This study evaluated bacterial isolates obtained during abdominal surgery and their relationship to short-term incisional complications. Samples of peritoneal fluid and from resection and/or ...enterotomy sites from 49 horses were cultured, with 96% having at least one positive culture result. The most common isolates were Escherichia coli, Streptococcus spp, and Enterococcus spp. Horses with small intestinal resections were more likely to grow obligate anaerobes and enteric organisms. Horses with small intestinal lesions (+/- resection) were more likely to grow enteric organisms and less likely to grow non-enteric organisms. Horses without enterotomy or resection procedures were more likely to grow 3 isolates and did not grow obligate anaerobes. The continued incisional drainage rate was 10%. Horses with preoperative peripheral leukocyte counts >8,500 cells/ul were more likely to develop incisional drainage. Many horses undergoing abdominal surgery may have positive intraoperative culture results. Our results did not provide evidence for the routine use of intraoperative culture to predict short-term incisional complications. Further studies are needed to evaluate the value of intraoperative culture in horses at high risk for incisional complications.
A 7-month-old Appaloosa foal had bilateral hind limb lameness and was unable to rise from recumbency without assistance. Lameness could be exacerbated by tarsal flexion and a firm swelling at the ...distomedial aspect of the tibias was associated with a marked pain response when palpated. Radiography revealed enlargement of the distal tibial metaphysis physis (compared with normal), and radiolucent fissure lines extending proximally from the physis into the metaphysis at its medial aspect. Treatment included rest and dietary adjustment. Although clinical signs initially resolved following treatment, the problem recurred when the foal was 14 months old. Further treatment included 7 months of pasture rest without forced exercise, after which the foal was reported to be clinically normal.
Background
Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) are relatively common, although optimal rehabilitation is unknown. This review aims to characterize the published rehabilitation regimens utilized for ...PHFs.
Methods
A systematic review was performed per PRISMA guidelines, utilizing PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane. All studies reporting PHF rehabilitation protocols after nonoperative management, open reduction internal fixation with a plate, or intramedullary nailing were included.
Results
Forty articles comprising 3507 patients (66% female, weighted mean age 63.5 years) were included. Substantial variability was present regardless of management. Rehabilitation modalities reported were: sling use in 34 cohorts, most commonly for three weeks; pendulum exercises in 21 cohorts, most commonly starting at post-intervention day 1; post-intervention passive range of motion (ROM) for 30 cohorts, most commonly starting at two days; active-ROM in eight cohorts, most commonly starting at three weeks; active-assisted ROM for 21 cohorts, most commonly starting at three weeks; unlimited ROM for 20 cohorts, most commonly at 4 or 6 weeks; non-weight-bearing for six cohorts, most commonly for six weeks; strengthening for 16 cohorts, most commonly at six weeks; removal of all restrictions for nine cohorts, most commonly starting at six weeks.
Conclusions
Published rehabilitation protocols for PHFs vary considerably regardless of management. Future studies comparing methods of management need to consider the influence of postoperative rehabilitation protocol heterogeneity when aggregating data from multiple sites.

The effects of balancing the foot and shoeing (B&S) on the kinematics of five Quarter Horses with navicular disease were evaluated using computerized gait analysis. Kinematic measurements of the ...right forelimb and head were made before and after palmar digital nerve block (PDNB) and before and after B&S of the forelimb feet. Carpal and fetlock joint angle, foot displacement, and temporal gait measurements were made for at least five strides in each horse trotting on a treadmill. Kinematic measurements were compared before and after PDNB and before and after B&S by analysis of variance with an α=0.05. The most significant kinematic changes seen after PDNB were in the vertical head movement parameters studied. Total vertical head excursion and measures of head height asymmetry between right and left forelimb stance phases decreased after PDNB. After B&S mean carpal flexion and maximum hoof height during the swing phase of the stride increased, but none of the head movement parameters significantly changed. Results of this study indicate that the ability of treadmill kinematic gait analysis to evaluate for improvement in lameness by monitoring vertical head movement parameters is not significantly affected in horses with navicular disease three weeks after balancing and shoeing the forelimb feet.
The owlet moths (Noctuoidea; ~43–45K described species) are one of the most ecologically diverse and speciose superfamilies of animals. Moreover, they comprise some of the world's most notorious ...pests of agriculture and forestry. Despite their contributions to terrestrial biodiversity and impacts on ecosystems and economies, the evolutionary history of Noctuoidea remains unclear because the superfamily lacks a statistically robust phylogenetic and temporal framework. We reconstructed the phylogeny of Noctuoidea using data from 1234 genes (946.4 kb nucleotides) obtained from the genome and transcriptome sequences of 76 species. The relationships among the six families of Noctuoidea were well resolved and consistently recovered based on both concatenation and gene coalescence approaches, supporting the following relationships: Oenosandridae + (Notodontidae + (Erebidae + (Nolidae + (Euteliidae + Noctuidae))). A Yule tree prior with three unlinked molecular clocks was identified as the preferred BEAST analysis using marginal‐likelihood estimations. The crown age of Noctuoidea was estimated at 74.5 Ma, with most families originating before the end of the Paleogene (23 Ma). Our study provides the first statistically robust phylogenetic and temporal framework for Noctuoidea, including all families of owlet moths, based on large‐scale genomic data.
We retrospectively evaluated the medical records and obtained follow-up information for nine horses which had been treated for cecocolic intussusception (CCI) between January 1982 and April 1998. ...During the 16-year study period, CCI was diagnosed in nine of 748 horses in which exploratory celiotomy was undertaken for abdominal pain, representing an incidence of 1.2%. Most affected horses (78%) were less than four years of age (median age was 12 months, age range was five months to 15 years). Cecocolic intussusception affected male horses (78%) more commonly than female horses. The most common clinical presentation was abdominal pain of a severe, acute nature or milder but recurrent signs of abdominal pain persisting in spite of conservative treatment for several days. Correction of CCI by either simple reduction or reduction followed by partial typhlectomy was successful if compromise of the intestine by devitalization and adhesion formation was not found at surgery. Definitive diagnosis of CCI necessitates exploratory celiotomy, although an ultrasonographic examination of the abdomen may confirm the diagnosis in some cases. When recognized early during the course of disease, surgical correction of CCI is associated with a favorable outcome; of the eight horses which underwent surgery in our series, five horses (63%) survived surgical correction of CCI. Handling of compromised gut during reduction of CCI necessitates extreme caution because the risk of intestinal tearing is quite high.
The first U.S. case of COVID-19 attributed to the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) was reported on December 1, 2021 (1), and by the week ending December 25, 2021, ...Omicron was the predominant circulating variant in the United States.* Although COVID-19-associated hospitalizations are more frequent among adults,
COVID-19 can lead to severe outcomes in children and adolescents (2). This report analyzes data from the Coronavirus Disease 19-Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network (COVID-NET)
to describe COVID-19-associated hospitalizations among U.S. children (aged 0-11 years) and adolescents (aged 12-17 years) during periods of Delta (July 1-December 18, 2021) and Omicron (December 19, 2021-January 22, 2022) predominance. During the Delta- and Omicron-predominant periods, rates of weekly COVID-19-associated hospitalizations per 100,000 children and adolescents peaked during the weeks ending September 11, 2021, and January 8, 2022, respectively. The Omicron variant peak (7.1 per 100,000) was four times that of the Delta variant peak (1.8), with the largest increase observed among children aged 0-4 years.
During December 2021, the monthly hospitalization rate among unvaccinated adolescents aged 12-17 years (23.5) was six times that among fully vaccinated adolescents (3.8). Strategies to prevent COVID-19 among children and adolescents, including vaccination of eligible persons, are critical.*.

To evaluate distribution and intensity of 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) uptake in the navicular area in horses with forelimb lameness isolated to the palmar aspect of the foot.
...Prospective, case-controlled study.
7 horses with clinical signs of navicular syndrome and 7 control horses.
Palmar view, soft tissue-phase scintigraphic images of the foot were obtained between 7 and 12 minutes after injection of 120 to 170 mCi of 99mTc-MDP. Lateral and palmar view, bone-phase images were obtained at 30 minutes and 1, 2, and 4 hours after injection. Palmar views were evaluated by determining the ratio of image density in the navicular area to mean image density in the distal phalangeal area. Palmar and lateral view, bone-phase images were also scored on the basis of navicular area intensity (intense = 3, moderate = 2, mild = 1, and no uptake = 0). Density ratios and mean scores were evaluated as a three-way ANOVA.
Mean navicular-to-distal phalangeal density ratio for affected horses (1.77) was significantly (P = 0.003) greater than that for control horses (0.97). The mean subjective score for affected horses when evaluating palmar views only (1.85) and when evaluating palmar and lateral view pairs together (1.99) was significantly (P < 0.01) higher than scores for control horses (0.51, 0.62). Images obtained 1 hour after injection were as good at differentiating affected from control horses as images obtained between 2 to 4 hours after injection.
A substantial number of horses with palmar foot pain have increased scintigraphic uptake within the navicular bone 1 to 4 hours after injection of 99mTc-MDP. Lateral view, bone-phase images are less sensitive than palmar view, bone-phase images in revealing navicular area uptake.
A combination of lateral and palmar view scintigraphic images obtained between 1 and 4 hours after injection of 99mTc-MDP is a useful diagnostic aid in evaluating navicular bone involvement in horses with forelimb lameness isolated to the palmar aspect of the foot.
Gold shops in artisanal and small-scale gold mining communities represent major point sources of airborne mercury pollution. Concentrations of elemental mercury (Hg0) emitted by these shops can be ...determined using a portable atomic absorbance spectrometer (AAS) with Zeeman correction. These measured Hg0 concentrations can then be correlated to position as determined by a hand-held GPS unit, and the resulting data mapped using a Geographic Information System (GIS). A detailed method for obtaining and analyzing data collected near gold shops in Mazuko, Peru is provided. Maps generated using this method were employed to identify point sources of Hg0 contamination originating from gold shops in ASGM communities and were shared with local city managers to assist in urban planning.•A detailed method is provided to collect and process data, ultimately generating a map that allows for the screening of a community to identify point sources of Hg0 contamination.•Raw data is provided, as well as a video detailing data processing and mapping using a common spreadsheet program and an open-source GIS.•The generated map can be used for determining areas where people may be exposed to elevated Hg0 concentrations and/or occupational mercury vapor exposure, targeted enforcement, or outreach to limit Hg0 pollution.

BACKGROUNDSingle-level lumbar degenerative disc disease (DDD) remains a significant cause of morbidity in adulthood. Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) and Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion ...(TLIF) are surgical techniques developed to treat this condition. With limited studies on intermediate term outcomes in a single cohort, we compare radiographic and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing ALIF and TLIF. METHODSA retrospective chart review was performed on 164 patients (111 TLIF; 53 ALIF) over a 60-month period. X-ray radiographs obtained pre-operatively, prior to discharge, and at one year were utilized for radiographic assessment. Segmental lordosis, lumbar lordosis and HRQOL scores were measured preoperatively and at one-year timepoints. RESULTSChanges in lumbar lordosis and segmental lordosis were significantly greater after ALIF (4.6° vs. -0.6°, P=0.05; 4.7° vs. -0.7°, P<0.05) at one year (mean time, 366±20 days). At one year or greater, there was a greater reduction in mean VAS-leg score in TLIF patients (3.4 vs. 0.6, P<0.05) and ODI score (16.2 vs. 5.4, P<0.05). Similar outcomes were seen for VAS-back, SF-12 Physical Health, and SRS-30 Function/Activity. SF-12 Mental Health scores were found to be lower in patients undergoing TLIF (-3.5 vs. 2.7, P<0.05). CONCLUSIONSALIF demonstrated a superior method of increasing lumbar and segmental lordosis. TLIF was utilized more in patients with higher pre-operative VAS-leg pain scores and therefore, showed a greater magnitude of VAS-leg pain improvement. TLIF also demonstrated a greater improvement in ODI scores despite similar baseline scores, suggesting a possible enhanced functional outcome.
