Among 53 Acinetobacter baumannii isolates collected in 2004, nine imipenem-resistant isolates were obtained from clinical specimens taken from patients hospitalized in Busan, Korea. Nine ...carbapenemase-producing isolates were further investigated in order to determine the mechanisms underlying resistance. These isolates were then analyzed via antibiotic susceptibility testing, microbiological tests of carbapenemase activity, pI determination, transconjugation test, enterobacterial repetitive consensus (ERIC)-PCR, and DNA sequencing.
Since T cells express diverse sex steroid hormone receptors, they might be a good model to evaluate the effects of sex steroid hormones on immune modulation. Porcine testicular extract contains ...several sex steroid hormones and may be useful to study the effects of sex steroid hormones during T cell activation. We have examined the effects of the porcine testicular extract on T cell activation: proliferation and secretion of cytokines (IL-2 and IFN-γ) by activated T cells were severely decreased after treatment with porcine testicular extract. The extract produced an immunosuppressive effect and inhibited the proliferation of activated T cells by blocking the cell cycle transition from the G

phase to S phase. These effects were mediated by a decrease in the expression of cyclin D1 and cyclin E and constitutive expression of p27

after T cell activation.
The polarization states of passively Q -switched microchip lasers were investigated by adopting different combinations of Yb:YAG, Cr,Ca:YAG crystals and ceramics. The results show that except for the ...random polarization oscillation of Yb:YAG/Cr,Ca:YAG all-ceramics combination, other three combinations including crystals exhibit linearly polarization. Highly efficient, nearly diffraction-limited beam quality, high peak power, sub-nanosecond passively Q -switched lasers were obtained for all combinations of Yb:YAG, Cr,Ca:YAG ceramics and crystals. The best laser performance was obtained with Yb:YAG/Cr,Ca:YAG crystals combination. The effect of polarization states on the laser performance was also addressed.
The expected growth of stroke burden in Korea in early 2000s led to the initiation of a government-funded clinical research project with the goal of development and implementation of national stroke ...guidelines. The CRCS-K (Clinical Research Collaboration for Stroke in Korea) began as a part of this project. For stroke epidemiology and quality of care research, the CRCS-K developed a multicenter, prospective, stroke registry and began collection of data in 2008. Now, about 100 000 cases have been registered at 17 university hospitals or regional stroke centers and about 200 articles have been published based on the registry experience. The analysis of the 10-year secular trends showed overall improvement of stroke care and outcomes and areas for improvement. This large-scale, high-quality dataset provides opportunities to explore and compare treatment disparities using the comparative effectiveness research methods, design and conduct a registry-based randomized clinical trial, connect the registry data with other data sources including the national claims data and neuroimaging or genetic data, and collaborate with other international researchers. An international stroke registry consortium may be a viable future direction.
In order to limit fault current from an accident in power grid, many research groups have developed resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) with a bifilar solenoid and a bifilar ...pancake types. Comparing with a bifilar solenoid type, a bifilar pancake type has the advantage of its volume, but it has problems such as recovery and insulation of SFCLs. To eliminate the drawback of these two types, in this paper, a new type of coil that is an oval-shaped SFCL, have proposed. This type consists of inner and outer layers which are connected in parallel. A small-scale sample coil was fabricated and experiments for both a short circuit test and recovery characteristic test were performed in liquid nitrogen. Experimental results were compared with two types of coils; the bifilar solenoid and bifilar pancake coil. Consequently, we confirmed the feasibility of an oval-shaped type.
Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is one of the most promising targets for cancer therapy. Here, we show the in vitro and in vivo anticancer effects and associated mechanisms of KO‐202125, one ...of the synthesized aristolactam analogs, as a novel EGFR inhibitor, in EGFR‐overexpressing cancer cell lines. KO‐202125 showed more effective growth inhibition and apoptosis induction than gefitinib, a representative EGFR inhibitor, in various EGFR‐overexpressing human cancers including estrogen receptor (ER)‐negative MDA‐MB‐231 human breast cancer cells. Epidermal growth factor receptor phosphorylation at Tyr1068 was reduced and, consequently, the association of EGFR with p85 was decreased by KO‐202125 treatment in MDA‐MB‐231 cell lines. This led to inactivation of the PI3K/Akt pathway, and consequently suppression of activation of the Wnt pathway and enhancement of the nuclear import of p27Kip1. KO‐202125 treatment in nude mice injected with MDA‐MB‐231 cells showed inhibition of tumor growth without toxicity. Collectively, our results showed the possibility of KO‐202125 as an effective therapy agent of EGFR‐overexpressing cancer cells through reduced EGFR activity and downregulation of the Akt pathway. With 25 strains belonging to 12 species of the genus Bacillus, the base composition of DNA, the susceptibility to bacteriophages, and the ability to transform Bacillus subtilis strain Marburg were ...studied. Analyses of phage DNAs were also performed. The results were as follows: (1) The DNA base compositions were not uniform even among strains belonging to one taxonomic species. (2) The DNAs extracted from B. natto, B. megaterium and B. polymyxa could transform genetic traits of B. subtilis Marburg although the frequencies were not equal. (3) The host ranges of some temperate bacteriophages were correlated with the taxonomical data. On these bases, the phylogenetic relatedness of B. subtilis to B. megaterium was discussed.
Objective
We evaluated the efficacy of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) on the functional outcome of patients with acute basilar artery occlusion and low posterior circulation acute stroke prognosis ...early computed tomography score (PC‐ASPECTS).
Methods
We identified patients with acute ischemic stroke due to basilar artery occlusion and PC‐ASPECTS of 6 or less, presenting within 24 h between August 2008 and April 2022. The primary outcome was a favorable functional outcome, defined as a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 0–3 at 90 days. The secondary outcomes included an mRS score of 0–2, a favorable shift in the ordinal mRS scale, the occurrence of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH), and mortality at 90 days. We compared the outcome of patients treated with EVT and those without EVT, using the inverse probability of treatment weighting methods.
Results
Out of 566 patients, 55.5% received EVT. In the EVT group, 106 (33.8%) achieved favorable outcomes, compared to 56 patients (22.2%) in the conservative group. EVT significantly increased the likelihood of achieving a favorable outcome compared to conservative treatment (relative risk RR 1.39, 95% confidence interval CI, 1.11–1.74, p = 0.004). EVT was associated with a favorable shift in the mRS (RR 1.85, 95% CI, 1.49–2.29, p < 0.001) and reduced mortality without an increase in the risk of sICH. It did not have an impact on achieving an mRS score of 0–2.
Interpretation
Patients with acute basilar artery occlusion and a PC‐ASPECTS of 6 or less might benefit from EVT without an increasing sICH. ANN NEUROL 2024;95:788–799
A series of pyrazoline derivatives with β-amino acyl group were synthesized and evaluated for their ability to inhibit dipeptidyl peptidase IV. Several pyrazoline derivatives exhibited submicromolar ...inhibitory activities against DPP-IV. X-ray co-crystal structure of initial hit compound
1h was determined. Among this series, carboxylic acid substituted pyrazoline derivative
2u was the most active and greatly decreased the inhibitory activity toward CYP3A4 enzyme.
