We demonstrate that at relatively low mass accretion rates, black hole candidate (BHC) X-ray binaries (XRBs) should enter ‘jet-dominated’ states, in which the majority of the liberated accretion ...power is in the form of a (radiatively inefficient) jet and not dissipated as X-rays in the accretion flow. This result follows from the empirically established non-linear relation between radio and X-ray power from low/hard state BHC XRBs, which we assume also to hold for neutron star (NS) XRBs. Conservative estimates of the jet power indicate that all BHC XRBs in ‘quiescence’ should be in this jet-dominated regime. In combination with an additional empirical result, namely that BHC XRBs are more ‘radio-loud’ than NS XRBs, we find that in quiescence NS XRBs should be up to two orders of magnitude more luminous in X-rays than BHC XRBs, without requiring any significant advection of energy into a black hole. This ratio is as observed, and such observations should therefore no longer be considered as direct evidence for the existence of black hole event horizons. Furthermore, even if BHCs do contain black holes with event horizons, this work demonstrates that there is no requirement for the advection of significant amounts of accretion energy across the horizon.
ABSTRACT We present a combined analysis of the Chandra and Swift observations of the 2015 X-ray echo of V404 Cygni. Using a stacking analysis, we identify eight separate rings in the echo. We ...reconstruct the soft X-ray light curve of the 2015 June outburst using the high-resolution Chandra images and cross-correlations of the radial intensity profiles, indicating that about 70% of the outburst fluence occurred during the bright flare at the end of the outburst on MJD 57199.8. By deconvolving the intensity profiles with the reconstructed outburst light curve, we show that the rings correspond to eight separate dust concentrations with precise distance determinations. We further show that the column density of the clouds varies significantly across the field of view, with the centroid of most of the clouds shifted toward the Galactic plane, relative to the position of V404 Cyg, invalidating the assumption of uniform cloud column typically made in attempts to constrain dust properties from light echoes. We present a new XSPEC spectral dust-scattering model that calculates the differential dust-scattering cross section for a range of commonly used dust distributions and compositions and use it to jointly fit the entire set of Swift echo data. We find that a standard Mathis-Rumpl-Nordsieck model provides an adequate fit to the ensemble of echo data. The fit is improved by allowing steeper dust distributions, and models with simple silicate and graphite grains are preferred over models with more complex composition.
In this paper we report on Expanded Very Large Array radio and Chandra and Swift X-ray observations of the outburst decay of the transient black hole candidate MAXI J1659-152 in 2011. We discuss the ...distance to the source taking the high inclination into account and conclude that the source distance is probably 6 ± 2 kpc. The lowest observed flux corresponds to a luminosity of
erg s−1. This, together with the orbital period of 2.4 h reported in the literature, suggests that the quiescent X-ray luminosity is higher than predicted on the basis of the orbital period-quiescent X-ray luminosity relationship. It is more in line with that expected for a neutron star, although the outburst spectral and timing properties reported in the literature strongly suggest that MAXI J1659-152 harbours a black hole. This conclusion is subject to confirmation of the lowest observed flux as the quiescent flux. The relation between the accretion and ejection mechanisms can be studied using the observed correlation between the radio and X-ray luminosities as these evolve over an outburst. We determine the behaviour of MAXI J1659-152 in the radio-X-ray diagram at low X-ray luminosities using the observations reported in this paper and at high X-ray luminosities using values reported in the literature. At high X-ray luminosities, the source lies closer to the sources that follow a correlation index steeper than 0.6-0.7. However, when compared to other sources that follow a steeper correlation index, the X-ray luminosity in MAXI J1659-152 is also lower. The latter can potentially be explained by the high inclination of MAXI J1659-152 if the X-ray emission comes from close to the source and the radio emission is originating in a more extended region. However, it is probable that the source was not in the canonical low-hard state during these radio observations and this may affect the behaviour of the source as well. At intermediate X-ray luminosities, the source makes the transition from the radio underluminous sources in the direction of the relation traced by the 'standard' correlation similar to what has been reported for H 1743−322 in the literature. However, MAXI J1659-152 remains underluminous with respect to this 'standard' correlation.
We introduce the Galactic Bulge Survey (GBS) and we provide the Chandra source list for the region that has been observed to date. Among the goals of the GBS are constraining the neutron star (NS) ...equation of state and the black hole (BH) mass distribution via the identification of eclipsing NS and BH low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). The latter goal will, in addition, be obtained by significantly enlarging the number of BH systems for which a BH mass can be derived. Further goals include constraining X-ray binary formation scenarios, in particular the common envelope phase and the occurrence of kicks, via source-type number counts and an investigation of the spatial distribution of X-ray binaries, respectively. The GBS targets two strips of 6? X 1? (12 deg2 in total), one above (1? < b < 2?) and one below (--2? < b < --1?) the Galactic plane in the direction of the Galactic center at both X-ray and optical wavelengths. By avoiding the Galactic plane (--1? < b < 1?) we limit the influence of extinction on the X-ray and optical emission but still sample relatively large number densities of sources. The survey is designed such that a large fraction of the X-ray sources can be identified from their optical spectra. The X-ray survey, by design, covers a large area on the sky while the depth is shallow using 2 ks per Chandra pointing. In this way we maximize the predicted number ratio of (quiescent) LMXBs to cataclysmic variables. The survey is approximately homogeneous in depth to a 0.5-10 keV flux of 7.7 X 10--14 erg cm--2 s--1. So far, we have covered about two-thirds (8.3 deg2) of the projected survey area with Chandra providing over 1200 unique X-ray sources. We discuss the characteristics and the variability of the brightest of these sources.
ABSTRACT
We present the results from a dense multwavelength optical/UV, near-infrared (IR), and X-ray follow-up campaign of the nuclear transient AT 2017gge, covering a total of 1698 d from the ...transient’s discovery. The bolometric light curve, the blackbody temperature and radius, the broad H and He i λ5876 emission lines and their evolution with time, are all consistent with a tidal disruption event (TDE) nature. A soft X-ray flare is detected with a delay of ∼200 d with respect to the optical/UV peak and it is rapidly followed by the emergence of a broad He ii λ4686 and by a number of long-lasting high ionization coronal emission lines. This indicate a clear connection between a TDE flare and the appearance of extreme coronal line emission (ECLEs). An IR echo, resulting from dust re-radiation of the optical/UV TDE light is observed after the X-ray flare and the associated near-IR spectra show a transient broad feature in correspondence of the He i λ10830 and, for the first time in a TDE, a transient high-ionization coronal NIR line (the Fe xiii λ10798) is also detected. The data are well explained by a scenario in which a TDE occurs in a gas-and-dust rich environment and its optical/UV, soft X-ray, and IR emission have different origins and locations. The optical emission may be produced by stellar debris stream collisions prior to the accretion disc formation, which is instead responsible for the soft X-ray flare, emitted after the end of the circularization process.
On 2008 May 14, the Burst Alert Telescope onboard the Swift mission triggered on a type-I X-ray burst from the previously unclassified ROSAT object 1RXH J173523.7−354013, establishing the source as a ...neutron star X-ray binary. We report on X-ray, optical and near-infrared observations of this system. The X-ray burst had a duration of ∼2 h and belongs to the class of rare, intermediately long type-I X-ray bursts. From the bolometric peak flux of ∼3.5 × 10−8 erg cm−2 s−1, we infer a source distance of D≲ 9.5 kpc. Photometry of the field reveals an optical counterpart that declined from R= 15.9 during the X-ray burst to R= 18.9 thereafter. Analysis of post-burst Swift/X-ray Telescope observations as well as archival XMM–Newton and ROSAT data suggests that the system is persistent at a 0.5–10 keV luminosity of ∼2 × 1035 (D/9.5 kpc)2 erg s−1. Optical and infrared photometry together with the detection of a narrow Hα emission line (full width at half maximum = 292 ± 9 km s−1, equivalent width =−9.0 ± 0.4 Å) in the optical spectrum confirms that 1RXH J173523.7−354013 is a neutron star low-mass X-ray binary. The Hα emission demonstrates that the donor star is hydrogen rich, which effectively rules out that this system is an ultracompact X-ray binary.

Over the past few years, ∼30 extragalactic fast X-ray transients (FXRTs) have been discovered, mainly in Chandra and XMM-Newton data. Their nature remains unclear, with proposed origins, ...including a double neutron star merger, a tidal disruption event involving an intermediate-mass black hole and a white dwarf, or a supernova shock breakout. A decisive differentiation between these three promising mechanisms for their origin requires an understanding of the FXRT energetics, environments, and/or host properties. We present optical observations obtained with the Very Large Telescope for the FXRTs XRT 000519 and XRT 110103 and Gran Telescopio Canarias observations for XRT 000519 designed to search for host galaxies of these FXRTs. In the gs, rs, and R-band images, we detect an extended source on the north-west side of the $\sim \, 1^{\prime \prime }$ (68 per cent confidence) error circle of the X-ray position of XRT 000519 with a Kron magnitude of gs = 26.29 ± 0.09 (AB magnitude). We discuss the XRT 000519 association with the probable host candidate for various possible distances, and we conclude that if XRT 000519 is associated with the host candidate a supernova shock breakout scenario is likely excluded. No host galaxy is found near XRT 110103 down to a limiting magnitude of R > 25.8.
ABSTRACT
A star tidally disrupted by a black hole can form an accretion disc with a super-Eddington mass accretion rate; the X-ray emission produced by the inner disc provides constraints on the ...black hole mass M• and dimensionless spin parameter a•. Previous studies have suggested that the M• responsible for the tidal disruption event 3XMM J150052.0+015452 (hereafter J150052) is ∼105 M⊙ in the intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) regime. Fitting multi-epoch XMM–Newton and Chandra X-ray spectra obtained after 2008 during the source’s decade-long decay, with our latest slim accretion disc model, gives $M_\bullet = 2.0^{+1.0}_{-0.3}\times 10^{5}$ M⊙ (at 68 per cent confidence) and a• > 0.97 (an 84.1 per cent confidence lower limit). The spectra obtained between 2008 and 2014 are significantly harder than those after 2014, an evolution that can be well explained by including the effects of inverse Comptonization by a corona on the early-time spectra. The corona is present when the source accretion rate is super-Eddington, while there is no evidence for its effect in data obtained after 2014, when the mass accretion rate is around the Eddington limit. Based on our spectral study, we infer that the corona is optically thick and warm ($kT_\mathrm{ e}=2.3^{+2.7}_{-0.8}$ keV). Our mass and spin measurements of J150052 confirm it as an IMBH and point to a rapid, near-extremal, spin. These M• and a• values rule out both vector bosons and axions of masses ∼10−16 eV.

We present the results of a large multiwavelength follow-up campaign of the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT 2019dsg, focusing on low to high resolution optical spectroscopy, X-ray, and radio ...observations. The galaxy hosts a super massive black hole of mass $\rm (5.4\pm 3.2)\times 10^6\, M_\odot$ and careful analysis finds no evidence for the presence of an active galactic nucleus, instead the TDE host galaxy shows narrow optical emission lines that likely arise from star formation activity. The transient is luminous in the X-rays, radio, UV, and optical. The X-ray emission becomes undetected after ∼100 d, and the radio luminosity density starts to decay at frequencies above 5.4 GHz by ∼160 d. Optical emission line signatures of the TDE are present up to ∼200 d after the light-curve peak. The medium to high resolution spectra show traces of absorption lines that we propose originate in the self-gravitating debris streams. At late times, after ∼200 d, narrow Fe lines appear in the spectra. The TDE was previously classified as N-strong, but after careful subtraction of the host galaxy’s stellar contribution, we find no evidence for these N lines in the TDE spectrum, even though O Bowen lines are detected. The observed properties of the X-ray emission are fully consistent with the detection of the inner regions of a cooling accretion disc. The optical and radio properties are consistent with this central engine seen at a low inclination (i.e. seen from the poles).

MAXI J1659-152 is a 2.4 h orbital period X-ray dipping transient black hole candidate. We present spectroscopy of its I ≈ 23 quiescent counterpart, where we detect Hα emission with full ...width half maximum (FWHM) of 3200 ± 300 km s−1. Applying the correlation between the Hα FWHM and radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor star for quiescent X-ray transients, we derive K2 = 750 ± 80 km s−1. The orbital period and K2 lead to a mass function of 4.4 ± 1.4 M⊙ (1σ). The donor to compact object mass ratio and binary inclination are likely in the range q = M2/M1 = 0.02–0.07 and i = 70○–80○. These constraints imply a 68 per cent confidence level interval for the compact object mass of 3.3 ≲ M1(M⊙) ≲ 7.5, confirming its black hole nature. These quasi-dynamical limits are compared to mass estimates from modelling of X-ray data and any discrepancies are discussed. We review the properties of optical spectroscopy and time-series photometry collected during the 2010–2011 outburst. We interpret the apparent modulations found soon after the onset of high-accretion activity and during the 2011 rebrightening event as originating in the accretion disc. These have signatures consistent with superhumps, with the 2011 modulation having a fractional period excess $\lt 0.6{\rm{per\, cent}}$ (3σ). We propose that direct irradiation of the donor by the central X-ray source was not possible due to its occultation by the disc outer regions. We argue that disc shielding significantly weakens the donor star contribution to the optical variability in systems with q ≲ 0.07, including neutron star ultra-compact X-ray binaries.
