Aim
To identify a serial multiple mediation effect of social support in online health communities and collective empowerment on the relationship between diabetes‐related burden (DRB) and ...self‐efficacy, among mothers using a continuous glucose monitoring device for children with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
Design
A secondary analysis, cross‐sectional, descriptive study.
Methods
Data were obtained from 198 mothers of children with T1D via a web survey, from August to September 2020. Measures used were the Collective Empowerment in the Online Health Community Scale, a modified version of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Problem Areas in Diabetes Survey—Parent Revised version and a modified version of the Maternal Self‐efficacy for Diabetes Management Scale. Data were analysed using SPSS 25.0, and PROCESS MACRO for SPSS v3.5.
Results
A serial multiple mediation model was used. The indirect effects of both social support in online health communities and collective empowerment were identified in the relationship between DRB and diabetes self‐efficacy (DSE). However, there was no indirect effect of social support in online health communities on these relationships.
Conclusion
These findings suggest that online social support alone has a limited role in chronic disease management self‐efficacy. Collective empowerment should be a strategic component in intervention development using online health communities to strengthen DSE in mothers of children with T1D.
Impact
This study provides novel insights into the functional mechanism of online health communities for T1D. Peer mentor coaching by parents of children with T1D effectively helps other children's parents with its recent diagnosis. The findings recognize a need for strategies enhancing collective empowerment among parents of children with T1D. Along with peer coaching, these strategies should strengthen knowledge of resources and methods to impact social change as well as resource mobilization for collective actions.
We aimed to identify whether neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are more useful predictors after initial intention to treat than at the time of diagnosis.
We ...collected the medical data of 533 patients. The results of the peripheral blood sampling before the primary treatments were labeled as initial cohort, and those obtained between 24 and 36 months after initial treatment were defined as the 2nd cohort. Delayed metastasis has been defined as distant metastasis 2 years after treatment, and survival outcome was estimated and compared across groups.
Median follow-up duration was 74 months (24-162 months), and 53 patients experienced delayed metastasis. In univariate analysis, metastasis-free survival, patient age at diagnosis, tumor size, axillary lymph node metastasis, HER-2 status, initial NLR and PLR, and 2nd NLR and PLR were found to be significantly associated with delayed metastasis. However, in multivariate analysis, only the 2nd NLR and PLR were found to be significantly associated with delayed metastasis, excluding initial NLR and PLR. Metastasis-free survival was analyzed through the pattern changes of NLR or PLR. The results revealed that patients with continued low NLR and PLR values at pre- and post-treatment (low initial values and 2nd values) showed a significantly better prognosis than those with a change in value or continued high NLR and PLR.
We identified that patients with persistent high NLR and PLR after initial treatment have significant worse prognosis in terms of late metastasis. Therefore, these results suggest that NLR and PLR are more useful in predicting prognosis post-treatment.

Ordering of semiconducting polymers in thin films from the nano to microscale is strongly correlated with charge transport properties as well as organic field‐effect transistor performance. This ...paper reports a method to control nano to microscale ordering of poly{N,N′‐bis(2‐octyldodecyl)‐naphthalene‐1,4,5,8‐bis(dicarboximide)‐2,6‐diyl‐alt‐5,5′‐(2,2′‐bithiophene)} (P(NDI2OD‐T2)) thin films by precisely regulating the solidification rate from the metastable state just before crystallization. The proposed simple but effective approach, kinetically controlled crystallization, achieves optimized P(NDI2OD‐T2) films with large polymer domains, long range ordered fibrillar structures, and molecular orientation preferable for electron transport leading to dramatic morphological changes in both polymer domain sizes at the micrometer scale and molecular packing structures at nanoscales. Structural changes significantly increase electron mobilities up to 3.43 ± 0.39 cm2 V−1 s−1 with high reliability, almost two orders of enhancement compared with devices from naturally dried films. Small contact resistance is also obtained for electron injection (0.13 MΩ cm), low activation energy (62.51 meV), and narrow density of states distribution for electron transport in optimized thin films. It is believed that this study offers important insight into the crystallization of conjugated polymers that can be broadly applied to optimize the morphology of semiconducting polymer films for solution processed organic electronic devices.
An optimized film morphology of n‐type conjugated polymers is obtained by precisely regulating the solidification rate in the metastable state using a novel and simple method. Dramatic morphological changes in both polymer domain sizes and molecular packing structures lead to narrow density of states distribution and electron mobilities up to 3.99 cm2 V−1 s−1.
Tumor recurrence by obtaining chemoresistance is a major obstacle to treating ovarian cancer. By TargetScan database and a luciferase reporter assay, we identified miR-150 directly targets
, which is ...a key oncogene in ovarian cancer. We, therefore, investigated the role of miR-150 in ovarian cancer cells, and the usefulness of miR-150 as a therapeutic target in chemoresistant ovarian cancer, through examining miR-150 expression by qRT-PCR in ovarian cancer cell lines and tissues, and assessing the gain-of-function effect by WST, colony forming, TUNEL, wound healing and angiogenesis assays. Western blotting was performed to evaluate its downstream targets. The miR-150 expression was significantly downregulated in ovarian cancers. Treatment with pre-miR-150 significantly inhibited cancer cell proliferation, and induced apoptosis in PTX (paclitaxel) -resistant SKpac cells, which was not seen by PTX only treatment. On spheroid forming assay, an additional pre-miR-150 treatment with PTX decreased cancer stem cell activation in PTX-resistant SKpac cells. An experimental upregulation of miR-150 also decreased cancer cell migration and angiogenesis in SKpac cells. The Notch3 downstream proteins(NICD3 and HEY2), and cell cycle-related proteins (cyclinD3, pS6, and NF-kB), and apoptosis-related proteins (BCL-2 and BCL-W) were significantly downregulated by pre-miR-150 transfection. Taken together, miR-150 is related with PTX-resistance in ovarian cancer, and treatment with pre-miR-150 resensitizes cancer cells to PTX. Therefore, it may be a promising treatment strategy in chemoresistant and recurrent ovarian cancer.
The risk of depression has risen in the general population during the COVID-19 epidemic. This study was conducted to explore risk and protective factors associated with depression among the general ...population uninfected by COVID-19.
A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,500 representative South Korean citizens aged 19-65 years through an anonymous online survey. Depression was defined as a Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score of 10 or higher. Other questionnaires included one measuring psycho-behavioural and social changes, and stress, due to COVID-19, a six-item version of the Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ-6), and a three-item version of the UCLA loneliness scale.
Of the 1492 participants not infected by COVID-19, 312 (20.9%) exhibited depression. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that depression was positively associated with COVID-19-related stress and psycho-behavioural variables such as disturbances in eating and sleeping, younger age, smoking, underlying mental illness, and loneliness scale scores. In contrast, exercise three or more times per week and GQ-6 scale scores were inversely associated with depression.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining daily routines including eating, sleeping, and regular exercise and focusing on gratitude may be important for the prevention of depression. In addition, more attention should be paid to vulnerable populations, including young people, those with mental illnesses, and smokers, who might be more susceptible to depression.

Tomato variety Hawaii 7996 is resistant to the soil-borne pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum, whereas the Moneymaker variety is susceptible to the pathogen. To evaluate whether plant-associated ...microorganisms have a role in disease resistance, we analyzed the rhizosphere microbiomes of both varieties in a mesocosm experiment. Microbiome structures differed between the two cultivars. Transplantation of rhizosphere microbiota from resistant plants suppressed disease symptoms in susceptible plants. Comparative analyses of rhizosphere metagenomes from resistant and susceptible plants enabled the identification and assembly of a flavobacterial genome that was far more abundant in the resistant plant rhizosphere microbiome than in that of the susceptible plant. We cultivated this flavobacterium, named TRM1, and found that it could suppress R. solanacearum-disease development in a susceptible plant in pot experiments. Our findings reveal a role for native microbiota in protecting plants from microbial pathogens, and our approach charts a path toward the development of probiotics to ameliorate plant diseases.
Immune checkpoint blockade is promising for treating non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We used multipanel markers to predict the response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) by characterizing ...gene expression signatures or individual genes in patients who showed durable clinical benefit to ICIs. Twenty-one patients with NSCLC treated with single-agent anti-programmed cell death protein (PD)-1 antibody were analyzed and their clinicopathological characteristics and response to ICIs were characterized. Nine (43%) showed a durable clinical benefit (DCB), while the remaining 12 (57%) patients showed non-durable benefit (NDB). The M1 and peripheral T cell signatures showed the best performance for discriminating DCB from NDB (sensitivity, specificity, accuracy = 0.89, 1.0, 0.95, respectively). Progression-free survival (PFS) was significantly longer in patients with high M1 signature or high peripheral T cell signature scores. CD137 and PSMB9 mRNA expression was higher in the DCB group than in the NDB group. Patients with high PSMB9 expression showed longer PFS. M1 signature, peripheral T cell signature and high mRNA expression level of CD137 and PSMB9 showed better predictive performance than known biomarkers, such as PD-L1 immunohistochemistry, tumor mutation burden, or tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes.
Statins, which are widely used to treat hypercholesterolemia, have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. These are thought to be responsible for the potential effects of statins on various ...psychiatric disorders. In this study, we comprehensively review the literature to investigate the effects of statins on various psychiatric disorders including depression, schizophrenia, and dementia. In addition, we review adverse effects and drug interactions of statins to give clinically useful information guiding statin use in the psychiatric field. Statins seem useful in reducing depression, particularly in patients with physical disorders such as cardiovascular disease. In patients with schizophrenia, negative symptoms may be reduced by adjuvant statin therapy. Studies on cohorts at risk for dementia have generally shown protective effects of statins, while those on treatment for dementia show inconsistent results. In conclusion, statins used in combination with conventional psychotropic medications may be effective for various psychiatric disorders including depression, schizophrenia, and dementia. Further study is required to determine optimal doses and duration of statin use for the treatment of psychiatric disorders.
Despite being a promising strategy, current chemotherapy for gastric cancer (GC) is limited due to adverse side effects and poor survival rates. Therefore, new drug-delivery platforms with good ...biocompatibility are needed. Recent studies have shown that nanoparticle-based drug delivery can be safe, eco-friendly, and nontoxic making them attractive candidates. Here, we develop a novel selenium-nanoparticle based drug-delivery agent for cancer treatment from plant extracts and selenium salts.
Selenium cations were reduced to selenium nanoparticles using Kaempferia parviflora (black ginger) root extract and named KP-SeNP. Transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray, dynamic light scattering, and Fourier-transform infrared spectrum were utilized to confirm the physicochemical features of the nanoparticles. The KP-SeNPs showed significant cytotoxicity in human gastric adenocarcinoma cell (AGS cells) but not in normal cells. We determined that the intracellular signaling pathway mechanisms associated with the anticancer effects of KP-SeNPs involve the upregulation of intrinsic apoptotic signaling markers, such as B-cell lymphoma 2, Bcl-associated X protein, and caspase 3 in AGS cells. KP-SeNPs also caused autophagy of AGS by increasing the autophagic flux-marker protein, LC3B-II, whilst inhibiting autophagic cargo protein, p62. Additionally, phosphorylation of PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway markers and downstream targets was decreased in KP-SeNP-treated AGS cells. AGS-cell xenograft model results further validated our in vitro findings, showing that KP-SeNPs are biologically safe and exert anticancer effects via autophagy and apoptosis.
These results show that KP-SeNPs treatment of AGS cells induces apoptosis and autophagic cell death through the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, suppressing GC progression. Thus, our research strongly suggests that KP-SeNPs could act as a novel potential therapeutic agent for GC.

•Performance implications of buyer and seller strategies vary by revenue sources.•Direct traffic buyers generate the most display ad revenue for the platform.•Organic traffic buyers ...yield more search ad revenue than direct traffic buyers.•Sellers’ uses of value-added services generate the most membership fee revenue.•The revenue effect of these strategies increases after upmarket repositioning.
Most online shopping platform firms generate revenue from three sources: pay-per-click search advertising, pay-per-impression display advertising, and membership fees. The strategies that influence these revenue sources typically are studied individually, rather than in a holistic fashion. In response, this study uses time-series data with 18 million buyers and sellers from 2010 to 2011 and undertakes a quasi-experiment to analyze how the distinct effects of buyer- and seller-side strategies on revenues (1) vary across all three revenue sources and (2) depend differentially on a platform’s upmarket repositioning strategy. The results show that buyers that purchase through direct traffic (e.g., typing in the site address) yield more display advertising and membership fee revenues than those gained through organic traffic (e.g., landing from a search engine). Engagement strategies that appeal to established sellers (i.e., value-added services) yield more search advertising and membership revenue than those that appeal to new sellers (i.e., social forums). An upmarket repositioning strategy (i.e., eliminating low quality sellers) enhances the revenue effects of buyer traffic generation and seller engagement strategies. Post hoc analyses suggest that a 1% increase in direct traffic generates an additional $151,506 in display advertising revenue after (vs. before) the repositioning.
