An 18-year-old male giraffe developed a verrucous lesion, 50 cm in diameter, on a flank. Some areas of the lesion were histologically typical of a viral verruca with papillomatosis, prominent ...hypergranulosis, and inclusion bodies. The bulk of the mass was a well-differentiated verrucous type of squamous cell carcinoma. It may be that the virus of the verruca also caused the verrucous carcinoma.
One‐hundred‐two patients with malignant melanoma who had distant metastases surgically resected and were judged to be clinically free of disease (M. D. Anderson Stage IVA melanoma) were studied. The ...median survival for all the patients from time of diagnosis of stage IVA disease was 18 months. The site of the resected metastases did not appear to influence survival, being approximately the same for the brain (15 months), lung (16 months), intraabdominal (18 months), and skin and/or lymph nodes (23 months). The site of the resected metastases also did not influence the median disease‐free interval. Patients who had metastases resected from several organs at the same time had a median survival of 15 months, which was similar to that of patients with one resected site. Patients who were rendered Stage IVA on several occasions by surgical excisions had a median survival of 36 months. Thirty‐five patients received surgery only and 67 patients received adjuvant chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or combined chemoimmunotherapy after surgery. For the group treated with surgery only, the median disease‐free interval and survival from diagnosis of stage IVA disease were 6 months and 16 months, respectively, and for the adjuvant group 6 months and 21 months, respectively. Specifically, by the type of adjuvant therapy, the median disease‐free interval and survival from stage IVA for 23 patients receiving Corynebacterium parvum were 6.9 and 19 months; for 39 patients receiving BCG, eight months and 26 months; for 24 patients receiving BCG + DTIC, eight and 17.4 months; and for all 51 DTIC treated patients 6.3 and 17.8 months, respectively. Patients receiving BCG had a median survival superior to the surgery only group (P = 0.02). An increase in survival was seen predominantly in patients who achieved IVA status more than once and received BCG. Patients with recurrent soft‐tissue metastases appeared to benefit most from BCG in prolonging the disease‐free interval. Only 1/10 treated by surgery alone had a disease‐free interval longer than 1 year, compared with 9/16 who received BCG (P = 0.01). Stage IVA melanoma appears to be distinctly different in prognosis from Stage IVB melanoma and should be classified separately. Patients with recurrent soft‐tissue disease may benefit significantly from treatment with BCG.
Three patients had neonatal lupus erythematosus syndrome. All three infants were girls who presented with characteristic skin lesions but without evidence of congenital heart block. All three mothers ...were asymptomatic at the time of delivery and have remained so until the present time. All mothers were positive for anti-Ro/SSA antibodies, as were the infants prior to 6 months of age. Anti-La/SSB antibodies were not present in either the mothers or the infants. HLA typing revealed that two of the mothers were positive for B8 and DR3, while the third mother was positive for B8 and DR2. Two of the infants were positive for B8 and DR3, while the third infant was positive for DR2 only.
On a dense energy grid reaching up to 75 meV electron collision energy the fragmentation angle and the kinetic energy release of neutral dissociative recombination fragments have been studied in a ...twin merged beam experiment. The anisotropy described by Legendre polynomials and the extracted rotational state contributions were found to vary on a likewise narrow energy scale as the rotationally averaged rate coefficient. For the first time angular dependences higher than 2\(^{nd}\) order could be deduced. Moreover, a slight anisotropy at zero collision energy was observed which is caused by the flattened velocity distribution of the electron beam.
274 adult volunteers completed a questionnaire concerning how different behaviors and emotions, which may be attributed to alcohol abuse, would affect their performance appraisal ratings of an ...individual who exhibited those behaviors or emotions. The appearance of behaviors and emotions that might signify alcohol abuse resulted in lower ratings. There was no difference between supervising and non-supervising raters or between male and female raters. Problems in permitting the symptoms to affect performance ratings are discussed.
Phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) soluble extracts of human epidermis and dermis from secretor donors contain products with blood group antigenic activity. The predominant blood group in a sample was ...the same as the red cell phenotype of the donor. H substance activity was present in all PBS-soluble products (from A, B and O donors). By gel filtration chromatography on a Bio-Gel A-1.5 m column; the epidermal and dermal PBS-soluble blood group substances fractionate in the void volume.
To report initial experiences with stent implantation in the treatment of native and recurrent aortic coarctation in adults.
Two adult patients were diagnosed with aortic coarctation: in one, the ...native aorta was involved, and in the other, the stenosis involved a prior coarctation repair. Both patients were offered and selected angioplasty with possible stent implantation as an alternative to surgery.
In the patient with recurrent narrowing, thrombolysis and balloon dilation preceded the successful deployment of three Palmaz stents along the grafted segment. In the case of native disease, one Palmaz stent was implanted primarily at the site of a critical, focal stenosis. No complications were encountered, and recovery was uneventful. Follow-up at 12 and 6 months, respectively, showed sustained clinical improvement with resolution of symptoms and excellent hemodynamic values.
The positive outcome in these early cases supports further evaluation of the efficacy of adjunctive or primary stenting for treatment of native or recurrent aortic coarctation in adults.
A series of 1-(2-acyl-4-acylaminophenoxy)-3-isopropylaminopropan-2-ols has been synthesized and examined for beta-receptor blocking and antiarrhythmic activity. Several of these compounds are more ...than 20 times as active in blocking cardiac beta-receptors than vascular beta-receptors when given intravenously to anesthetized cats. The activities have been correlated quantitatively with partition and steric substitution constants. The observed relationships are consistent with a tentative proposal that the vascular receptor is situated in a more lipophilic environment than the cardiac receptor so that there is a differential transport effect between the two types of receptor.
Normal full-term newborn infants have been studied during a 3-hour period in which EEG, EMG, EKG and eye movements were recorded. Plasma HGH samples were obtained every 20 to 30 minutes in some ...infants by indwelling venous catheter, but in most by heel stick. Five infants of 2 days of age and eight infants between 4 and 8 days of age were studied.
In the 2-day-old group studied findings for the average plasma HCH in mµg/ml (mean ± S.E.) following at least 5 minutes of sleep (active and quiet) were 33.4 ± 7, 52.8 ± 11, and 43.5 ± 36 following 5 minutes of waking. Comparable values for the 4-to 8-day-old group were 9.1 ± 1.1, 9.5 ± 1.3, and 8.3 ± 1.2. Wide variation in individual samples was found for the 2-day-old's (3 to 150 µg/ml) while this was less so for the older groups (0 to 20.2 mµg/ml). However, only three samples out of a total of 95 had values less than 1 mµg/ml. It thus appears that no clear correlation between plasma HGH levels and sleep-wake cycles was evident in these infants. It is likely that as with other biologic rhythms, HGH rhythmicity develops at a later stage of cerebral maturation.
Dentally-induced stress and relaxation-induced anxiety reduction have been correlated with salivary changes in dental patients in two recent studies. In two subsequent studies, test anxiety-induced ...stress and relaxation-induced anxiety reduction were correlated with salivary changes in dental students. In another study using the resazurin dye indicator, increased salivary bacterial levels were correlated with an increased dental caries incidence. As a result of these findings, it was decided to reinvestigate the effects of stress and relaxation on salivary changes and in addition to examine the effects of those conditions on salivary bacteria. The hypotheses under consideration were: (1) Salivary changes from stress to relaxation will be from opaque to translucent and from high to low protein levels; and (2) salivary bacteria will increase under the condition of stress and decrease under the condition of relaxation. The subjects were twelve dental students. Stress and relaxation were evaluated before and after meditation by verbal reports and examination of saliva for opacity, translucency, protein and bacteria (resazurin dye method). There were significant anxiety-reduction changes by the end of the meditation sessions (p < 0.001) as measured by increased salivary translucency, decreased salivary protein and reduced subjective evaluation of stress. Using the resazurin dye method, bacterial levels showed a significant decrease by the end of the meditation sessions (p < 0.001). The results support hypothesis 1 and reaffirm previous findings in regard to the effectiveness of: (1) salivary changes as measures of stress and relaxation; and (2) meditation to induce deep relaxation. The finding of high bacteria levels under stress and lower bacterial levels under relaxation supports hypothesis 2 and indicates that stress may contribute to dental caries and relaxation may have an anti-caries effect.
