Background
Management of postoperative chylothorax usually consists of nutritional regimens, pharmacological therapies such as octreotide, and surgical therapies such as ligation of thoracic duct, ...but a clear consensus is yet to be reached. Further, the variation of the thoracic duct makes chylothorax difficult to treat. This report describes a rare case of chylothorax with an aberrant thoracic duct that was successfully treated using focal pleurodesis through interventional radiology (IVR).
Case presentation
The patient was a 52-year-old man with chylothorax after a thoracoscopic oesophagectomy for oesophageal cancer. With conventional therapy, such as thoracostomy tube, octreotide or fibrogammin, a decrease in the amount of chyle was not achieved. Therefore, we performed lymphangiography and pleurodesis through IVR. The patient appeared to have an aberrant thoracic duct, as revealed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); however, after focal pleurodesis, the leak of chyle was diminished, and the patient was discharged 66 days after admission.
Conclusions
Chylothorax remains a difficult complication. Focal pleurodesis through IVR can be one of the options to treat chylothorax.
The impressions of traditional Japanese crafts retrieved by a presentation system adopting the Kansei method were evaluated in a questionnaire survey. By analyzing the survey results, we associated ...the visual features of the traditional crafts with the Kansei words. Kansei means sensibility and the ability to accept the impression. In addition, we extracted a feature quantity of the traditional crafts, called the visual pattern image coding, from the traditional craft image, and associated this physical feature with the visual features of the traditional crafts. From these analyses, we implemented an augmented reality (AR) Traditional Japanese Craft Presentation System using the Kansei retrieval method. To evaluate the effectiveness of the Kansei retrieval method, we investigated the satisfaction levels of the retrieved results of traditional crafts. The subjects’ responses to the AR Traditional Japanese Craft Presentation System were overwhelmingly positive.
In this research, we propose and evaluate a decision support system using an interactive large-scale high-resolution display. This decision support system supports the summarization and ...decision-making of a large amount of disaster information during the occurrence of a large-scale natural disaster. Municipal employees at the disaster control headquarters can display disaster information on the large-scale display with a touch or flick on a laptop or tablet. To evaluate the operability, readability, functionality, and necessity of the decision support system, we surveyed 23 municipal employees in the disaster prevention division using a questionnaire. The system received a great evaluation in all the evaluation items.
Traditional crafts such as tategu (door and window fittings), kimono (clothes), and shikki (lacquerware) are regarded as important items for daily life in Japan; however, in recent years, the ...industry that manufactures and sells these products has experienced various problems and has continued to decline. Conversely, overseas demand for traditional crafts has been gradually increasing with the increase in foreign visitors to Japan in recent years. For these reasons, there is a need in the traditional crafts industry to provide information and promote traditional crafts to overseas customers. Accordingly, in this study, we implement a high presence traditional crafts experience system using virtual reality technology. Our proposed system provides users with a highly realistic virtual space experience using a head-mounted display and a data glove. In addition, multiple users can share the space via the network. Further, we consider the promotion of traditional crafts to overseas customers by combining multicultural architectural styles and Japanese culture.

This research has developed a teleimmersion homecoming support system for inpatients and their families by combining a head-mounted display, a 360-degree camera, and a remote control robot. This ...system realizes real-time remote communication between inpatients and their families and provides inpatients with a “homecoming” feeling. Furthermore, inpatients can experience a realistic home space by operating the remote control robot with a 360-degree camera installed at home and enjoying family conversations with the voice call function. To evaluate this system, we conducted a questionnaire survey on the operability, necessity, functionality, and presence of this system. More than 80% of the subjects answered positively in the evaluation of the necessity, functionality, and presence of this system. However, in the operability evaluation, 30% of the subjects answered negatively, so it is necessary to improve the operability in the future.
This research implements a visualization and analysis system for historical disaster records. This system consists of a storage system and a presentation system for saving and visualizing the ...disaster information, respectively. In an evaluation experiment, we assessed the operability, readability, necessity, functionality, effectiveness, and applicability of the visualization and analysis system in accessing and visualizing disaster records. The system was evaluated by 18 local government staff. The evaluation was rated highly in many items, but several functionalities, such as “strengthen system cooperation with external applications”, “enhance the stored disaster information”, “enhance the visualization information”, and “cooperate with a map of social media information”, will be introduced and/or extended in future work.
In this study, we implemented and evaluated a local knowledge inheritance system using old maps and location-based augmented reality (AR) technology. This system is comprised of a mobile local ...knowledge inheritance application and a local knowledge inheritance data management system. This system provides local knowledge to users using a map axis and location-based AR on mobile terminals. The map axis clarifies the relevance associated with the times and themes in local knowledge. We conducted an evaluation experiment with 47 local residents. The results confirm the effectiveness of the system relative to improving understanding of local knowledge and the effectiveness of using museum materials.
Abstract Background Acute cerebellitis with unilateral onset is rare, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a useful method for demonstrating cerebellar involvement. Patient We report a 12-year-old ...girl with acute cerebellitis with a unique sequential change on her MRI. Results The patient's brain MRI first revealed cortical lesions mainly in the right cerebellar hemisphere. These subsequently disappeared, and at the same time, new lesions appeared in the opposite cerebellar hemisphere. All the lesions were confined to gray matter in the cerebellum and were isotense on diffusion-weighted imaging and had high signal intensity on the apparent diffusion coefficient map, consistent with the characteristic of vasogenic edema. Conclusion The sequential MRI demonstrates conversion of hemicerebellitis to bilateral cerebellitis during subacute phase, and vasogenic edema might be contributing to the pathogenesis of acute cerebellitis in this patient.
This study develops an interactive information sharing system for disaster measure operations, called “HyperRem.” It consists of the HyperRem-Master and the HyperRem-Node. The HyperRem-Master ...aggregates information held by meeting participants and visualizes it on a large display. The HyperRem-Node transmits information to the HyperRem-Master by flicking operation from mobile terminals and laptops owned by meeting participants. HyperRem saves screen states visualized on a large display to a database in chronological order, and the saved screen states can be reused. A reuse function and a playback function are implemented to reuse past screen states. The reuse function enables users to resume meetings by restoring past meeting contents to the large display. The playback function provides a review function for past meetings to absentees via a dedicated web page. The operability, functionality, effectiveness, and applicability of HyperRem were confirmed in an evaluation experiment with 10 subjects. The survey results of all five measures revealed an overwhelmingly positive response.
In cooperation with a cable television program, we constructed an augmented reality (AR) system for the presentation of historical materials. We proposed a new media-fusion system called the ...historical materials’ presentation AR system, which integrates digital archives, AR technologies, and television programs. The proposed system consists of a mobile application and an AR-contents’ management system. The mobile application provides the user with historical museum materials in the form of AR contents and voice guidance. This application consists of the top screen, the AR-content acquisition screen, and the map screen. Meanwhile, the AR-content management system manages the AR contents and voice guidance provided to the user. This management system is a data management Web application for registering, editing, and deleting AR contents and the voice guidance used in the mobile application. The operability, necessity, and functionality of the historical materials’ presentation AR system were evaluated in a questionnaire survey of 45 subjects. All items were highly rated by the respondents.
