Dynamics of large complex systems, such as relaxation towards equilibrium in classical statistical mechanics, often obeys a master equation that captures essential information from the complexities. ...Here, we find that thermalization of an isolated many-body quantum state can be described by a master equation. We observe sudden quench dynamics of quantum Ising-like models implemented in our quantum simulator, defect-free single-atom tweezers in conjunction with Rydberg-atom interaction. Saturation of their local observables, a thermalization signature, obeys a master equation experimentally constructed by monitoring the occupation probabilities of prequench states and imposing the principle of the detailed balance. Our experiment agrees with theories and demonstrates the detailed balance in a thermalization dynamics that does not require coupling to baths or postulated randomness.
Small-angle x-ray scattering experiments conducted with compositionally asymmetric low molar mass poly(isoprene)-b-poly(lactide) diblock copolymers reveal an extraordinary thermal history dependence. ...The development of distinct periodic crystalline or aperiodic quasicrystalline states depends on how specimens are cooled from the disordered state to temperatures below the order-disorder transition temperature. Whereas direct cooling leads to the formation of documented morphologies, rapidly quenched samples that are then heated from low temperature form the hexagonal C14 and cubic C15 Laves phases commonly found in metal alloys. Self-consistent mean-field theory calculations show that these, and other associated Frank-Kasper phases, have nearly degenerate free energies, suggesting that processing history drives the material into long-lived metastable states defined by self-assembled particles with discrete populations of volumes and polyhedral shapes.
Cooling disordered compositionally asymmetric diblock copolymers leads to the formation of nearly spherical particles, each containing hundreds of molecules, which crystallize upon cooling below the ...order–disorder transition temperature (T
ODT). Self-consistent field theory (SCFT) reveals that dispersity in the block degrees of polymerization stabilizes various Frank–Kasper phases, including the C14 and C15 Laves phases, which have been accessed experimentally in low-molar-mass poly(isoprene)-b-poly(lactide) (PI-PLA) diblock copolymers using thermal processing strategies. Heating and cooling a specimen containing 15% PLA above and below the T
ODT from the body-centered cubic (BCC) or C14 states regenerates the same crystalline order established at lower temperatures. This memory effect is also demonstrated with a specimen containing 20% PLA, which recrystallizes to either C15 or hexagonally ordered cylinders (HEXC) upon heating and cooling. The process-path–dependent formation of crystalline order shapes the number of particles per unit volume, n/V, which is retained in the highly structured disordered liquid as revealed by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments. We hypothesize that symmetry breaking during crystallization is governed by the particle number density imprinted in the liquid during ordering at lower temperature, and this metastable liquid is kinetically constrained from equilibrating due to prohibitively large free energy barriers for micelle fusion and fission. Ordering at fixed n/V is enabled by facile chain exchange, which redistributes mass as required to meet the multiple particle sizes and packing associated with specific low-symmetry Frank–Kasper phases. This discovery exposes universal concepts related to order and disorder in self-assembled soft materials.

•This is the first report to investigate the relative distribution and contamination patterns of seven groups of POPs simultaneously.•SCCPs were predominant in sediment and crucian ...carp, whereas PFASs were dominant in water.•All media showed similar relationships in the distributions of four groups of POPs.•Sexually dimorphic growth-dependent accumulation of POPs was observed in crucian carp, except for PCNs and SCCPs.
In this study, a comprehensive investigation was performed to understand the overall occurrence, relative distribution, and bioaccumulation of seven different groups of POPs, comprising 27 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 76 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 23 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), three hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs), and 13 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) as legacy POPs, and 41 polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) and 24 short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) as emerging POPs, by monitoring crucian carp, sediment, and river water in the freshwater system. Among the targeted POPs, SCCPs were predominant in sediment and crucian carp (more than 95%), while a dominance of PFASs was observed in river water (92%). Principal component analysis revealed four different groups/patterns of POPs in all media: one for PBDEs, PCBs, and OCPs, another for HBCDs and PFASs, and the two others for PCNs and SCCPs. Also, sexually dimorphic growth-dependent accumulation of legacy POPs was observed in crucian carp such that POPs concentration increased with increasing fish size and males recorded significantly higher levels of POPs compared to females.
Since the conventional fluorine-based electro-active polymers release toxic residues into the environment during their syntheses and decomposition processes, eco-friendly piezoelectric polymers are ...urgently demanded in the field of energy-related soft materials. Here, we derive a high-performance biodegradable chitin polymer from squid pen material and demonstrate its utility as a flexible piezoelectric material. The readily controlled ferroelectric chitin film confers excellent piezoelectricity under external mechanical pressure, resulting in comparable performance with that of conventional fluorine-based piezoelectric polymers. In particular, the sufficient piezoelectric behavior in chitin film allows us to not only realize a high-fidelity paper-type speaker and microphone that operates over a wide frequency range without significantly deteriorating the input and output sounds but also demonstrate transparent speaker consisting of AgNWs electrodes onto freestanding chitin film which also enables to resemble the original sound. Finally, the biodegradable chitin polymer can be successfully dissolved by chitinase enzyme within eight days without any toxic residues remained.
We present a novel biodegradable piezoelectric material from chitin material, the second-most abundant polysaccharide biopolymer. The decent polarization arising from the chitin molecules not only facilitates the piezoelectric response upon the external pressure but also generates the harmonic frequencies of the input music source. Moreover, the environmentally friendly chitin film can be completely dissolved in a water-based solution without generating toxic products. Display omitted

The occurrence and distribution of cyclic and linear siloxanes were investigated in South Korean river water and sediment, with a special focus on crucian carp tissues, to evaluate the residual ...status and potential bioaccumulation of siloxanes. The total siloxanes median concentrations observed in this study were 1495 ng/L in river water, 39.2 ng/g-dry weight dw in sediment, and 41.7 ng/g-wet weight ww in crucian carp muscle. Cyclic siloxanes (D3–D6) were predominant in all matrices, and D5 (mean: > 81%) was more abundant in biota tissues than in river water (30%) and sediment (26%) samples. Specifically, positive correlations between D5 concentrations and crucian carp sizes (p < 0.01, Spearman) as well as the relatively high estimated biota-sediment accumulation factor value of D5 (D5: 2.31), suggest the high bioaccumulative property of D5 in biota. However, no bioaccumulation potentials were observed for D3, D4, D6, and L3–L17 in this field-scale study. The distributions of major linear siloxanes (L7–L14) in crucian carp gills (17%) and gonads (21%) were higher than in other tissues (brain, 9.6%; liver, 2.6%; muscle, 1.5%). Moreover, relatively high tissue/plasma ratios were observed for linear siloxanes (L7–L10: 1.79–2.12) compared to cyclic siloxanes (D4–D6: 0.829–1.18) (p < 0.01, Mann Whitney U test), which indicated the higher transportability of linear siloxanes to fish tissues than cyclic siloxanes.

We report the phase behavior of a series of poly(styrene)-b-poly(isoprene)-b-poly(styrene)′-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (SIS′O) tetrablock terpolymers. This study was motivated by self-consistent ...field theory (SCFT) calculations that anticipate a rich array of sphere-forming morphologies with variations in the molecular symmetry parameter τ = N S/(N S + N S′), where N is the block degree of polymerization and the volume fraction of O is less than about 0.22. Eight SIS′O samples, with τ ranging from 0.21 to 0.73, were synthesized and investigated using small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy, yielding evidence of nine different spherical phases: hexagonal, FCC, HCP, BCC, rhombohedral (tentative), liquid-like packing, dodecagonal quasicrystal, and Frank–Kasper σ and A15 phases. At temperatures close to the order–disorder transition, these tetrablocks behave as pseudo-SIS′-O diblocks and form equilibrium morphologies mediated by facile chain exchange between micelles. Transition from equilibrium to nonequilibrium behavior occurs at a temperature (T erg) several tens of degrees below the order–disorder transition temperature, speculated to be coincident with the loss of ergodicity, as chain exchange is arrested due to increased segregation strength between the core (O) and corona (SIS′) blocks. Nonequilibrium ordered structures form when T < T erg; these are interpreted using SCFT calculations to elucidate the free energy landscape driving ordering in the S and I block matrix. These experiments demonstrate a profound dependence on phase stability with variations in τ and temperature, providing insights into the formation of ordered phase symmetry in this class of asymmetric multiblock polymers.
Firms’ digital environment changes and industrial competitions have evolved quickly since the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the COVID-19 pandemic. Many companies are propelling company-wide ...digital transformation strategies based on artificial intelligence (AI) technology for the digital innovation of organizations and businesses. This study aims to define the factors affecting digital transformation strategies and present a decision-making model required for digital transformation strategies based on the definition. It also reviews previous AI technology and digital transformation strategies and draws influence factors. The research model drew four evaluation areas, such as subject, environment, resource, and mechanism, and 16 evaluation factors through the SERM model. After the factors were reviewed through the Delphi methods, a questionnaire survey was conducted targeting experts with over 10 years of work experience in the digital strategy field. The study results were produced by comparing the data’s importance using an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) on each group. According to the analysis, the subject was the most critical factor, and the CEO (top management) was more vital than the core talent or technical development organization. The importance was shown in the order of resource, mechanism and environment, following subject. It was ascertained that there were differences of importance in industrial competition and market digitalization in the demander and provider groups.
The assessment of the incubation period, which is the period between the infection and the illness onset, is essential to identify the sufficient isolation period for infectious diseases. In South ...Korea, a few cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were identified after the 14-day self-quarantine program, and the length of this quarantine has raised controversial issues for the Korean public health professionals.
We estimated the COVID-19 incubation period using the log-normal distribution from publicly available data. The data were obtained from the press release of the Busan city department of public health and news reports.
We collected and analysed information for 47 patients with a median age of 30. We estimated that the median incubation period was three days (95% Confidence Interval, 0.6–8.2). We also did not find any significant difference in the incubation period between males and females.
Our findings indicate that a 14-day self-quarantine program should be sufficient to prevent spreading in the infection of suspected individuals with COVID-19 in the community.
The characters in Leesong Hee-il’s films dream of and desire a queer utopia and a completely new world. Awakened to their own singularity through gay shame, they are compelled to reconsider the norms ...and expectations of the established gay community, which they see as trying to assimilate them into the supra-communal state. Through this gay shame, they come to stand as singular beings in the face of an absurd society. They then rise in revolt against the identity that the gay community imposes on them, while expressing their dis-satisfaction with restricted freedoms provided by the state. Ultimately, they end up as queer anarchists in pursuit of social freedom through the ethics of personal relationships. Their gestures to escape regulations and control push them forward with affective resistance in their relations with others, which is the only future left for them after all else is lost. Finding themselves alone and at an impasse, they encounter their own utopian bodies. In a desperate queer dance, they lose themselves and transform their bodies to establish a utopia of the here and now.
