A bioinspired microhairy sensor is developed to enable ultraconformability on nonflat surfaces and significant enhancement in the signal‐to‐noise ratio of the retrieved signals. The device shows ≈12 ...times increase in the signal‐to‐noise ratio in the generated capacitive signals, allowing the ultraconformal microhair pressure sensors to be capable of measuring weak pulsations of internal jugular venous pulses stemming from a human neck.
An electronic (e‐) skin is expected to experience significant wear and tear over time. Therefore, self‐healing stretchable materials that are simultaneously soft and with high fracture energy, that ...is high tolerance of damage or small cracks without propagating, are essential requirements for the realization of robust e‐skin. However, previously reported elastomers and especially self‐healing polymers are mostly viscoelastic and lack high mechanical toughness. Here, a new class of polymeric material crosslinked through rationally designed multistrength hydrogen bonding interactions is reported. The resultant supramolecular network in polymer film realizes exceptional mechanical properties such as notch‐insensitive high stretchability (1200%), high toughness of 12 000 J m−2, and autonomous self‐healing even in artificial sweat. The tough self‐healing materials enable the wafer‐scale fabrication of robust and stretchable self‐healing e‐skin devices, which will provide new directions for future soft robotics and skin prosthetics.

Antimicrobial stewardship programmes (ASPs) are suggested as a vital strategy to address antimicrobial resistance.
To examine the current status of ASPs in Korean hospitals, to identify problems and ...challenges for the implementation of proper ASPs, and to provide a reference for developing more effective ASP policies.
A questionnaire based on the ‘Seven Core Elements of Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programs’ from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was developed, modified from the previous questionnaire on ASPs in Korea, 2015. ASP-participating physicians such as infectious disease specialists (IDSs), paediatric IDSs, and directors of infection control departments were targeted. Only one ASP-associated physician per hospital participated in the survey.
The survey response rate was 88.4% (84/95). The median number of medical personnel participating in ASPs was 3 (interquartile range (IQR): 1–5), most of whom were IDS (median: 2; IQR: 1–2). Only 6.0% (5/84) of hospitals had full-time workers for ASPs. Whereas restrictive measures for designated antimicrobials were widely implemented among Korean hospitals (88.1%, 74/84), the proportion of hospitals with interventions for inappropriate long-term antimicrobial use and a conversion strategy from parenteral to oral antimicrobial administration was only 9.5% (8/84) and 1.2% (1/84), respectively. Lack of time, personnel, and appropriate compensation was perceived as the major barrier to establishing an ASP in Korean hospitals.
ASPs in Korean hospitals were primarily carried out by one or two IDSs, and programmes mostly comprised restrictive measures for designated antimicrobials. National-level support to implement appropriate ASPs in Korean hospitals is necessary.
Background
National Health Insurance (NHI) claim records could provide valuable data for epidemiological studies of asthma in Korea. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of adult ...asthma and to investigate asthma‐related healthcare use and prescription patterns in Korea over 5 years.
Methods
National Health Insurance claim records from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2010 were analyzed in a retrospective, population‐based study. Outcome measures included asthma prevalence, healthcare use, and prescription patterns over time, by type of hospital, and by medical specialty. Additionally, we assessed differences in healthcare use between newly diagnosed and previously diagnosed patients in 2009.
Results
Over 5 years, the prevalence of asthma among Korean adults increased from 4944 to 5707 cases per 100 000 population (from 3760 to 4445 in men and from 6108 to 6951 in women). Asthma‐related outpatient visits decreased from 4.82 ± 8.02 to 3.44 ± 5.50. Approximately 3% of all patients were hospitalized and 2.4% received asthma‐related emergency treatment each year. Pulmonary function tests were performed in 10–11% of patients an average of 1.3 times per year. Newly diagnosed patients experienced fewer asthma‐related hospitalizations (1.78% vs 4.35%) and emergency department visits (0.80% vs 2.11%) than the previously diagnosed group. Prescriptions of inhaled corticosteroids‐based inhalers were maintained with about 20% of average of all types of hospitals.
Conclusions
The prevalence of asthma in Korea has increased over a recent 5‐year period, and asthma is still suboptimally controlled. Public health strategies are needed to improve the management of asthma in adults.
Molecular quantum magnetism involving an isolated spin state is of particular interest due to the characteristic quantum phenomena underlying spin qubits or molecular spintronics for quantum ...information devices, as demonstrated in magnetic metal-organic molecular systems, the so-called molecular magnets. Here we report the molecular quantum magnetism realized in an inorganic solid Ba3Yb2Zn5O11 with spin-orbit coupled pseudospin-½ Yb(3+) ions. The magnetization represents the magnetic quantum values of an isolated Yb4 tetrahedron with a total (pseudo)spin 0, 1 and 2. Inelastic neutron scattering results reveal that a large Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction originating from strong spin-orbit coupling of Yb 4f is a key ingredient to explain magnetic excitations of the molecular magnet states. The Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction allows a non-adiabatic quantum transition between avoided crossing energy levels, and also results in unexpected magnetic behaviours in conventional molecular magnets.

The RAON is the name of the heavy ion accelerator facility under construction in Korea that includes the In-flight Fragment (IF) and Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) facilities to support ...cutting-edge research in various science fields. The superconducting linac is the driver for the IF facility that can accelerate beams from proton to uranium with 200 MeV/u, 400 kW (for uranium beam). A 70-MeV, 1-mA H

cyclotron is the driver for the ISOL facility and is followed by a post-accelerator consisting of s superconducting linac that can accelerate rare-isotope (RI) beams and deliver them to experimental halls. These facilities provide high-intensity stable ion and rare isotope (RI) beams for domestic and international users. In this paper, design and prototyping efforts for the RAON accelerator systems are presented.
The risk of bleeding after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in patients with early gastric neoplasms who do not discontinue aspirin for the procedure has not been established. We aimed to ...investigate whether post-ESD gastric bleeding is increased in patients who take aspirin.
Patients who underwent ESD for early gastric neoplasms at the National Cancer Center Hospital, Korea, between November 2008 and January 2011 were enrolled. The risk of post-ESD bleeding was evaluated using Poisson regression analysis.
We categorized 514 patients into three groups according to aspirin intake at the time of the procedure: patients who never used aspirin (n=439), patients who interrupted aspirin use for 7 days or more (n=56), and patients who continuously used aspirin (n=19). Post-ESD bleeding occurred in 4.1% (21/514) overall, and was more frequent in continuous aspirin users (4/19 21.1%) than in those who never used aspirin (15/439 3.4%) (P=0.006) and those with interrupted aspirin use (2/56 3.6%) (P=0.033). Multivariate analysis showed that use of aspirin by itself was associated with post-ESD bleeding (relative risk RR 4.49; 95% confidence interval 95%CI 1.09-18.38). The resumption of clopidogrel combined with aspirin use (RR 26.71, 95%CI 7.09-100.53), and increased iatrogenic ulcer size (RR 1.52, 95%CI 1.14-2.02), were significantly associated with post-ESD bleeding.
Continuous aspirin use increases the risk of bleeding after gastric ESD. Aspirin use should be stopped in patients with a low risk for thromboembolic disease to minimize bleeding complications.
We investigated the relationship between the prognostic importance of anatomic tumour burden and subtypes of breast cancer using data from the Korean Breast Cancer Registry Database. In HR+/HER2+ and ...HR-/HER2-tumours, an increase in T stage profoundly increased the hazard of death, while the presence of lymph node metastasis was more important in HR+/HER2+ and HR-/HER2+ tumours among 131,178 patients with stage I-III breast cancer. The patterns of increasing mortality risk and tumour growth (per centimetre) and metastatic nodes (per node) were examined in 67,038 patients with a tumour diameter ≤ 7 cm and < 8 metastatic nodes. HR+/HER2- and HR-/HER2- tumours showed a persistent increase in mortality risk with an increase in tumour diameter, while the effect was modest in HER2+ tumours. Conversely, an increased number of metastatic nodes was accompanied by a persistently increased risk in HR-/HER2+ tumours, while the effect was minimal for HR-/HER2- tumours with > 3 or 4 nodes. The interactions between the prognostic significance of anatomic tumour burden and subtypes were significant. The prognostic relevance of the anatomic tumour burden was non-linear and highly dependent on the subtypes of breast cancer.
Background
With the widespread use of endoscopy, small and low‐grade type 3 gastric neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) are increasingly being detected. The clinicopathological features, biological ...behaviour and appropriate treatment strategy for these NETs remain unclear.
Methods
Patients with biopsy‐proven gastric NET and a normal fasting serum gastrin level were identified from a prospectively maintained database. Clinicopathological features and long‐term outcome of local resection for type 3 NETs were reviewed retrospectively and compared according to tumour grade.
Results
Some 32 patients with type 3 gastric NETs were included (25 patients with NET grade G1, 5 with G2 and 2 with G3). Pathological tumour size was 2·0 cm or less in 30 patients. All tumours were well differentiated, even G3 lesions, and all tumours but one were confined to the submucosal layer. G1 NETs were significantly smaller and had a significantly lower lymphovascular invasion rate than G2 and G3 NETs. Twenty‐two patients with a G1 NET without lymphovascular invasion were treated with wedge or endoscopic resection. After a median follow‐up of 59 (range 6–102) months, no patient with a G1 NET of 1·5 cm or smaller developed recurrence and one patient with a G1 NET larger than 1·5 cm had recurrence in a perigastric lymph node. Among seven patients with a G2 or G3 NET, two had lymph node metastasis and one had liver metastases.
Conclusion
Low‐grade type 3 gastric NET has non‐aggressive features and a favourable prognosis. Wedge or endoscopic resection may be a valid option for patients with type 3 gastric G1 NET no larger than 1·5 cm without lymphovascular invasion.
Limited resection suffices in selected patients
