Premature atherosclerosis in HIV-infected patients is associated with chronic infection by itself and adverse effects of antiretroviral treatment (ART). Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) has a beneficial ...effect on the cardiovascular system because of its anti-inflammatory properties. The objective of this study was to determine whether the consumption of EVOO improves inflammation and atherosclerosis biomarkers in HIV-infected patients receiving ART.
This randomized, crossover, controlled trial included 39 HIV-positive male participants who consumed 50 mL of EVOO or refined olive oil (ROO) daily. Four participants dropped out of the study. Leukocyte count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), interleukin-6, fibrinogen, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, malondialdehyde, glutathione-peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, oxidized LDL and von Willebrand factor were determined before the first and after each of the 2 intervention periods. Intervention and washout periods lasted for 20 and 14 days, respectively.
In participants with >90% compliance (N=30), hsCRP concentrations were lower after EVOO intervention (geometric mean GM, 1.70 mg/L; 95% confidence interval CI, 1.15-2.52) compared to ROO administration (GM, 2.92 mg/L; 95% CI, 1.95-4.37) (p=0.035). In participants using lopinavir/ritonavir, ESR and hsCRP concentrations decreased 62% and 151%, respectively, after EVOO administration. In the whole study population (N=35) we found no difference in analyzed biomarkers after EVOO administration.
Our exploratory study suggests that EVOO consumption could lower hsCRP in patients on ART.

Tc-MIBI is an imaging technique used in nuclear medicine and performed in patients with suspected hyperparathyroidism (HPT). The objective of this study was to ...evaluate the role of this technique in patients who, along with suspected HPT, also have thyroid nodules. Retrospective analysis included a period of 8 years (2006-2013). The study included 91 patients with clinical or laboratory suspected HPT. Pathologic changes in parathyroid glands were demonstrated in 47 (70%) of 67 patients with positive scintigraphy. Pathologic changes in parathyroid glands were not evident in the remaining 20 (30%) patients. Out of nine patients with negative scintigraphy results but with suspected enlargement of the parathyroid gland examined by ultrasound, eight (89%) patients did not show pathologic changes in the parathyroid gland, whereas one (11%) patient had evident changes. Eight (54%) of 15 patients with suspected scintigraphy had positive ultrasound findings, as well as fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) findings with parathyroid hormone (PTH) determination in the aspirate. Seven (46%) patients had negative FNAC findings and PTH in the aspirate. The study showed scintigraphy to have high sensitivity (98%) in detecting patients with pathologic changes in the parathyroid glands. In patients with suspected HPT, scintigraphy needs to be combined with FNAC and PTH determination in the aspirate due to its low specificity of 28%.
The worldwide incidence of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) has increased in recent decades, likely due to frequent use of cervical ultrasonography (US) and US-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy ...(FNA)., US is performed during follow-up after thyroidectomy, and US-guided FNA with cytology is used if suspicious cervical lymph nodes (LN) or thyroid bed masses are detected. Knowing that serum anti-Tg antibodies (sTgAb) affect the use of serum Tg (sTg) as a tumor marker, the aim of our study was to assess the usefulness of Tg determination in needle aspirates (FNA-Tg) in presence of sTgAb. This retrospective study included 149 patients with DTC and 159 aspirations of suspicious LN and thyroid bed masses. As expected, there was a negative correlation between sTg and sTgAb levels (p<0.05), while FNA-Tg levels had a positive correlation with FNA-TgAb levels (p<0.05). Furthermore, we found a positive correlation between sTg and FNA-Tg levels (p<0.05), but not between sTgAb and FNA-TgAb or sTgAb and FNA-Tg. In conclusion, these results show that FNA-Tg values were not affected by sTgAb and that FNA-Tg measurement were highly effective in detecting cervical DTC metastases. However, combined use with cytology is suggested for neck evaluation because cytology could reveal metastases from other tumor sites.

The two-year research investigated the impact of different varieties and fertilizers on the root yield and the vitamin C content in the root of parsley. Three varieties of parsley were used and three ...fertilization treatments were applied (mineral, organic and organomineral fertilizer) as well as control. The varieties used in the research were: 'Domestic Sawmills', 'Mooskrause', 'Berlin Semi-Long'. The root yield and the vitamin C content in the root of parsley were significantly influenced by variety and type of fertilizer. With use of organic fertilizer, the highest yield of roots was achieved in both research years. The lowest vitamin C content was found in the unfertilized control, while the highest vitamin C content was obtained in the organomineral fertilizer treatment, but did not differ significantly from the treatment with organic fertilizer.

Cilj istrazivanja bio je procijeniti vaznost upotrebe ove metode kod bolesnika koji uza sumnju na HPT imaju i nodozne promjene stitnjace. Retrospektivna analiza obuhvatila je razdoblje od 8 godina (2006.-2013.). U studiju je bio ukljucen 91 bolesnik s klinicki ili laboratorijski sumnjivim HPT. Od 67 scintigrafski pozitivnih bolesnika, patoloski promijenjena paratireoidna zlijezda dokazana je u njih 47 (70%). U preostalih 20 (30%) bolesnika patoloski promijenjena paratireoidna zlijezda nije dokazana. Od 9 bolesnika s negativnim nalazom scintigrafije, a UZV suspektnom povecanom paratireoidnom zlijezdom, patoloski promijenjena paratireoidna zlijezda nije dokazana u njih 8 (89%), a dokazana je u jednog (11%) bolesnika. Od 15 scintigrafski dvojbenih bolesnika, njih 8 (54%) je imalo pozitivan nalaz UZV i citoloske punkcije uz odredivanje PTH u punktatu. U 7 (46%) bolesnika nalaz punkcije i PTH u punktatu bio je negativan. Istrazivanje potvrduje da scintigrafija ima visoku osjetljivost za otkrivanje bolesnika s patoloski promijenjenim paratireoidnim zlijezdama (98%). Zbog niske specificnosti (28%) scintigrafiju treba nadopuniti punkcijom uz odredivanje PTH u punktatu u bolesnika sa suspektnim HPT. Nakon provedene tireoidektomije, onkolosko pracenje ukljucuje US i US vodenu FNA i citolosku analizu aspirata ukoliko se otkriju sumnjivi cervikalni limfni cvorovi (LN) ili tkivo u lezistu stitnjace. Kako je poznato da serumska protutijela na tireoglobulin (sTgAb) utjecu na vrijednost serumskog Tg (sTg) kao tumorskog markera, cilj naseg istrazivanja je procijeniti korisnost odredivanja Tg u aspiratima suspektnih lezija (FNA-Tg) u prisutnosti sTgAb. Ova retrospektivna studija obuhvatila je 149 bolesnika s DTC-om i 159 uzoraka sumnjivih LN ili tkiva u lezistu stitnjace. Ocekivano su razine sTg pokazale obrnutu korelaciju s razinom sTgAb (p <0,05), ali su vrijednosti FNA-Tg imale znacajnu pozitivnu korelaciju s vrijednoscu FNA-TgAb (p <0,05). Nasim rezultatima smo pokazali pozitivnu korelaciju vrijednosti sTg i FNA-Tg (p <0,05), ali ne i korelaciju izmedu sTgAb i FNA-TgAb, kao niti sTgAb i FNA-Tg. Zakljucujemo da vrijednosti sTgAb ne utjecu na FNA-Tg te da je odredivanje FNA-Tg visoko ucinkovita metoda dijagnostike regionalnih metastaza DTC. Medutim, preporucuje se kombinirana upotreba s citologijom za procjenu suspektnih cvorova vrata jer se citolologijom mogu istodobno otkriti metastaze i drugih tumora. Kolestatske bolesti jetre predstavljaju rijetke bolesti koje zahvaćaju hepatocite, ekstrahepatalne i/ili intrahepatalne žučne vodove, a dovode do smetnji u stvaranju ili otjecanju žuči. Primarni ...bilijarni kolangitis (PBC) predstavlja novi naziv za bolest ranije poznatu kao primarna bilijarna ciroza. Imunološki napad dovodi do progresivnog oštećenja malih žučnih vodova unutar jetrenih lobula s razvojem fibroze, a u konačnici može dovesti do ciroze i zatajenja jetrene funkcije. Primarni sklerozirajući kolangitis (PSC) obilježava kronična upala praćena oštećenjem i fibrozom žučnih vodova s posljedičnom segmentalnom obliteracijom lumena, a može zahvatiti intrahepatalne ili ekstrahepatalne žučne vodove, ili oboje. PBC češće zahvaća žene, a PSC mušku populaciju. Umor, svrbež kože i žutica predstavljaju najčešće simptome kolestatskih bolesti jetre. Obje bolesti često se otkrivaju u asimptomatskoj fazi, kolestatskim profilom jetrenih enzima u laboratorijskim nalazima, odnosno dominantno povišenim vrijednostima alkalne fosfataze (ALP) i gama-glutamil transpeptidaze (GGT). Bolesnici često imaju pridružene druge autoimune bolesti. Za PBC karakterističan je nalaz antimitohondrijskih protutijela (AMA), dok se PSC dokazuje kolangiografijom. Komplikacije bolesti mogu biti posljedica kolestaze, upalnog (autoimunog) zbivanja te ciroze jetre ili razvoja tumora. Ursodeoksikolna kiselina predstavlja terapiju izbora u liječenju PBC-a jer usporava tijek bolesti, dok za PSC ne postoji dokazano djelotvorna medikamentozna terapija koja utječe na tijek osnovne bolesti. U obje bolesti primjenjuju se i simptomatske mjere te postupci usmjereni zbrinjavanju komplikacija, kao što su svrbež, malapsorpcija masti i vitamina topivih u mastima, ili striktura žučnih vodova. Povećana učestalost tumora zahtijeva trajni nadzor i pravodobno liječenje koje utječe na preživljenje bolesnika. Transplantacija jetre predstavlja metodu izbora u završnom stadiju obje bolesti.
