Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can develop into many different kinds of diseases ranging from simple warts to carcinoma in situ. Some investigators have recently suggested that HPV infection ...could be closely related to palmoplantar epidermal cysts. The aim of this study was to determine the existence of HPV and its subtype in palmoplantar epidermal cysts of Korean patients. We investigated 13 cases of palmoplantar epidermal cysts by employing clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations. In addition, PCR was performed using HPV 57 and 60 type primers. Four of the 13 cases (30.8%) showed the distinct histopathological features of palmoplantar epidermal cysts such as parakeratosis, vacuolar structures and eosinophilic inclusion bodies and these 4 cases showed positive immunohistochemical staining reactions for HPV. PCR for HPV detected type 60-positive bands in 5 of the 13 cases (38.5%), which included the 4 cases that were positive for immunohistochemical staining. These results show that HPV is associated with some cases of palmoplantar epidermal cysts in Korean patients, suggesting that HPV may play a role in the pathogenesis of these cysts.

This study was aimed to assess the beneficial effects on metabolic syndrome of functional yogurt NY-YP901 (Namyang Dairy Product Co. Ltd and Nutra R&BT Inc., Seoul, Korea) supplemented with mixture ...of Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium infantis and extra-ingredients containing Bifidobacterium breve (CBG-C2), Enterococcus faecalis FK-23, fibersol-2 and so on.
This study was designed as an 8-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel study. Treatment and control groups consumed a functional yogurt NY-YP901 (150 ml) and a placebo yogurt twice a day, respectively, for 8 weeks. Body weight and body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, lipid profiles, fasting glucose with HbA1C and waist circumference were measured before and after treatment. Inclusion criteria were healthy individuals between the ages 20-65 years old who submitted an informed consent.
During the period August 2009 to December 2009, 101 healthy participants (31 males and 70 females) finished the study. Treatment group were 53 individuals, and the control group were 48 individuals. In the treatment group consuming NY-YP901, statistically significant beneficial changes were observed in body weight (treatment group vs control group=-0.24±1.50 vs +0.64±1.39 kg, P<0.05), BMI (-0.10±0.58 vs +0.24±0.50 kg/m(2), P<0.05 ) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (-7.71±14.14 vs -0.43±15.32 mg/dl, P<0.05) after 8 weeks. The change in other parameters was not different between the treatment and the control groups.
The functional yogurt NY-YP901 reduced LDL-cholesterol, body weight and BMI in the subjects at a 300-ml consumption daily for 8 weeks. From these findings, regular intake of functional yogurt NY-YP901 may be consequently related to improve metabolic syndrome.
We present a search for the lepton-flavour-violating decays $B^+ \to K^+
\tau^\pm \ell^\mp$, with $\ell = (e, \mu)$, using the full data sample of $772
\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs recorded by ...the Belle detector at the KEKB
asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We use events in which one $B$ meson is
fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. We find no evidence for $B^\pm
\to K^\pm \tau \ell$ decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions
at the 90% confidence level in the $(1$-$3) \times 10^{-5}$ range. The obtained
limits are the world's best results.

The High Threshold Cherenkov Counter (HTCC) is one of the detector systems of the CLAS12 spectrometer, and is used to generate a fast trigger signal in electron scattering experiments in the polar ...angle range from 5°to 35°. The HTCC is installed in front of the drift chambers and introduces a minimal amount of additional material within the acceptance. The HTCC is one unit whose core component is a multifocal mirror that consists of 60 lightweight ellipsoidal mirrors. It is important that the HTCC provides efficient coverage of the CLAS12 forward acceptance with no gaps. In order to achieve this, each sector of the CLAS12 Forward Detector is covered by 2 identical half-sector mirrors that focus Cherenkov light on 8 phototubes. The HTCC has a total of 48 channels with Electron Tubes 9823QKB photomultipliers that have a 5-in quartz face plate to detect Cherenkov light. The system provides rejection of charged π-mesons with momenta below 4.8 GeV for the reliable identification of scattered electrons. In this paper the details of the design, construction, calibration, and performance results of the HTCC are presented.
Here, we present a measurement of angular observables and a test of lepton flavor universality in the B → K*ℓ+ℓ- decay, where ℓ is either e or μ . The analysis is performed on a data sample ...corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711fb-1 containing 772×106 B B ¯ pairs, collected at the Υ ( 4S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e+e- collider KEKB. The finding is consistent with standard model (SM) expectations, where the largest discrepancy from a SM prediction is observed in the muon modes with a local significance of 2.6σ .
Background & Aims Little is known about the effects of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) on hepatic activity of human cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1) and cholesterol metabolism. We studied these ...processes in mice in vivo and mouse and human hepatocytes. Methods Farnesoid X receptor ( Fxr ) −/− , small heterodimer partner ( Shp ) −/− , and C57BL/6 (wild-type control) mice were fed normal or Western diets for 3 weeks and were then given intraperitoneal injections of vehicle (corn oil) or 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25OH2 D3 ; 4 doses, 2.5 μg/kg, every other day). Plasma and tissue samples were collected and levels of Vdr, Shp, Cyp7a1, Cyp24a1, and rodent fibroblast growth factor (Fgf) 15 expression, as well as levels of cholesterol, were measured. We studied the regulation of Shp by Vdr using reporter and mobility shift assays in transfected human embryonic kidney 293 cells, quantitative polymerase chain reaction with mouse tissues and mouse and human hepatocytes, and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays with mouse liver. Results We first confirmed the presence of Vdr mRNA and protein expression in livers of mice. In mice fed normal diets and given injections of 1,25(OH)2 D3 , liver and plasma concentrations of 1,25(OH)2 D3 increased and decreased in unison. Changes in hepatic Cyp7a1 messenger RNA (mRNA) correlated with those of Cyp24a1 (a Vdr target gene) and inversely with Shp mRNA, but not ileal Fgf15 mRNA. Similarly, incubation with 1,25(OH)2 D3 increased levels of Cyp24a1/CYP24A1 and Cyp7a1/CYP7A1 mRNA in mouse and human hepatocytes, and reduced levels of Shp mRNA in mouse hepatocytes. In Fxr −/− and wild-type mice with hypercholesterolemia, injection of 1,25(OH)2 D3 consistently reduced levels of plasma and liver cholesterol and Shp mRNA, and increased hepatic Cyp7a1 mRNA and protein; these changes were not observed in Shp −/− mice given 1,25(OH)2 D3 and fed Western diets. Truncation of the human small heterodimer partner (SHP) promoter and deletion analyses revealed VDR-dependent inhibition of SHP , and mobility shift assays showed direct binding of VDR to enhancer regions of SHP . In addition, chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis of livers from mice showed that injection of 1,25(OH)2 D3 increased recruitment of Vdr and rodent retinoid X receptor to the Shp promoter. Conclusions Activation of the VDR represses hepatic SHP to increase levels of mouse and human CYP7A1 and reduce cholesterol.
Controlling for day-to-day variation is a key issue in estimating long-term dietary exposure to heavy metals using 24-hour recall (24HR) data from a relatively small number of days.
This study was ...conducted to estimate long-term dietary exposure to lead, cadmium and mercury among Korean children using the Iowa State University (ISU) method and to assess the contributions of different food groups to heavy metal intake.
We analyzed 2 days of 24HR data from 457 children between 0 and 6 years of age in 2010. Using bootstrapped concentration data for 118 representative foods, 93.5% of total intake was included in the exposure estimates in this study. Using the 2-day exposure data, we estimated long-term exposure by controlling for within-individual variation using the ISU method.
The long-term dietary exposure estimates (mean±standard deviation) for lead, cadmium, and mercury were 0.47±0.14, 0.38±0.20, and 0.22±0.08 μg/kg bw/day, respectively. For lead and cadmium, the percentages of children whose exposure was greater than the reference value were 35 and 42%, respectively. Fruits were an important source of lead exposure, and cereal and fish and shellfish made the greatest contributions to the total cadmium and mercury exposure.
Our findings also suggest that the long-term exposure to lead and cadmium was somewhat greater than the reference values, whereas mercury exposure was well below than the reference value in this population. Further studies may be necessary to evaluate the food items contributing to heavy metal exposure, and continuous monitoring is needed to ensure the safety of food intake and dietary patterns among vulnerable groups in Korea.
The effect of oxygen sources, i.e. O3 or H2O, on chemical composition, dielectric constant and leakage current density of atomic-layer-deposited La-silicate films was examined. The dielectric ...constant of La-silicate films grown using O3 was ∼8.0, which was lower than that of La-silicate films grown using H2O, ∼11.7 due to the higher Si concentrations. However, leakage current density of La-silicate films grown using O3 was about 3 orders of magnitude lower than that of La-silicate films grown using H2O at an identical capacitance-equivalent-thickness (but almost half the physical thickness), due to the higher Si concentrations and less La-carbonate formation.
Cholecystoscopic lithotripsy can be an alternative procedure for the treatment of impacted cystic duct stones in patients who are high risk for surgery. Conventional methods, including ...electrohydraulic lithotripsy (EHL), occasionally fail due to the inability to access or capture the impacted stones in the narrow, spirally long cystic duct. Using extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) may be more effective to disintegrate cystic duct stones. The aim of the study is to evaluate the role of ESWL in the endoscopic treatment of impacted cystic duct stones in patients with high operative risk.
Eleven patients with impacted cystic duct stones who were at high risk for surgery were included in this study. All of them had had a failed initial attempt of percutaneous transhepatic cholecystoscopic lithotripsy (PTCCS-L) followed by percutaneous transhepatic cholecystostomy. Patients underwent ESWL to disintegrate cystic duct stones with endoscopic removal of fragmented stones.
Complete removal of cystic duct stones was achieved in 9 of 11 patients (81.8%). One of the 9 patients (11.1%) was treated solely with ESWL, but the other 8 patients (88.9%) required cholecystoscopic removal of residual fragmented stones after ESWL. Fragmented stones passing through the cystic duct impacted in ampullary region in 3 patients after ESWL. Two patients required transpapillary removal of stones.
Endoscopic stone removal after ESWL for impacted cystic duct stones is a difficult and time-consuming procedure. But, it seems to be a relatively safe alternative to surgery in patients with high surgical risk.
We report on the response of a high light-output NaI(Tl) crystal to nuclear recoils induced by neutrons from an Am-Be source and compare the results with the response to electron recoils produced by ...Compton scattered 662 keV \(\gamma\)-rays from a \(^{137}\)Cs source. The measured pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) power of the NaI(Tl) crystal is found to be significantly improved because of the high light output of the NaI(Tl) detector. We quantify the PSD power with a quality factor and estimate the sensitivity to the interaction rate for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with nucleons, and the result is compared with the annual modulation amplitude observed by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment. The sensitivity to spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions based on 100 kg\(\cdot\)year of data from NaI detectors is estimated with simulated experiments, using the standard halo model.
