Projecting a vision for space radiobiological research necessitates understanding the nature of the space radiation environment and how radiation risks influence mission planning, timelines and ...operational decisions. Exposure to space radiation increases the risks of astronauts developing cancer, experiencing central nervous system (CNS) decrements, exhibiting degenerative tissue effects or developing acute radiation syndrome. One or more of these deleterious health effects could develop during future multi-year space exploration missions beyond low Earth orbit (LEO). Shielding is an effective countermeasure against solar particle events (SPEs), but is ineffective in protecting crew members from the biological impacts of fast moving, highly-charged galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) nuclei. Astronauts traveling on a protracted voyage to Mars may be exposed to SPE radiation events, overlaid on a more predictable flux of GCR. Therefore, ground-based research studies employing model organisms seeking to accurately mimic the biological effects of the space radiation environment must concatenate exposures to both proton and heavy ion sources. New techniques in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and other "omics" areas should also be intelligently employed and correlated with phenotypic observations. This approach will more precisely elucidate the effects of space radiation on human physiology and aid in developing personalized radiological countermeasures for astronauts.
Orbital decay by gravitational-wave radiation will cause some close-binary white dwarfs (WDs) to merge within a Hubble time. The results from previous hydrodynamical WD-merger simulations have been ...used to guide calculations of the post-merger evolution of carbon–oxygen + helium (CO+He) WD binaries. Our models include the formation of a hot corona in addition to a Keplerian disc. We introduce a ‘destroyed-disc’ model to simulate the effect of direct disc ingestion into the expanding envelope. These calculations indicate significant lifetimes in the domain of the rare R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars, before a fast evolution through the domain of the hotter extreme helium (EHe) stars. Surface chemistries of the resulting giants are in partial agreement with the observed abundances of RCB and EHe stars. The production of 3He, 18O and 19F are discussed. Evolutionary time-scales combined with binary WD merger rates from binary-star population synthesis are consistent with present-day numbers of RCBs and EHes, provided that the majority come from relatively recent (<2 Gyr) star formation. However, most RCBs should be produced by CO-WD + low-mass He-WD mergers, with the He WD having a mass in the range 0.20–0.35 M⊙. Whilst, previously, a high He-WD mass (≥0.40 M⊙) was required to match the carbon-rich abundances of RCB stars, the ‘destroyed-disc’ model yields a high-carbon product with He-WD mass ≥0.30 M⊙, in better agreement with population synthesis results.

ABSTRACT
Following the discovery of blue large-amplitude pulsators (BLAPs) by the OGLE survey, additional hot, high-amplitude pulsating stars have been discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility. It ...has been proposed that all of these objects are low-mass pre-white dwarfs and that their pulsations are driven by the opacity of iron-group elements. With this expanded population of pulsating objects, it was decided to compute a sequence of post-common-envelope stellar models using the mesa stellar evolution code and to examine the pulsation properties of low-mass pre-white dwarfs using non-adiabatic analysis with the gyre stellar oscillation code. By including the effects of atomic diffusion and radiative levitation, it is shown that a large region of instability exists from effective temperatures of 30 000 K up to temperatures of at least 50 000 K and at a wide range of surface gravities. This encompasses both groups of pulsator observed so far, and confirms that the driving mechanism is through iron group element opacity. We make some conservative estimates about the range of periods, masses, temperatures, and gravities in which further such pulsators might be observed.
Dysphagia is one consequence of head and neck cancer that has a significant impact on quality of life for head and neck cancer survivors. While survival rates continue to improve, focus has shifted ...to maximizing long-term function, with prevention or prehabilitation programs becoming more common. Prehabilitation programs typically include an exercise regime that specifies the exercise type, the number of repetitions to complete per set, the number of sets of each exercise to complete per day, as well as the length of the treatment block. Ideally, exercise programs are designed with principles of neuromuscular plasticity in mind.
Twenty-nine original research articles published between 2006 and 2020 were included in this state-of-the-art review and examined for program timing and details.
Two definitions for prehabilitation were noted: one third of the studies defined prehabilitation as preventative exercises prior to the start of acute cancer treatment; the remaining two thirds defined prehabilitation as treatment concurrent prehabilitation. Exercises prescribed ranged from general stretching and range of motion exercises, to trismus and swallowing specific exercises. The most common swallowing specific exercise was the Mendelsohn's maneuver, followed by the effortful swallow, Shaker, and Masako maneuver. The most common dose was 10 repetitions of an exercise, three times per day for the duration of radiation therapy. The most common measures were questionnaires, followed by g-tube dependence, mouth opening, and MBS reports.
This review of the literature has shed light on the variability of prehabilitation timing, exercise type, dose, duration of treatment, and outcomes associated with prehabilitation, making the selection of an optimal prehabilitation program difficult at this time.
Abstract Biomaterials are employed in the fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TERM) in order to enhance the regeneration or replacement of tissue function and/or structure. The ...unique environments resulting from the presence of biomaterials, cells, and tissues result in distinct challenges in regards to monitoring and assessing the results of these interventions. Imaging technologies for three-dimensional (3D) analysis have been identified as a strategic priority in TERM research. Traditionally, histological and immunohistochemical techniques have been used to evaluate engineered tissues. However, these methods do not allow for an accurate volume assessment, are invasive, and do not provide information on functional status. Imaging techniques are needed that enable non-destructive, longitudinal, quantitative, and three-dimensional analysis of TERM strategies. This review focuses on evaluating the application of available imaging modalities for assessment of biomaterials and tissue in TERM applications. Included is a discussion of limitations of these techniques and identification of areas for further development.

Blue large-amplitude pulsators (BLAPs) are hot low-mass stars that show large-amplitude light variations likely due to radial oscillations driven by iron group opacities. Period changes ...provide evidence of both secular contraction and expansion among the class. Various formation histories have been proposed, but none are completely satisfactory. Zhang et al. proposed that the merger of a helium-core white dwarf with a low-mass main-sequence star (HeWD+MS) can lead to the formation of some classes of hot subdwarfs. We have analyzed these HeWD+MS merger models in more detail. Between helium-shell ignition and full helium-core burning, the models pass through the volume of luminosity–gravity–temperature space occupied by BLAPs. Periods of expansion and contraction associated with helium-shell flashes can account for the observed rates of period change. We argue that the HeWD+MS merger model provides at least one BLAP formation channel.
Abstract
The discovery of extremely zirconium- and lead-rich surfaces amongst a small subgroup of hot subdwarfs has provoked questions pertaining to chemical peculiarity in hot star atmospheres and ...about their evolutionary origin. With only three known in 2014, a limited search for additional ‘heavy-metal’ subdwarfs was initiated with the Subaru telescope. Five hot subdwarfs having intermediate to high surface enrichment of helium were observed at high-resolution and analyzed for surface properties and abundances. This paper reports the analyses of four of these stars. PG 1559+048 and FBS 1749+373, having only intermediate helium enrichment, show strong lines of triply ionized lead. PG 1559+048 also shows a strong overabundance of germanium and yttrium. With more helium-rich surfaces, Ton 414 and J17554+5012, do not show evidence of heavy-metal enrichment. This limited survey suggests that extreme enrichment of ‘heavy metals’ by selective radiative levitation in hot subdwarf atmospheres is suppressed if the star is too helium-rich.
Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are the most common cause of blindness in working-age adults. Macular neovascularization (MNV) may be a presenting feature or occurs as a late-stage complication in ...several IRDs. We performed an extensive literature review on MNV associated with IRDs. MNV is a well-known complication of Sorsby fundus dystrophy and pseudoxanthoma elasticum. Those with late-onset Stargardt disease may masquerade as exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) when MNV is the presenting feature. Peripherinopathies may develop MNV that responds well to a short course of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy, while bestrophinopathies tend to develop MNV in the early stages of the disease without vision loss. Enhanced S-cone syndrome manifests type 3 MNV that typically regresses into a subfoveal fibrotic nodule. MNV is only a rare complication in choroideraemia and rod-cone dystrophies. Most IRD-related MNVs exhibit a favorable visual prognosis requiring less intensive regimens of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy compared to age-related macular degeneration. We discuss the role of key imaging modalities in the diagnosis of MNV across a wide spectrum of IRDs and highlight the gaps in our knowledge with respect to the natural history and prognosis to pave the way for future directions of research.
