The following examines the concept of time in Gadamer’s work, looking specifically at the role of artwork and festival as focal points of his temporal analysis. It is argued that the usual way of ...understanding Gadamer’s reflections on time as either “empty” or “fulfilled,” while accurate, need to be supplemented by a third species of time which is neither “full” nor “empty,” pointing instead to the underappreciated role of eternity in his thought. Eternity in this instance is not the other or the outside of time, as one finds in various traditional metaphysical determinations. It is rather intended as the vast and unending time of the cosmos, hinted at in the experience of artwork and festival.

The influence of Husserlian phenomenology on Hans-Georg Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics has been the subject of some analysis in the secondary literature, with scholars emphasizing both ...Gadamer's distance from traditional phenomenology as well as lamenting his insufficient phenomenological analyses. While Gadamer frequently cites Husserl's later analysis of the lifeworld in Truth and Method, and subsequently devotes a series of articles to Husserl's concept of the lifeworld, most commentators have either focused on Gadamer's break with the spirit and letter of Husserlian thought or on his dialogically oriented endorsement of Heidegger's phenomenological hermeneutics. Instead, this contribution will read Gadamer less as a variant of Heidegger, and will focus on Gadamer's late turn to the phenomenology of the lifeworld in his analysis of ritual and linguisticality. The following will not only pursue the throughway from phenomenology to hermeneutics, but also the way from hermeneutics back to a phenomenology of the linguistic and pre-linguistic lifeworld of experience.

The following examines Heidegger’s analysis of world and Dasein from a transcendental perspective. It is argued that Heidegger’s reflections on the interconnected themes of world and Dasein reveal ...the tensions that exist between the transcendental claims before and after
and the analysis of worldliness. It begins by looking at Heidegger’s early analysis of Husserl’s critique of psychologism and naturalism, assessing what this tells us about Heidegger’s analysis of world and nature. It subsequently addresses Heidegger’s transformation of Husserlian phenomenology, and intentionality in particular, arguing against interpreters who claim Heidegger’s interconnected concepts of Dasein and world are reducible to one another and hence phenomenologically problematic. In order to respond to this reading, the article examines the twin themes of, on the one hand, transcendental constitutive analysis in Heidegger’s work, Dasein as disclosive and ‘world entering’, and, on the other hand, the centrality of the world and the realm of nature as always more than Dasein’s constitutive relationship to it. In order to understand what Heidegger means by worldliness, the article will look at Heidegger’s reflections on nature as the world’s other, which nonetheless needs to be understood on the basis of worldliness.

The following will provide a hermeneutical examination of two experiences of time: time as taking-away and time as giving. It will attempt to address the interrelated issues of death, time, and the ...time of silence in order to see whether time should be viewed as an inevitable force that destroys everything in front of it, or whether another concept of time should be considered, one which comes from the other as the gift of time. It will be argued that the gift of time is only fully audible in the time of silence and that gratitude is most well-attuned response to such a time and to the time that precedes and exceeds us.
French novelist Marcel Proust made famous "involuntary memory, " a peculiar kind of memory that works whether one is willing or not and that gives a transformed recollection of past experience. More ...than a century later, the Proustian notion of involuntary memory has not been fully explored nor its implications understood. By providing clarifying examples taken from Proust's novel and by commenting on them using the work of French philosophers Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Gilles Deleuze, Italian philosopher Mauro Carbone interprets involuntary memory as the human faculty providing the involuntary creation of our ideas through the transformation of past experience. This rethinking of the traditional way of conceiving ideas and their genesis as separated from sensible experience—as has been done in Western thought since Plato—allows the author to promote a new theory of knowledge, one which is best exemplified via literature and art much more than philosophy.
This article examines Heidegger's assessment of negativity and finitude in the late 1930s and his enlargement of these issues in the name of a leap from one type of philosophy, one type of beginning, ...to a wholly other beginning. The guiding concerns of this article are negativity, finitude and the leap, and how these overlapping concerns coalesce around Heidegger's attempts to move towards a wholly other type of philosophy; in fact, one which no longer understands itself to be philosophy at all. The article concludes with a discussion of the role of death, sacrifice, and mourning in Heidegger's thought in the 1930s.
