Antimicrobial peptides emerge as compounds that can alleviate the global health hazard of antimicrobial resistance, prompting a need for novel computational approaches to peptide generation. Here, we ...propose HydrAMP, a conditional variational autoencoder that learns lower-dimensional, continuous representation of peptides and captures their antimicrobial properties. The model disentangles the learnt representation of a peptide from its antimicrobial conditions and leverages parameter-controlled creativity. HydrAMP is the first model that is directly optimized for diverse tasks, including unconstrained and analogue generation and outperforms other approaches in these tasks. An additional preselection procedure based on ranking of generated peptides and molecular dynamics simulations increases experimental validation rate. Wet-lab experiments on five bacterial strains confirm high activity of nine peptides generated as analogues of clinically relevant prototypes, as well as six analogues of an inactive peptide. HydrAMP enables generation of diverse and potent peptides, making a step towards resolving the antimicrobial resistance crisis.
In this paper, shields made of 1.3964 stainless steel bonded to a fiber laminate were subjected to ballistic impact response of 7.62 × 51 mm ŁPS (light projectile with a lead core) projectiles. ...Additionally, between the steel sheet metal and the laminate, a liquid-filled bag was placed, which was a mixture of ethylene glycol (C
H
O
) with 5 wt.% SiO
nanopowder. Numerical modeling of the projectile penetrating the samples was carried out using the finite element method in the Abaqus program. The elasto-plastic behavior of the projectile material and the component layers of the shields was taken into account. Projectile penetration through glycol-filled bag has been performed using the smooth particle hydrodynamics technique. The morphology of the penetration channel was also analyzed using a scanning electron microscope. For the shield variant with a glycol-filled bag between the steel and laminate plates, the inlet speed of projectile was 834 m/s on average, and 366 m/s behind the sample. For the variant where there was no glycol-filled bag between the steel and laminate plates, the inlet and outlet average velocities were 836 m/s, after 481 m/s, respectively. Referring to the steel-glycol-laminate and steel-laminate variants, it can be concluded that the laminate-glycol-laminate is more effective.
The article presents the study of mechanical properties of welded steel from which the hull of a modern mine destroyer was made. Keeping the tightness of ship compartments during operation depends on ...the strength of these joints. The results of testing the mechanical properties of 1.3964 steel and its welded joints subjected to a static tensile test were presented, and a Johnson – Cook material model was proposed. The material model can be used in CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) simulations related to hull strength analysis.
Titanium alloys belong to the group of difficult-to-cut materials, machining of which leads to a number of challenges including large thermal loads on the cutting inserts and difficulties in ...obtaining a high quality machined surface. Great cutting forces, in turn, result in increased energy consumption. Therefore, it becomes important to attempt to reduce the amount of power consumed during machining, which can be achieved, among other things, by reducing the value of the coefficient of friction in the cutting zone. This paper presents a study on the influence of the size as well as the Cu nanoparticle concentration added to cutting fluid in MQL method on the power grid parameters while turning of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy. In this research, nanoparticles of 22 nm and 65 nm at concentrations of 0.5 wt% and 0.75 wt% were used. Turning process was carried out with constant cutting parameters and variable aerosol formation parameters, i.e. mass flow rate of nanofluid and volumetric flow rate of air. Based on the study, the use of 22 nm nanoparticles at 0.5 wt% concentration is recommended to achieve the smallest monitored values of the power grid parameters. The statistical analysis revealed that, out of the aerosol formation parameters considered, both the air flow rate and nanofluid flow rate do not significantly affect the values of the analysed power network parameters. However, the most significant factor is the variable nanoparticle size.
Submarine, as a technical object, has many systems necessary for operation. In addition to weapon systems, there are many systems necessary for the ships safe operation under the water. One of such ...systems is the submarine steering system. Article presents the principle of operation and the concept of modification of the stern rudders of the project 207(Kobben class) submarine. Based on measurement, resistance force characteristics were determined. A calculation model was proposed using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) techniques to determine resistance force characteristics during design stage. Then measured resistance force characteristics were used to verify the calculation model. Using the proposed method, resistance force characteristics for an existing submarine were determined, and then its modification was proposed. Simulation results for the modified rudder design allowed determining the reduction of ship resistance force for the new solution. Lower resistance force means lower demand for electrical power in the engine room, which consequently affects operational safety by increasing maneuverability and improving the immersion curve. The proposed modification allows to reduce power consumption by about 8 kW and reduced the resistance force by 2%, which increases the ship’s autonomy.
The article presented and analysed the reliability of water barriers as one of the methods of securing naval technical facilities against the terrorist attacks (motorboats with explosive materials) ...from the sea. Water tests of FOXX barriers were described as a means of protection against such a threat. The reliability of the barrier was modelled and simulated with the use of Finite Element Method (FEM).
