We examined the relation between the echocardiographic morphology of cardiac myxoma and systemic embolism in 25 patients. Two distinct types of myxoma could be identified by echocardiography: round ...type characterized by solid and round shape with nonmobile surface (n = 13, 52%), and polypoid type characterized by soft and irregular shape with mobile surface (n = 12, 48%); multiple regression analysis revealed the polypoid type of tumor was the only independent predictor of systemic embolism (p = 0.0029).
Herbal medicines are occasionally used in combination with conventional antidepressants to mitigate various depression-associated symptoms. However, there is limited information on ...herb-antidepressant interactions. In this study, we investigated the pharmacokinetic (PK) effects of four herbal medicines (Gami-soyosan, Banhasasim-tang, Ojeok-san, and Bojungikgi-tang) on escitalopram, a commonly used antidepressant.
In this open-label, fixed-sequence, three-period, crossover study, 18 participants were enrolled and divided into two groups. Each group received a 10 mg oral dose of escitalopram in period 1. Participants took escitalopram once daily and their assigned herbal medicines thrice a day for 7 d in periods 2 (group 1: Gami-soyosan, group 2: Ojeok-san) and 3 (group 1: Banhasasim-tang; group 2: Bojungikgi-tang). The primary endpoints were C
and AUC
of escitalopram. C
and AUC
in period 1 were obtained using nonparametric superposition from single-dose data. The PK endpoints were classified according to the CYP2C19 phenotype.
Of 18 participants, 16 completed the study. Systemic exposure to escitalopram resulted in a minor increase in the presence of each herbal medicine. The geometric mean ratios (GMRs, combination with herbal medicines/escitalopram monotherapy) and their 90% confidence intervals (CIs) for C
and AUC
were as follows: Gamisoyosan- 1.1454 (0.9201, 1.4258) and 1.0749 (0.8084, 1.4291), Banhasasim-tang-1.0470 (0.7779, 1.4092) and 1.0465 (0.7035, 1.5568), Ojeok-san-1.1204 (0.8744, 1.4357) and 1.1267 (0.8466, 1.4996), and Bojungikgi-tang-1.1264 (0.8594, 1.4762) and 1.1400 (0.8515, 1.5261), respectively. Furthermore, no significant differences in the GMRs of C
and AUC
were observed across different CYP2C19 phenotypes in any of the groups.
The co-administration of escitalopram with Gami-soyosan, Banhasasim-tang, Ojeok-san, or Bojungikgi-tang did not exert significant PK effects on escitalopram. These findings provide valuable insights into the safe use of herbal medicines along with escitalopram.
The investigation of the microstructure and mechanical properties has been conducted on an AA80 11 alloy produced by a novel intense plastic straining process named accumulative roll bonding. The ...results show that an ultrafine-grained 8011 alloy, having a mean grain (or subgrain) size less than 1 (mu)m, was successfully accumulative roll-bonded (ARB) at room temperature (RT-ARB) and at 200 deg C (HT-ARB).
The aim of this study was to determine the expression of leucocyte function-associated antigen (LFA)-1 (CD11a/CD18) by neutrophils and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 (CD54) by endothelial ...cells in the lungs of pigs that had been infected experimentally with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. Sixty-four 7-week-old conventional pigs were allocated randomly into infected (n = 40) or control (n = 24) groups. Five infected and three uninfected pigs were killed at 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 h post inoculation (hpi). Strong immunohistochemical expression of LFA-1 and ICAM-1 was detected frequently in neutrophils in the alveolar space and in endothelial cells in the capillaries of the alveolar septa, respectively. LFA-1 and ICAM-1 expression appeared to correlate with the onset of neutrophil infiltration into the alveolar space. The interaction between ICAM-1 and LFA-1 may be associated with the adherence of neutrophils to vascular endothelium, thereby permitting transmigration of these cells into inflamed lung.
In this study, the effect of Si content at a welded DSS on the pitting resistance was investigated. FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) was conducted using 22Cr-9Ni-3Mo as the basic composition and ...adjusting the Si content to 0.6wt%, 0.9wt%, and 1.8wt%. The 6-ferrite fraction increased due to addition of Si, and the amount of Y2 decreased. In the ferric chloride pitting test, the weight reduction range decreased due to an increase in the Si content. As to the location, pittings occurred intensively at the grain boundary or within the austenite grain due to the difference in PREN caused by the differential solid solubility in each phase. However, the higher the addition of Si, the more the number of pittings generated at the grain boundary decreased as the coherence of the passive film increased by the Si accumulated at the boundary. As a result of the potentiodynamic polarization test, while the Epit(Critical Pitting Potential) of all specimens depending on the temperature were observed to be similar at room temperature up to 45 C, the reduction range of the Epit was found to be small at the temperature higher than 45 C as Si content increased. This was found to be because of formation of SiO2 in the passive film.
Semi-crystalline shape memory polymers (SMPs) show net two-way shape memory (2W-SM) behavior under constant stresses by the recoverable creep strain upon heating and stress-induced crystallization ...under the application of creep stress upon cooling. The applied constant stress is the key factor in this 2W-SM behavior. A core/shell structure is manufactured for the purpose of imparting a constant stress upon SMPs. An SMP in film or fiber form is dipped into a solution of an elastomer, photoinitiator, and curing agent and then dried out. After this dip coating process is repeatedly carried out, the SMP/elastomer core/shell composite is deformed into a temporary shape after being heated up above the transition temperature of the SMP. Under constant strain conditions, the composite is cooled down, after which the shell elastomer is cured using ultraviolet light. Then, the SMP/elastomer core/shell composite extends and contracts upon cooling and heating, respectively, without any external load. This cyclic deformation behavior is characterized, demonstrating that the current method offers a simple macroscopic processing technique to manufacture 2W-SM polymer composites.
The Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged hadrons produced in deeply inelastic scattering on transversely polarised protons have been extracted from the data collected in 2007 with the CERN SPS ...muon beam tuned at 160 GeV/c. At large values of the Bjorken x variable non-zero Collins asymmetries are observed both for positive and negative hadrons while the Sivers asymmetry for positive hadrons is slightly positive over almost all the measured x range. These results strongly support the present theoretical interpretation of these asymmetries, in terms of leading-twist quark distribution and fragmentation functions.
Immunohistochemistry was used to demonstrate secreted mucins MUC2, MUC5AC and MUC5B and membrane-bound mucin MUC4 in the pulmonary bronchioles of piglets experimentally infected with Mycoplasma ...hyopneumoniae. Conventional status, Landrace–Duroc cross-bred piglets, 13days of age, were randomised to two groups. One group (n=20) was infected by the intra-tracheal route with the SNU98703 strain of M. hyopneumoniae, and a group of 12 animals acted as uninfected controls. Five infected and three uninfected piglets were euthanased on the day of infection and at 7, 21, and 35days post-inoculation (PI).
Membrane-bound MUC4 and secreted MUC5AC were the predominant mucins produced in the bronchioles of the piglets in response to M. hyopneumoniae infection, but by day 35 PI, all labelled mucins had returned to pre-infection levels, contemporaneous with reduced pulmonary lesion scores. The increased mucin production may result from direct stimulation of the epithelium by mycoplasmal infection, or may arise indirectly following M. hyopneumoniae-induced ciliostasis.
Critical ultrasonography(CUS) is different from the traditional diagnostic ultrasound, the examiner and interpreter of the image are critical care medicine physicians. The core content of CUS is to ...evaluate the pathophysiological changes of organs and systems and etiology changes. With the idea of critical care medicine as the soul, it can integrate the above information and clinical information, bedside real-time diagnosis and titration treatment, and evaluate the therapeutic effect so as to improve the outcome. CUS is a traditional technique which is applied as a new application method. The consensus of experts on critical ultrasonography in China released in 2016 put forward consensus suggestions on the concept, implementation and application of CUS. It should be further emphasized that the accurate and objective assessment and implementation of CUS requires the standardization of ultrasound image acquisition and the need to establish a CUS procedure. At the same time, the standardized training for CUS acc
