COSINE is a dark matter search experiment based on an array of low background NaI(Tl) crystals located at the Yangyang underground laboratory. The assembly of COSINE-100 was completed in the summer ...of 2016 and the detector is currently collecting physics quality data aimed at reproducing the DAMA/LIBRA experiment that reported an annual modulation signal. Stable operation has been achieved and will continue for at least 2 years. Here, we describe the design of COSINE-100, including the shielding arrangement, the configuration of the NaI(Tl) crystal detection elements, the veto systems, and the associated operational systems, and we show the current performance of the experiment.

Introduction
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the trends in the incidence and mortality of hip fracture between 2008 and 2012 and predict the number of hip fractures in Korea through 2025 using nationwide claims data.
Methods
The data managed by the National Health Insurance Service were used to identify the hip fractures in patients aged >50 years between 2008 and 2012. Projections of hip fractures were conducted using the Poisson distribution from 2016 to 2025 in Korea.
Results
The incidence of hip fractures (per 100,000) increased by 14.1 % over the 5 years of the study, by 15.8 % in women and 10.9 % in men; the older age group showed a steep rise and shift in the incidence from 2008 to 2012. The cumulative mortality rates at 1 year after hip fractures were 17.2 % (3575/20,849) in 2008 and 16.0 % (4547/28,426) in 2012. Overall standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) for hip fracture were higher in men (11.93) than in women (11.22) and were higher than those in the general population in all age groups. In 2016, the total number of hip fractures was estimated to increase an overall of 1.4 times by 2025.
Conclusions
The incidence of hip fracture continues to increase, and the related mortality is still high, although it has decreased over time. The socioeconomic burden of hip fracture is expected to increase in Korea along with the increased estimated number of fractures. Nationwide strategies should include attempts to reduce the future socioeconomic burdens of hip fractures.
The COSINE-100 dark matter search experiment is an array of NaI(Tl) crystal detectors located in the Yangyang Underground Laboratory (Y2L). To understand measured backgrounds in the NaI(Tl) crystals ...we have performed Monte Carlo simulations using the Geant4 toolkit and developed background models for each crystal that consider contributions from both internal and external sources, including cosmogenic nuclides. The background models are based on comparisons of measurement data with Monte Carlo simulations that are guided by a campaign of material assays and are used to evaluate backgrounds and identify their sources. The average background level for the six crystals (70 kg total mass) that are studied is 3.5 counts/day/keV/kg in the (2–6) keV energy interval. Development of advanced high energy density lithium ion batteries is important for promoting electromobility. Making electric vehicles attractive and competitive compared to conventional automobiles ...depends on the availability of reliable, safe, high power, and highly energetic batteries whose components are abundant and cost effective. Nickel rich LiNi x Co y Mn 1−x−y O 2 layered cathode materials ( x > 0.5) are of interest because they can provide very high specific capacity without pushing charging potentials to levels that oxidize the electrolyte solutions. However, these cathode materials suffer from stability problems. We discovered that doping these materials with tungsten (1 mol%) remarkably increases their stability due to a partial layered to cubic (rock salt) phase transition. We demonstrate herein highly stable Li ion battery prototypes consisting of tungsten-stabilized Ni rich cathode materials ( x > 0.9) with specific capacities >220 mA h g -1 . This development can increase the energy density of Li ion batteries more than 30% above the state of the art without compromising durability.

The 2022 Roadmap is the next update in the series of Plasma Roadmaps published by
Journal of Physics
D with the intent to identify important outstanding challenges in the field of ...low-temperature plasma (LTP) physics and technology. The format of the Roadmap is the same as the previous Roadmaps representing the visions of 41 leading experts representing 21 countries and five continents in the various sub-fields of LTP science and technology. In recognition of the evolution in the field, several new topics have been introduced or given more prominence. These new topics and emphasis highlight increased interests in plasma-enabled additive manufacturing, soft materials, electrification of chemical conversions, plasma propulsion, extreme plasma regimes, plasmas in hypersonics, data-driven plasma science and technology and the contribution of LTP to combat COVID-19. In the last few decades, LTP science and technology has made a tremendously positive impact on our society. It is our hope that this roadmap will help continue this excellent track record over the next 5–10 years.
Background: The aim of this study was to determine whether expressions of the excision repair cross-complementing (ERCC1), thymidylate synthase (TS), and glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1) predict ...clinical outcome in patients with advanced gastric cancer treated with fluorouracil (5-fluorouracil)/oxaliplatin chemotherapy. Patients and methods: The study population consisted of 64 advanced gastric cancer patients (median age 51 years). Patients were treated with oxaliplatin 85 mg/m2 as a 2-h infusion at day 1 plus leucovorin 20 mg/m2 over 10 min, followed by 5-FU bolus 400 mg/m2 and 22-h continuous infusion of 600 mg/m2 at days 1–2. Treatment was repeated in 2-week intervals. The expressions of ERCC1, TS, and GSTP1 of primary tumors were examined by immunohistochemistry. Results: The positive rates of ERCC1, TS, and GSTP1 were 70.3%, 29.7%, and 50.0%, respectively. The patients without ERCC1 expression were more likely to respond to chemotherapy (P = 0.045). There were no significant differences between response and TS or GSTP1 expression pattern (P = 0.813, P = 0.305, respectively). Median overall survival (OS) was significantly longer in patients without ERCC1 expression (P = 0.0396). TS or GSTP1 expression were not related to survival (P = 0.4578, P = 0.8121, respectively). Multivariate analysis revealed that ERCC1 expression significantly impacted on OS (hazard ratio 1.92, P = 0.037). Conclusion: Immunohistochemical studies for ERCC1 may be useful in prediction of the clinical outcome in advanced gastric cancer patients treated with 5-FU and oxaliplatin.
Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) virus has a variety of central nervous system (CNS) manifestations. However, there are limited data regarding SFTS-associated ...encephalopathy/encephalitis (SFTSAE) and its mechanism.
All patients with confirmed SFTS who underwent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination due to suspected acute encephalopathy were enrolled in three referral hospitals between January 2013 and October 2016. Real-time RT-PCR for SFTS virus and chemokine/cytokines levels from blood and CSF were analysed.
Of 41 patients with confirmed SFTS by RT-PCR for SFTS virus using blood samples, 14 (34%) underwent CSF examination due to suspected SFTSAE. All 14 patients with SFTSE revealed normal protein and glucose levels in CSF, and CSF pleocytosis was uncommon (29%, 4/14). Of the eight patients whose CSF was available for further analysis, six (75%) yielded positive results for SFTS virus. Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) level in CSF were significantly higher than those in serum (geometric mean 1889 pg/mL in CSF versus 264 pg/mL in serum for MCP-1, p = 0.01, and geometric mean 340 pg/mL in CSF versus 71 pg/mL in serum for IL-8, p = 0.004).
The CNS manifestation of SFTS as acute encephalopathy/encephalitis is a common complication of SFTS. Although meningeal inflammation was infrequent in patients with SFTSAE, SFTS virus was frequently detected in CSF with elevated MCP-1 and IL-8. These findings indicate that possible direct invasion of the CNS by SFTS virus with the associated elevated cytokine levels in CSF may play an important role in the pathogenesis of SFTSAE.
The Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) is an ultrahigh energy (UHE, > 1017 eV) neutrino detector designed to observe neutrinos by searching for the radio waves emitted by the relativistic products of ...neutrino-nucleon interactions in Antarctic ice. In this paper, we present constraints on the diffuse flux of ultrahigh energy neutrinos between 1016 and 1021 eV resulting from a search for neutrinos in two complementary analyses, both analyzing four years of data (2013–2016) from the two deep stations (A2, A3) operating at that time. We place a 90% CL upper limit on the diffuse all flavor neutrino flux at 1018 eV of EF(E) = 5.6 × 10−16 cm−2 s−1 sr−1. This analysis includes four times the exposure of the previous ARA result and represents approximately 1 / 5 th the exposure expected from operating ARA until the end of 2022.
ABSTRACT We present ground-based optical photometric monitoring data for NGC 5548, part of an extended multiwavelength reverberation mapping campaign. The light curves have nearly daily cadence from ...2014 January to July in nine filters (BVRI and ugriz). Combined with ultraviolet data from the Hubble Space Telescope and Swift, we confirm significant time delays between the continuum bands as a function of wavelength, extending the wavelength coverage from 1158 Å to the z band (~9160 Å). We find that the lags at wavelengths longer than the V band are equal to or greater than the lags of high-ionization-state emission lines (such as He ii λ 1640 and λ 4686 ), suggesting that the continuum-emitting source is of a physical size comparable to the inner broad-line region (BLR). The trend of lag with wavelength is broadly consistent with the prediction for continuum reprocessing by an accretion disk with τ ∝ λ 4 / 3 . However, the lags also imply a disk radius that is 3 times larger than the prediction from standard thin-disk theory, assuming that the bolometric luminosity is 10% of the Eddington luminosity ( L = 0.1 L Edd ). Using optical spectra from the Large Binocular Telescope, we estimate the bias of the interband continuum lags due to BLR emission observed in the filters. We find that the bias for filters with high levels of BLR contamination (~20%) can be important for the shortest continuum lags and likely has a significant impact on the u and U bands owing to Balmer continuum emission.
Claudins (CLDNs) are a family of integral membrane proteins central to the formation of tight junctions, structures that are involved in paracellular transport and cellular growth and ...differentiation, and are critical for the maintenance of cellular polarity. Recent studies have provided evidence that CLDNs are aberrantly expressed in diverse types of human cancers, including hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs). However, little is known about how CLDN expression is involved in cancer progression. In this study, we show that CLDN1 has a causal role in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in human liver cells, and that the c-Abl-Ras-Raf-1-ERK1/2 signaling axis is critical for the induction of malignant progression by CLDN1. Overexpression of CLDN1 induced expression of the EMT-regulating transcription factors Slug and Zeb1, and thereby led to repression of E-cadherin, β-catenin expression, enhanced expression of N-cadherin and Vimentin, a loss of cell adhesion, and increased cell motility in normal liver cells and HCC cells. In line with these findings, inhibition of either c-Abl or ERK clearly attenuated CLDN1-induced EMT, as evidenced by a reversal of N-cadherin and E-cadherin expression patterns, and restored normal motility. Collectively, these results indicate that CLDN1 is necessary for the induction of EMT in human liver cells, and that activation of the c-Abl-Ras-Raf-1-ERK1/2 signaling pathway is required for CLDN1-induced acquisition of the malignant phenotype. The present observations suggest that CLDN1 could be exploited as a biomarker for liver cancer metastasis and might provide a pivotal point for therapeutic intervention in HCC.
