ABSTRACT
We combine observations from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), Australia Telescope Compact Array, Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), and Herschel to study ...gas-to-dust ratios in 15 Fornax cluster galaxies detected in the FIR/sub-mm by Herschel and observed by ALMA as part of the ALMA Fornax Cluster Survey. The sample spans a stellar mass range of 8.3 ≤ log(M⋆/M⊙) ≤ 11.16, and a variety of morphological types. We use gas-phase metallicities derived from MUSE observations (from the Fornax3D survey) to study these ratios as a function of metallicity, and to study dust-to-metal ratios, in a sub-sample of nine galaxies. We find that gas-to-dust ratios in Fornax galaxies are systematically lower than those in field galaxies at fixed stellar mass/metallicity. This implies that a relatively large fraction of the metals in these Fornax systems is locked up in dust, which is possibly due to altered chemical evolution as a result of the dense environment. The low ratios are not only driven by H i deficiencies, but H2-to-dust ratios are also significantly decreased. This is different in the Virgo cluster, where low gas-to-dust ratios inside the virial radius are driven by low H i-to-dust ratios, while H2-to-dust ratios are increased. Resolved observations of NGC 1436 show a radial increase in H2-to-dust ratio, and show that low ratios are present throughout the disc. We propose various explanations for the low H2-to-dust ratios in the Fornax cluster, including the more efficient stripping of H2 compared to dust, more efficient enrichment of dust in the star formation process, and altered interstellar medium physics in the cluster environment.
Abstract
The aim of the paper is to propose design tools for pile groups when vertical and moment loads are applied simultaneously. This is done by presenting a method to derive the exact solution ...for the failure locus in the generalized force space, including a vertical load and a moment with components along two axes, to employ for capacity requirements which helps to get rid of overconservative assumptions usually adopted in design. Moreover, closed-form solutions for performance-based interaction domains are also provided allowing to detect all the combinations of external loads associated with a given value of settlement and/or rotation of the foundation that is extremely useful when the design is ruled by serviceability requirements. The application of these straightforward formulae provides results which are in very good agreement with the more rigorous solutions derived from a numerical procedure developed ad hoc for the problem at hand.
Pregnancy is characterized by a delicate immune balance; therefore, infectious diseases might increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs). Here, we hypothesize that pyroptosis, a unique ...cell death pathway mediated by the NLRP3 inflammasome, could link SARS-CoV-2 infection, inflammation, and APOs. Two blood samples were collected from 231 pregnant women at 11-13 weeks of gestation and in the perinatal period. At each time point, SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and neutralizing antibody titers were measured by ELISA and microneutralization (MN) assays, respectively. Plasmatic NLRP3 was determined by ELISA. Fourteen miRNAs selected for their role in inflammation and/or pregnancy were quantified by qPCR and further investigated by miRNA-gene target analysis. NLRP3 levels were positively associated with nine circulating miRNAs, of which miR-195-5p was increased only in MN+ women (
-value = 0.017). Pre-eclampsia was associated with a decrease in miR-106a-5p (
-value = 0.050). miR-106a-5p (
-value = 0.026) and miR-210-3p (
-value = 0.035) were increased in women with gestational diabetes. Women giving birth to small for gestational age babies had lower miR-106a-5p and miR-21-5p (
-values = 0.001 and 0.036, respectively), and higher miR-155-5p levels (
-value = 0.008). We also observed that neutralizing antibodies and NLRP3 concentrations could affect the association between APOs and miRNAs. Our findings suggest for the first time a possible link between COVID-19, NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis, inflammation, and APOs. Circulating miRNAs might be suitable candidates to gain a comprehensive view of this complex interplay.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a predominant malignancy with increasing incidences and mortalities worldwide. In Western countries, the progressive affirmation of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease ...(NAFLD) as the main chronic liver disorder in which HCC occurrence is appreciable even in non-cirrhotic stages, constitutes a real health emergency. In light of this, a further comprehension of molecular pathways supporting HCC onset and progression represents a current research challenge to achieve more tailored prognostic models and appropriate therapeutic approaches. RNA non-coding transcripts (ncRNAs) are involved in the regulation of several cancer-related processes, including HCC. When dysregulated, these molecules, conventionally classified as “small ncRNAs” (sncRNAs) and “long ncRNAs” (lncRNAs) have been reported to markedly influence HCC-related progression mechanisms. In this review, we describe the main dysregulated ncRNAs and the relative molecular pathways involved in HCC progression, analyzing their implications in certain etiologically related contexts, and their applicability in clinical practice as novel diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic tools. Finally, given the growing evidence supporting the immune system response, the oxidative stress-regulated mechanisms, and the gut microbiota composition as relevant emerging elements mutually influencing liver-cancerogenesis processes, we investigate the relationship of ncRNAs with this triad, shedding light on novel pathogenetic frontiers of HCC progression.
Immunotherapy has emerged as a pivotal component in the treatment of various malignancies, encompassing lung, skin, gastrointestinal, and head and neck cancers. The foundation of this therapeutic ...approach lies in immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). While ICIs have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in impeding the neoplastic progression of these tumours, their use may give rise to substantial toxicity, notably in the gastrointestinal domain, where ICI colitis constitutes a significant aspect. The optimal positioning of Janus kinase (JAK)-signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathway inhibitors in the therapeutic management of ICI colitis remains unclear. Numerous reports have highlighted notable improvements in ICI colitis through the application of pan-JAK-STAT inhibitors, with tofacitinib, in particular, reporting evident clinical remission of colitis. The precise mechanism by which JAK-STAT inhibitors may impact the pathogenetic process of ICI colitis remains inadequately understood. However, there is speculation regarding their potential role in modulating memory resident CD8
T lymphocytes. The elucidation of this mechanism requires further extensive and robust evidence, and ongoing JAK-STAT-based trials are anticipated to contribute valuable insights.
This article aims to present an evaluation of the environmental performance of a combustion polygeneration plant fed with lignocellulosic material from cardoon (Cynara cardunculus L.) through the ...technique of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The system boundaries encompassed macro-phases of crop production, transportation, and polygeneration processes that were able to produce 100 kW of electricity, a residual thermal energy recovery system and district heating and cooling with 270 kW of heating, and a 140 kW of cooling. The LCA was performed using Cumulative Energy Demand and ReCiPe Life Cycle Impact Assessment methods through midpoint and endpoint indicators. From 2000 h/year, 165.92 GJ of electricity and 667.23 GJ of primary energy were consumed, and 32.82 tCO2eq were emitted. The rates of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) and energy demand per MJ produced were 0.08 MJSE/MJPD, 0.30 MJPE/MJPD, and 0.01 kgCO2eq/MJPD. According to the ReCiPe method, the impact categories with the highest impact loads were Terrestrial ecotoxicity (2.44%), Freshwater ecotoxicity (32.21%), Marine ecotoxicity (50.10%), Human carcinogenic toxicity (8.75%), and Human non-carcinogenic toxicity (4.76%). Comparing the same energy outputs produced by Italian power and gas grids, the proposed polygeneration plant was able to reduce primary energy demand and GHG emissions by 80 and 81%, respectively, in addition to reducing the emissions of the five main categories of impacts by between 25 and 73%.
The objective of this study is to assess the genetic distribution of Charcot‐Marie‐Tooth (CMT) disease in Campania, a region of Southern Italy. We analyzed a cohort of 197 index cases and reported ...the type and frequency of mutations for the whole CMT population and for each electrophysiological group (CMT1, CMT2, and hereditary neuropathy with susceptibility to pressure palsies HNPP) and for familial and isolated CMT cases. Genetic diagnosis was achieved in 148 patients (75.1%) with a higher success rate in HNPP and CMT1 than CMT2. Only four genes (PMP22, GJB1, MPZ, and GDAP1) accounted for 92% of all genetically confirmed CMT cases. In CMT1, PMP22 duplication was the most common mutation while the second gene in order of frequency was MPZ in familial and SH3TC2 in isolated cases. In CMT2, GJB1 was the most frequent mutated gene and GJB1 with GDAP1 accounted for almost 3/4 of genetically defined CMT2 patients. The first gene in order of frequency was GJB1 in familial and GDAP1 in isolated cases. In HNPP, the majority of patients harbored the PMP22 gene deletion. The novelty of our data is the relatively high frequency of SH3TC2 and GDAP1 mutations in demyelinating and axonal forms, respectively. These epidemiological data can help in panel design for our patients' population.
Here, we report on accurate transmission measurements of electrons below 1 keV through suspended monolayer graphene. Monolayer graphene was grown via chemical vapor deposition and transferred onto ...transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grids. A monochromatic electron gun has been employed to perform the measurements in the 30 – 900 eV range in ultra-high vacuum. The graphene transparency is obtained from the absolute measurement of the direct beam current and the transmitted one, by means of a Faraday cup. We observed a transmission going from ∼20 to ∼80% for monolayer graphene within the experimental electron energy range. The high quality and the grid coverage of the suspended graphene has been proved via micro-Raman, X-ray photoemission, electron energy loss spectroscopies and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. After a 550 °C in-vacuum annealing of the samples, the main contribution to the C 1s spectrum is due to the sp2 component and the evidence of suspended monolayer graphene has been observed through the π-plasmon excitation.

Assessment of laparoscopic bowel shaving, discoid excision, or segmental resection for the treatment of RSE.
The 392 patients were divided into 3 groups according to surgical technique: shaving (n = 297; 75.8%), discoid excision (n = 33; 8.4%), and segmental resection (n = 62; 15.8%). Preoperative characteristics, surgical data, short- and long-term complications, and rates of proven and suspected recurrence were assessed. The segmental resection group had a higher rate of short-term complications compared with the discoid and shaving groups (17.7% vs 9.1% vs 5.4%, respectively; p = .004). The median follow-up time was 43 months (range, 12-163 months). Suspected and proven RSE recurrence rates showed no statistically significant differences among the 3 groups. There also were no significant differences concerning the rate of de novo chronic constipation and urinary retention.
To date, there is no consensus regarding the choice between radical (segmental resection) or conservative (shaving, discoid excision) surgical management for RSE, particularly for patients with preoperative intermediate risk of bowel segmental resection (the gray zone). Our data suggest that conservative surgery is preferred over radical surgery in patients with RSE in the gray zone risk category, resulting in similar suspected and proven RSE recurrence rates and associated with fewer short-term complications.
Studies have shown that the pandemic has led to an increase in sick leave periods among healthcare workers (HCWs); however, this might have changed over time considering increase in vaccination ...coverage and change in COVID-19 variant predominance. Therefore, we conducted an observational study to evaluate whether the type of symptoms and the duration of sick leave period for healthcare workers working in a large university hospital in the South of Italy changed between January 2021 and January 2022; 398 cases of COVID-19 were identified for a total of 382 subjects involved. A total of 191 subjects answered the questionnaire about symptoms; of these, 79 had COVID-19 during the period from March 2020 until February 2022. The results showed a decrease of about 1.2 days in sick leave period for each quarter without finding significant differences in the perception of symptoms. It is possible to hypothesize a contribution from the Omicron variant to the decrease in sick leave period in the last quarter, from vaccination coverage, from optimization of COVID-19 management, and from change in the regulations for the assessment of positivity.
