A chief problem encountered in higher education today is the high university dropout or failure rate of students coming from secondary education. Most of them drop out in the first year of their ...studies which is when they are affected by the greater impact of university teaching after leaving the secondary system. This work proposes to analyze the causes of this impact on one of the subjects which has high failure rates in Computer Engineering studies. Based on this analysis we propose to use a complementary method for learning and evaluating the subject, which is based on virtual debates held online which has led to a break with the negative tendencies attached to this subject. This methodology was put into practice during the 2006/2007 academic year, obtaining excellent results without detriment to the quality of the content addressed in the subject.
Chiral gold(I) catalysts have been designed based on a modified JohnPhos ligand with a distal C 2-2,5-diarylpyrrolidine that creates a tight binding cavity. The C 2-chiral element is close to where ...the C–C bond formation takes place in cyclizations of 1,6-enynes. These chiral mononuclear catalysts have been applied for the enantioselective 5-exo-dig and 6-endo-dig cyclization of different 1,6-enynes as well as in the first enantioselective total synthesis of three members of the carexane family of natural products. Opposite enantioselectivities have been achieved in seemingly analogous reactions of 1,6-enynes, which result from different chiral folding of the substrates based on attractive aryl–aryl interactions.
According to the "World Cancer Research Fund" and the "American Institute of Cancer Research" (WCRF/AICR) one in four cancer cases could be prevented through a healthy diet, weight control and ...physical activity.
To explore the association between the WCRF/AICR recommendations and risk of breast cancer.
During the period 2006 to 2011 we recruited 973 incident cases of breast cancer and 973 controls from 17 Spanish Regions. We constructed a score based on 9 of the WCRF/AICR recommendations for cancer prevention:: 1)Maintain adequate body weight; 2)Be physically active; 3)Limit the intake of high density foods; 4)Eat mostly plant foods; 5)Limit the intake of animal foods; 6)Limit alcohol intake; 7)Limit salt and salt preserved food intake; 8)Meet nutritional needs through diet; S1)Breastfeed infants exclusively up to 6 months. We explored its association with BC by menopausal status and by intrinsic tumor subtypes (ER+/PR+ & HER2-; HER2+; ER&PR-&HER2-) using conditional and multinomial logistic models respectively.
Our results point to a linear association between the degree of noncompliance and breast cancer risk. Taking women who met 6 or more recommendations as reference, those meeting less than 3 showed a three-fold excess risk (OR=2.98(CI95%:1.59-5.59)), especially for postmenopausal women (OR=3.60(CI95%:1.24;10.47)) and ER+/PR+&HER2- (OR=3.60(CI95%:1.84;7.05)) and HER2+ (OR=4.23(CI95%:1.66;10.78)) tumors. Noncompliance of recommendations regarding the consumption of foods and drinks that promote weight gain in premenopausal women (OR=2.24(CI95%:1.18;4.28); p for interaction=0.014) and triple negative tumors (OR=2.93(CI95%:1.12-7.63)); the intake of plant foods in postmenopausal women (OR=2.35(CI95%:1.24;4.44)) and triple negative tumors (OR=3.48(CI95%:1.46-8.31)); and the alcohol consumption in ER+/PR+&HER2- tumors (OR=1.52 (CI95%:1.06-2.19)) showed the strongest associations.
Breast cancer prevention might be possible by following the "World Cancer Research Fund" and the "American Institute of Cancer Research" recommendations, even in settings like Spain, where a high percentage of women already comply with many of them.

This study analyzes the association of excessive energy intake and caloric restriction with breast cancer (BC) risk taking into account the individual energy needs of Spanish women. We conducted a ...multicenter matched case-control study where 973 pairs completed lifestyle and food frequency questionnaires. Expected caloric intake was predicted from a linear regression model in controls, including calories consumed as dependent variable, basal metabolic rate as an offset and physical activity as explanatory. Overeating and caloric restriction were defined taking into account the 99% confidence interval of the predicted value. The association with BC risk, overall and by pathologic subtype, was evaluated using conditional and multinomial logistic regression models. While premenopausal women that consumed few calories (>20% below predicted) had lower BC risk (OR = 0.36; 95% CI = 0.21-0.63), postmenopausal women with an excessive intake (≥40% above predicted) showed an increased risk (OR = 2.81; 95% CI = 1.65-4.79). For every 20% increase in relative (observed/predicted) caloric intake the risk of hormone receptor positive (p-trend < 0.001) and HER2+ (p-trend = 0.015) tumours increased 13%, being this figure 7% for triple negative tumours. While high energy intake increases BC risk, caloric restriction could be protective. Moderate caloric restriction, in combination with regular physical activity, could be a good strategy for BC prevention.
Abstract
Prefoldin is a heterohexameric complex conserved from archaea to humans that plays a cochaperone role during the co-translational folding of actin and tubulin monomers. Additional functions ...of prefoldin have been described, including a positive contribution to transcription elongation and chromatin dynamics in yeast. Here we show that prefoldin perturbations provoked transcriptional alterations across the human genome. Severe pre-mRNA splicing defects were also detected, particularly after serum stimulation. We found impairment of co-transcriptional splicing during transcription elongation, which explains why the induction of long genes with a high number of introns was affected the most. We detected genome-wide prefoldin binding to transcribed genes and found that it correlated with the negative impact of prefoldin depletion on gene expression. Lack of prefoldin caused global decrease in Ser2 and Ser5 phosphorylation of the RNA polymerase II carboxy-terminal domain. It also reduced the recruitment of the CTD kinase CDK9 to transcribed genes, and the association of splicing factors PRP19 and U2AF65 to chromatin, which is known to depend on CTD phosphorylation. Altogether the reported results indicate that human prefoldin is able to act locally on the genome to modulate gene expression by influencing phosphorylation of elongating RNA polymerase II, and thereby regulating co-transcriptional splicing.
Hyperparathyroidism in patients on chronic hemodialysis presents with bone pain, pruritus, and extra-skeletal calcifications. Little attention has been paid to low plasma protein concentrations and ...muscle weakness in these patients. The present study was undertaken to characterize the impact of subtotal parathyroidectomy for chronic hemodialysis on body composition, muscle strength, plasma proteins, quality of life, and long-term clinical course.
We performed a prospective observational before-after assessment study of consecutive chronic hemodialysis patients referred for parathyroidectomy. Patients were investigated at baseline before parathyroidectomy and then at 1 and 6 months after surgery, with the aim to assess changes in metabolic parameters, body composition by bioimpedance, muscle strength, and quality of life (36-items Short Form Health Survey questionnaire). Follow-up was terminated when patients reached 1 of the 3 pre-defined end points: recurrence of secondary hyperparathyroidism, transplantation, or death.
A group of 23 patients on hemodialysis were included. Preoperative handgrip strength was diminished by 52.4 ± 17%. After parathyroidectomy, a drop of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone concentrations (1,153 vs 237 pg/mL; P < .001) was observed together with increases in plasma protein (total: 6.8 vs7.8 g/dL, s-albumin 3.7 vs 4.4 g/dL and prealbumin: 31.7 vs 35.2 mg/dL; P < .001), handgrip strength (18.3 vs 22.9 kg: P = .001) as well as an improvement in physical dimension (32.9 vs 35.6; P = .004) and vitality (32.3 vs 47.1; P = .002) domains of the 36-items Short Form Health Survey questionnaire. After10 years, one-third of the patients had died, one-third of the patients had a recurrence of secondary hyperparathyroidism, and one-third of patients had received a kidney transplant and maintained a normal parathyroid function.
Subtotal parathyroidectomy improves protein metabolic markers, muscle strength, and physical performance in chronic hemodialysis patients.

A new generation of chiral gold(I) catalysts based on variations of complexes with JohnPhos-type ligands with a remote C 2-symmetric 2,5-diarylpyrrolidine have been synthesized with different ...substitutions at the top and bottom aryl rings: from replacing the phosphine by a N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) to increasing the steric hindrance with bis- or tris-biphenylphosphine scaffolds, or by directly attaching the C 2-chiral pyrrolidine in the ortho-position of the dialkylphenyl phosphine. The new chiral gold(I) catalysts have been tested in the intramolecular 4+2 cycloaddition of arylalkynes with alkenes and in the atroposelective synthesis of 2-arylindoles. Interestingly, simpler catalysts with the C 2-chiral pyrrolidine in the ortho-position of the dialkylphenyl phosphine led to the formation of opposite enantiomers. The chiral binding pockets of the new catalysts have been analyzed by DFT calculations. As revealed by non-covalent interaction plots, attractive non-covalent interactions between substrates and catalysts direct specific enantioselective folding. Furthermore, we have introduced the open-source tool NEST, specifically designed to account for steric effects in cylindrical-shaped complexes, which allows predicting experimental enantioselectivities in our systems.
