Methanol-induced optic neuropathy (Me-ION) is a serious condition that may result in long-term or irreversible visual impairment or even blindness secondary to damage and loss of function of the ...optic nerve and retina. Me-ION shows a tendency to occur as mass poisonings around the world with a clear predilection for poor societies in developing countries. The main mechanism underlying the molecular basis of Me-ION is the inhibition of the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation process through the binding of the toxic metabolite of methanol—formic acid—with the key enzyme of this process—cytochrome c oxidase. However, other mechanisms, including damage to the eye tissues by oxidative stress causing the intensification of the oxidative peroxidation process with the formation of cytotoxic compounds, as well as an increase in the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines and influence on the expression of key proteins responsible for maintaining cell homeostasis, also play an important role in the pathogenesis of Me-ION. Histopathological changes in the eye tissues are mainly manifested as the degeneration of axons and glial cells of the optic nerve, often with accompanying damage of the retina that may involve all its layers. Despite the development of therapeutic approaches, persistent visual sequelae are seen in 30–40% of survivors. Thus, Me-ION continues to be an important problem for healthcare systems worldwide.
To investigate the structure and function of the retina after scleral buckling (SB) surgery due to macula-on rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).
Twenty eyes with repaired macula-on RRD and 20 ...fellow eyes were included. All patients within 6-12 months of the procedure, were examined to evaluate retinal structure using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and vessel density (VD) by OCT angiography (OCTA). Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and microperimetry (MP) tests were used to assess retinal function.
Analysis of the microvascular network using OCTA between the operated and healthy fellow eyes showed a significant reduction on VD in superficial vascular plexus (SVP), deep vascular plexus (DVP) and radial peripapillary capillaries (RPC) (p< 0.001, p = 0.019 and p = 0.008, respectively). Comparison of retinal structure in SD-OCT showed no significant differences on thickness in ganglion cell complex (GCC) and peripaillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) (p> 0.05) between examined eyes. Retinal function analysis by MP examination showed a decrease of retinal sensitivity (p = 0.0013) whereas postoperative BCVA showed no differences (p = 0.62) in the operated eyes. Significant Pearson's correlations were observed between retinal sensitivity and VD in SVP, RPC (p< 0.05).
In the eyes after SB surgery due to macula-on RRD, changes in retinal sensitivity were accompanied by impairment of the microvascular network assessed by the OCTA.

Contact lens wear causes mutual interactions between the ocular surface and the lens, which may affect comfort as well as vision. The aim of this study was to examine deformations in modern positive- ...and negative-powered silicone hydrogel soft contact lenses (SiH SCLs) after 7 days of continuous wear. This pre-post interventional study included 64 eyes: 42 eyes with myopia of -3.00 D and 22 eyes with hyperopia of +3.00 D. All patients underwent general ophthalmic examination, corneal topography/tomography, total corneal and epithelial thickness mapping, and specular microscopy before and after the wearing period. SiH SCLs made of senofilcon A were worn continuously for 7 days on all eligible eyes. The geometry of the new and used lenses was measured 3 to 6 minutes after removal in two perpendicular planes using a custom-made swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) system for in vitro measurements. The anterior and posterior radii of curvature decreased in -3.00 D lenses in two perpendicular planes. This effect correlated significantly with average keratometry of the cornea. Sagittal lens height was lower in +3.00 D lens after wear, which correlated moderately with the corneal sagittal height. A significant decrease in central corneal epithelial thickness was observed after wearing +3.0 D lenses. In conclusion, SiH SCLs made of senofilcon A undergo minor deformations after 7-day continuous wear. Geometry modifications are different for -3.00 D and +3.00 D lenses, and they imitate the shape of the anterior eye surface. These geometric changes are accompanied by a decrease in the central thickness of corneal epithelium after +3.00 D lens wear.

Acute angle closure (AAC) is a relatively rare but serious ophthalmological condition in which early diagnosis and intraocular pressure (IOP) -lowering treatment play a key role in prognosis. The aim ...of this review is to present current understanding of the pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnosis, potential mechanisms as well as management of AAC associated with the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). In most cases, AAC in individuals receiving SSRIs occurs in the pupillary block mechanism, secondary to SSRI-induced mydriasis. However, SSRIs may also cause uveal effusion and, consequently, iridocorneal angle closure. Other factors such as impaired metabolism and elimination of SSRIs, individual genetic conditions, as well as inhibition of SSRIs metabolism due to the effects of other drugs used may also promote AAC.
To evaluate the correlation between retinal sensitivity in microperimetry (MP) with vessel density (VD) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). We ...enrolled 30 participants (52 eyes) with POAG and 15 participants (23 eyes) in the healthy control group. All participants were examined for retinal structure using OCTA to assess VD and Spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT) to assess ganglion cell complex (GCC) and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness. Retinal sensitivity was tested with MP and standard automatic perimetry (SAP). The VD in moderate/severe POAG was lower than that in mild POAG and healthy control in the macular superficial vascular plexus (SVP) (38.7±6.3% vs. 42.9±5.2%, 49.7±2.6% respectively, P<0.001) and peripapillary radial peripapillary capillaries (pRPC) (36.4±5.7% vs. 43.6±6.6%, 49.1±2.4% respectively, P0.05). The relationship between microvascular damage in the macular SVP whole and the decrease of MP average sensitivity threshold is stronger than the pRNFL thickness measurements and SAP parameters. OCTA and MP techniques are valuable methods that allow clinically monitor structural and functional changes in glaucomatous eyes.

Assessment and a direct comparison of retinal vessel density with the thickness of inner retinal layer (IRL) and outer retinal layer (ORL) in the same regions of the macula in subjects with ...Alzheimer's disease (AD) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
We analyzed data from 48 eyes of healthy control (HC) participants, 71 eyes with POAG, and 49 eyes of AD patients. Ophthalmic examination included optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging to measure IRL and ORL thickness and OCT angiography (OCTA) in the same region for the imaging of vessel density in the superficial vascular plexus (SVP) and deep vascular plexus (DVP) of the retina. A direct comparison of vessel density and retinal layers thickness, which different dynamic ranges, was obtained by normalizing values as percentage losses.
Patients with AD presented significantly greater losses of vascular density in the DVP and ORL thickness compared to POAG (p <0.001), but percentage losses of vessel density in SVP and IRL thickness were considerable in POAG compared to AD eyes (p<0.001). Positive associations among presence of AD were observed primarily in outer retina where a 1% decrease of ORL thickness was associated with about 24-29% increase in odds of the presence of AD. According to OCTA measurements, a 1% decrease of vessel density in DVP was positively associated with a 4-9% increase in odds of the presence of AD. In POAG positive associations among presence of disease were observed only in inner retina where 1% loss of IRL thickness and a 1% loss of vessel density in the SVP were positively associated with a 13-23% increase in risk of presence of the disease.
Analysis of ORL thickness and vessel density in DVP could potentially improve diagnostic capabilities and may provide a valuable approach for predicting of AD.

Abstract
Quantitative evaluation of the human corneal grafts stored in the tissue banks is usually limited to endothelial cell density and central thickness. Swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) is capable of ...measuring the central curvatures of the corneal tissue prepared for transplantation without loss of sterileness, providing insights on its refractive state. The aim of the paper is to compare in vitro SS-OCT measurements with pre-excision values. Hand-held keratometry and ultrasound pachymetry was performed on 22 corneas before excision of corneoscleral button and insertion in the vial with Eusol-C solution (AlchimiaS.r.l, Nicolò, Italy). After 12 to 36 h of hypothermic storage the corneas were examined within the vials with custom built SS-OCT system maintaining a sterile environment. The anterior and posterior central curvatures, and central corneal thickness (CCT) were measured. Rotation of the corneoscleral button was controlled by making a 6-o'clock mark during excision. Mean pre-excision CCT was 626.45 ± 28.71 µm and 468.05 ± 52.96 µm when measured with SS OCT (r = 0.55; p < 0.001). Respective values for average keratometry were 7.74 ± 0.39 mm and 7.92 ± 0.57 mm (r = 0.6; p = 0.22). Although high differences were observed in corneal thickness, keratometric radius of curvature at the flat (r = 0.42; p < 0.001) and steep (r = 0.62; p = 0.014) meridian of the anterior corneal surface, as well as corneal anterior astigmatism (r = 0.3; p < 0.001), showed good correlation with pre-excision values. SS-OCT is capable of providing quantitative evaluation of the human corneal grafts in hypothermic storage. Good correlation between curvature measurements before excision and during banking in the vial indicates its clinical utility.
Abstract
The geometry of contact lenses can be altered by wear but determining the changes that occur in soft contact lenses (SCLs) is challenging. This study aimed to investigate the shape ...alterations of daily disposable SCLs after wear using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Forty-five eyes with myopia of − 3.00 diopters (D) were enrolled. The participants wore three types of SCLs: hydrogel lens (nesofilcon A) and silicone hydrogel lenses (delefilcon A and stenfilcon A). The SCLs were scanned 3–6 min after lens removal. We found a significant decrease in the SCL anterior curvature: 0.24 ± 0.17 mm for nesofilcon A, 0.44 ± 0.21 mm for delefilcon A, and 0.53 ± 0.29 mm for stenfilcon A. The changes in the anterior curvature of SCLs correlated moderately with the mean corneal keratometry; Pearson’s correlation coefficients for nesofilcon A and delefilcon A were 0.57 and 0.52, respectively (

< 0.001). A statistically significant change in the total diameter was observed in SCL made of stenfilcon A (0.39 mm,
P
< 0.001). To conclude, the central radii of curvature decreased after a wearing period for all three types of daily disposable SCLs to imitate the anterior corneal surface, however, the changes in other geometrical parameters measured with SS-OCT were lens-specific.
Abstract
We derive relative proper motions of stars in the fields of the globular clusters M12, NGC 6362, M4, M55, M22, NGC 6752, NGC 3201, M30, M10, NGC 362, M5 and 47 Tucanae based on data ...collected between 1997 and 2015 with the 1-m Swope telescope of Las Campanas Observatory. We determine membership class and membership probability for over 446 000 objects, and show that these are efficient methods for separating field stars from members of the cluster. In particular, membership probabilities of variable stars and blue/yellow/red stragglers are determined. Finally, we find absolute proper motions for six globular clusters from our sample: M55, NGC 3201, M10, NGC 362, M5 and 47 Tuc. An electronic catalogue of the derived proper motions is publicly available via the internet.

A total of 111 eyes in consecutive patients, mean age 34.35 years (SD, 11.17), were enrolled. Each patient completed a standard Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire and general ophthalmic examination. Lower tear meniscus was evaluated using Spectral OCT (RTVue, Optovue) with cornea-anterior segment lens short. Three parameters were measured: tear meniscus cross-section area (TMA, mm), tear meniscus height (TMH, mm), and tear meniscus depth (TMD, mm). Break-up time and Schirmer tests after instillation of topical anesthetic drops were also evaluated.
The highest correlation with Schirmer test results was found with TMA, followed by TMH and TMD. Respective Spearman correlation coefficient values were 0.54, 0.52, and 0.3, respectively. TMA, TMH, and TMD measurements were significantly lower in dry eyes than in controls. Sensitivity and specificity for dry eye diagnosis were 80.56% and 89.33% for TMH, 86.11% and 85.33% for TMA, and 77.78% and 52.7% for TMD, respectively. There was a significant negative correlation between both TMA and TMH and Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire scores.
Lower tear meniscus parameters measured with Spectral OCT correlate well with the Schirmer test, break-up time, and subjective symptoms. TMA and TMH measurements have high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of dry eye syndrome.
