Organized as part of the annual Art Days festival in the capital of the Latvian SSR, the First Exhibition of Approximate Art comprised a cacophonous and provocative mashup of music, dance, ...performance art, and design. At the center of the event was a demonstration of mixing and scratching records by Maximilian Lenz, also known as Westbam, one of the leading DJs in West Berlin. Mining archival sources in Berlin and Riga, this article reconstructs the complicated path by which the DJ came to perform at the event. It reveals a surprising network of relations and alliances operating in tandem behind the scenes, featuring a Riga artist dedicated to enacting a vision of postmodern performance in his city, an ambitiously networking émigré Latvian living in exile in West Germany, and a pair of Soviet offices under direct control of the KGB, charged with managing cultural exchanges with the West in hopes of currying sympathies for Soviet culture and policy. Complementing and extending research on the “gaps” and “holes” in the Soviet system that sometimes allowed for the staging of otherwise unacceptable works of art, the story of the First Exhibition of Approximate Art reveals how personal connections and interpersonal networks within even the most highly monitored parts of the system itself—the state security apparatus—could open doors for artistic projects unanticipated and even undesired by the bureaucratic state.

Abstract Context The optimal management strategy for men with newly diagnosed clinically localized prostate cancer remains a matter of debate. Numerous series have reported cancer control and ...quality-of-life (QoL) outcomes following treatment with radical prostatectomy (RP). Objective Critically review published oncologic and functional outcomes after RP, and evaluate factors associated with these outcome measures. Evidence acquisition A review of the literature was performed using the Medline and Web of Sciences databases. Relevant reports published between 1980 and 2011 identified using the keywords prostate cancer, radical prostatectomy, prostate-specific antigen, biochemical recurrence, incontinence , and erectile dysfunction were reviewed and summarized. Evidence synthesis Cancer control rates following RP largely depend on the definition of treatment efficacy. While up to 40% of men have been reported to experience postoperative biochemical recurrence on long-term follow-up, death from prostate cancer has been noted in <10% of men at 15 yr after surgery in contemporary series. For men with high-risk disease, surgery affords pathologic staging, thereby facilitating the selective application of secondary therapies, and has been associated with decreased mortality risk versus radiation in retrospective series. Reported functional outcomes after surgery, particularly urinary continence and erectile dysfunction, have varied greatly to date. These assessments have been limited by nonstandardized reporting methodology. The use of robot-assisted radical prostatectomy has increased in recent years, and while follow-up is thus far short, available data do not suggest the superiority of either approach in terms of functional or oncologic outcomes. Conclusions RP is associated with excellent long-term cancer control. Continued efforts to conduct prospective assessments of postoperative functional outcomes are necessary using validated QoL instruments. The importance of surgical approach will also require further study, incorporating comparative oncologic, functional, and economic data.
This article traces a largely forgotten history of the 1980s Soviet disco craze by following the work of one of its pioneering figures, the Latvian DJ, musician, and performance artist Hardijs Lediņš ...(1955–2004). It documents how the movement coalesced amidst creative responses to the gradual opening of the USSR to Western popular culture on the one hand, and to the unique affordances of local political, social, and technological structures on the other. In Lediņš’s case, the response was also shaped by commitments to an ideal of Soviet socialism that persisted despite the grim realities of Brezhnev-era society. Drawing on archival research and oral history, I begin in the loosely monitored space of the Student Club at the Riga Polytechnic Institute, where Lediņš’s talents and ties to elites enabled him to found a wildly popular discotheque in the 1974–75 academic year, one of the first of its kind in the USSR. I follow his increasing investment in a distinctly Soviet form of experimentalist performance art in the early 1980s, in which—inspired in part by local readings of John Cage—the ritualized trek into the countryside became a vehicle for attaining spiritual enlightenment in communion with others. Finally, I consider ways in which his ritual journeys inflected his disco operation in subsequent years, when he reframed his events as experiments in communality—specifically, as means of experiencing, at least for an evening, the enlightening promise of Soviet socialism undelivered by the state itself.

In his landmark study Inventing Eastern Europe (1994) the historian Larry Wolff documented the first attempts to partition the continent imaginatively into western and eastern domains. This ...partitioning, he argues, was undertaken by writers from the hubs of the European Enlightenment, who traveled into Imperial Russia and wrote about their experiences abroad. In their accounts of travel these writers “intellectually combined” easterly geographies and peoples “into a coherent whole” and compared that whole with westerly spaces, thereby “establishing the developmental division of the continent.” While Wolff’s analysis retains a central place in discourse on the Enlightenment, I suggest that its picture of Europe’s mapping is limited by its ocularcentric readings of period texts, and that a different picture emerges if we consider what travelers heard alongside what they saw. Focusing on accounts of listening provided by such travelers as Johann Gottfried Herder, the Hebraist Johann Joachim Bellermann, and the grammarian Gotthard Friedrich Stender, I discuss the way in which the aural registers of their experiences alternately enrich and confound ocularcentric accounts of Europe’s imaginary partition. Where travelers saw foreign peoples and scenes, they sometimes heard familiar musics; where they saw an undifferentiated mass of individuals, they often heard a diversity of voices. Drawing on work in sound and media studies, anthropology, and ethnomusicology, I suggest that travelers’ habits of listening deeply inflected their ethnographic imaginings, and vice versa—a situation that reveals the inventing of Eastern Europe to have been a more complex and conflicted project than is generally acknowledged today.
Primary prostatic adenocarcinoma (pPC) undergoes genomic evolution secondary to therapy-related selection pressures as it transitions to metastatic noncastrate (mNC-PC) and castrate resistant ...(mCR-PC) disease. Next generation sequencing results were evaluated for pPC (n = 97), locally advanced disease (involving urinary bladder/rectum, n = 12), mNC-PC (n = 21), and mCR-PC (n = 54). We identified enrichment of TP53 alterations in high-grade pPC, TP53/RB1 alterations in HGNE disease, and AR alterations in metastatic and castrate resistant disease. Actionable alterations (MSI-H phenotype and HRR genes) were identified in approximately a fifth of all cases. These results help elucidate the landscape of genomic alterations across the clinical spectrum of prostate cancer.
We determine the sensitivity and specificity of various assays for the detection of urothelial carcinoma.
A total of 280 voided urine specimens from 265 patients were obtained immediately before ...cystoscopy for BTA stat, (Bard Diagnostic, Redmond, Washington) hemoglobin dipstick, (Bayer, Elkhart, Indiana) telomerase and UroVysion (Vysis, a wholly owned subsidiary of Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, Illinois) analysis.
Of the 265 patients 75 had biopsy proven urothelial carcinoma, and the sensitivity of the assays was determined from these patients. From most sensitive to least sensitive, the overall sensitivity of UroVysion (73 cases), BTA stat (72), hemoglobin dipstick (73) and telomerase (70) was 81%, 78%, 74%, and 46%, respectively. Each of the first 3 tests was statistically significantly more sensitive than the telomerase assay (p <0.05). However, the differences in overall sensitivity of UroVysion, BTA stat and hemoglobin dipstick were not statistically significant. The specificity of the tests was calculated for 80 of the 265 patients in this study who had no history of urothelial carcinoma and negative cystoscopy findings despite common urological complaints. From most specific to least specific, the specificity of UroVysion, telomerase, BTA stat and hemoglobin dipstick was 96%, 91%, 74% and 51%, respectively. UroVysion and telomerase were statistically significantly (p <0.01) more specific than the BTA stat and hemoglobin dipstick assays, and all of the assays were more specific than hemoglobin dipstick testing (p <0.001).
Our study reveals that UroVysion is the most sensitive and specific assay among those tested for the detection of urothelial carcinoma. Telomerase testing had good specificity but poor sensitivity. The BTA stat and hemoglobin dipstick tests had good sensitivity but relatively poor specificity. UroVysion is a promising new assay for the detection of urothelial carcinoma in urine specimens. However, further studies are needed to explore the role of the various assays in the treatment of patients with superficial urothelial carcinoma.
We evaluated fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for assessing the response to therapy in patients with superficial bladder cancer receiving bacillus Calmette-Guerin or other intravesical ...therapies.
A total of 37 patients receiving intravesical therapy for superficial bladder cancer were enrolled in this study. Urine specimens were collected for FISH analysis just prior to the first intravesical therapy in 31 cases and just prior to or within 2 months following the last intravesical therapy in 37. FISH was done using the UroVysion probe set (Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, Illinois) with results considered positive if 5 or more cells demonstrated polysomy. Biopsy, cystoscopy and/or cytology results were then compared to FISH results to evaluate the usefulness of the test for monitoring intravesical therapy.
Of the patients 25 had a negative and 12 had a positive post-therapy FISH result. All 12 patients with a positive post-therapy FISH result had tumor recurrence, while tumor recurrence was observed in 13 of the 25 with a negative post-therapy FISH result (HR 4.6, 95% CI 1.9 to 11.1, p <0.001). Of the patients with tumor recurrence 7 of 12 with a positive post-therapy FISH result had muscle invasive tumor and 2 of 25 with a negative post-therapy FISH result had muscle invasive tumor (HR 9.4, 95% CI 1.9 to 45.3, p = 0.001).
FISH appears to be useful for monitoring patients with superficial bladder cancer for the response to intravesical therapy. Patients with a positive FISH result at the end of treatment are at high risk for progression to muscle invasive bladder cancer.
