Magnetic skyrmions are swirling magnetic textures with novel characteristics suitable for future spintronic and topological applications. Recent studies confirmed the room-temperature stabilization ...of skyrmions in ultrathin ferromagnets. However, such ferromagnetic skyrmions show an undesirable topological effect, the skyrmion Hall effect, which leads to their current-driven motion towards device edges, where skyrmions could easily be annihilated by topographic defects. Recent theoretical studies have predicted enhanced current-driven behavior for antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled skyrmions. Here we present the stabilization of these skyrmions and their current-driven dynamics in ferrimagnetic GdFeCo films. By utilizing element-specific X-ray imaging, we find that the skyrmions in the Gd and FeCo sublayers are antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled. We further confirm that ferrimagnetic skyrmions can move at a velocity of ~50 m s
with reduced skyrmion Hall angle, |θ
| ~ 20°. Our findings open the door to ferrimagnetic and antiferromagnetic skyrmionics while providing key experimental evidences of recent theoretical studies.
Smart card data are widely used in generating the origin and destination (O–D) matrix for public transit, which contains important information for transportation planning and operation. However, the ...generation of the O–D matrix is limited by the smart card data information that includes the boarding (origin) information without the alighting (destination) information. To solve this problem, trip chain methods have been proposed, thereby greatly contributing in estimating the destination using the smart card data. Nevertheless, unlinked trips, that is, trips with unknown destinations, are a persisting issue. The purpose of this study is to develop a method for estimating the destination of unlinked trips, in which trip chain methods cannot be applied, using temporal travel patterns and historical boarding records of the passengers based on long-term smart card data. The passengers were clustered by k-means clustering, and the time-of-day travel patterns were estimated for each cluster using a Gaussian mixture model. The travel patterns were formulated to estimate the destination of the passengers from the smart card data. The proposed method was verified using the 2018 smart card data collected in Sejong City, South Korea. The existing trip chain method matched the destinations of 60.0% of the total trips, whereas the proposed method improved the matching to 74.9% by additionally matching the destinations of 37.2% of the unlinked trips.

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a van der Waals semiconductor with a wide bandgap of ~ 5.96 eV. Despite the indirect bandgap characteristics of hBN, charge carriers excited by high energy electrons ...or photons efficiently emit luminescence at deep-ultraviolet (DUV) frequencies via strong electron-phonon interaction, suggesting potential DUV light emitting device applications. However, electroluminescence from hBN has not been demonstrated at DUV frequencies so far. In this study, we report DUV electroluminescence and photocurrent generation in graphene/hBN/graphene heterostructures at room temperature. Tunneling carrier injection from graphene electrodes into the band edges of hBN enables prominent electroluminescence at DUV frequencies. On the other hand, under DUV laser illumination and external bias voltage, graphene electrodes efficiently collect photo-excited carriers in hBN, which generates high photocurrent. Laser excitation micro-spectroscopy shows that the radiative recombination and photocarrier excitation processes in the heterostructures mainly originate from the pristine structure and the stacking faults in hBN. Our work provides a pathway toward efficient DUV light emitting and detection devices based on hBN.
Polymeric nanoparticle-based carriers are promising agents for the targeted delivery of therapeutics to the intracellular site of action. To optimize the efficacy in delivery, often the tuning of ...physicochemical properties (i.e., particle size, shape, surface charge, lipophilicity, etc.) is necessary, in a manner specific to each type of nanoparticle. Recent studies showed an efficient tumor targeting by hydrophobically modified glycol chitosan (HGC) nanoparticles through the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. As a continued effort, here the investigations on the cellular uptake mechanism and the intracellular fate of the HGC nanoparticles are reported. The HGC nanoparticle, prepared by a partial derivatization of the free amino groups of glycol chitosan (GC) with 5β-cholanic acid, had a globular shape with the average diameter of 359 nm and the zeta potential of ca. 22 mV. Interestingly, these nanoparticles showed an enhanced distribution in the whole cells, compared to the parent hydrophilic GC polymers. In vitro experiments with endocytic inhibitors suggested that several distinct uptake pathways (e.g., clathrin-mediated endocytosis, caveolae-mediated endocytosis, and macropinocytosis) are involved in the internalization of HGC. Some HGC nanoparticles were found entrapped in the lysosomes upon entry, as determined by TEM and colocalization studies. Given such favorable properties including low toxicity, biocompatibility, and fast uptake by several nondestructive endocytic pathways, our HGC nanoparticles may serve as a versatile carrier for the intracellular delivery of therapeutic agents.
The cellular uptake profile of HGC was time-and dose-dependent. Pre-treatment of HeLa cells with several endocytic inhibitors (e.g., chlorpromazine, filipin III, and amiloride) indicated that more than one mechanism is involved simultaneously in the HGC nanoparticles' uptake.

Atrial fibrosis can present as an arrhythmogenic substrate that is correlated with higher recurrence after catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation. Galectin-3, a beta-galactoside-binding lectin, is ...highly expressed and secreted from macrophages and is important in inflammation and fibrosis. We assessed the clinical implications of serum galectin-3 in patients with atrial fibrillation. This was a prospective cohort study of consecutive patients who underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation in a tertiary referral center from February 2017 to September 2017. Intracardiac blood sampling, echocardiographic measurements, magnetic resonance imaging with late gadolinium enhancement, electrophysiologic testing, and endocardial voltage mapping were consistently implemented in 75 patients before the ablation. Serum galectin-3 level was higher in patients with diabetes mellitus and was correlated with values that indicated the left atrial size. During a median 14 months of follow-up, atrial tachyarrhythmia recurred in 27% of patients. In multivariable Cox regression analysis, non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (hazard ratio 6.8; 95% confidence interval 1.6-28.9) and higher galectin-3 levels (hazard ratio 1.3; 95% confidence interval 1.0-1.7) were associated with increased risk of recurrence. Serum galectin-3 may be a prognostic biomarker for risk stratification in patients with atrial fibrillation planned catheter ablation.
This study evaluated quantitative changes in microvascular parameters after panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) in diabetic retinopathy (DR), using swept-source OCT Angiography (SS-OCTA). A total of 27 ...treatment-naïve eyes were subjected to PRP and followed-up for > 12 months after the procedure. Foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, macular perfusion density (PD), and vessel length density (VLD) were calculated on a 3 × 3 mm en face OCTA image and nonperfusion area (NPA) was obtained on a 12 × 12 mm en face OCTA image. One month after PRP, PD and VLD of superficial and deep capillary plexus decreased and subsequently, increased progressively across the next 12 months, with statistically significant differences (P = 0.015 and 0.02). Continuous decreasing trends in total NPA values was observed across 12 months after PRP (P = 0.125). A difference in PD of the superficial capillary plexus between baseline and 6 months post PRP, was significantly associated with the progression of DR, 12 months after PRP (OR 0.528; P = 0.025). We found significant longitudinal retinal microvascular changes after PRP in DR. Overall macular perfusion status was impaired and progressively recovered across the next 12 months, compared to the baseline. Additionally, the early treatment responses in PD can predict the long-term outcomes of PDR after PRP.
The incidence of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in Asians is lower than that seen in Western populations, but there are few available data on the incidence and associated cardiac etiology of SCA in ...Asians. From 2002 to 2013, patients with SCA were analyzed using a cohort from the South Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) coded database. Sudden unexplained death syndrome (SUDS) was defined as cryptogenic arrest, excluding that of non-cardiac origin, coronary artery disease (CAD), cardiomyopathy (CM), and valvular heart disease. During the 12-year study period, 5,973 patients (0.53%) from the total cohort of 1,125,691 had a cardiac arrest code. The overall incidence of arrest was 48.7 per 100,000 person-years (95% CI 16.6-18.0). The incidence of primary SCA excluding those of non-cardiac origin was 16.1 per 100,000 person-years (95% CI 15.4-16.8). It was higher in males than in females (18.1 vs. 14.1 per 100,000 person-years). CAD was the most common cause of SCA (59.4%), and followed by CM (13.9%). SUDS accounted for 14.7% of SCA events. The risk of SCA had increased gradually from over 25 years old. Heart failure, atrial fibrillation and hypertension are major factors associated with SCA incidence. Our findings outline epidemiologic data for SCA and the proportion of associated cardiac etiology leads SCA in a large population.

Background
Postoperative delirium after liver transplantation is relatively common, especially due to preexisting conditions such as hepatic encephalopathy. Most studies of delirium after liver ...transplantation were based on ICU practices using deep hypnosedation. Therefore, risk factors and consequences of postoperative delirium after liver transplantation were evaluated in the light sedation era.
Methods
A total of 253 liver transplantation patients were evaluated for postoperative delirium. Clinical outcomes including mortality were compared between patients who suffered delirium and those who did not. Risk factors for postoperative delirium were analyzed with subgroup analysis depending on MELD scores and type of liver transplantation.
Results
Post-liver transplant delirium developed in 17% of the patients, 88% of which occurred within the first postoperative day. Alcoholic liver cirrhosis, class C Child–Pugh score, higher MELD scores, higher proportion of deceased donor liver transplantation, and reintubation were more frequent in patients who developed delirium, but there was no difference in mortality. Conclusion
Postoperative delirium after liver transplantation was associated with worse clinical outcomes. MELD scores greater than 15 were predictive of postoperative delirium in both living and deceased donor liver transplantation.
We have achieved heteroepitaxial stacking of a van der Waals (vdW) monolayer metal, 1T’-WTe2, and a semiconductor, 2H-WSe2, in which a distinctively low contact barrier was established across a clean ...epitaxial vdW gap. Our epitaxial 1T’-WTe2 films were identified as a semimetal by low temperature transport and showed the robust breakdown current density of 5.0 × 107 A/cm2. In comparison with a series of planar metal contacts, our epitaxial vdW contact was identified to possess intrinsic Schottky barrier heights below 100 meV for both electron and hole injections, contributing to superior ambipolar field-effect transistor (FET) characteristics, i.e., higher FET mobilities and higher on–off current ratios at smaller threshold gate voltages. We discuss our observations around the critical roles of the epitaxial vdW heterointerfaces, such as incommensurate stacking sequences and absence of extrinsic interfacial defects that are inaccessible by other contact methods.
This study was aimed at investigating the clinical efficacy of probiotics in pneumonia patients. To this end, we enrolled 80 participants diagnosed with pneumonia at Naval Pohang Hospital, Pohang, ...Korea, from May 2016 to January 2017. The participants were randomly assigned to the control and probiotic groups depending on whether they received probiotics. All participants clinically improved but 22.6% of the participants complained of abnormal stool habits after pneumonia treatment. In comparison, fever duration was significantly shorter in the probiotic group, and the group exhibited an improved general condition. The probiotic group also showed better stool characteristics according to the Bristol stool scale (P = 0.009). Notably, the serum hs-CRP levels were significantly lower in the probiotic group at 2 weeks of treatment (P = 0.015), and all participants in the probiotic group achieved their levels within the normal range. Flow cytometry was used to analyze T-helper 17 (Th17) cells and regulatory T cells (Tregs). Tregs were promoted and the Th17 cell/Treg ratio was suppressed after 2 weeks of treatment in the probiotic group (P = 0.007 and 0.037, respectively). This study demonstrated that probiotics improved clinical symptoms and normalized inflammatory biomarker levels in patients with pneumonia. Early infection and inflammation recovery may be due to the immunomodulatory effects of probiotics by facilitating the subset of Tregs and suppressing the Th17 cell/Treg ratio.
