Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific disorder that is a major cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality with a prevalence of 6-8% of pregnancies. Although impaired trophoblast invasion in ...early pregnancy is known to be closely associated with preeclampsia, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here we revealed that lysyl oxidase (LOX) and LOX-like protein 2 (LOXL2) play a critical role in preeclampsia. Our results demonstrated that LOX and LOXL2 expression decreased in preeclamptic placentas. Moreover, knockdown of LOX or LOXL2 suppressed trophoblast cell migration and invasion. Mechanistically, collagen production was induced in LOX- or LOXL2-downregulated trophoblast cells through activation of the TGF-β1/Smad3 pathway. Notably, inhibition of the TGF-β1/Smad3 pathway could rescue the defects caused by LOX or LOXL2 knockdown, thereby underlining the significance of the TGF-β1/Smad3 pathway downstream of LOX and LOXL2 in trophoblast cells. Additionally, induced collagen production and activated TGF-β1/Smad3 were observed in clinical samples from preeclamptic placentas. Collectively, our study suggests that the downregulation of LOX and LOXL2 leading to reduced trophoblast cell migration and invasion through activation of the TGF-β1/Smad3/collagen pathway is relevant to preeclampsia. Thus, we proposed that LOX, LOXL2, and the TGF-β1/Smad3/collagen pathway can serve as potential markers and targets for clinical diagnosis and therapy for preeclampsia.
Myocardial fibrosis after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the main causes of myocardial remodeling and heart function abnormalities. Bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP-7) has been reported ...to play essential roles in anti-fibrosis. In this study, we demonstrated the role of exogenous BMP-7 on myocardial fibrosis and heart function recovery after AMI. A rat model of AMI was established via ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD). Twenty rats were grouped into sham group which underwent chest open operation, but did not receive LAD ligation. Another 40 rats underwent LAD ligation were randomly grouped into saline-treated group (n = 20) and BMP-7-treated group (n = 20) which received saline treatment or exogenous BMP-7 treatment for 14 days, respectively. Two weeks after LAD ligation, the survival rate of BMP-7-treated AMI group was significantly improved compared to the saline group. Moreover, the cardiac function was preserved as shown by echocardiography examination, and the infarcted size was limited upon BMP-7 treatment. In addition, we investigated the role of TGF-β1 signaling pathway in BMP-7-mediated cardioprotective effects by analyzing the expression levels of TGF-β1, Smad 2 and Smad 3 in the infarct zone, border zone, and non-infarct zone. Western blot and quantitative PCR results suggested that BMP-7 attenuated myocardial fibrosis through counteracting TGF-β1 signaling pathway, thereby exerting cardioprotective effects. In conclusion, our data provide a potential therapeutic direction for preserving cardiac function and improving prognosis of AMI patients.

•A Zr-based continuous MOF-808 membrane was developed on carbon nanotube film.•MOF-808 membrane was used as ion-selective interlayer material for Li-S batteries.•MOF-808 membrane can ...selectively block polysulfides and promote their conversion.•The Li-S batteries deliver impressive cycle stability and rate capability.
The shuttle effect of polysulfides is the most critical challenge impeding the practical process of lithium-sulfur batteries. Herein, we report a continuous crystalline zirconium-based MOF-808 membrane that prepared on carbon nanotube film through a facial in-situ hydrothermal method, which is to be employed as multifunctional interlayer material in lithium-sulfur batteries. The growth characteristics of MOF-808 membrane and its applicability to lithium-sulfur batteries are detailedly investigated. With appropriate pore size and good electrolyte wettability, the as-prepared MOFs membrane can serve as an ion-selective barrier that efficaciously blocks polysulfides while allowing the rapid transport of lithium ions through sieving effect. Moreover, the redox kinetics is also accelerated by the MOF-808 membrane. Consequently, with the employment of the as-prepared interlayer, lithium-sulfur batteries deliver a durable cycle stability with a limited decay of merely 0.03 % per cycle over 500 cycles at 1 C, and an excellent rate capability of 707.3 mAh g−1 under 5 C. The strategy proposed here would advance the development of continuous MOFs membrane in the field of rechargeable batteries.
Understanding the pyrolysis product distributions of deep eutectic solvent (DES)-isolated lignins (DESLs) from different types of biomass is of great significance for lignin valorization. The ...structure and pyrolysis properties of DESLs obtained from eucalyptus (E-DESL), pine (P-DESL), and rice straw (R-DESL) were studied through the use of various methods such as elemental analysis, GPC, HS-GC, and NMR techniques, and the pyrolysis characteristics and product distributions of the DESLs were also further investigated through the use of TGA, Py-GC/MS, and tubular furnace pyrolysis. DESLs with high purity (88.5-92.7%) can be efficiently separated from biomass while cellulose is retained. E-DESL has a relatively low molecular weight, and P-DESL has a relatively higher hydrogen-carbon effective ratio and a lower number of condensation structures. The Py-GC/MS results show that, during DESL pyrolysis, the monomeric aromatic hydrocarbons,
-hydroxyphenyl-type phenols, and catechol-type phenols are gradually released when the guaiacyl-type phenols and syringyl-type phenols decrease with the rising temperature. 4-methylguaiacol and 4-methylcatechol, derived from the guaiacyl-type structural units, are positively correlated with temperature, which causes a significant increase in products with a side-chain carbon number of 1 from P-DESL pyrolysis. 4-vinylphenol, as a representative product of the R-DESL, derived from
-hydroxyphenyl-type structural units, also gradually increased. In addition, the P-DESL produces more bio-oil during pyrolysis, while gases have the highest distribution in E-DESL pyrolysis. It is of great significance to study the characteristic product distribution of lignin isolated through the use of DES for lignin directional conversion into specific high-value aromatic compounds.
Previous studies have found a correlation between numerosity processing and arithmetical performance. Visual perception has already been indicated as the shared cognitive mechanism between these two; ...however, these studies mostly focused on children. It is not clear whether the association between numerosity processing and arithmetical performance still existed following the development of individual arithmetical performance. Consequently, the underlying role of visual perception in numerosity processing and arithmetical performance has not been sufficiently studied in adults. For this study, researchers selected a total of 205 adult participants with an average age of 22years. The adults were administered arithmetic tests, numerosity comparison, and visual figure matching. Mental rotation, choice reaction time, and nonverbal intelligence were used as cognitive covariates. Results showed that numerosity comparison of adults correlated with their arithmetical performance, even after controlling for age and gender differences as well as general cognitive processing. However, after controlled for visual figure matching, the well-established association between numerosity comparison and arithmetic performance disappeared. These results supported the visual perception hypothesis, that visual perception measured by visual figure matching can account for the correlation between numerosity comparison and arithmetic performance. This indicated that even for adult populations, visual perceptual ability was the underlying component of numerosity processing and arithmetic performance.
Tin-based perovskites are promising for realizing lead-free perovskite solar cells; however, there remains a significant challenge to achieving high-performance tin-based perovskite solar cells. In ...particular, the device fill factor was much lower than that of other photovoltaic cells. Therefore, understanding how the fill factor was influenced by device physical mechanisms is meaningful. In this study, we reported a method to improve the device fill factor using a thin cesium iodide layer modification in tin-based perovskite cells. With the thin passivation layer, a high-quality perovskite film with larger crystals and lower charge carrier densities was obtained. As a result, the series resistance of devices was decreased; the shunt resistance of devices was increased; and the non-radiative recombination of devices was suppressed. Consequently, the fill factor, and the device efficiency and stability were greatly enhanced. The champion tin-based perovskite cells showed a fill factor of 63%, an efficiency of 6.1% and excellent stability. Our study reveals that, with a moderate thin layer modification strategy, the long-term stability of tin-based PSCs can be developed.
The power conversion efficiency of modern perovskite solar cells has surpassed that of commercial photovoltaic technology, showing great potential for commercial applications. However, the current ...high-performance perovskite solar cells all contain toxic lead elements, blocking their progress toward industrialization. Lead-free tin-based perovskite solar cells have attracted tremendous research interest, and more than 14% power conversion efficiency has been achieved. In tin-based perovskite, Sn
is easily oxidized to Sn
in air. During this process, two additional electrons are introduced to form a heavy p-type doping perovskite layer, necessitating the production of hole transport materials different from that of lead-based perovskite devices or organic solar cells. In this review, for the first time, we summarize the hole transport materials used in the development of tin-based perovskite solar cells, describe the impact of different hole transport materials on the performance of tin-based perovskite solar cell devices, and summarize the recent progress of hole transport materials. Lastly, the development direction of lead-free tin-based perovskite devices in terms of hole transport materials is discussed based on their current development status. This comprehensive review contributes to the development of efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly tin-based perovskite devices and provides guidance for the hole transport layer material design.
Abstract
Background
Accurately predicting the future development trend of population aging is conducive to accelerating the development of the elderly care industry. This study constructed a combined ...optimization grey prediction model to predict the structure and density of elderly population.
Methods
In this paper, a GT-FGM model is proposed, which combines Theta residual optimization with fractional-order accumulation operator. Fractional-order accumulation can effectively weaken the randomness of the original data sequence. Meanwhile, Theta residual optimization can adjust parameter by minimizing the mean absolute error. And the population statistics of Shanghai city from 2006 to 2020 were selected for prediction analysis. By comparing with the other traditional grey prediction methods, three representative error indexes (MAE, MAPE, RMSE) were conducting for error analysis.
Results
Compared with the FGM model, GM (1,1) model, Verhulst model, Logistic model, SES and other classical prediction methods, the GT-FGM model shows significant forecasting advantages, and its multi-step rolling prediction accuracy is superior to other prediction methods. The results show that the elderly population density in nine districts in Shanghai will exceed 0.5 by 2030, among which Huangpu District has the highest elderly population density, reaching 0.6825. There has been a steady increase in the elderly population over the age of 60.
Conclusions
The GT-FGM model can improve the prediction accuracy effectively. The elderly population in Shanghai shows a steady growth trend on the whole, and the differences between districts are obvious. The government should build a modern pension industry system according to the aging degree of the population in each region, and promote the balanced development of each region.
