In total, 60.9% of patients was male; mean age was 58.9±12.6 years. Among patients, 15.0% was drinking alcohol, 17.5% was smoking, 1.5% had familial history of polyposis, 15.0% had diabetes mellitus, 1.0% had inflammatory bowel disease. Fruit and vegetable consumption was low (<3 times/week) in 35.5% and red meat consumption was high (≥3 times/week) in 47.4% of the patients. Median time-to diagnosis was 3.0 months and 4.0 months for patients with colon and rectum cancer, respectively. Mean body mass index was >25 in all group of patients. Distal rectum (61.3%) and sigmoid colon (36.8%) were the most common locations of cancer, for rectum and colon respectively. In total, 85.6% of patients were operated; 25.8% had emergency surgery. Low anterior resection rate was 64.2% in rectum cancer. In majority (89.8%) of the patients with rectum cancer who received preoperative treatment, conventional chemo-radiotherapy regimen was given. pTNM staging at diagnosis showed that stage III and IV patients were in majority (35.9% and 29.7%, respectively).
Colon cancer is more frequent than rectum cancer in Turkey. Colorectal cancer patients are diagnosed at later stages. Most of the cases were operated. Interregional differences for risk factors are worthwhile for evaluation in future trials.
