In this paper, the total ionizing dose (TID) response of a commercial 28-nm high-k CMOS technology at ultrahigh doses is measured and discussed. The degradation of pMOSFETs depends not only on the ...channel width but also on the channel length. Short-channel pMOSFETs exhibit a higher TID tolerance compared to long ones. We attributed this effect to the presence of the halo implantations. For short-channel lengths, the drain halo can overlap the source one, increasing the average bulk doping along the channel. The higher bulk doping attenuates the radiation-induced degradation, improving the TID tolerance of short-channel transistors. The results are finally compared and discussed through technology computer-aided design simulations.
Particulate matter (PM) is a carrier of many substances. Microorganisms are vital constituents contained in PM, and their varieties and concentrations are closely connected to human health and animal ...production. This study aimed to investigate the distribution characteristics of bioaerosols inside a pig house and in the respiratory tract of pigs. Environmental indices inside a nursery pig house were monitored in winter, including temperature, relative humidity, total suspended particulate (TSP), PM10, PM2.5, NH3, CO2, CO and NO. The concentrations of airborne culturable bacteria, fungi and Escherichia coli were detected. Then, 16S rRNA sequencing technology was applied to identify different-sized bioaerosols and bacteria in the respiratory tract of piglets. The results showed that the concentration of airborne culturable bacteria inside the pig house was significantly higher than that outside, and no significant difference was found among culturable fungi and Escherichia coli. The 16S rRNA results showed that the bacterial aerosols presented high similarity to the bacteria in the respiratory tract of piglets. The airborne bacterial aerosols within the size range of 1.1–3.3 µm showed high similarity to the bacteria in the lower respiratory tract (bronchus and lung) of piglets. In addition, four potential pathogenic bacterial genera (Escherichia-Shigella, Streptococcus, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas) were identified both in the bacterial aerosols and the respiratory tract of piglets. These results will provide a significant scientific basis for exploring the potential risk of aerosols from animal houses to human and animal health.

Posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE) usually develops in a small percentage of patients of traumatic brain injury after a varying latent period. Modeling this chronic neurological condition in rodents is ...time consuming and inefficient, which constitutes a significant obstacle in studying its mechanism and discovering novel therapeutics for its prevention and treatment. Partially isolated neocortex, or undercut, is known to induce cortical hyperexcitability and epileptiform activity in vitro, and has been used extensively for studying the neurophysiological mechanism of posttraumatic epileptogenesis. However, whether the undercut lesion in rodents causes chronic epileptic seizures has not been systematically characterized. Here we used a miniature telemetry system to continuously monitor electroencephalography (EEG) in adult C57BL mice for up to 3 months after undercut surgery. We found that 50% of animals developed spontaneous seizures between 16-50 days after injury. The mean seizure duration was 8.9±3.6 seconds, and the average seizure frequency was 0.17±0.17 times per day. There was no progression in seizure frequency and duration over the recording period. Video monitoring revealed behavioral arrests and clonic limb movement during seizure attacks. A pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) test further showed increased seizure susceptibility in the undercut mice. We conclude that undercut lesion in mice is a model of chronic PTE that involves spontaneous epileptic seizures.

Despite advances in wound closure techniques and devices, there is still a critical need for new methods of enhancing the healing process to achieve optimal outcomes. Recently, stem cell therapy has ...emerged as a new approach to accelerate wound healing. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) hold great promise for wound healing, because they are multipotential stem cells capable of differentiation into various cell lineages and secretion of angiogenic growth factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefit of ASCs on wound healing and then investigate the probable mechanisms. ASCs characterized by flow cytometry were successfully isolated and cultured. An excisional wound healing model in rat was used to determine the effects of locally administered ASCs. The gross and histological results showed that ASCs significantly accelerated wound closure in normal and diabetic rat, including increased epithelialization and granulation tissue deposition. Furthermore, we applied GFP-labeled ASCs on wounds to determine whether ASCs could differentiate along multiple lineages of tissue regeneration in the specific microenvironment. Immunofluorescent analysis indicated that GFP-expressing ASCs were costained with pan-cytokeratin and CD31, respectively, indicating spontaneous site-specific differentiation into epithelial and endothelial lineages. These data suggest that ASCs not only contribute to cutaneous regeneration, but also participate in new vessels formation. Moreover, ASCs were found to secret angiogenic cytokines in vitro and in vivo, including VEGF, HGF, and FGF2, which increase neovascularization and enhance wound healing in injured tissues. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that ASC therapy could accelerate wound healing through differentiation and vasculogenesis and might represent a novel therapeutic approach in cutaneous wounds.
The particulate matter (PM) in livestock houses, one of the primary sources of atmospheric PM, is not only detrimental to the respiratory health of animals and farmworkers but also poses a threat to ...the public environment and public health and warrants increased attention. In this study, we investigated the variation in the pulmonary microbiome and metabolome in broiler chickens exposed to PM collected from a broiler house. We examined the pulmonary microbiome and metabolome in broilers, observing that PM induced a visible change in α and β diversity. A total of 66 differential genera, including unclassified_f_Ruminococcaceae and Campylobacter, were associated with pulmonary inflammation. Untargeted metabolomics was utilised to identify 63 differential metabolites induced by PM and correlated with differential bacteria. We observed that PM resulted in injury of the broiler lung and disruption of the microbial community, as well as causing changes in the observed metabolites. These results imply that perturbations to the microbiome and metabolome may play pivotal roles in the mechanism underlying PM-induced broiler lung damage.

Large-scale integration of multitype renewable energy (RE) sources (intermittent energy sources) has become an important feature in smart grid development all over the world. It is internationally ...recognized that the island (or weak-tie connected) power grids are the best platforms for intermittent energy integration test and demonstration because of their abundant RE resources, scarcity of conventional energy, and technical difficulty with accommodation of intermittent energy. The ongoing research on Hainan (the second biggest island in China) power grid will achieve a comprehensive breakthrough in power grid planning, analysis, scheduling, operation, relay protection, security control, disaster prevention, and other key areas in multitype RE source integration. To be specific, this paper focuses on the key part of the research project-optimal scheduling and complementary operation and a new framework of multitime-frame robust scheduling/dispatch system is first proposed, which is different from most other robust approaches and lays special emphasis on the engineering characteristics of power system operation. Simulation results based on the real data of Hainan power grid show that the approach presented is effective and will be put into online operation in the near future.
Stroke is the most common cause of acquired epilepsy, but treatment for preventing the development of post-stroke epilepsy is still unavailable. Since stroke results in neuronal damage and death as ...well as initial loss of activity in the affected brain region, homeostatic plasticity may be trigged and contribute to an increase in network hyperexcitability that underlies epileptogenesis. Correspondingly, enhancing brain activity may inhibit hyperexcitability from enhanced homeostatic plasticity and prevent post-stroke epileptogenesis. To test these hypotheses, we first used in vivo two-photon and mesoscopic imaging of activity of cortical pyramidal neurons in Thy1-GCaMP6 transgenic mice to determine longitudinal changes in excitatory activity after a photothrombotic ischemic stroke. At 3-days post-stroke, there was a significant loss of neuronal activity in the peri-injury area as indicated by reductions in the frequency of calcium spikes and percentage of active neurons, which recovered to baseline level at day 7, supporting a homeostatic activity regulation of the surviving neurons in the peri-injury area. We further used optogenetic stimulation to specifically stimulate activity of pyramidal neurons in the peri-injury area of Thy-1 channelrhodopsin transgenic mice from day 5 to day 15 after stroke. Using pentylenetetrazole test to evaluate seizure susceptibility, we showed that stroke mice are more susceptible to Racine stage V seizures (time latency 54.3 ± 12.9 min) compared to sham mice (107.1 ± 13.6 min), but optogenetic stimulation reversed the increase in seizure susceptibility (114.0 ± 9.2 min) in mice with stroke. Similarly, administration of D-cycloserine, a partial N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor agonist that can mildly enhance neuronal activity without causing post-stroke seizure, from day 5 to day 15 after a stroke significantly reversed the increase in seizure susceptibility. The treatment also resulted in an increased survival of glutamic acid decarboxylase 67 (GAD67) positive interneurons and a reduced activation of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) positive reactive astrocytes. Thus, this study supports the involvement of homeostatic activity regulation in the development of post-stroke hyperexcitability and potential application of activity enhancement as a novel strategy to prevent post-stroke late-onset seizure and epilepsy through regulating cortical homeostatic plasticity.

Excessive CNS synapses are eliminated during development to establish mature patterns of neuronal connectivity. A complement cascade protein, C1q, is involved in this process. Mice deficient in C1q ...fail to refine retinogeniculate connections resulting in excessive retinal innervation of lateral geniculate neurons. We hypothesized that C1q knockout (KO) mice would exhibit defects in neocortical synapse elimination resulting in enhanced excitatory synaptic connectivity and epileptiform activity. We recorded spontaneous and evoked field potential activity in neocortical slices and obtained video-EEG recordings from implanted C1q KO and wild-type (WT) mice. We also used laser scanning photostimulation of caged glutamate and whole cell recordings to map excitatory and inhibitory synaptic connectivity. Spontaneous and evoked epileptiform field potentials occurred at multiple sites in neocortical slices from C1q KO, but not WT mice. Laser mapping experiments in C1q KO slices showed that the proportion of glutamate uncaging sites from which excitatory post-synaptic currents (EPSCs) could be evoked ("hotspot ratio") increased significantly in layer IV and layer V, although EPSC amplitudes were unaltered. Density of axonal boutons was significantly increased in layer V pyramidal neurons of C1q KO mice. Implanted KO mice had frequent behavioral seizures consisting of behavioral arrest associated with bihemispheric spikes and slow wave activity lasting from 5 to 30 s. Results indicate that epileptogenesis in C1q KO mice is related to a genetically determined failure to prune excessive excitatory synapses during development.
The building of the ocean power strategy and the implementation of the blue agriculture plan urgently need to strengthen the sustainable development of marine fishery. Taking vulnerability as the ...starting point, this paper constructs the vulnerability index system of marine fishery industry ecosystem from the aspects of sensitivity and response capacity, and combines the entropy method with the Topsis to comprehensively analyze the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of vulnerability of marine fishery industry ecosystem in the Bohai Rim Region from 2001 to 2015. The results show that: 1) In the time dimension, from 2001 to 2015, the vulnerability of the marine fishery industry ecosystem in the Bohai Rim Region shows a fluctuant and degressive trend; 2) In the spatial dimension, the spatial distribution of the marine fishery industry ecosystem vulnerability in the Bohai Rim Region presents the gradient characteristics which shows high vulnerability in the east and low vulnerability in the west. According to the evolution track of the system’s vulnerability level, the vulnerability of the marine fishery industry ecosystem is divided into ‘declining’ and ‘stable’ types of evolutionary structures; 3) The development of marine fishery in the Bohai Rim Region needs to be derived from the marine fishery’s ecological environment and the industrial development mode and structure, which can improve the marine environment remediation efforts, optimize the marine fishery industry structure, vigorously focus on pelagic fishery, and enhance the introduction of marine fishery’s science and technology talents,

Aircraft icing has historically been a critical cause of airplane crashes. The electro-impulse de-icing system has a wide range of applications in aircraft de-icing due to its lightweight design, low ...energy consumption, high efficiency, and other advantages. However, there has been little study into accurate wing electric-impulse de-icing simulation methods and the parameters impacting de-icing efficacy. Based on the damage mechanics principle and considering the influence mechanisms of interface debonding and ice fracture on ice shedding, this paper establishes a more accurate numerical model of wing electric-impulse de-icing using the Cohesive Zone Model (CZM). It simulates the process of electric-impulse de-icing at the leading edge of the NACA 0012 wing. The numerical results are compared to the experimental results, revealing that the constructed wing electro-impulse de-icing numerical model is superior. Lastly, the effects of varying ice–skin interface shear adhesion strengths, doubler loading positions, and impulse sequences on de-icing effectiveness were studied. The de-icing rate is a quantitative description of the electro-impulse’s de-icing action, defined in the numerical model as the ratio of cohesive element deletions to the total elements at the ice–skin interface. The findings reveal that varying shear adhesion strengths at the ice–skin interface significantly impact the de-icing effect. The de-icing rate steadily falls with increasing shear adhesion strength, from 66% to 56%. When two, four, and seven impulses were applied to doubler two, the de-icing rates were 59%, 71%, and 71%, respectively, significantly increasing the de-icing efficiency compared to when impulses were applied to doubler one. Doubler one and two impulse responses are overlaid differently depending on the impulse sequences, resulting in varying de-icing rates. When the impulse sequence is 20 ms, the superposition results are optimal, and the de-icing rate reaches 100%. These studies can guide the development and implementation of a wing electric-impulse de-icing system.
