We discovered the chirality of charge-density waves (CDW) in 1T-TiSe₂ by using STM and time-domain optical polarimetry. We found that the CDW intensity becomes Ia₁∶Ia₂∶Ia₃ = 1∶0.7 ± 0.1∶0.5 ± 0.1, ...where Ia(i) (i=1,2,3) is the amplitude of the tunneling current contributed by the CDWs. There were two states, in which the three intensity peaks of the CDW decrease clockwise and anticlockwise. The chirality in CDW results in the threefold symmetry breaking. Macroscopically, twofold symmetry was indeed observed in optical measurement. We propose the new generalized CDW chirality H(CDW) ≡ q₁·(q₂×q₃), where q(i) are the CDW q vectors, which is independent of the symmetry of components. The nonzero H(CDW)-the triple-q vectors do not exist in an identical plane in the reciprocal space-should induce a real-space chirality in CDW system.
This paper describes the recent progress in divertor simulation research using the GAMMA 10/PDX tandem mirror towards the development of divertors in fusion reactors. During a plasma flow generation ...experiment in the end cell of the GAMMA 10/PDX, ICRF heating in the anchor cell successfully extended the particle flux up to 3.3 × 1023 m2 s−1. Superimposing the short pulse of the ECH also attained a maximum heat flux of ~30 MW m−2. We have succeeded in achieving and characterizing the detachment of the high-temperature plasma, which is equivalent to the SOL plasma of tokamaks, by using the divertor simulation experimental module (D-module) in the GAMMA 10/PDX end cell, in spite of using a linear device with a short magnetic field line connection length. Various gases (Ar, Xe, Ne and N2) are examined to evaluate the effect of radiation cooling against the plasma flow at the MW m−2 level in the divertor simulation region and the following results are obtained: (i) Xe gas was most effective in the reduction of heat and particle fluxes (1%, 3%, respectively) and has a stronger effect on electron cooling (down to ~1.6 eV) in the used gas species. (ii) Ne gas was less effective. On the other hand, (iii) N2 gas showed more favorable effects than Ar in the lower pressure range. These results will contribute to the progress in detached plasma operation and in clarifying the radiation cooling mechanism towards the development of future divertors.
The KamLAND experiment has determined a precise value for the neutrino oscillation parameter Deltam21(2) and stringent constraints on theta12. The exposure to nuclear reactor antineutrinos is ...increased almost fourfold over previous results to 2.44 x 10(32) proton yr due to longer livetime and an enlarged fiducial volume. An undistorted reactor nuovere energy spectrum is now rejected at >5sigma. Analysis of the reactor spectrum above the inverse beta decay energy threshold, and including geoneutrinos, gives a best fit at Deltam21(2)=7.58(-0.13)(+0.14)(stat) -0.15+0.15(syst) x 10(-5) eV2 and tan2theta12=0.56(-0.07)+0.10(stat) -0.06+0.10(syst). Local Deltachi2 minima at higher and lower Deltam21(2) are disfavored at >4sigma. Combining with solar neutrino data, we obtain Deltam21(2)=7.59(-0.21)+0.21 x 10(-5) eV2 and tan2theta12=0.47(-0.05)+0.06.
This paper describes the results of the experiments performed on Tandem Mirror device GAMMA 10/PDX mainly using a new “divertor simulation experimental module (D-module)” installed on one of the end ...mirror exits which is specially designed to investigate the physics of plasma detachment. The additional ICRF heating in the anchor-cells, connected to both ends of the central-cell, significantly increases the density in the both cells, which attained the generation of the highest particle flux up to 1023particles/sm2 at the end-mirror exit. H2 and noble gas injection to enhance the radiation cooling in D-module was performed and a remarkable reduction of the electron temperature (from few tens eV to <3eV) on the target plate were successfully achieved associated with the strong reduction of particle and heat flux. A significant effect of simultaneous injection with hydrogen and noble gases for detached plasma formation was recognized for the first time.
A search for dark matter was conducted by looking for an annual modulation signal due to the Earth's rotation around the Sun using XMASS, a single phase liquid xenon detector. The data used for this ...analysis was 359.2 live days times 832 kg of exposure accumulated between November 2013 and March 2015. When we assume Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter elastically scattering on the target nuclei, the exclusion upper limit of the WIMP–nucleon cross section 4.3×10−41 cm2 at 8 GeV/c2 was obtained and we exclude almost all the DAMA/LIBRA allowed region in the 6 to 16 GeV/c2 range at ∼10−40 cm2. The result of a simple modulation analysis, without assuming any specific dark matter model but including electron/γ events, showed a slight negative amplitude. The p-values obtained with two independent analyses are 0.014 and 0.068 for null hypothesis, respectively. We obtained 90% C.L. upper bounds that can be used to test various models. This is the first extensive annual modulation search probing this region with an exposure comparable to DAMA/LIBRA.
The whole-genome sequence of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) cv. 'Francesco' was determined using a combination of different new-generation multiplex sequencing platforms. The total length of ...the non-redundant sequences was 568,887,315 bp, consisting of 45,088 scaffolds, which covered 91% of the 622 Mb carnation genome estimated by k-mer analysis. The N50 values of contigs and scaffolds were 16,644 bp and 60,737 bp, respectively, and the longest scaffold was 1,287,144 bp. The average GC content of the contig sequences was 36%. A total of 1050, 13, 92 and 143 genes for tRNAs, rRNAs, snoRNA and miRNA, respectively, were identified in the assembled genomic sequences. For protein-encoding genes, 43 266 complete and partial gene structures excluding those in transposable elements were deduced. Gene coverage was ∼ 98%, as deduced from the coverage of the core eukaryotic genes. Intensive characterization of the assigned carnation genes and comparison with those of other plant species revealed characteristic features of the carnation genome. The results of this study will serve as a valuable resource for fundamental and applied research of carnation, especially for breeding new carnation varieties. A search for the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of 136Xe was conducted with the liquid-xenon detector XMASS-I using 327 kg ×800.0 days of the exposure. The pulse shape discrimination based on the ...scintillation decay time constant which distinguishes γ-rays including the signal and β-rays was used to enhance the search sensitivity. No significant signal excess was observed from the energy spectrum fitting with precise background evaluation, and we set a lower limit of the half life of 3.7 × 1024 years at 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental constraint of the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of 136Xe.
Abstract
This paper reports the development and detailed properties of about 13 metric tons of gadolinium sulfate octahydrate, $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$, which has been dissolved into ...Super-Kamiokande (SK) in the summer of 2020. We evaluate the impact of radioactive impurities in $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ on diffuse supernova neutrino background searches and solar neutrino observation and confirm the need to reduce radioactive and fluorescent impurities by about three orders of magnitude from commercially available high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$. In order to produce ultra-high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$, we have developed a method to remove impurities from gadolinium oxide, Gd2O3, consisting of acid dissolution, solvent extraction, and pH control processes, followed by a high-purity sulfation process. All of the produced ultra-high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ is assayed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and high-purity germanium detectors to evaluate its quality. Because of the long measurement time of high-purity germanium detectors, we have employed several underground laboratories for making parallel measurements including the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc in Spain, Boulby in the UK, and Kamioka in Japan. In the first half of production, the measured batch purities were found to be consistent with the specifications. However, in the latter half, the $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ contained one order of magnitude more 228Ra than the budgeted mean contamination. This was correlated with the corresponding characteristics of the raw material Gd2O3, in which an intrinsically large contamination was present. Based on their modest impact on SK physics, they were nevertheless introduced into the detector. To reduce 228Ra for the next stage of gadolinium loading to SK, a new process has been successfully established.
Abstract
The scintillation decay time constant of a ZnWO4 crystal irradiated with α-particles from 241Am was precisely investigated, and was found to depend on the incident direction of the ...α-particles on the crystal. The longest decay time constant (24.3 ± 0.6 μs) was obtained on the surface perpendicular to the b-axis of the crystal (surface B). On surfaces A and C, the decay constants were 20.0 and 21.3 ± 0.2 μs, respectively. The scintillation yield of ZnWO4 was also anisotropic and depended on the incident direction of the heavy particles. The maximum yield was achieved on surface B, suggesting a correlation between the light yield and the scintillation decay time constant of ZnWO4 crystals.
