Abstract
Expression Atlas is EMBL-EBI’s resource for gene and protein expression. It sources and compiles data on the abundance and localisation of RNA and proteins in various biological systems and ...contexts and provides open access to this data for the research community. With the increased availability of single cell RNA-Seq datasets in the public archives, we have now extended Expression Atlas with a new added-value service to display gene expression in single cells. Single Cell Expression Atlas was launched in 2018 and currently includes 123 single cell RNA-Seq studies from 12 species. The website can be searched by genes within or across species to reveal experiments, tissues and cell types where this gene is expressed or under which conditions it is a marker gene. Within each study, cells can be visualized using a pre-calculated t-SNE plot and can be coloured by different features or by cell clusters based on gene expression. Within each experiment, there are links to downloadable files, such as RNA quantification matrices, clustering results, reports on protocols and associated metadata, such as assigned cell types.
For Parkinson disease (PD) patients who have been diagnosed with advanced disease that can no longer be effectively controlled with optimized oral or transdermal medications, a range of device-aided ...therapies (DAT) are available, comprising either deep brain stimulation or infusion therapies providing continuous dopaminergic stimulation. Levodopa-entacapone-carbidopa intestinal gel (LECIG) infusion is the latest DAT for advanced PD (APD) that was approved in Romania in 2021.
What is the experience to date in real-world clinical practice in Romania regarding the efficacy and tolerability of LECIG in APD?
A retrospective evaluation of 74 APD patients treated with LECIG at 12 specialized APD centers in Romania.
Demographic data and various clinical parameters were recorded, including Mini Mental State Evaluation score or Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test score. Levodopa-equivalent daily dose and the administered doses of levodopa and other PD medications were evaluated at baseline and after starting LECIG treatment. The efficacy of LECIG in reducing daily hours of off time, motor fluctuations, and dyskinesias were assessed. Any percutaneous endoscopic gastrojejunostomy system or device complications after starting LECIG treatment were noted.
At baseline, patients were taking oral levodopa for a mean of 5.3 times per day, with a high proportion also taking concomitant add-on therapies (dopamine agonists, 86%, monoamine oxidase type-B inhibitors, 53%; catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitors, 64%). LECIG treatment significantly reduced daily off time versus baseline from 5.7 h/d to 1.7 hours per day ( P < 0.01). Duration and severity of dyskinesias was also significantly reduced versus baseline, and improvements were observed in Hoehn and Yahr Scale scores. LECIG treatment also allowed a significant reduction in the use of concomitant oral medications.
These findings suggest that LECIG treatment is an effective DAT option in APD that can simplify the treatment regimen.
: The adult superficial middle cerebral vein (SMCV) commonly drains into the middle cranial fossa. However, different embryonic types persist, in which the SMCV drains into the lateral sinus. The ...basal type of SMCV coursing on the middle fossa floor is a scarce variant.
: During a retrospective study of archived computed tomography angiography (CTA) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) files, three rare adult cases of the basal or sphenopetrosal type of SMCV were found and further documented.
: In the first case, which was evaluated via CTA, the basal type of SMCV formed a sagittal loop. It continued on the middle fossa floor, over a dehiscent tegmen tympani, to drain into the lateral sinus. In the second case, documented via MRA, the basal type of SMCV's anterior loop was in the coronal plane and closely related to the internal carotid artery and the cavernous sinus. It continued with the basal segment over a dehiscent glenoid fossa of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). In the third case, documented via CTA, the initial cerebral part of the SMCV had a large fenestration. The middle fossa floor coursed within a well-configured sulcus of the SMCV and received a tributary through the tympanic roof. Its terminal had a tentorial course.
: Beyond the fact that such rare variants of the SMCV can unexpectedly interfere with specific approaches via the middle fossa, dehiscences of the middle fossa floor beneath such variants can determine otic or TMJ symptoms. Possible loops and fenestrations of the SMCV should be considered and documented preoperatively.
An uncommon anatomical variant of muscle that can be considered as a supernumerary extensor carpi radialis muscle was found during the dissection of the forearm region. The identified extensor carpi ...radialis muscle has origin on the lateral supraepicondylar ridge of the humerus, and an unusual insertion on the tubercle of the scaphoid bone. The presence of this supernumerary muscle may cause diagnostic errors in the forearm region, and can produce a debilitating pain syndrome by secondary compression of adjacent nerves, vessels or tendons due to its course along the anterior compartment of the forearm.
An unusual muscle was discovered during the dissection of the presternal and pectoral regions, which, according to Jelev classification, can be considered a sternalis muscle. The identified right ...sternalis muscle has a common origin with the sternal head of the right sternocleidomastoid muscle and then splits in two bellies, the right one, much longer, which inserts on the right 2nd-5th costal cartilages, and the left one which inserts on the 2nd-3th left sternocostal joints. The sternalis muscle was associated with a very poor developed right transversus thoracis muscle. The study is important for the anatomists and more important for the clinicians, as this muscle's presence may cause diagnostic errors in the pectoral region.

Although, globally, both parasites are highly prevalent, particularly in developing countries, epidemiological data from Romania are scarce, and genotyping has rarely been performed. The aims of the present study were to investigate the occurrence and genetic diversity of

spp. in patients hospitalized in Northwestern Romania in relation to clinical and paraclinical presentation and to identify the relative frequency of non-specific symptoms and potential risk factors. Between June 2022 and January 2024, 426 fecal samples were screened for gastro-intestinal parasites by rapid tests and microscopical examination, further confirmed by PCR and sequencing.

was confirmed in four samples (0.94%). A majority of positive patients were symptomatic and reported nausea and vomiting with a significantly higher frequency compared to negative ones. This study provides new insights into the epidemiological status and clinical implications of gastro-intestinal parasite species and genospecies in Romania that are necessary for an in-depth understanding of the potential zoonotic transmission and improvement of patient care.
Background and Objectives: Our study aimed to investigate the gross anatomy aspects of the fossa ovalis (FO) and the presence of some anatomical variation resulting from the incomplete fusion of ...septum primum and septum secundum, such as an atrial septal pouch (SP) and left atrial septal ridge. Materials and Methods: Thirty-one adult human hearts removed from formalin-fixed specimens were examined to provide information about the morphology of the FO. The organs were free of any gross anatomically visible pathological conditions. Results: The most common variants were the FO located in the inferior part of the interatrial septum (64.51%), circular (61.3%), with a net-like structure (51.62%), prominent limbus (93.55%), and patent foramen ovale (PFO) (25.8%). The right SP was observed in 9.67% of specimens, the left SP was observed in 29.03% of cases, and in 51.61% of cases, a double SP was observed. One sample presented a right SP and a double left SP, and one case showed a triple left SP, which was not reported previously to our knowledge. Conclusions: Knowledge of the interatrial septal anatomy becomes important for interventional cardiologists and should be documented before transeptal puncture.
This systematic review critically evaluated the impact of a pre-infection COVID-19 vaccination on the incidence and severity of post-COVID-19 syndrome and aimed to assess the potential protective ...effect across different vaccines and patient demographics. This study hypothesized that vaccination before infection substantially reduces the risk and severity of post-COVID-19 syndrome. In October 2023, a comprehensive literature search was conducted across three databases, PubMed, Embase, and Scopus, focusing on studies published up to that date. Utilizing a wide array of keywords, the search strategy adhered to the PRISMA guidelines and was registered in the Open Science Framework. The inclusion criteria comprised studies focusing on patients with a breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection who developed post-COVID-19 syndrome. We included a total of 13 articles that met the inclusion criteria, analyzing more than 10 million patients with a mean age of 50.6 years, showing that the incidence of intensive care unit (ICU) admissions post-vaccination was as low as 2.4%, with a significant reduction in mortality risk (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.58-0.74). The prevalence of post-COVID-19 syndrome symptoms was lower in vaccinated individuals (9.5%) compared to unvaccinated (14.6%), with a notable decrease in activity-limiting symptoms (adjusted OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.48-0.73). Vaccinated patients also showed a quicker recovery and return to work (HR 1.37, 95% CI 1.04-1.79). The pooled odds ratio of 0.77 indicates that vaccination is associated with a 23% reduction in the risk of developing post-COVID-19 syndrome (95% CI 0.75-0.79). Despite the protective effects observed, a substantial heterogeneity among the studies was noted. In conclusion, a pre-infection COVID-19 vaccination is associated with a significant reduction in the risk and severity of post-COVID-19 syndrome. However, the observed heterogeneity across studies suggests a need for further research with standardized methods to fully comprehend vaccine efficacy against long COVID.
Abstract Purpose We investigated the efficiency of the Charlson's weighted index of comorbidities (WIC) in predicting the risk of death in septic patients. Materials and Methods A single-center, ...3-year analysis of all septic patients was conducted; WIC and organ failure assessed using the Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score were calculated retrospectively. Results Of 250 septic patients, 60 patients (34%) had WIC above 2. Fifty-five patients (22%) died during the hospitalization. Increasing WIC was associated with increased mortality. Mean WIC differed significantly between survivors and nonsurvivors ( P < .0001), and the univariate logistic regression revealed that risk of death depends significantly of WIC with odds ratio of 1.59 (95% confidence interval, 1.31-1.93; P < .001). The accuracy of prediction for the risk of death was 79.2%. Receiver operating characteristics curve indicated a WIC of 2 as a cutoff value, the association between WIC greater than 2, and the risk of death being described by an odds ratio of 1.87 (95% confidence interval, 1.017-3.457; P = .042); the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve in predicting mortality was 0.81 for the SOFA score and 0.68 for WIC; WIC correlated positively with SOFA ( r = 0.27; P < .0001). Conclusion In septic patients, WIC is predictive for hospital mortality, and the risk of death significantly depends on WIC.

The essential oil was extracted by steam distillation and tested on six reference bacterial strains and also on the MDR strains collected from patients of the "Pius Brînzeu" Emergency Clinical County Hospital Timișoara. The in vitro antibacterial activity was evaluated by agar disk diffusion method and microdilution method.
Testing the antibacterial activity of peppermint oil on both reference strains and isolated MDR strains from hospitalized patients demonstrated its bactericidal effect. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was lower (20 mg/mL) for
